Impressive “Retread”
December 8th, 2017
“Rex, have you seen my pass-rush talent?”
The buzz for Mike Smith possibly becoming the next New York Giants head coach won’t subside.
NJ.com Giants beat writer James Kratch kept the chains moving on that front when he compared Smith to Tom Coughlin, the Giants’ two-time Super Bowl-winning coach.
Kratch had Smith in a list of likely Giants targets for their vacancy.
Mike Smith:
When the Falcons fired Mike Smith after the 2014 season, he left Atlanta with a 66-46 career record, and was coming off back-to-back losing seasons.
When the Jaguars fired Tom Coughlin after the 2002 season, he departed Jacksonville with a 68-60 record, and had posted three straight losing seasons.
That’s not to say Smith is Coughlin. Coughlin had significantly more playoff success than Smith, although both men fell short of a Super Bowl in the end. But Smith, if a candidate again, would come with a pretty impressive resume for a retread hire.
As Joe has referenced, any team considering Smith knows he took over a complete post-Michael-Vick mess in Atlanta and thrived as a no-name rookie head coach — with a rookie QB. He’s won NFL Coach of the Year (the official award), and he won the award three times from Sporting News. He’s also a guy who chose to be a CEO-style head coach, which is the mold of many previous Giants head coaches. He’s also a smooth talker who easily could handle the New York media.
Will Team Glazer let Smith out of his unique defensive coordinator contract so he can at least interview for the Giants gig? Legions of Bucs fans have their fingers and toes crossed.

“Ok, Ok with the exception of those two little incidents where the house actually did catch fire and burn completely to the ground I am a really good fire prevention expert”…… Sheesh the NFL is the only place where you can completey suck at your job and get another one with even more prestige and higher pay!

Completely agree with you Buc believer. Funny as hell but so true.

Like M Smith but him going to the Gaints might be good for the Bucs. Maybe we can bring in a new D.C. And hopefully improve this defense. We have to admit that this defense has struggle and regress over the past year. As much as some of Jamis mistakes have costed the team a game we have the same amount of issue where we could have won but the defense let a team go 70 to 80 yards down the field and score. Take a look at Sunday game against Green Bay

That is because legions of “so called” Buc fans love to self destruct!!!!!! And Joe want tell the other side because he has fingered Coach Smitty as the “Bad Guy” !!!! That once he is gone all will be right with the Bucs!!!!!!!!!
Some need to remember what this defense looked like when it had an average DE and a rookie DE playing well last year!!!!! Not dominating!!!!! Just adequate!!!!!!!!!! And Some how it played as one of the better defenses in the league!!!!!! I am worried that the sheep are going to get their way before we can acquire “real” talent at Defensive End and what this defense should be!!!!!!! Coach Smitty covers a lot of holes but the injuries and lack of talent were a little too much this year!!!!!! Hopefully the GM corrects this egregious error!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope coach smith stays.
I think the reason we’re seeing this defense on the field is he simply doesn’t have enough talent to play his scheme of football……it’s like asking the Chef to prepare a gourmet meal and not have all of his necessary ingredients……..you just can’t do it.
Good on Mike Smith for being the classy guy he is.

He is a better hc than d coordinator thats for sure. We got it wrong. Im sure we would be doing much better with smith as hc and dirk as oc. I wish smith well if he gets the job. I definitely dont want him here running the defense. This team is unprepared and outcoached every week.

Mike Smith seems to be a great person, however, he is the leader of the defense and allows his corners the freedom to play 15 yards off the line even in 3rd and 2. He is the guy that refuses to blitz and when he does, he allows his corners to play 15 yards off the line so the hot read is wide open with plenty of room to keep the chains moving. This year was full of promise and both sides of the ball have been utter disasters. Mike Smith is under contract, I would take an 8th rounder for him in a heart beat : )

@Realist, this isn’t the most talented defense in the league and it damn sure isn’t the least, so that being said we shouldn’t be rank last. That to me is coaching.

If I’m hiring a head coach, a guy who except for five games ran the worst defense in the NFL would be right at the top of my list.

Whether dirk stays or not I doubt they care because it’ll give them a chance to make over this coaching staff, another thing we can’t leave in the hands of dirk. Having points blocked unable to ever make in game adjustments something even Raheem Morris could do

I have a couple of trailers he can borrow to move

Lets be for real here. The Giants are losers But they cannot be that Dumb to select PressBox Smitty as their HC. I refuse to beleive this. I got nothin aganist Smitty. But his time has come and gone. He either needs to go on to nice little Division 2 college team or join Jimmy Johnson marlin fishin in Miami.

The Buc Realist Says
“I am worried that the sheep are going to get their way before we can acquire “real” talent at Defensive End and what this defense should be!”
I think that is a valid concern…and I feel the same way.
However, I actually don’t care if we lose Smith…if we have to let him go to give Koetter another year, I’m fine with that.
Also, a thought came to me a few minutes ago…back in Hard Knocks, Gruden was not the only head coach candidate hanging around. Ryan was here too.
I wonder if he might be eyed for the DC position if Mike goes?
I’m not saying I am in favor of it, just that its an angle I have not seen covered yet.
