Pining for the wrong Gruden?

No, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter has no desire to turn the page on the 2017 Bucs season.

Most of America already has.

In looking at their crystal balls, the creator, curator and overall guru of ProFootballTalk, the great Mike Florio, and his TV Robin, former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms, saw which teams who missed this season’s playoffs can turn into playoff teams next year.

Both Florio and Simms were bullish on the Bucs in a recent episode of “Pro Football Talk Live,” which fans can enjoy weekdays on the NBC Sports Network.

Simms suggested there is plenty of expensive dead weight on the team that can be unloaded, and those funds could shore up areas of need with new blood.

“I’ve got to imagine [Team Glazer] will spend money in the offseason because they have a lot of holes on their roster,” Simms said.

Florio suggested too many folks lapped up the hype of the Bucs and pushed them too soon. Like Simms, Florio believes there are sufficient pieces already in place to turn the team around quickly.

Also, Florio had this suggestion for the Bucs fans who are beating the drum for the return of Chucky: You may have the wrong Gruden.

The Bucs chatter begins at the 8:15 mark in the NBC Sports Network video below.

  2. zzbucs Says:

I am with you bucsanthem……..NO GRUDEN!!!!

  3. Eric Says:

Should get both Grudens like we had before, in such better days……..

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

    Duce Gruden next Bucs coach???

  5. Jason Says:

Jon is the only Gruden worth going after. No disrespect to Jay but he has proven his ceiling is being a coordinator.

  6. Eric Says:

    Exactly Jon HC Jay OC.

    Make the bucs great again.

  7. Buddy Says:

You stupid Goobers, if you want to continue with Koetter & Licht. Those of you who do, then you deserve to continue to lose. They BOTH have done nothing to prove they are worthy of their current titles. They had their shot and simply have not delivered. I agreed with both getting a chance but it’s evident neither could handle the job. Gruden is the ONLY person who Team Glazers can hire to put energy & interest back into this franchise. Anyone else including Jay (who is a family friend) won’t bring the interest that Jon will. Team Glazer is about butts in the seats and merchandise selling off the racks. No Gruden=No Sales. Simple as that. Go get a Harbaugh, or McDaniels, or Patricia, or somebody else. Let’s see how that works out. Laughable if they do

  8. 813bucboi Says:

jay gruden would be an upgrade over dirk….i’ll take him….GO BUCS!!!!

  9. JonBuc Says:

I’m with you Eric…with Duece Gruden as Saggy Baker’s personal trainer…although Saggy is likely out the door with Martin, Sweezy, Smiley Smith and The Turk is coming for The Dirk.

  10. Mort Says:

Jon as HC, Jay as OC, deuce as assistant strength and conditioning.

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ve been a Buc Fan for eons. Starting with the original team way back in the 70’s. I don’t think ownership overall has made good decisions. And I’m not just talkin bout the Glazers. The 1st big mistake was made back when they refused to pay Doug Williams as a QB. And initially throughout was very stingy in spending. We have fired 2 decent coaches in the past who many teams would have stuck with and Koetter nor Smitty can hold a candle next to either. Those 2 were Dungy and Gruden. Now you guys say keep Koetter. I do know Koetter is flawed in his decison making and game Mngt. And his DC’s time has come and gone in this NFL. I just have no faith in this franchise. We are..SNAKEBIT!!!!

  12. Pa Privateer Says:

I would like to see what another year would look like under this front office.

Keep Licht, and Keotter, fire Smith, promote Hayes to DC.

    Get Ziggy Ansah

Draft DE, DT, CB, OC, OT….solidify the lines

  13. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    4-12 klueless has proven nothing

    Gruden is a superbowl winner

    Who do you pick?

    Its not that hard

“But what happens if we stink after we win a superbowl”

    the buc sheep

  14. '79Defense Says:

I really like Koetter and would feel bad for him if he wasn’t given a chance to have a third year. With that said, as a fan since year one it’s great that Gruden is also a Bucs fan and understands and appreciates their history. I loved how the first thing he did the other night in his speech was to thank the fans. We’ve suffered with this team a lot over the years (understatement). Gruden brings a unique passion and energy to the game– and a love for the Bucs along with it. It would be interesting to see how he would do with another shot. I’d be excited to see it.

  15. G-Money Says:

Great post Mike Johnson, I agree with a lot of what you said about the two coaches the Glazers let go; but I want to repeat one of my earlier post, that the best continuity to bucs ever had was with Dungy, Rich McKay and Monte! period!and they chose to dismantle that and bring in Gruden who wins a SB, but everything once again started going left and they (Glazers) bail out again and started the poor hiring that has now lingered to the point that fans want Gruden back??? Wow

  16. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Eric says:

    Exactly Jon HC Jay OC.

    Make the bucs great again.

That’s the new motto, forget “Seige the Day” Make the Bucs Great Again!

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

Wow LUV. I didn’t realize how much money we were paying some of these guys!
I have to disagree with Conte though. The dude’s a bargain comparatively speaking, and with Ward gone, we need depth.
I could live with everything else.

  27. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Rarely do you get a chance to correct a mistake like the firing of Gruden. (Look at the results since…). Hire him TODAY!

  28. DB55 Says:

Y’all are wrong about Baker. I keep telling you.

With Jason Gump at the helm I see us paying millions for a Long snapper, punter, 2 kickers, any washed up, used up recycled player that formerly played for Atlanta. #FIRELICHT #MBGA

  30. webster Says:

    @ nate

Yea the bucs only scored 20 but if barber does not fumble at the 5, you could add 7. There are plenty of examples like that. Howard fumbling at the 5 against detroit…add 7. Martin fumbling right before the half which led to his benching in the 2nd half, add 3. Those are all recent but it has happened all year. You cant blame the coach and qb for everything.

And to all you hire gruden posters…..STOP IT. You break up with your girlfriend for a reason. How many times has it worked out when you got back with her? It hasnt. It got worse. I was not in the fire gruden camp like many of you were but he was FIRED!!!! You guys sound like crack addicts. Understand, crack addicts are addicts because they are chasing that 1st high they got but it will never feel that way again. That high will never be match but the chase it anyway. We won the super bowl in the first year with gruden and it was never the same after that. Going back to him now equates to you guys being crack addicts chasing that 1st high. STOP IT!!!!

  31. NFLNut Says:

    Sign at least one of:

DeMarcus Lawrence, Ziggy Ansah, Sheldon Richardson

    AND

    Trumaine Johnson, Malcolm Butler

AND DRAFT a: DE, CB, RB, DT, SS, OT, OG

  32. NFLNut Says:

What I would d love to see is one of the following:

Bucs trade their #1 to Cardinals for Patrick Peterson, their #1 to select Derwin Jameis and their #2 to select the best DE available

    or

Bucs trade their #1 to the Jets for Jamal Adams, their #1 to select the best DE available, and their #2 to select the best corner available

Both those options would really shore up our pathetic pass defense imho
