GMC Is A Leader

December 27th, 2017

Should be no more doubt.

This has to be one of the biggest disconnects between NFL players and coaches and Bucs fans since the PFF tribe was unleashed upon society.

A good number of Bucs fans absolutely despise Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. Can’t wait to buy shots at the bar the day GMC retires.

Joe has never understood this. Never understood the hatred. And in all but two seasons since the Bucs drafted him, the Bucs have been in no position to run off good players (Michael Bennett, anyone?)

Joe offers quotes from opposing NFL coaches about how good GMC is and it does no good. The stats are there for anyone to see McCoy’s been one of the best defensive tackles of his era, and fans ignore it.

For some bizarre reason, fans hate him because he isn’t wild like Warren Sapp or a dirty player like Ndamukong Suh.

Joe asks NFL offensive coordinators at the NFL combine each winter what he is missing that fans are seeing in GMC that make them want to burn anything associated with Oklahoma. The coaches respond by looking the same way a puppy looks at folks with a tilted head. They can’t believe anyone would be so misguided to hate GMC.

One complaint the haters have is that GMC is not a leader. Now Joe falls into the Jack Ham category. The Hall of Fame linebacker with four rings once was asked about leaders and he waved the subject off and scoffed that such talk was just “rhetoric.” Understandable.

But here we have GMC, a six-time Pro Bowler, who didn’t practice all week with an arm injury that would end the season for most players. He didn’t practice all week but he gutted it out against Carolina and was a force.

On top of that, on the crucial offside penalty by Swaggy Baker, which all but handed the Bucs a loss, Swaggy allegedly yelled for the line to watch Newton and GMC corrected him yelling that the linemen should watch the ball and don’t jump.

And guess what happened?

If anything, GMC demonstrated for even the blind to see on Sunday he’s a leader.

Heaven forbid we have a class act on the team who can actually play. I can’t understand how anyone could dislike him after Hard Knocks. Seems like a great person to me. And for the morons who still find a reason to dislike him… well, what would you expect from morons?

  2. D-Rome Says:

Of course he’s a leader! I don’t understand why Bucs fans and a certain local podcaster continually bashes McCoy but they are wrong about him. He’s a 6x pro bowler and future HoFer. His name will be in the Ring of Honor one day.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Ironically, That offsides, might have secured the best DE that GMC93 has ever played with!!!! Because the Bucs need a good D-line to make GMC better as the other way does not work!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe if they had worked on focus and game situations, instead of dancing in front of reality TV camera’s all offseason and training camp, that this would not have happened!!!!!!! The best “leaders” put people in positions to win, and the Glazers did not do that this year!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Cue the same lame agenda-driven responses from the football experts of JBF.

  5. Bird Says:

    Gmc is not the problem

When he gets doubled almost every play , it’s the other 3 that can’t beat their man one on one.

  6. Bird Says:

    Sapp got doubled

And Simeon beat his man time after time.

  7. IsrBuc Says:

Is he a leader because others don’t pay attention to what he says?

  8. D-Rome Says:

The best “leaders” put people in positions to win, and the Glazers did not do that this year!!!!!!!!!!

Umm, the Glazers hired people to make those decisions. You know, those same people you are “Totally Confident” with.

Derrick Brooks has said it many times that if the Buccaneers want to keep you they’ll find a way. The organizational decision to keep Gerald McCoy is one of the few things that have gone right over the past ten years.

  9. Bird Says:

It’s the double standard on this site.

Gmc gets doubled and doesn’t put up numbers like a defensive end (even though he is DT). He is called soft and the ice cream man or the cancer.

Jameis craps the bed and turns ball over and struggles with deep ball and is just inaccurate and everyone but Jameis gets blamed. (Mainly koetter)

    It’s a joke

  10. Bucs Brand Says:

People dont like GMC because his demeanor is too nice. Everybody thinks you have to be an A hole to be a good D lineman because Warren Sapp was…and because Ian Beckles went around whispering GMC was a P*$$y for years on the radio. GMC is a class act but most people want more animal. They want GMC to start grabbing teammates facemasks and running Swggy Baker out of town to the media. Sorry fans thats not GMC

  11. tmaxcon Says:

Blah blah blah. Gmc is a career loser who has never won a meaningful game in his entire career… the bucs will never win a meaningful game with a selfish me first hypocrite loser wearing the C… gmc is THE FACE OF THE BASEMENT YEARS… Results prove it… team needs driven winners not soft fragile dirtbags like cancer93

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

It is said that Baker had a smirk on his face in the locker room, after he was warned by GMC to watch the ball. Baker cost us that game, IMHO.
I have always said, give GMC a Joey Bosa type teammate, and look out.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

Gmc has been celebrating losses for years and like everything else he gets a free pass for that too… remember jameis callignout captain blowout…. of course you dont cancer93 is king of the free pass

  14. Buc believer Says:

he Joe goes again being batmans agent. sorry Joe you cant remove the smell from the skunk.

  15. Reach87 Says:

Tmax you’re a moron. For ages you said he sucked, a few weeks ago you claimed that you always said he was a very good DT just a poor leader, now you are back on your namecalling…and you are such a moron you think no one will notice. You are a moron with no (zero) football knowledge, no understanding of leadership, and no concept of teamwork. Added to that…your a moron for continuing to spout your personal drivel. Sad.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

In a post yesterday, someone alluded to the hypocrisy of calling out Jameis for his fumbling but turning a blind eye to GMC’s inability to “change a game”. I did not respond to this yesterday, but it got me thinking. Only in Tampa Bay would fans expect a DT to win or lose games! Forget the fact that he never handles the ball and rarely calls a play.
GMC certainly has some weaknesses, but the running diatribe is really out of hand. Being on losing teams his entire career somehow makes him responsible? So can we make the same assumption for our QB, especially since he REALLY can effect a game?! See, that’s the hypocrisy of fans.
Somehow I knew this would be brought up and opined upon. Of course he won’t get any credit from the detractors. This, despite playing injured (soft?!) and actually making a play or two then trying to lead his teammates.
GMC is not perfect but I have ALWAYS maintained that we are a better football team with him than without him.
“Free pass”?! There are no free passes when you are 4-11. Speaking of free passes, what of the other 10 players on that football field for that final drive? No pressure, bad coverage, untimely penalties, and poor tackling but lets blame ONE guy. Kind of like blaming Jameis for fumbling, right?!

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    Reach87

RESULTS MATTER… HE is the undisputed FACE OF THE BASEMENT YEARS for one of the most embarrassing franchises in NFL History… Good Player cancerous teammate who cares more about meaningless personal accolades than team wins.

  18. tmaxcon Says:

Nobody supports are career loser like low standard buc fan

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Tmax is the biggest joke on this site. Nobody takes him seriously. He just loves the attention that he obviously doesn’t get from Mrs. Tmax.

  20. FortMyersDave Says:

Didn’t Baker also have a “roughing the passing flag that got the Jets within 5 points of the Bucs? Seems to me like Baker should be given a Vegas Inquiry? Guy goes out of his way to make sure the Bucs lose. Yet this guy TMax and his alteregos who post anti-GMC garbage on every JBF thread only seem to parrot the same take over and over again. Seems like this is not the voice of a Buc fan but of someone with simply a personal agenda. Of course a lot of the negativity on JBF is simply from trolls and not constructive criticism of true fans and this dates back to when the Bucs beat the Giants to go 2-1, there were actually “fans” who seemed unhappy with the win….. Anyhow GMC is not the problem, many more issues on offense, special teams, the D, coaching and the scouting of free agents/ draft evaluation that pushed the Bucs to 4-12…..

  21. Rodney Says:

All u GMC haters plz STFU 🤐 PERMANENTLY U HAVE NO CLUE HOW FOOTBALL WORKS

  22. tmaxcon Says:

crybabies got your panties in a bunch because you superheor sucks… awwww so adorable… maybe try supporting a driven winner instead of a crying clown

  23. tmaxcon Says:

the only undisputed fact about the gmc’s entire career his the soft frageil cry baby has NEVER WON a meaningful game NOT ONE… that can not be denied. 8 years of smiles and failures by your captain. captain blowout.

  24. Lamarcus Says:

    Gmc is TRASH.

  25. tmaxcon Says:

even the members of the special olympics think gmc is soft and overrated. they definitely have more heart than the crying clown.

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

Lamarcus and tmax- If GMC is “trash”, the rest of the d-line is the liquid that leaks out from the trash. In the business, we call it leachate and it is straight up NASTY!

WTF!!!!…..practicing and focusing on game situations falls on the coaching shoulders……putting your players in position to win falls on the coaches shoulders…..you cant blame ownership for game situations and players not being in position to be successful….GTFOH!!!!

doesn’t dirk have a house to pack?….get back to work!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  28. Lamarcus Says:

    Bucsfan

That dline or rest have no respect for gmc. Bark a simple call and they don’t listen why the defense ranked 32 🤔🤔🤔

  29. tmaxcon Says:

let’s not forget GMC has more offside penalties than any other dt in league over the last 8 years so why should baker jump to attention when captain cry baby give any orders.

gmc is no leader and barely a man…. just a me first cry baby that has never won anything

  30. Not there yet Says:

That just says he knows situational football to state the obvious not that he’s a leader because saggy baker jumped off sides anyway. Last time i heard it was the kid Winston who confronted baker not mccoy because he’s to timid to get in anyone’s face

  31. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Such a leader that his star wars buddy ignored his order… he is a fake leader forced into a roll, he would be better off as the booger on this team it just is sad in 8 years the bucs have not drafted or let real alpha dogs leave the team

  32. rriddler Says:

Joe, I love how you rile up the losers on this site.

  33. doolnutts Says:

I don’t understand the GMC hate… Is he Warren Sapp… No. But so what? He is an outstanding NFL DT and will still go down as one of our all-time greats. On top of his play he seems to be a total class act as well.

  34. Jeagan1999 Says:

If I could get a first round choice for him, I’d make the trade. GMC is a very good player, but the Bucs need to rebuild along both lines and an extra #1 would help a lot. There are other decent young DT’s that can be had, but we need DE’s now in the worst way. Ayers is way past his prime…and needs to be replaced….and we have no other startling caliber pass rushers, save Noah Spence who has been injury prone! Get Key or Chubb in round 1, the best OT later in the round and come back with the best remaining pass rusher in round 2.

  35. Hodad Says:

I’d like McCoy more if he recovers Cam’s fumble instead of letting Cam pick it up, and run right through his gap. Seriously, we’ve had the lead late in five games this year, where was GMC to step up? Get a sack, make a tackle behind the line of scrimmage when it counts, where’s he been? Green Bay game, Carolina, great players make a play, McCoy never does. Nice guy, great human being, not a difference maker, never has been, never will be.

  36. Steven007 Says:

Trollmax! I haven’t responded to you in a while because I’m typically of the school that I don’t want to lend any oxygen of respectability to your mindless repetitive drivel. Hmm, have we seen this movie before: “mentally weak”/”leader of the losing culture”/”weak minded”/”cancer93″/”raise your standards”/
“basement years”/”career loser”. SO original! Rinse, repeat. Anyway, I’ll follow up with something you might actually learn from.

  37. Clodhopper Says:

Toughing it out does not make a leader. Plenty of rank and file folks tough it out all day every day. Doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be recognized for it tho. It’s a manly quality but not a leadership quality.

And telling Baker not to jump offsides is a nice show of leadership. So now we’re how many years of GMCs “leadership” and if we count how many times he’s shown good leadership skills, it wouldn’t fill up a single hand. Not even a thumbless farmer’s hand!!

He’s a good laborer but not a good foreman.

  38. Steven007 Says:

Ah, GMC, the favorite hobby horse for certified JBF trolls. Here’s where I can agree about GMC. He’s certainly not Sapp. And would it be nice if he was meaner? Sure. But he isn’t. Just like Selmon wasn’t. I’m comparing demeanors not careers. But as I’ve said before as have savvy posters, if GMC is occupying more than one blocker (often, sometimes more) why isn’t the criticism directed at the other 75% of the D-line that is obviously not taking advantage of that (LB’s too)? And then it just gets silly. Career loser? Only in the pros where he had the bad luck to be drafted by an awful Bucs squad that had their fluke 2010 season and then mired through the rest of Rah’s horrific tenure before the Schiano and then Lovie years. Hardly the DT’s fault. He’s no less a career loser than Aaron Donald and JJ Watt, both of whom have had legitimate coaches their entire career. Locker room cancer? There’s exactly zero evidence of that. To the contrary actually. But he makes x millions of dollars! Um, are any of us really criticizing someone from legally profiting from their talents? It’s not my money and it’s not yours. Don’t be jealous because he makes more in one game than you do for the entire year. And it’s not handicapping the cap in any way (we could have easily signed Campbell instead of Fatty McBaker). And he hasn’t been the face of the franchise for 3 years running. Nor the leader of the defense since Kwon. And newsflash, Kwon missed more games his rookie year (due to bad decisions) than GMC and has been injured much of this season. So let’s review some of the talented DE’s GMC has played with. Anyone remember Tim Crowder? Stylez White? How about Bowers and Clayborn? And who can forget the legendary Daniel Te’o-Nesheim (here for 3 years!)? Then came Larry English and Ghost Johnson, with a sprinkling of Jack Smith. The only real player among those was Michael Bennett the first few years (split between DE and DT) who developed his chops here, proved he was a player, and then inexplicably was let go to sign with the Hawks for a song. With all of that “help” no wonder he’s constantly doubled and occasionally tripled. Which brings us back to, if he’s occupying those guys, and he is (that’s, like, his job), where is the cavalry? If Spence is going to be a DE he needs to beef up to 265 and develop a bull rush with added strength, not to mention stay healthy. If not move him to OLB and rush him from that spot, or wide on 4/3 looks.

  39. Clodhopper Says:

So he told Baker not to jump offsides. What did he do when Baker DID jump offsides? He said “Whatever” That’s some top notch leadership!! He (according to reports) let the real leaders handle it: Jameis and Kwon

  40. Bucsfanman Says:

C’mon Clod, you took that out of context. He didn’t say “whatever” to Baker, he said that to the reporter who was fishing for more. Nice try!
Lot of “dislike” for a guy who is our entire defensive line.

007- Don’t try to stir the pot with facts! It’s been tried before.

  41. Clodhopper Says:

    Bucsfanman

That’s my point. Then what did he say or do to Baker? Anything? Besides talking passively aggressively about him to the media?

As far as we know he did nothing

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

Man, I don’t know. What I do know is that there are some expectations that were put upon this guy that he has never been or will be; a leader. While I would love to hear about a GMC/Baker melee, I know that it’s not his wheel-house.
I think we saw a while ago the real leaders emerge. I’m resigned to that, what choice is there?
I only defend GMC because he’s the only talented d-lineman we have and is the only one who produces regularly.

Might just be he is not getting any attention from Mr. Tmax……Just sayin, I don’t judge. But that could be the case here, again, just sayin

  44. Clodhopper Says:

    Bucsfanman

Yes. He was thrust into the leadership position when he wasn’t ready or able to do it. And I feel bad for him in that regard. He didn’t ask for it, it was forced upon him.

But now we have real leadership. From Jameis to Kwon to even Ayers in his own way. It’s time for GMC to gracefully step aside and/or the guys quit voting to put a C on his chest.

Like I said, He’s a good laborer but not a good foreman.

There’s NOTHING wrong with not being a good leader. If everyone was good at it, the position of leadership wouldn’t be needed. Very few people are actually good leaders.

  45. unbelievable Says:

c’mon man, you know facts don’t belong in the conversation with most around these parts…

Not true! See if he would have stepped up and made a play to keep Carolina out of the end zone on 4&1 with 30 seconds left in the game then Tmax and I would look like complete morons but we don’t cuz your boy is straight TRASH!!!! Give me K. Short all day over this dude.

He’s got no heart and that’s what we/I hate.

  49. DB55 Says:

Funny how McDonald and baker had no problem stopping the run on the goal line. But wtfdik

  50. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ DB
Why was it 4th and one? Baker!!!!!!! So you’re telling me Baker has heart? BS
Nobody knows where the broken play that Cam made was supposed to go.The fumble threw everybody off.
Since McCoy has been playing against DT against the best the NFL for years,
its clear you need to recalibrate your heart measuring tool.,Bro Its all effed up if its getting a reading from Baker!!!!
