Accountability II

January 10th, 2018

Axed by top-shelf NFC squad.

Moves and non-moves in the NFL get more curious by the day.

Joe already noted how the Stinking Panthers, who have been to the playoffs in four of the last five seasons, including a Super Bowl trip, ran off offensive coordinator Mike Shula and quarterback coach Ken Dorsey. That came despite Carolina having one of the better running games in the NFL and developing pouty Cam Newton into a true franchise quarterback.

Then overnight, per Curtis Crabtree of ProFootballTalk.com, the Seahawks ran off offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, despite the Seahawks getting to the postseason in six of the last eight years (two Super Bowls and one Lombardi Trophy). And Bevell developed Russell Wilson into one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks.

Yet the current defensive staff of the Bucs, as Joe typing this here story, responsible for the worst pass defense in the NFL and unable to develop a young cornerback or any sort of a edge rush no matter how much Team Glazer loot is thrown at players, seems to be secure in their jobs.

Either someone at One Buc Palace has a very dry sense of humor, or certain folks are tight with the right people.

Bucs going to interview him for OC?

  2. lightningbuc Says:

The fact that Jason Licht is still around tells you all you need to know about this clown show.

  3. bucs_365 Says:

    @BB,
I live in Seattle. I can tell you – Bevell would be a downgrade.

  4. Patrickbucs Says:

BB their offense was basically street ball with Wilson, we should not IMO.

  5. LakeLand Says:

Only the Bucs settle for Mediocre

  6. Pickgrin Says:

    Wash, rinse, repeat

How many “fire the defensive staff” articles are allowed per day Joe?

  7. LakeLand Says:

    The Bucs scored 20.9 PTS/G
    They gave up 23.9 PTS/G

So they gave up 3 points more than they scored
And they bring back the GM and the coaching staff

And Buc fans are wondering why they are on a 10 year playoff drought

  8. LifeOfABucFan Says:

You know..i had tweeted your article last night..I was livid on the Spence’s quote…and this morning I saw quite a few people had read my tweet and your article..

And this one will also keep me up tonight..

OBP must have some really nice surprise for us..news coming soon!! NOT!!!!!!!!

its not the defensive staffs fault….its the “STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE”

    that’s why we cant:
    -rush the passer
    -develop young cb talent
    -cant score

its all, ” STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE” fault…..and lovie…..GO BUCS!!!!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Anyone know what happened to 87…….did he change his name? Get run again?

  12. 813bucboi Says:

smitty, GMC and the DB coach must have some photos of the glazers pinching each others booty or something…..

I still cant believe teams that finished above .500 are making the effort to get better while we’re comfortable with a 5-11 record…..

in the front office there’s, no sense of urgency….no one’s angry….no one’s jealous….everyone is satisfied with 5-11…..great….GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Dave Pear Says:

    TBBF,
I was wondering that same thing.
I have not heard anything about him since like the middle of the season.
Him and NOSBOS are both MIA.

  14. BucEmUp Says:

I think Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter are pretty tight, and I think Koetter has persuaded Licht to keep his staff in place. The last couple of games I saw our DB’s playing tighter but my question is how long will it take Mike Smith to realize he needs to play more aggressive? Another 14 games? On top of that I don’t think the Galziers give a crap. I think they need to step in and do some persuading themselves but then again thats Licht’s job. Just a big circle jerk of bull crap. Sick of it. This team has wasted more talent between players and coaches than I though possible. They will hit the reset button and fire everyone AGAIN next year and probably trade Jameis to the Patriots for a 6th rnd pick. This team freikin sucks.

  15. unbelievable Says:

Haven’t seen NOSBOS since we started losing…

87 was back for a bit but haven’t seen him in a while either.

Honestly I’ve only been spending about 1/4 of the time around here as I used to…

You prefer Joe write articles praising the jobs that Jay Hayes and Jon Hoke have done? If so, you have stumbled upon the wrong website.

You have been commenting here for years. You know full well Joe doesn’t bury his head when it comes to a problem he sees. Not about to start now.

Hey, the Bucs may keep the current staff. If that happens, better hope the Bucs don’t draft a defensive end or corner. Given recent history, there is nothing to suggest those two can develop a rookie.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

I’m not a Mike Smith truther, and I’m not in favor of him returning as the DC (although I think he should be on the team, as the HC and move Dirk back to OC), but this guy had 7 years as OC. This seems like a change for the sake of change, just to get guys out of their comfort zone. Mike Smith shouldn’t be the DC since it doesn’t seem like he really gets it, however a strong case can be made that with very little talent in the defensive backfield and with no pass rush, what can you possibly expect?

Anyways I don’t see much of anything special from Mike Smith’s defense that you couldn’t get from hiring a high school coach that grew up playing the basic 4-3 defense setting on Madden, well except in Madden they don’t let you automatically play your corners 15 yards off the LOS on 3rd and 3.

NICE Joe!! A very astute observation. but very NICE!!!

  19. Stevbobucsfan Says:

Maybe the Glazers have to much money tied up in the defensive coaches and can’t afford to let them go with the notation of maybe having to pay the new coaches and the out going coaches

  20. ndog Says:

Cam Newton true franchise QB? This is the same site that repeats the phrase every 5 minutes we have the 4th best QB in the division. Well lets take a look at the numbers from this year shall we:

    Yards Winston: 3,504 Cam: 3,302
(BTW Cam also threw 50 more passes than Jameis),
    TDs Winston: 19 Cam: 22,
    INT’s Winston: 11 Cam: 16,
    Comp%: Winston: 63.8% Cam 59.1%

So based on the above and if Cam is a “clear franchise QB” then what does that make our “4th best QB in the division” since he is better in basically ever passing category after only 3 years in the league?

  21. Joe Says:

    pewterpirate99:

Thank you. It’s sad. In a perfect world, the Bucs should draft a DE or CB high. But with the current defensive staff, until proven otherwise, that sure smells like wasted picks.

Given the fact that it seems unlikely Koetter would return for 2019 if the Bucs have a losing record, the Bucs are painted into a corner to go all George Allen and overpay for 30-something defensive players.

  22. LakeLand Says:

Cam Newton is a dual-threat QB

    Rushing
    4,320 Yards
    52 Touchdowns

    Passing
    25,074 Yards
    158 Touchdowns

He also is a inaccurate QB who if keep in the pocket is not a real threat. I am about tired of hearing how he is a “franchise QB” when it is clear the book is out on him. Keep him in the pocket and problem solved, period. Not to mention with him running so much he will not last so how is he a “franchise QB” when his career will be over well before most highly paid QB’s? I don’t want a runningback taking my snaps I want a QB, sorry you disagree.

  24. Guzzie Says:

Ndog….really dude, the only stats that matter are wins and losses, I hate Cam Newton period, but in the 3 years Jameis has been a pro, how games did Cam take over and win, who has a MVP and Super Bowl appearance, and who has been to the playoffs each year, compared to Jameis it’s no contest

  25. LakeLand Says:

    In 2017

Cam Newton rushed for 754 yards
    6 Touchdowns
    46 First Downs

Jameis Winston rushed for 135 yards
    1 Touchdown
    7 First Downs

Cam Newton does whatever it takes to win

  26. Guzzie Says:

Hopefully we eventually get a competent coaching staff and Jameis can rise above the 4th best QB, how many more years can Brees play, and when will Cam breakdown physically, within the next 5 years Jameis should be the top dog barring stupidity, injury, coaching, and groping

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Guzzie

Winston has yet to play with a defense as 1/2 as good as the one’s that Newton plays with typically. It’s not a fair comparison to bring up wins and losses because of that alone.

We’ve all seen this – just this year alone- where Winston put the team in position to win like 4-5 games that the defense or kicker choked away the game single-handily. He has been clutch in every sense of the word since he’s been here – but no one wins consistently with a bottom of the league defense.

  28. Eric Says:

The glazer boys are in coast mode, as they have done before. They see the down tick in ratings and attendance and figure they might as well pull their heads into their shell and ride it out.

Kind of like when they came up with the fools gold thing and got Raheem nothing to work with.

Typical Glazer behavior. Won’t hear anything from them any time soon. Not expecting much of an effort in free agency either.

  29. James Walker Says:

I’ll take Winston over that “hoodie loser” Newton any day.

  30. LakeLand Says:

Why should Cam just sit in the pocket? His number 2 WR is Russell Shepard. His number 3 WR is Kaelin Clay. Without Cam running the ball, the Panthers wouldn’t have won 7 games this season.

  31. LakeLand Says:

    Those are Bucs rejects

  32. Rashad Says:

Bring Tom cable in. He’s better than Warhop

  33. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Joe

OK you’ve pointed out that two franchises have cut loose successful coaches for no apparent reason, or at minimum not because of anything with their team’s record.

Could it be possible though that one or both of these franchises made a mistake?
I would be most worried about Carolina. Hope the next guy in can handle as you call him Joe “pouty” Cam Newton. For all we know pouty Cam may be the reason Shula and friend got launched.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

I really hope Carolina has already inked Norv Turner to a deal and doesn’t go after Bevell.

  35. webster Says:

    @ joe

This is getting ridiculous. What do you not understand that the coordinator was there for 6 years. That is why he was fired. He was given ample enough time to prove his worth. When he first got the job, seattle’s offense was a joke and the organization did not fire him. They let him continue to work it out. Again, great organizations do not fire coaches after one bad year. Its not called accountability. It called stupidity if the bucs were to keep doing that. You buc fans need to open your eyes.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

Aah yes, yet another JBF article where Joe pulls the old switcharoo. Pound on 2 teams for firing their OCs, then voila … pound on Scapegoat Smitty & the Bucs’ defense once again. Masterful job Joe, but it’s getting easier & easier to see them coming.

And yet, never a REAL article on the poor job Jason Licht has done in building this Bucs’ T-E-A-M over his 4-year longevity as our illustrious GM. Keep praising the Bucs’ #18 offense that scored a whole 335 points … 28 of which came from the defense, not counting numerous others that came from the great field position off of turnovers provided by, oh yes, the Bucs’ defense.

Your last sentence … “Either someone at One Buc Palace has a very dry sense of humor, or certain folks are tight with the right people” … hit it right on the head. And those ‘certain folk’ are most certainly named JASON LICHT.

  37. Espo Says:

Dungy went through an OC each year and the NEVER had an offense. If sticking with Smith’s defense next year doesn’t improve, and neither strategy works, it proves it’s all about the players.

  38. Lord Cornelius Says:

And they just let Tom Cable go.

Funny how much changes so fast in the NFL.

Hayes was supposed to be like a defensive line master – and was a hugely applauded signing by most when we made it – yet it seems he’s lost his touch.

Cable was also thought of highly I thought for O-line coaching; at least before the last few years.

I’d have thought that at a minimum we’d be looking into new secondary coaches/ new secondary philosophies / and a new QB coach; and D-line coach. Hayes pedigree let’s me believe it’s more of a talent / GMC cancer issue

jk on the GMC cancer thing lol. Well maybe half serious 😉 lol

  39. AlteredEgo Says:

  46. 941bucsfan Says:

Sorry Joe but Jay hayes is a damn good coach.. these scrubs on the d line have reached their potential. I find it hard to believe that we can blame D line coaches for the lack of rush for the last 10+ years

  47. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs were developing the young guys in 2015 and they fired the Head Coach and the defensive staff. The Bucs started 6 rookies and played 4-5 more in 2015 and they played well.

  48. SB Says:

Lol Dave Pear, You said that not me. I get along well with Nos. Hard to believe that a Nole is ready to give up on him already and I said so. Personally I am hoping for Christian Wilkins if he blows up at the Combine.

  49. SB Says:

    Christian Wilkins Scouting Report
    By Charlie Campbell

    Strengths:
    Excellent athlete
Fast at the point of attack
    Instinctive
    Dangerous interior pass-rusher
Closes on quarterbacks in a hurry
    Disruptive
    Strong hands
Uses hands and feet at same time
    Good rip move
    Technically sound interior defensive lineman
    Repertoire of pass-rushing moves
    Splash plays
    Quick feet
    Good get-off
    Ability to shed blocks
    Rare athletic skill set
Strong at the point of attack
    Agile
    Can bull through offensive linemen
    Quality run defender
Not easy to move at the point of attack
    Good vision
    Carries weight well
    Successful against good competition
    Ready to contribute quickly
    Extremely versatile
Can play a variety of techniques in a 4-3 or 3-4
    Durable
    Team leader

    Weaknesses:
Lacks speed to be a full-time defensive end in the NFL
Can have some quiet stretches and games

  50. Cover Deuce Says:

This is the consequence of the failed Gruden overtures and the price of ownerships very public flirtations with another coach while they still had one under contract. Now everyone in the country knows Bucs ownership was ready to knife Koetter. He has some of the worst job security in the league. Nobody wants to take a job on this staff when it’s likely you’ll be interviewing for another one in less than a year.

  51. Issic Haggins Says:

Defense needs two New D Ends , three new upgraded corners to compete

Offense needs Two new o line and a Rb

Draft may provide maybe one possibly two , Good Luck on keeping your Jobs !!!

Cut Martin and Baker to get things started !!!

  52. sj_bucsfan Says:

As I have mentioned here before most of this seasons losses were a direct cause of the defenses inability to stop either pass or run when they needed to. soft zone coverage’s, lack of pass rush & basic tackling skills were just icing on the proverbial cake. I am most concerned that the (so far) attitude of One Buc Place is; everything is fine how we have things set up, no need to “rock the boat”! maybe there are changes coming down the pike but if Smitty is still in charge I see nothing of more of the same ahead for next season. I am still baffeled that a man can have one of the worst (if not the worst) defenses in the entire NFL and still have a job! Only time will tell.

Maybe Cams coaches do whatever it takes as opposed to Dirk Koetter bc Winston had 6 rushing TDs his rookie year.

  54. DB55 Says:

So I heard today that the ATL def was ranked 32nd in the league in 2014. Coincidence? I think not.

  55. Issic Haggins Says:

Hold On !!! Let’s Back up !!! Are the people responsible for thinking this D could go to the playoffs with a 35 year old, VH toast and and their free agents at corner …………. Is this the same clown group that just said they want Grimes back , hey not a real bad idea as long as you have 3 other good corners !!! Grimes would be lucky to play 10 games next year !!! I will assure you they would pipe dream themselves into thinking he can be a #1 corner for 16 games !!! Love Grimes but from a personnel perspective he is your #4 corner anything else is losing football

I clearly stated before the season that this corner group had not a chance to allow this D to be good !!! This stuff isn’t that hard and yet they are already starting in the same direction !!!

  56. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Get ready for an Accountability part 3 article after this weekend!!!

Teams are making the necessary coaching changes to win and the Bucs???? Well we’re not doing jack sh!t!!!!

  57. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

When is the article coming on the horrible job licht is doing? the man has ZERO clue on building a team… 5 years in there should be a solid buffalo/philly defense that gives up 13/game or a stud RB/OL or run game the bucs got jack squat and no kicker and gets u 5-11

  58. darin Says:

I love it when teams fire their coordinators for having bad years. Players get cut. Bad coaching in this league shouldnt be allowed in an organization longer than a season. Theres too many guys out there who can be great, just need the chance. Bevell, cable, shula etc all had bad years. Gota take the talent you have and adjust the unit accordingly. The fact nobody has gotten canned so far on tbe bucs is crazy. Huge mistake too. Also leaves not much to look forward to. Crazy. This coaching staff has shown no ability to adjust, game to game, in game anytime.

  59. TonyC Says:

Simple solution that these idiots can’t seem to figure out: Bring in a competent running back that can get you at least (wooh) 1000 yards rushing and all problems are solved on offense. If Jameis had a running game to work with he would be immediately successful. If the “idiots” had drafted Kareem Hunt (who I wanted) we would have been at least 9-7 with this pathetic defense.

  60. TonyC Says:

If Peyton Barber can average 3.9 yards PC (he’s average at best) then imagine what a competent back could do. This whole thing is not not that complicated on the offensive side. Defensively we need wholesale change on the D-Line.. As far as db’s are concerned is Malcolm B available in free agency this year?

  61. Larrywoods3 Says:

Has anyone stopped to think that maybe just maybe the organization wanted to see if smith can get it together next year, when they won’t be on the hook for more money paying another coach to sit at home again?

  62. Bobby M. Says:

Maybe the Bucs gut feeling is Winston ends up suspended and next year is a waste. Why invest resources on a season that could be statistically done by the 5th week? Bucs owners are focused on value not winning at all costs….

  63. Since76 Says:

In fairness, shouldn’t there also be articles about firing an offensive staff that has gotten that benefit of lots of high draft picks, plus free agents, but still only musters 8 points per game in the first half?

  64. Patrickbucs Says:

    What 76 said

  65. DayOnePaul Says:

There’s no accountability in this organization. The coach doesn’t DEMAND from the players. The GM doesn’t DEMAND from the coach. And the owners don’t DEMAND from either of them. They all say they want to win, as if they’re wishing for a royal flush in a poker game, and if the winning doesn’t appear in a few years, they blow it all up and start over. Players aren’t reprimanded on the sidelines for careless effort. Nobody on this team makes anyone around him better. It’s systemic. You can change coaches and coordinators and GMs til you’re blue in the face, but the permeating non-confrontational mentality of below mediocrity stays the same.

  66. Joe Says:

I find it hard to believe that we can blame D line coaches

Who you going to blame, the running backs coach for failed edge rushes?

And yet, never a REAL article on the poor job Jason Licht has done in building this Bucs’ T-E-A-M over his 4-year longevity as our illustrious GM.

Sorry, Joe’s not a fiction writer. Wrong website.

  67. Reach87 Says:

Bad math. Who knows exactly why Bevel was fired? Who knows what his situation with the organization was? All speculation, which doesn’t mean squat to the Bucs situation. Also, our season just ended. Who on this site knows what our staff will look like next month, let alone next season?

  68. BoJim Says:

‘or certain folks are tight with the right people.’

Martin will probably be the starter again this year. lol
