Peyton Barber: Not A Coaching Problem

January 19th, 2018

The Buccaneers’ coaching staff is fresh off season-ending internal evaluations that saved jobs — every last one of them.

And they passed another test, too.

That would be the eyeball test from second-year running back Peyton Barber, the team’s best ball carrier.

Barber joined WDAE-AM 620 this week and was peppered with various questions about the Bucs by host Tom Krasniqi.

Of course, one question was about the coaching staff appearing to be on thin ice for their performance. Barber was quick to defend the Dirk Koetter regime and boldly suggested everything wrong with the Bucs had to do with players not getting it done on the field.

“Everybody loves Coach Koetter,” Barber said. “I love him, too. I feel like he’s a great coach.

“I feel like this past season, it wasn’t really so much coaching or anything. I definitely feel like it was on us, the players.” Barber added that game plans were good and that execution on the field “didn’t really happen.”

So, if Barber is correct, then why didn’t players get it done. Bad luck? Bad chemistry? Bad effort? Bad communication? Better opponents? Poor confidence?

It’ll be on this Bucs coaching staff to figure it out. And that is scaring a lot of Bucs fans.

continuity is good…so, not so upset here with keeping the staff…better than starting all over again

Everyone knows that sheep spook easily!!!!!!! And add to the fact no coaching is running the Tampa2 here or has a connection to the past and the sheep are scared and running around angry!!!!!!! A good draft and just a FA or two and this team will be there with any team!!!!!! The O-line was much better when JR sweez was replaced!!!!!

Fix the “real” problem, the trenches!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

The immediate future for the Buccaneers is likely a lot brighter than most seem to think.

I get it – 5-11 felt like an unexpected kick to the nutsack for pretty much everybody who cares about this team.

But I think with the talent we have and the addition of just 3 or 4 key acquisitions – the Buccaneers are poised to shock a bunch of people in 2018 – in a good way! – especially since nobody will be expecting much from the team this year.

    It’s a Buc problem

It has been a problem for 42 years

  5. Jason Says:

I’m taking what these players are saying with a grain of salt. Anybody with a pair of eyes knows bad coaching was to blame for this season.

  6. Tackleblockwin Says:

The problem(s) are different depending on what unit we are discussing. And I truly believe many of the problems can be fixed in one offseason.

Good way to keep your job Peyton pump up your current boss’. What a joke. Of course he’s gonna say that. How is playoff teams making asst coach changes to get better, yet a joke of a head coach in Klueless Koetter thinks him and his guys aren’t to blame at all? lololol

  8. ben Says:

Joe.. take a pole..How many season tkt holders who continue to pay for their seats are ok with no coaching changes and same gm?

What did we expect him to say – “Koetter sucks balls”? C’mon man.

“Joe.. take a pole..How many season tkt holders who continue to pay for their seats are ok with no coaching changes and same gm?”

    ——-

I’m a season ticket holder, so I’ll give my opinion. I was not in favor of replacing Koetter or Mike Smith. That being said, someone had to go. Whether it be Hayes, Hoke, and/or the special teams coordinator – something had to change for nothing else but to have a different voice. You can’t do the exact same thing and expect different results. I know we had injuries and major talent deficiencies in certain areas (OL, DL and CB), but we still should have been better than 5-11. I’m loyal to a fault so I’m always going to renew my tickets, but I totally understand how others will not.

“Joe.. take a pole..How many season tkt holders who continue to pay for their seats are ok with no coaching changes and same gm?”

Likely ran across almost as many season ticket holders claiming they would drop their tickets if Koetter was run. Yes, really.

Why dont you listen to your beloved coaching staff? Dirk says they have a good Oline. They have the 3rd highest paid Dline in the league, as far as percentage of cap spent. Your “trenches” still suck. Thats a coaching issue. Weve seen your beloved mike smith wont blitz linebackers and safeties at all costs. So yeah no doubt licht has got to sign DEs and draft them. So yeah this team will have to have the highest paid Dline in the league for them to “fix” it. Which of course will hamper other areas. We could have an average paid line that the coaches put in postion to succeed like other teams, but not with mike smith around. You just dont make sense realist. Who are you talking to when u say fix the trenches? You defend the coaching staff but say the trenches are terrible. Not like theres a bunch of no name low paid guys in your “trenches”. Fix the “coaching”. And yeah of course players are gona defend their coaches. If not they wont be around.

  13. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

I really expected Barber to come out and say Koetter & co. sucks. It’s not like Barber was a on the roster bubble this time last year. For a guy that might be the only tailback on the roster carrying over from last season, you’d totally expect him to say his coaches are sh!t and culprits of the disaster last season.

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Barber is in a great position with this team. We are DESPERATE for an RB and he’s the only with who displayed genuine potential.

IE…He’s not going anywhere next season and he absolutely doesn’t need to suck up to the coach…It’s Dirk Koetter not Dirk Trump.

Was he going to throw Koetter and crew under the bus…of course not I get the fundamental conflict of interest…but he could have easily dismissed the question with a quick…this is all on the players not the coaches and then gone on to concentrate on the team without mentioning the coaches. He did NOT do that!!!

    Instead he said…”

Peyton Barber: Not A Coaching Problem

And they passed another test, too.

That would be the eyeball test from second-year running back Peyton Barber, the team’s best ball carrier.

“Everybody loves Coach Koetter,” Barber said. “I love him, too. I feel like he’s a great coach.”

He didn’t have to drop “love” bombs. He could have simply stuck with the second line about the players.

I realize in today’s America it’s hard to believe anybody anymore…but at least we can look at the motivation behind the take and see if it sounds honest.

I have no reason to believe that Barber said this to improve is chances next year. Barber has it figured out….work his butt off in the off season to continue to improve his blocking and pass catching. That will do far more for him than any sucking up to any coaches….IMHO Barber totally gets this.

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Wow apologies for the cut and paste disaster. Don’t know how it happened as I’m very sure I only highlighted Barber’s remarks.

  23. JonBuc Says:

So a guy on the roster bubble…who undoubtedly should have gotten more carries…throws a bouquet to his coach when he desperately needs money to help support his Mom ( making him good people in my book )….how weird/shocking! In that case, extend Koetter & Co. a decade to stay competitive with Gruden’s deal!

  24. bculaw Says:

Problem is that a BIG part of coaching is putting the players in a position to execute and making successful adjustments when they can’t. The reality is that this team has talent, but it has no identity (and therefore no consistency) and it has no sense of urgency (and therefore no real aggressiveness).

I’ve heard Koetter say a number of times that he believes in maintaining an even-keeled demeanor on the sidelines. That’s fine, and oftentimes even preferable from the man in charge, but a team gets its pulse from the coaches and leaders. The HC can be even-keeled, but you better have someone plugged into the culture that can turn your defenders into ruthless hunters and your offensive players into cold blooded assassins.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    @realist

I bet lovie would’ve continued to improve his record….unlike dirk….#REGRESSION!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    LAKELAND

I just hope we can win a game…..GO BUCS!!!!

  27. The Buc Realist Says:

    @813bucboi

Your right, His LOSS record!!!!!!!!! at the end of 2015 you could see the players quit on lovie!!!!!!

While 2017 did not meet the high expectations, and was a considered a failure due to the success they had in 2016 ( success that would never happen under loser lovie)!!!!!!

Just like the owners, the “real” fans want to see another year of this regime with no distractions!!!!! They get another year to prove themselves as they deserve too!!!!!! if they don’t, then we will be talking GM’s and coaching staff’s by the end on next year!!!!! until then, the “real” fans are behind this coaching staff and team!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!

  28. Almighty Buc Says:

No pass rush and Jameis , Trent Dilfering wide open deep balls. End of story

  29. Not there yet Says:

Ok they brought back the entire coaching staff and the gm threw a couple players under the bus which means they think it’s the players even though the gm is picking them lol guess this is what they needed to see how to upgrade, nothing says upgraded like this awful season did

  30. BigHogHaynes Says:

The one real fan is a …! LOVIE didn’t get it done after two years and neither did Coach K! I just can’t see a difference! Then again we all know and see the difference!! TAKE A KNEE….KEEP ANERICA FREE…BURN MAR-A-LARGO BURN!!!

    ______________________________________

There were plenty of coaching issues, but st the same time: coaches don’t make a QB fumble the ball into the opponents hands, or throw 3 interceptions in a game. Coaches don’t make Barber fumble the ball at the goal line. Coaches don’t make OJ Howard fumble either. Coaches don’t make Justin Evans and Brent Grimes fall down in coverage. (Though you could argue the overall softness of the team was from a soft-a$$ training canal)

Plenty of blame to go around IMO

  32. unbelievable Says:

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Well of course Barber is going to defend Dirk – he literally wouldn’t start for any other team in the league and short of the Bucs making a big play for Bell or drafting someone really high Barber is going to go into 2018 as the Bucs lead back.

  34. BuccaneEric75 Says:

The Realist and some of you guys are so funny. Haven’t you guys been reading JBF for the last week or so? It’s not about keeping Koetter or Smith or worrying that no one is running your Tampa2. It’s the fact that Koetter/Licht didn’t make any staff changes. You can’t tell me that none of our position coaches can’t be upgraded. I usually disagree with BigHog because he thinks any negative post about anyone Black, no matter how deserved, is veiled racism. I’m starting to feel that way about you, Realist. Lovie went from 2-14 to 6-10 and you wanted his head. Koetter went from 9-7 to 5-11 and you’re happy he and his entire staff is back. I agree that at least Dirk had a winning record, but if you’re saying that the coaches aren’t the problem than you MUST place the blame on Licht! You should be posting with the same vigor against Licht that you had against Lovie. Be consistent. If the coaches aren’t the problem than Licht is. It’s either coaching or the players, and the players are Lichts problem.

  35. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Unbelievable, coaches CAN teach you to hold onto the football better. Worked for Tiki Barber. If it’s not the coaches fault, it’s Lichts fault for acquiring turnover prone players.

  36. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Gobucyourself, you say 90% is execution, well, 100% of executing a play correctly comes down to coaching. Football people know this. You, not so much.

  37. James Walker Says:

    Go Bucs!

  38. BigMacAttack Says:

Bucs coaching sux and that’s being nice. Koetter needs to let someone else call plays because when they get in the red zone his brain turns to mush. Please trade GMC while he has value. He’s a lazy fat goof ball that brings the team down. Let’s see his get off get off the team. He’d look great in a Browns’ uniform.

  39. Duke Says:

    Bighoghays,

I don’t believe you are aware that Donald Trump sued the city of west Palm beach to allow Mara largo to have blacks, Latinos and Asian’ s as members. So yeah, burn it stooopid. Because it was Democrats that have run that enclave (Palm beach) for the white 1% for years and years. Your sports takes are as solid as your political takes………..but hey keep hating dumas.
