Koetter: Fan Questions Are Better Than Media’s

December 13th, 2017

Since it’s Jon Gruden week at One Buc Palace in advance of Chucky’s Ring Of Honor induction on Monday night, here’s one thing Chucky didn’t do when he was head coach — and something he should consider if he ever is one again.

Sit down for an hour and answer a barrage of fan questions. That wasn’t Chucky. His style was more of the slick one-liner in a news conference, versus thoughtful answers to passionate fans.

Dirk Koetter, though, engages fans on Fridays via the Buccaneers Radio Network. The rapid-fire action is a true breath-of-fresh-air head coach’s show compared to some the Bucs have had in previous years. (Joe’s going to play nice today.)

Koetter’s attitude on the show is “bring it on.”

On Friday, he was hit with one simple query: “Who asks better questions, media or fans?”

“Fans by far,” Koetter said with a laugh.

“I think both ask good questions. But I think overall, fans ask questions [that are their own.] I think sometimes media has a tendency to ask questions they heard somewhere else.”

Joe agrees. There’s far too much BS, tip-toeing and nonsense in a typical Bucs and NFL news conference. It’s like a Charles Sims run on first down.

Joe would love to see a select few fans get a shot to join a head coach news conference and ask questions every week. Hey Coach, what’s with Kwon Alexander’s tackling? He Coach, why did Jason Licht put George Johnson on the training camp roster and waste everyone’s time when we could have looked at a young DE? Hey Coach, do you ever just want to smack Jameis in the head after a dumb turnover?

Be innovative, Bucs. Make it happen. Be interesting. Be entertaining. Dare to engage fans with real creativity.

Qualified agreement contingent upon serious fan screening for basic knowledge, anger level(if any), troublesome personal biases and ability to speak clearly and rationally. For starters.

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Hey coach, why do you keep running that idiotic screen play to Adam Humphries?
Hey coach, why do our DBs play 10 yards off the ball and yet STILL back-pedal?

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

The worst questions come from the media that have already written the story and are just asking the question and pointing to the answers that will already fill their narrative!!!!!! leading questions if you will!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe Joe can do a fan poll question of the week????? exp… Coach Koetter, How important is it for a RB to pass protect because Joe does not under stand it????????

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

Still can’t fathom why people are so anxious to have Gruden coach this team…..we haven’t had a decent front-office exec since Rich McKay and it was Gruden who ran McKay off…..used to refer to him as “lawyer-boy”……would love to see where this franchise would be today if McKay was still running it….

  5. Arealbucsfan Says:

How about relieving urself of play calling duties and bring some one say, idk, Joe Philbin. Runs a west coast, and I think Jameis would do well in that scheme

  6. DB55 Says:

    Coach

Why do you not jam receivers? Why does the def literally go out of their way to avoid contact with receivers within 1 yard of the los or 5 yards beyond it?

I ask only bc last week kwon literally avoided touching Golden Tate 1 yard past the los, Tate proceeded to burn LVD for a 14 yard gain, a first down and game over.

    Why coach why?

Follow-up. What gives you confidence in bj and munchkin? What have they done to improve the production of your qb and wr? Please be specific.

If you could ask either of these questions at the next press conference joe I’ll be sure to send a rainbow sprinkled ice cream cone to Abe’s place on Sunday for you. Deal?

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

All I want for Christmas is for the Bucs to be ahead @ 1/2 time MNF……that is all…

  8. NFLNut Says:

Much of the media is lazy and simply parrots the narratives of other media … it’s boring

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs will go 4-12. fake news? All hail Trumpism!!

  10. tmaxcon Says:

hey Coach how many more head coach / gm combinations will cancer93 run out of town before glazer clowns figure it out and eradicate the losing culture once and for all.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    AlteredEgo

so the defense can choke another second half lead away?

  12. AlteredEgo Says:

can’t choke a lead …unless you have one
    I am being kind…

  13. ElioT Says:

Well why the h*ll don’t the Joes or Ira ask these questions?

Are you guys not at the press conferences?

    Confusing…

  14. AlteredEgo Says:

Elio….media perks provided by the organization

  15. Lakeland Says:

I have a strange feeling that the Bucs will be honoring Jion Gruden during the middle of a Blowout game.

  16. WyldKat Says:

They cannot publicly ask questions in a way that permanently torpedoes their relationship with the coaches, players, or organization.

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    WyldKat

Integrity and Fact should trump relationships or pansy arse players feelings.

  18. Lord Cornelius Says:

    oh man..

1 – What was your offensive philosophy and plan for using the players we have? Why did it take 14 weeks to run a screen to Howard? Why does this offense not feature short options routinely within the play design outside of designed screens? Why are we barely using up-tempo when Winston has been successful in it?

2 – Why are you calling the plays you call in the red zone? Why are you targeting Desean Jackson in the red zone at all instead of using more high % plays with bigger targets? Why aren’t you calling as many play action roll outs – a high % play for Winston scoring TDs? Why are you barely featuring Howard there? Why does your run to pass decision making become confusing and baffling at that point? Why do you ever run low % outside sweep runs within the 5 yard line?

3 – Why would you give Adam Humphries more snaps than Chris Godwin considering Godwin’s playmaking ability? Why wasn’t Djax used more in the slot with Godwin outside? Where are you creating mismatches? Why are you running personnel groups with Brandon Myers in the play?

4 – Why would you start Doug Martin all year when it’s visible to everyone Barber is a better running back? If you think it sends a bad message about loyalty; you’re essentially saying that “being loyal” is more important than not playing the best players that give you the best chance to win. It sends a message that poor play isn’t punished and that good play is not rewarded.

Those are the main ones off the top of my head. On top of more general franchise questions of –

-why did we ignore the biggest hole on the team (edge rush) again?
-why do we not make in game adjustments when the other team is obviously targeting a certain player for continued success (Julio one week; Eric Ebron last week)? Sure you may give up a play to someone else but jesus christ at least fight back against what they are dictating to you and force them to adjust.
-why do we play such soft zone coverage; when it seems we’ve had more success in press coverage?

  19. Evolvingbucfan Says:

Is that Davin Joseph in the picture? Him and Chiti are probably the coolest guys i have ever talked too from the Bucs.(not the question for Coach Koetter)

Coach, when will you give up Play calling duties and let your O.C. run wild with all these weapons?

Coach, How much was loyalty involved in your decision to hire Mike Smith? was it more based off performance or loyalty?

Hey here’s an idea- why don’t YOU ask some of those questions to the head coach?

    @DB55

    @LORD CORNELIUS
I appreciate you guys, because I honestly am not feeling these so called media experts, who with every stroke expose their bias.
They seem to be trying to pin Dirk’s demise and the team’s production on JW.

    PLAYERS PLAY, COACHES, COACH
Anyone who wants to know the true stats for JW vs MM can google them and find, the Titans are leading inspite of their QB (Mariota), they have an effective running back, you can look at New Orleans, and see how a RB has helped the great Brees.

Anyone interested can go to this link below or to instagram (it is in 3 parts) and ck JW’s msg to a kid about ignoring bulling and human cruelty:

Joe would love to see a select few fans get a shot to join a head coach news conference and ask questions every week.

As for Johnson, Joe’s not wasting his time or anyone else’s asking about a known stiff who is no longer on the team. What’s the point?

Asking a coach if he wants to assault his quarterback would very quickly lead to Joe having his credentials yanked. However, Koetter is available for phone calls from fans weekly on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

  23. George Says:

    Tom Edrington

If you want to point to one factor that has had a bad affect on this franchise, losing Rich McKay is it.

  24. George Says:

And for some strange reason, most of the fans here want to bring back the coach who was instrumental in that move.

  25. Eric Says:

Because the team was so much more accomplished while he was here vs. the last 8 years of total disaster.

    That’s why.

Bring the “con man” with the “slick one liners” please.
