Mariota 1, Jameis 0

January 7th, 2018

Dirk Koetter famously said, “All that anyone gives a sh*t in this league about is Ws.”

But that quote was a tiny bit vague.

What they really only care about is playoff wins. And now Marcus Mariota has one, a well-earned one — one more than America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Yesterday’s Titans comeback victory in Kansas City was yet another kick to the tender groin of Bucs fans. The icing on the cake was Mariota throwing the huge block to spring his running back to seal the game, as the Titans ran out the clock in the fourth quarter. Seeing Mariota’s Titans teammates swarm him with mad respect after that play made Joe a little a sick. Joe couldn’t eat another award-winning Abe’s Place wing.

Yes, Mariota had a rough year, 13 touchdowns against 15 interceptions in 15 games. Injuries slowed him and he clearly regressed.

But not a shred of that matters now. Mariota, 24 like Jameis, is a playoff-tested quarterback with a win in January. He played well and was a huge part of a huge comeback. And now he’ll get at least one more giant dose of experience next weekend.

If the Titans dare to win another playoff game, a fresh chorus of Jameis doubt will be heard from Naples to New Port Richey.

  1. Etzel Says:

Hate that we judge QBs based off of team wins, but I guess that’s how it is. No playoffs is a Bucs problem, not a Jameis problem.

  2. Jacko101 Says:

Good For Mariota, it’s bitter sweet. All these young QB’s in the playoffs. It’s a team game I get it, but the Bucs will only go as far as Jameis takes us. “Whom much is given, much is required”. 5-11

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

I was in favor of Mariota pre draft for his quickness and accuracy….however once Jameis was taken by the Bucs I have never looked back or said woulda,coulda,shoulda…..Jameis is our QB and I support the team as I have since the first preseason game in 76…..I can criticize Jameis however
check out the footwork and mechanics of every QB playing in the post season…many of Jameis’s accuracy issues are from poor footwork and mechanics…of course his bonehead decisions too

  4. thunderchunkyPA Says:

So Mariota has a damn good O Line, and a beastly running game, neither Jamies can say. The Defense has and ALL PRO and free agent score Brian Orakpo. So, John Robinson builds a playoff team, you know, the right hand man to Licht? meanwhile Licht continues to strike out on free agents, and ignores MAJOR holes on this team, such as DE and RB. While Licht has drafted well, he also has had MAJOR screwups like, oh i don’t know the 2nd round kicker, when this team needed D Line and O line help?

  5. Buc believer Says:

Joe can you PLEASE tell your good readers what you mean by “Marriotta like Winston now has a playoff win?” I am quoting you….verbatim. Is this the same logic that kept calling Koetter a “winning” head coach even though he was below 500. Not trying to show Joe up on his own blog but facts are facts. Maybe Joe has some ghost writers and his editor was out sick this morning.

  6. Buc believer Says:

Correction “ Marriotta like Winston is a playoff tested Qb” those were Joes words.

  7. Dreambig Says:

Buc Believer, Joe said Mariotta, 24 like Jameis. He is referring to them being the Same age.

  8. Jim Says:

Give the Kid credit; he played a great game…

  9. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Buc believer, you miss-read. Mariota is 24 like Jameis, and Mariota is a playoff winning QB.

  10. Mikadeemas Says:

Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl……need I say more!?

  11. Buc believer Says:

    Ahh thanks Thunderchucky!

  12. Mikadeemas Says:

Mariota would have gotten killed behind our offensive line, because he’s fragile.

  13. Dreambig Says:

Mariotta was helped by a good running game. Every team in the playoffs yesterday had beastly RBs. This year was the right time for the Bucs to get theirs but it was so important that they invested a 6th round pick for someone who couldn’t make the team. Huge miss that now is a problem for another off season on top of our long list of defensive needs. I didn’t realize how unhappy I am with our coaching staff and GM until watching how good these playoff teams are and reflecting on our staffs misses and poor decisions.

  14. Buc4life Says:

Just an example of how a couple plays going the other way decide if Mariota is a turnover prone qb not ready for primetime or a gritty clutch playoff winning qb. On the Titans first scoring drive Henry missed a block and Derrick Johnson blew Marcus up forcing a clear fumble which the Chiefs recovered, Triplett insanely ruled forward progress and Titans get 3. Later Mariota made a great scramble to extend the play only to throw the ball right at a chief db. Instead of intercepting it or it being batted to one of the many defenders in the area it was batted right to Marcus for a td. Not taking away from Mariota but the titans dont win without those pure luck plays. Mariota could have had 3 turnovers and no playoff win.

  15. AlteredEgo Says:

Dream….running back beasts….EVERY year in the playoff dominated running backs show their stuff ! A beautiful thing to see !…crushing the will of the opposing team with a methodical BEATING !

  16. Tackleblockwin Says:

That was a fun game to watch. Congrats to the Titans. I’m sure they are happy with their QB, and they should be. But I still rather have Jameis, and I don’t need to think very long to make my decision.

  17. Guzzie Says:

At least we don’t have to hear #WEAPONSFORWINSTON this offseason, let’s start up #WALLFORWINSTON and build up the offensive line, need to upgrade 2-3 spots, definitely need a RG and RT, Dotson is old and never makes it through a whole season and Sweezy is a turnstile, DSmith isn’t great, but he’s serviceable

  18. Grt1 Says:

Are you seriously comparing These two QBs they’re total opposites. Mariota career with not be long because he lacks the ability to be a true pocket passer. His legs will only take him so far, reminds me a lot of Vince Young and Kaepernick. While Jameis is a sit in the pocket passer. Much like Big Ben, Ryan, and Brady. Joe instead of comparing these two guys you should compare the two GMs and how they build a team and how the Titans Gm drafts corners over 5”11.

  19. tnew Says:

How about HC Mike Mularkey 1.. HC Dirk Koetter 0 (way more important stat) or

Jon Robinson 1.. Jason Licht 0

or what about any player on the DLine 1 versus our highest paid player 0

When Winston has a back, offensive line and defense that can take over a game like that in the second half, the Bucs go to a Super Bowl.

Just more to heap on Winston, seems many here see team wins and Winston losses.

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

Guzzie….WallforJamesi….which is why I’d be VERY tempted to traded down

  21. tnew Says:

Quenton Nelson or Bradley Chubb at 7. (Chubb will most likely be gone unless Arden Key puts up a Myles Garrett combine)

  22. DBS Says:

No jack sh!t for Winston. Enough of that last year. Need more on the defensive side this year.

  23. sunshine Says:

Most nfl people thought Mariotta was a better qb in the draft including Gruden . Do you pass up a Florida school guy who will help in pr and attendance?

  24. D the Bucs fan Says:

I wonder what Jason licht thinks of his friend jon Robinson built a playoff team in less time. By making the right decisions in building the Damn trenches. We need to draft oline and dline every single year. Justin evans and kendell beckwith might be pro bowlers 1day hopefully. But a running back or de is what we needed. Licht you can’t keep neglecting the trenches. I will be just drafted dline and oline the entire draft all positions on both lines.

  25. JonBuc Says:

    @ tnew:

You beat me to it…Jon Robinson :1…Bucs/Licht’s Out : zero

The entire culture is different. Mularkey was coaching for his job if you believe the media reports. He wasn’t told 4-11 ( at the time ) is good enough…and tell your best friend Smitty he can come back too…

Mariota is mostly muted…other players on the team ( Lewan, Conklin ) are arse kickers who truly protect their QB and show true leadership.

  26. D-Rome Says:

How about HC Mike Mularkey 1.. HC Dirk Koetter 0 (way more important stat) or

Jon Robinson 1.. Jason Licht 0

I agree with this. The quarterback is the most dependent position on the football field. Mariota’s “win” has more to do with the pieces around him, the coaching staff, and front office leadership. So yes, the Titans win is far more a statement on two organizations rather than two QBs.

Also, the Titans aren’t winning that game if Kelce played four quarters.

  27. Dan Says:

Both qbs are average. But Mariota does seem to deliver more in crunch time. For Winston it’s a guaranteed interception.

  28. D-Rome Says:

Most nfl people thought Mariotta was a better qb in the draft

That is simply not true. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Most people thought Jameis Winston was the most NFL ready quarterback out of the two.

  29. the unknown fan Says:

DBS you are soooooo right! We got him the weapons and the offence STILL can’t put up points. We have ignored the D for years starting with Lovie. The offence has the tallent. Its up to Koetter to pull his head out of his arse and use his players to the best of there abilities and devise a winning scheme. Defense is what we need to draft first and often then look at O line and RB.

  30. MadMax Says:

Well, being one of the BIGGEST critics of JW3 on here until he turned things around, I still say we picked the right one. Its on JW though. He needs to keep playing like that the last 3 games! The minute he F’s up, Im right back on his azz!

But MM had one of the luckiest plays ever, plus a helluva O line, and a RUN game! AND A KICKER!!

Give JW what MM is surrounded by, and even in the NFC South, we’re not in last place.

  31. Tnew Says:

Titans probably don’t win if the officials didn’t blow the forward progress fumble call. They for sure don’t win if you switch any Buccanneer running back for Derrick Henry.

  32. MadMax Says:

Yep Tnew, I forgot about that missed fumble call.

  33. JabooFSUBUCS Says:

Shocked to not see people saying how bad MM played yesterday. I guess the people commenting on here did not watch the game. He missed wide open WRs to start the game, and kept that going throughout. The game winning TD was an epic run by Henry for those who didnt see. MM almost cost them a shot at the playoffs alone with how poor he played down the stretch. People need to get a grip, MM did not push himself past JW by any stretch of the imagination this season. Its a team game.

  34. FR Says:

    Amen AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wins not stats

  35. Jman Says:

Actually the titans line has taken a dramatic step backward with Mularkey predictable offense. Mariota has a bunch of possession receivers with drops. Mariota doesn’t have the talent on offense the Bucs fo with the exception of Henry.

Really Dan because Jameis had us in position to win each of the last 4 games in the 4th quarter with 4th quarter comebacks but our defense gave up the lead. Yesterday the Titans scored with 6 minutes left in the game and the defense held the lead. If our d could do that we might have made the playoffs this year as well.

  37. Joel Says:

Yes. He did look pretty awful most of the game. But most people don’t watch the games.

With that being said, it must be nice to have a defense.

  38. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

LMAO @ BucBeliever! Joe,you don’t need to explain your posts to the reading impaired! SMH!

  39. Jman Says:

JAboob the game winning TD was a golden rope to Eric decker maybe the best pass he’s thrown all tearafter missing an open Davis. The ability to hit a pass like that after an error shows he’s got the mental edge JW does not.

  40. BrianBucs Says:

Mariotta is the true leader of his team and the players respect, follow and like him. Give him credit for getting them this far.
When the Titans picked him at #2 It’s because they were a very bad team. Now they are going into the second round of the playoffs while the Bucs are at home, 5-11. That falls on the GM. Apparently the Titans have done much better at putting a winning roster together

  41. Jman Says:

LOL mad max give mm Evans howard and Godwin and Mm is not in last in the nfc south

  42. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

F# all that! Jamies is WAY better than Mariota!! Mariota is garbage, boring, and not intelligent

  43. Jman Says:

    Mariota also avoids Uber. 2-0

  44. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I also guess that many posting here didn’t watch the game. Mariota was wildly inaccurate. Ndog is completely right too. JW got us a late 4th quarter lead in the last 4 games and Buffalo as well and the defense didn’t get a stop in any of them and we lost them all. Results matter, but you can’t blame the QB when the sh1tty defense just lets every team they face march down the field at the end to win.

  45. ben Says:

ndog ,pls tell us…Are u related to Winston, or buddies, neighbors or went to same school ? No matter what you defend Winston like he is Brady. Maybe in time he will be but nothing but an average qb for now>

  46. Mike Johnson Says:

Mariota is a good Kid. I’ve yet to hear one shoplifting crab leg incident about him or any sexual harrassment/rape allegations either. He seems to be very well grounded. Winning is by..Any means Necessary. And thats what he did. Our talented, well coached Bucs on the other hand……………..?

  47. Dave Says:

There’s absolutely no reason to bring up Mariota. None. It is completely irrelevant.

  48. Waterboy Says:

How about Derek Henry vs. Doug Martin? Or their defense’s ability to shut KC down the 2nd half?

  49. Easy Says:

As soon as the Mariota to Mariota TD pass happened I knew the Chiefs were doomed.

  50. Jman Says:

MAriota made 2 inaccurate passes and he followed the 2nd one with a beautiful td

I respect everyone’s opinion bruddah. Just remembering how many times we’ve been down this road in the past. We never truly protected our former Franchise Quarterbacks.

    • Doug Williams
    • Steve Young
    • Vinny Testaverde
    • Trent Dilfer

Only to see them win with better protection elsewhere.

It’s almost like we’re chasing our own tails – every time we come to the crossroads – we act like we don’t know; which way to go.

Successful franchises always make sure the fortify the Offensive & defensive lines. Why? Because that’s we’re this game is played

So If a Blue Chip prospect is there draft’em.

    —->>>Draft G Quenton Nelson

Note: This was when Nelson was listed by to be a late 1st to 2nd Round Pk.

Not true Ben I posted just the other day it is time for him to quit forcing the ball to Evans and D-jax and play his game. But that being said I actually do watch the games and can see first hand the difference in the two players AND the way they are judged. Mariota made some very nice plays last night but he also made plays that would have caused people on this board to have called for us to cut Winston if he made them but since it was Mariota, it was a great play or being a great leader. Heck I have seen Jameis make that exact block Mariota made last night only to read people on this very site say he is dumb for getting in the way and he messed the play up.Then that throw in the endzone where he caught it are you kidding me, people would have been going crazy of Jameis if he did that. Do you remember the backlash when he made a dumb throw like that in the PRESEAON? Everyone about lost their minds (For the record I was pissed to) but here Mariota is in the playoffs making a throw about as bad and because he gets lucky and it is batted back to him he is great and a playmaker? Jameis needs to improve but it would help some if we could block for him and had a running game or oh yeah not the worst defensive in the NFL. Its like the people on this board expect him to throw, run, kick and stop the other team all by himself cause all that matters is wins and you know he controls everything.

People here say Mariota got lucky and he played an average game. I’m LMAO because when you win? Luck counts! Winning is all that matters in this NFL. By any means necessary. I’ll take average any day of the week. As long as we..WIN!!

  63. Dennis Yauger Says:

can we get the records of quarterbacks when their defense throws a second half shutout and their rb runs for over 100 yds in the second half. Neither thing has much to do with who the qb is.

  64. Ndog Says:

So Mike Johnson do you think Aaron Rodgers and Trent Dilfer are the same quality of player because they both have one Super Bowl title? After all all that matters is wins right? Do you see how silly you sound saying things like that? Context is important you know.

  65. BucFamous Says:

Joe’s troll game is strong today!

Mariota has been much worse with than Winston this year, and gets more praise. He has a better Oline, run game, and defense at his disposal.

Let me know when we hire a good defensive staff and draft a workhorse RB, and then we can truly compare.

Until then, get outta here with that ish…

Just ask Marino if he’d rather have just one..ring. Winning is all that matters. Thats it. To hell with the beautiful spirals and mega completions. JUST WIN. We have been so concerned about creating this great offense and look at whats happenned. Almost last in DEFENSE in the NFl. How you gonna win like that? This team ain’t going nowheres soon. Mybeee 8-8 next year. And thats…If they can get a new DC with some fire and no how. Lombardi said it best..Just five me a WIN. You..can keep the stats!!

  70. BrianBucs Says:

    Mike

I actually think that Ndog is just one of the Joe’s posting, trying to get us all responding to idiotic, moronic fanboy posts.

  71. Ndog Says:

Yes Brian I see a pattern Mariota has a much better running game and a much much better defense so his teams are winning these games head to head. The only time in Jameis career he had a good online and a good running game was his first year starting a FSU and that team, lead by Jameis, has the all time record for most points by a team and that record still stands till this day. It is simple build this team around his strengths and we will be successful. But no we are trying to build around a offensive system instead of our players strengths and that is the biggest problem I have with this coaching staff. As an example it would be like the Titans staff not building their offense around Mariotas running ability. That would be stupid right, well that is exactly what we are doing with Jameis. We should be running a ton more hurry up with a lot for timing routes, then the occasional shots downfield. While he CAN throw a great deep ball he must first get into the flow of the game and that is just his style but we dont play to that. Why do you think he is so good at the end of the game with time running out. He is not thinking and just playing which are the situations our coaches should be putting him in from the jump. Then once he gets settled into a grove then call the game as you see fit. The Titans do a very good job playing to the strength of Mariota but even yesterday he missed on quite few throws and did throw one pick, fumbled the ball despite what some dumb official said and threw a horrible pass with the game on the line that he got lucky that came right back to him. Those are not disputable they are facts but people can choose to put their head in the sand to support their blind hate of OUR QB but it just is what it is.

  72. BrianBucs Says:

Yep, Ndog, Jameis has never missed a pass, thrown an INT or fumbled.
But as I said in an earlier post, the Titans have built a better roster and coaching staff that the Bucs and that falls on the GM.
Jameis may be the most overrated, over hyped and oversold QB in the NFL, but his GM and coaches are helping him look that way

  73. Destinjohnny Says:

    Marcus had a 6’3 250 pound back who runs a 4.4 forty.
He also has a great line

  74. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I don’t know if it will ever happen but I’ll be glad when this board finally arrives at the point that we don’t make #3 look any better trashing MM nor MM any better for those who want to trash #3.

They are separate players compared only because they were drafted 1 and 2 after a long heated debate. They don’t have similar skill sets…they don’t play the same style offense…they have totally opposite leadership styles….they are TWO totally different players. Their personalities couldn’t be more different. Maybe that’s another reason we continually compare them.

But it’s three years now. BOTH players still show a lot of promise…BOTH players still have a LONG way to go to be called great…IF they make it that far.

IMHO BOTH have demonstrated enough to show that they should at minimum be good QB’s if not great.

Bottom line though is it’s just three years…far too small a sample yet to make a definitive decision.

As far as the 1-0 in the playoffs…MM had a great game. But it’s not just a team game it’s a game of opportunity. The Titans barely made the playoffs from the crappiest division in the crappier Conference in the league. That DID make a difference in the OPPORTUNITY to even reach last night’s stage…for #3..Koetter…Licht and the rest of the Bucs as well.

Sour grapes? You bet I’m a Bucs fan but that doesn’t negate the truth.

  75. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Mike Johnson!!!! You nailed it!!!! On both your posts..

    ———-

Let me add : Mariota is a pure class act…you won’t hear or see of any off-season issues with him..he is a lot more mature than the helmet-poker, finger eating, groper of a QB..

Stats don’t mean squat if W’s are not attached to them..

  76. Ndog Says:

And BTW yes winning is all the does matter but since win do you blame or praise one person for winning or losing? To bring winning or losing up in a player vs player situation is just plain stupid. By that argument Barry Sanders was bum compared to Dorsey Levens or Dan Fouts was a bum compared to Brad Johnson it just doesnt make any sense. You have to look at the whole team but you guys just want to say Winston is at fault because we dont win. Cant you see how crazy that sounds when there are some many other people involved? Prime example who is the one guy Jameis did not hit a deep pass to all year? Thats right D-Jax and who is also the one guy that did not show up for OTA’s? Do you think that is just luck? Now should Jameis have hit those throws, absolutley but you cant tell me that had nothing to do with it when most everyone else he got the ball to deep. So ask yourself does he control D-jax coming to OTA’s? Think about it boys and try to get over your blind hate of our QB.

  77. JabooBuc Says:

It’s funny that people see what they want to see to fit a narrative. Marcus Mariota was just plain bad all year. His stats reflect his performance but I watched quite a bit of his play and he didn’t look good. However, he has a strong running game and a solid defense (Dick Lebeau helps a lot).

Think about it, with that running game and defense, he still threw more INTs than TDs. If that were the case in this town with JW there would calls to remove everyone associated with drafting him.

MM played well yesterday while heavily relying on 156 yards from Henry. Running games and defense always travel well. With that said, MM still threw an INT, clearly fumbled at the end of the half which was called incorrectly that would have cost them 3 points, and the pass to himself for a TD was a very fortunate result after making a really bad decision with the football.

One last thing, Jameis and the Bucs went 9-7 last year while playing in the NFC South. This year, Bucs go 5-11 in same division that has 3 teams in the playoffs. Jameis put this team in position to win at least 4-5 games and then had to watch his defense give up leads. Sorry, it’s all about perspective. My perspective is that we clearly have the better QB but the inferior team in a really tough conference.

DK and JL need to put it together this year or get the hell out of town.

  78. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Not like Mariota has a top 5 O-line, or a bruising running back that went off for 150 yards yesterday or anything.

  79. Mike Johnson Says:

You forgot the most important point of all there Jaboo. Mariota WON when it counted. Jameis is going to be fine. But ownership, and coaching need to get there acts together. I always bring up Dan marino because he was a very good QB. Outstanding Stats. Yet no Superbowl. Sure Jameis has had some Fubars. But we got a team who cannot stop anybody. So YOU..got to outscore your opponent. won’t work. Its asking to much of your QB. No matter how good he is. I watch the Titans Defense play all out in the 2nd half. Our D just cannot play that that. We need a complete revamping of our Defense..starting with the coaches. Or..we will be right back here next year with our same old version of, Crying Time Again!

  80. SB Says:

Derek Henry is a BEAST. I liked him more than Zeke when they were entering the draft. If Tenn doesn’t re-sign Murray and Henry becomes the Feature back I am taking him in the second round next yr of my FF draft.

  81. greg Says:

I was a Mariota guy early on in the Jameis/Mariota debate and was pretty pissed when we took Jameis…..I felt that Jameis began to prove me wrong last year and I was impressed with his passion and leadership. This year he regressed into his old FSU habits of poor on-field decision making and less than acceptable accuracy.

Neither of them are a slam dunk after year 3…which might be the most surprising thing of all….between Jameis and Marcus…the right answer may have been neither.

Im all over drafting Vita…..kind of hoping he doesnt do well at the combine so we can get him in the top of the 2nd!! But thats the greedy part of me. Reality, I hope he blows up and finds his landing spot (hopefully here) where he deserves to be!

  83. MadMax Says:

@LUV, if Chubb is taken, whats your take on Fitzpatrick? I think he will be a cant miss player after the combine just like Chubb.

  84. MadMax Says:

@Jman, yeah. And im gonna make soooo much money on this nest round betting against MM. Cant wait….

  85. LifeOfABucFan Says:

MadMax…Minkah Fitzpatrick is my choice for the top spot…

Yes Ma’am. Unfortunately we need big help at both D pass rush and DB to cover where the pass rush is lacking.

  88. Buc68 Says:

Mariota fumbled twice saved by officials, threw another should be pic for a TD pass. 13 tds to 15 pics on season. All this teaches is great defense with a strong running game overcomes below average QB play.

  89. loggedontosay Says:

It took Mariota ten tries to hit the broad side of the barn. He threw a block to win the game not a pass. That offensive line and that defense won that game. If Jameis’ performed anything like Mariota did yesterday, he would be call a bust. Mariota looked like Tebow except there are some throws Mariota can make. Tebow could not make any.

  90. loggedontosay Says:

This is the insanity of being a bucs fan. People will talk up the draft get hyped and crazy about how good the players are we drafted then koetter will do the same thing he did last year and underutilize them we’ll miss the playoffs AGAIN and question whether we really have a talented roster and we’ll start over with another head coach why will start another Purge.

Winston is a better player in a tougher division and had a better defense. Blake bortles is in the playoffs and the world knows how below average he is, all it means is we have a stud quarterback with a crud defense and sorry excuse for coaches

  93. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Mariota has the benefit of a good defense.

  94. Jawo75 Says:

The fact remains that Winston doesn’t have it between the ears. Physically he’s a beast. But you don’t have to be a specimen to win. Being intelligent in key situations is the difference between winning and losing. Sure a better O line, running back, and defensive pass rush would help tremendously. But all those turnovers by the QB have cost us many games. I think he’s always going to be that type of player.

  95. briandorry55 Says:

The best thing he did for their team this season was steal Andy Reid’s play sheet with all the run plays on it.

Some of you are missing one big point. Some QB’s would be tempted to try to get all those 18 points back in one or two series, and would have likely turned the ball over, burying the chance they had. Mariota instead, followed the game plan and was instrumental in getting the victory. Some QB’s aren’t that disciplined.

  98. mark2001 Says:

And yeah… you can’t get 18 points back in one or two series…that is exactly the point.

  101. Buc68 Says:

Yes he followed the game plan. He fumbled twice and should have thrown a pic, all while trailing and got lucky on all 3 occasions. The only other thing that happened was a RB averaged 8 a carry and the D pitched a second half shut out. Great execution of game plan.

What QB ever is a slam dunk? Andrew Luck was supposed to be, how’s that working out? Both the Titans and the Bucs would make the same picks over again if they had to. Will either be in Canton one day, probably not, but without a QB in this league you’re screwed (see, the Browns), so you take talented ones and roll the dice.

  103. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

This article fails to mention that Mariota had 13 Tds vs 15 ints this season.
    Abysmal.

The team has Pro Bowlers on both sides of the ball AND special teams.

Before yesterday, the coach was on the hot seat because of how abysmal the passing game had been.

Plus – Mariota got lucky with one of the flukiest TDs (to himself) in NFL history.
I agree that W’s matter most – but context matters.

If the Bucs fix the trenches, adding an overwhelming number of bodies to COMPETE and improve both lines, Jameis will thrive.

Fix the trenches, fix the Bucs.

  104. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

To all of the “stats are for losers” guys up there in the comment…

Based on that over-simplified mindset a guy who blows all of his rent money on lottery tickets but defies the astronomical odds and WINS is smarter and better than a shrewd financial planner who has figured out how to buy a home, invest, and grow his money every year?

So, we should all just go buy lottery tickets with all of our money? Come on.

Wins matter most but understanding context and using it to make wise choices will lead to FAR more wins over the long haul.

    Oh, and by the way…

Can’t help but to smh at you folks. #Uber #Crablegs

  108. JabooBuc Says:

Great post Tony. All these idiots talking about JW’s turnovers seem to be okay with the fact that MM actually had more turnovers than TD’s which is not the case with JW.

It’s a team game people. We don’t say Legarrette Blount is a better running back than Adriane Peterson because he has a super bowl ring and AP doesn’t. That’s just stupid.

  109. cmurda Says:

I know that there’s a million if’s in the NFL, but I’m chalking the Titans winning to the Chiefs second half of the season meltdown. It was on full display. Kelce with the concussion crushed KC’s offense and in the 2nd half the Chiefs became 1 dimensional and the Titans good defense rose to the occasion. The Mariota pass that gets batted by Revis and goes right back to him as he scampers in was ridiculous. It was a terrible read by Mariota. Usually those tipped passes get picked. I will admit in the 2nd half Mariota was pretty good but this was the fading Chiefs. The ride ends next week. No way can Mariota get away with his average at best play next week. The Titans are blessed playing in the worst division in the NFL.

  110. Pickgrin Says:

    “He played well”

I wouldn’t go that far Joe.

Credit for coming back from down 3-21 for sure and Mariota made some nice plays with his legs and a few decent throws.

But I can see why he threw more INTs than TDs this year – throwing into double and triple coverage with that weak ass arm. Completely missed a wide open Davis for a TD – etc.

Winston is obviously the better NFL QB.

  115. mike10 Says:

It’s the rest of our team. You can ignore it as much as you’d like on this site, but our offensive line needs to be improved upon, and we’ve been saying it for at least 2 years! Look at those draft picks for TN on the line!

  116. DalvinCookRules Says:

one plays for a team called the Bucs, the other does not… JWs turnovers and bad decisions are on him, but he has proved to be a better QB than Mariota, that’s the bottom line.

Barry Sanders was on a super crappy team for many years, and ultimately retired without ever sniffing a SuperBowl, versus his inferior counterpart, Emmitt Smith, who won multiple SuperBowls. There are even some who will claim Smith was the better RB, so again, the team you play for does matter in how you are generally regarded by the commoners.

  117. Vivian Says:

2 cents from a die hard Texan: Yes our division is the weakest in the NFL. I watched Titans get a QB, 2 headed monster at RB, OL, and defense. Jags built a monster defense, beast at RB, and better play at QB. Jags/Titans in playoffs because of Colts/Texans injuries. However, Jags/Titans built like NFC (relying on run/defense). Bucs need to get a defense, RB, OL, and kicker. Some games Bucs had lead but defense/kicker failed to close out game. Hope Bucs do better in FA and draft to stay competitive in NFC. I’m enjoying the changing of the guard to these young QBs.

  118. Ndog Says:

For the comment above saying neither of these QBS will be in HOF be careful. If Jameis just keeps doing what he has been doing and plays till his late 30’s his stats alone would get him a legit shot. No I am not saying he belongs in the HOF but facts are facts and he already holds records for TDS and yards for his age so on his pace it is certainly possible and in fact probably if he just plays for a long time he will actually get there.

  119. loggedontosay Says:

    BrianBuc,

You are not mad with me; you are mad with the truth. You typed that I should watch games and not rely on headlines. Well, the headlines are outright hateful towards Jameis. You see, I read and watch every game. Another statement you made without using reasoning. SAD!

  120. Rrsrq Says:

Blake Bortles and the Jags just won and he ran for more yards than he passed, because he couldn’t hit open receivers. Why did they win, not Bortles, but defense. When we get our trenches right, many will be saying on this site, Jameis, Jameis, Jameis… Just signing C. Campbell could’ve catapult his team.

  121. Rrsrq Says:

I want to know what is the mentality to be a franchise QB, as if the posters actually know. I am pretty sure Bradshaw and Namath and Favre all had some lose change up top, but they had what it takes and just like the Titans have Mariotta’s back with 13 td’s and 15 int’s, Jacksonville has Bortles back and I do not know his stats but he was terrible passing the ball today, Bucs should have Jameis back

  122. Rod Munch Says:

LOL! The Titans won in spite of Mariota. It’s like saying the 1997 Bucs won their first rounder against Detroit because of Trent Dilfer.

Man I really don’t dislike Mariota, but when people compare him to Winston it’s a joke since Winston, unlike Mariota, is a real NFL QB that can sit in a pocket and make things happen. Mariota meanwhile is all about his legs, and some pact with the devil since he can do things like get sacked and fumble the ball and have the refs call “forward progress” – on a straight up sack, I’ve never seen that called before in 30+ years of watching. Then the guy can throw into quadople coverage at the goal line, one of the worst plays you’ll see all year, and then have the ball batted back into his hands. All of that plus playing the easiest schedule of any QB since entering the league. The kid has some fantastic luck, and good for him for that. Anywho beating Alex Smith when it matters (you see Alex Smith is a choke artist) isn’t much of an achievement, but hey if Mariota can do it next week, then I’ll rethink everything.

  123. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Ok sure, let’s just overlook the fact that Mariota plays in the worst division in football, has a stout oline, a great running game, and a much better defense. Mariota wins this round, but in many years people will look at Jameis as head and shoulders above Mariota.

  128. Tbbucs3 Says:

Marcus Mariota 13 TDs 15 ints

Jameis Winston (In less games) 19 TDs 11 Ints

Look at the stats, it’s simple. Football is a team game. You win as a team and you lose as a team. Winston is obviously the better QB with the worse team.

  129. Bucsace Says:

Neither Winston nor Mariotta will be HOF QB’s, so I guess it’s basically a wash ………however, I don’t see the “clown” factor with Mariotta that seems to surround Winston…….to each his own!

  130. FFS Says:

Soany off field issues with Marcus…and can’t win a playoff game..hasn’t made playoffs yet…oh wait..Mariota…he did that…suck it Jaemis lovers

  131. Jim Says:

I don’t fault Winston, but I fault the all-Jameis-all the time mentality that has seized Tampa Bay. Winston is a mediocre QB with potential and issues. His elite status remains TBD. Everybody forgets about the #weapons4winston nonsense that thought that giving Jameis a top-shelf receiver corps would result in wins-wins-wins. Stupid. Now it’s Oh! No pass rush! Oh, no OLine! Well, we gave Winston weapons instead. Now we’re watching the play-offs at home. Again.

  132. MikeGlennonFan Says:

Brad Johnson has more playoff wins then both of them.

  133. JF Says:

Mariotas team is not superior talent wise to the Bucs. Research all stats. Even with the horrible season Marcus still has 50 Tds to 25 ints which isnt too bad. Plus he was hurt all year yet didnt use it as a crutch the way Jameis did. Tell yourselves he’s got more help to make you feel better about yourself but marcus has superior mental and emotional toughness to the crybaby wearing number three in pewter.

  134. JF Says:

Oh also Mariota doesn’t run very often, always slides and never takes a hit on a scramble he’s only been injured in the pocket.

  135. BucTrooper Says:

Let’s give Jameis 157 ground yards from his RB weekly and see how deep in the playoffs he goes.

Nonsense post meant to rile up the crowd.

  136. Eric Says:

All the Winston excuse makers keep saying that he won because he has a running back and good defense. Well Jameis wins because he has the mist superior group of recievers and Tight ends in the game. Name me another team with that much firepower in the passing game. Ill wait…. As for the running game last I checked Mariota is part of the running game which makes it unpredictable for teamns to defend. In other words he creates mismatches because he is a great runner himself. Defenses must account for him on every play so it prevents teams from zeroing in on the running back. The funniest thing is hearing people talk about Mariota being inaccurate, HELLO we have the most innaccurate QB in the league. Djax before this year had the highest yards per catch in the NFL for years and with different QB’s yet he comes here and has a season low. Coincidence? I think not, and dont give me the bs of “well he missed ota’s” you sound stupid if you only knew thats what he has done his whole carreer yet that is the sole reason why Winstin SUCKS on deep balls. Honestlly I have grown to hate Winston even more when I hear all the ridiculous defense’s the FSU nerds cone up with. Its like a cult or something, so blinded you cant see a single flaw in his game and if he majes a mistake is always someone elses fault . Its either Koetters fault, Martin’s fault, O lines fault, referees fault, defenses fault, owners fault and in some cases the fans fault. Gimme a break your all a bunch of delusional ball lickers, branch davidian cult members, cuckolds!

  137. JabooBuc Says:

Eric, you really need to get a grip. JW defenders, at least this one, don’t believe he is without flaw. But I live in the real world and understand that we drafted a 20 year old with 2 years of college playing experience. You should expect flaws. The good news is that he has shown improvement each year over last.

This post by Joe was comparing MM to JW and many in this town think the Bucs should have taken MM and now use the fact that he has won a playoff game as proof of that point. However, MM has not progressed Year over year like Jameis and those are facts.

Also, nobody denies Jameis has weapons at receiver and TE. He’s actually thrown for a lot of yards and those passes are going to somebody. But even you must admit this team can’t run the ball. And, more importantly, this defense can’t stop a damn thing. This the reason they rank dead last in team D.

So Eric, you can keep on hatin’ but it seems pretty clear the Bucs made the right choice at the time.

  138. Trubucfan22 Says:

Mariotta’s foot work, accuracy and quick release are very reminiscence of Aaron Rodgers. Jameis has a long release, trips over his own feet repeatedly and makes poor decisions on and off the field. Its glaringly obvious the fix was in for Jameis. There is no way a rational thinking scout would pick Winston over Marriota.
