Report: Broncos Shopping Talib

January 28th, 2018

On trade market.

The Bucs, in limbo with the uncertain future of free agent cornerback Brent Grimes, do have a certain corner being dangled in front of their face.

Per long-time Broncos beat guy Mike Klis, typing for KUSA-TV Channel 9 in Denver, the Broncos are waving Aqib Talib at teams as they drive down the road, like a local tax service trying to attract the attention of a potential suitor.

Talib has had six pick sixes during his four seasons in Denver.

Although Talib has two years left on the six-year, $57 million contract he signed with the Broncos in March 2014, Denver is expected to place him on the trading block because of financial considerations.

Klis also noted Talib is the first Broncos defensive back to make four Pro Bowls since John Lynch.

In Joe’s eyes, AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht must be at the table with a serious hand. If Grimes decides to bolt, then the Bucs are looking at two of these three corners starting in 2018: Vernon Hargreaves, Robert McClain (if they can re-sign him) or Ryan Smith.

Potential nightmare!

Given the rank inability over two seasons for this Bucs defensive coaching staff to develop a young corner, combined with Grimes’ cloudy plans, Licht has to be a player for Talib.

Late round pick for him. That’s it!

  2. zwh99 Says:

    I agree with ray rice

  3. DanBucsFan Says:

Prob can get him for 4th 5th round pick or maybe Swaggy lol that would be AWESOME DEAL to get him for Swaggy and a 6th rounder.

  4. Buxfan Says:

I truly doubt the Glazers would allow Talib to come back here.

  5. Waterboy Says:

Give up a draft pick for a guy previously cut by the team, life as a Bucs fan! He’s due to make 12 million this year and 8 million next year, I’d hold out and wait on Denver to cut him. Although most of his guaranteed money is more than likely already paid out so it would be a pretty low risk deal as long as it’s a low round pick (5th or below) that they give up for him.

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

The Bucs need to build from within….YOUNG FA’s and draft picks….the locker room must build and grow from within…not these beat up old formerly in their prime opportunists….wise up folks…

  7. darin Says:

Gota get good players when ya can. Even tho smith will not utilize him properly he will still make plays. Hopefully the broncos will look for someone(s) on the roster rather than a high draft pick. To the commenters already..of course teams dont wana give up high picks. Gota give up more than the other teams bidding tho. Yet if the broncos are doing it mostly for cap relief and feel like his replacement is already on the roster im sure he might not fetch too much. Interesting stuff. Cmon licht make some noise this year. N the swaggy thing must be a joke. Every team knows he will be cut.

  8. DanBucsFan Says:

@darin. Yes was joking. I doubt anyone would trade for swaggy anyway. But I would be all for picking up Talib for couple years his “swag” would be a nice vetran addition maybe youngsters Smith and Hargreaves could learn thing or two playing behing him and Grimes.

  9. Maze Says:

    Trumaine Johnson. Enough said

I truly doubt the Glazers would allow Talib to come back here.

Actually Buxfan the Glazers good friends with Talib actually respect how Talib matured for the most part in his career …..

and this comes from Talib himself said on an interview

It seems beside his cabby punching which its warranted or justified on the action or reaction if he was called the N word that triggered him….

but the rest could be said wielding a gun after he was defending his family From the same wife beating brother in law some of you idiots bring up ray rice for

hahahahahaa…… ladys and gents that’s called speaking just to speak minus thinking

  11. Nate Says:

its not warranted or justified* typo

  12. DoNUTS Says:

I agree late round pick for Talib. Send the Bucs team a message by sending Swaggy in the trade even if the Broncos dont ask for him. Just give him a plane ticket.

Baker could end of being the worst FA signing the in past 10 years but we still have Mike “Ghost” Johnson probably slipping by to be #1 worst. Its neck and neck race for sure.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’d prefer we not get Talib, especially in a trade.

On the topic of the pro bowl, Kwon makes a good play and the announcer says, “Perhaps Alexander is not familiar with Pro Boel adequate…”

this game really, really sucks. No tackling????

  14. martinii Says:

Excuse me, but the Buc’s need to win some games next year or none of this really matters. Talib is younger than Grimes and has continued to play at a High level. The only reason they need to unload him is because money, not his diminished ability. As far as pride, very few of us have much of that left after 10 years. We need Talib to cover these big WR’s we face in the NFC South. So if the wild one hits the market, we need him roaming our defensive backfield causing havoc. Trade for him.

  15. martinii Says:

Typed 2 post, neither is showing-up, What’s the problem?

  16. aussieBucfan Says:

Because that worked out so well with TJ Ward, John Elway thinking hmm maybe I can get something out of this.

Oh and because Bennett’s name follws hand in hand with these stories why don’t the Bucs enquire about taking Richard Sherman of Seattle’s hand’s?

An unstable voice in a locker room coming off an Achilles injury that’s going to cost 13.2m this year against the cap hmm let’s go for somebody under 30 hey..

  17. 2Anglican1609 Says:

There is some truth to this, cab drivers are quitting their jobs as we speak in Tampa

  18. zwh99 Says:

Actually nate, i was agreeing with the first commenter on this post haha

  19. mike10 Says:

Good move bringing him back. Seems like he’s grown up since his last stint here and we need athletes at corner!

  20. Rod Munch Says:

If he can be hard for a late pick then go for it, the last thing the Bucs need is to get into another FA situation where they will of course lose out since who willingly wants to come to the Bucs when they know the GM and HC is going to get fired next year? He has 2 years left on his contract which is perfect since Winston won’t get paid for 2 more years, and by that time you’d want to start dumping old players and their salaries.

Will the Bucs make the move? Of course not, they’ll instead draft a FB with the pick the Broncos would want and then he’ll get cut in the first roster cut and instead Ryan Smith will be starting and give up over 600 passing yards a quarter.

  21. Not there yet Says:

If they don’t address the d line it won’t matter if undrafted rookies are out there because everyone will get carved up no matter who is back there. 57 mil? Definitely every team is going to call bluff and wait for him to get cut

  22. zwh99 Says:

Broncos are probably gonna cut him tho

  23. Rod Munch Says:

    Not – You do both.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Kwon is all over the place in Pro-Bowl, like everytime you look up and the NFC is on defense, you see his Bucs helmet flying all over the place. Yeah I know it doesn’t mean anything, but still it’s a nice showing from Kwon.

  25. 1Gr8Buc Says:

Monken promoted to full time offensive coordinator.

  26. Pickgrin Says:

Trade??? LOL Nobody wants to pay $12M for Talib next year – much less give up something for the “privilege” of over paying him.

Denver will cut him and his market value will top out at $8-9M.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Do you people think if Talib gets cut he winds up in Tampa? Talk about some low IQ dolts. Why would Talib (or anyone with a name) come to a place where the GM and HC are going to get fired? If the Bucs want him, then they need to make a trade, otherwise they will not get him – not with a completely unstable coaching/GM situation. Also dopes if you’re going to constantly talk about how Jacksonville built their defense, you might want to actually read up on it so you know what you’re talking about. The only way Jacksonville got people to go there was to vastly overpaid them. Go look at the deals they were handing out, they were way above market value because no one wanted to play there – or live there, it’s Jacksonville, the armpit of southeast.

  28. DanBucsFan Says:

Either way they should add him to the roster. He is not washed up and actually quoted as saying he would like to return to Tampa if opportunity presented itself. I doubt many players who can help would want to come to bucs so we may not have luxury of being so picky

  29. StPeteBucsFan Says:

He’s kept his nose clean since he left the Bucs. He seems to have matured in N.E. I say get him but also re-sign Grimes. If we had both Grimes and Talib and VHG can recover even his rookie form he’ll be fine as our 3rd DB and we have some young guys to back them up.

IF we develop a pass rush that backfield would be formidable. NO pass rush and it won’t really matter who we sign for DB.

  30. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

I was JUST thinking that the solution to all of the Bucs problems is to TRADE valuable assets for a 32 year old regressing CB still making elite salary!

Fix the trenches, fix the Bucs!!

  31. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Why are my comments always under moderation for sometimes hours? Because I want the Bucs to improve their overall line play?

Fix the trenches, fix the Bucs!!

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Tony – There is probably a boring filter that you keep triggering.

  33. Ndog Says:

Why does everyone act like it has to be Talib or Grimes? Why not both?

  34. Ndog Says:

Wow GMC and his losing culture even infected NFC probowl defense! Did you see how that AFC dine closed out the game? Notice our half a** DT did nothing on that final drive. It looked very similar to many endings to our games.

  35. MarineBucsFan Says:

Offer a 6th rounder, all the while knowing you would do it for a 5th. Bring Talib home then resign Grimes as well as spend a mid-late on anotherthen we set at CB for 2018 season. This also allows us to go all in on Defensive End in Free Agency. Do it!!!

    #FixTheTrenches

  36. Ptwalk Says:

@Ndog neither did the other 10 players. So why just point out McCoy.

  37. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Exactly Ndog….get them both!

  38. Ndog Says:

Ptwalk cause unlike the rest of those guys it looked like every defense McCoy had been the capitan on.

  39. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Is having Grimes and Talib possible?

  40. Bobby M. Says:

This defense and team needs guys like Talib and Bennett…..Loud, yet proven vets that will bring accountability to both sides of the ball. I assure you they won’t tolerate playing solid defense only to see the offense give points away with turnovers and field position….And Talib is not listening to all that rah rah pregame nonsense from a guy who loses 9 straight starts.

The Bucs want to get over the hump, stop coddling Winston and get players that will tell him to put up or shut up.

  41. firethecannons Says:

Talib probably pan out like TJ Ward

    @ Altered

agree that Bucs have to build from within, they should spend more time evaluating the coaches, has to be somebody out there that can coach our defensive backs up VH3, Ryan Smith, Javien Elliot–these dudes need lots of instruction/play time–their offseason should be at a cornerbacks camp and if that don’t exist perhaps Bucs could arrange it without being”involved” money saved on not buying Talib should be spent on extra coaching for our sorry dudes.

  42. Ptwalk Says:

@Ndog I feelya but none of the rest of them are playing next Sunday either.

  43. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

He wore out his welcome here a long time ago. Will never happen nor should it. He is so overrated and not even the best corner in Denver. We can do better than this

  44. Dex Says:

Keep blaming the coaches guys…we’re waiting for a 35 yr old corner to decide will he play for us or not and a 30 yr DT(93) to live up to his contract!I have to give it up tp Jason Licht for having these fans and JoE INTO BELEIVING IN HIM!!!WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. BuccaneEric75 Says:

No! Talib is only good if he’s has a good pass rush. His skills are on the downswing and can’t cover for more then 3 seconds. My best friend is a Broncos fan. Pass!

  46. JimmyJack Says:

Tough to react without knowing the trade price. But I think fans will and should go mad if he’s traded for a low end draft pick

  47. Kellan Says:

Trade a 5th for him and resign grimes on a 1year deal it’s not like we are struggling for cap space

  48. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe what are the chances we pick up Talib AND resign Grimes?

  49. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

His tackles came up drastically short from his career average last year. Talib not only does not play special teams, he appears to be avoiding contact. This is very similar to the same problems we are having with Hargreaves. I don’t know. Maybe offer a swap with the 6th round pick and give Talib a one year prove-it contract.

  50. OneBucPerson Says:

I might be in the minority here but I’d rather not have him back, his fist fights with Michael Crabtree on the field show he still has maturity issues, plus I believe he’s made to look better than he is because Denver has a lot of other talented players on their defense as well as a good pass rush, both of which we are currently lacking.

  51. godzilla13 Says:

Would there be enough cap space for Grimes and Talib? There should be based on overthecap.com showing $62M in cap space. I would jump on making Talib a Buc then draft Safety Darwin James in the first round to form a secondary of James, Evans, Talib, Grimes and Hargreaves. Formidable. The Bucs just may be able to find a very good DE in round two.

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

When did “six pick sixes during his four seasons” become acceptable? Are we that hard up?
