Marvez, Hawk Say Koetter Deserves To Return

December 29th, 2017

A.J. Hawk tackled Doug Martin, and now he’s talking Bucs.

Yes, despite all the hot-seat talk and Chucky-salivating going on across the Tampa Bay area, Dirk Koetter has supporters locally and across the nation.

Two of them were co-hosting on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week.

Alex Marvez, formerly of FOXSports.com, has been critical of Koetter in the past during his weekly segments on the popular Outkick The Coverage show on FOX. But Marvez had strong advice for Team Glazer on NFL Radio.

“It has been a trying time,” Marvez said. “I just, I’ll tell you this. You know, two years to be a head coach, when you continue to see your young quarterback Jameis Winston improve the way that he has under some trying circumstances … I think Dirk Koetter deserves a chance to come back as Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, but I’m not part of the Glazer family that makes that decision.”

Co-host and former Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk agreed and said he’s impressed by how Koetter has handled the close to this season.

Of course, there’s more to being a head coach than working well with a franchise quarterback, but Koetter appears to have that huge positive in his corner. Another strong performance by Jameis on Sunday, against an excellent team, could impact Team Glazer — if there’s even still a head coaching decision to make.

“when you continue to see your young quarterback Jameis Winston improve..”
Hasn’t improved enough and some would say he regressed. I’m of the camp that believes Jameis’ successes (the few that their are) are in spite of Coach K, not because of him. Sucks to say it but…

  2. 813bucboi Says:

obviously they haven’t watch every bucs game….if they did, they’ll see we have an incompetent coach running the show!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

Bring Koetter back. But..we are only delaying the inevitable. I don’t see Koetter getting us there. He should have never been hired in the 1st place. Then to add insult, he threw in his ageless wonder, fired from the Falcons..Pressbox Smitty.
If we do bring Koetter back, please let it be under the condition that his DC pack bags. Our Defense needs a coach with some fire. Not these, Walking Dead clowns we have now.

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

The only way I’d keep Koetter is if Gruden turns down the job. I hope the new DC will seriously look at running a 3-4 defense because I believe it will be more productive against the NFC South

  7. Lamarcus Says:

    Koetter > Gruden

Again I don’t want to see JW w 3 HC before age 24. That should be a record.

    Gmc will have 5 HC

  8. Pete I Says:

“you continue to see your young quarterback Jameis Winston improve the way that he has under some trying circumstances” Hmmm hard to know how to take this “take” I’m beginning to wonder if winston will ever improve. Another strong performance would be how many turnovers for Winston?

  9. tmaxcon Says:

gruden will use bucs to get a better deal at a real franchise that is committed to winning. Nobody, players, coaches or front office people find tampa an attractive destination just look at all the free agent snubs over the years. bucs will continue to hire left overs and has beens and remain permanently in the basement and the glazers are just fine with that.

  10. Buccaneer Bill Says:

Seeing the story on Rhonde’s HOF opportunity, reminds me that the Buc HOFers all share a long time defensive coordinator who was with the team through tough times.

Keeping Kiffen was the best decision Gruden made when hired. Continuity is critical to a team’s success. Churning through coaches every two years is a sugary substitute for hard work, and a recipe for continued failure. As Meatloaf once sang, “…there ain’t no Coupe de Ville hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box”.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

if gruden turns us down ask harbaugh….
if harbaugh turns us down ask ariers…..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Fanalyzer34 Says:

Clamoring for a 3-4 Defense when your three best defensive players don’t fit that scheme is insane. The problem isn’t the alignment. The problem is a lack of personnel. Mike Smith wanted bigger defensive linemen – so the Bucs overpay to keep Gholdston (who should move inside to DT next season) and Swaggy Baker (who may be gone next season). Noah Spence and J Smith were supposed to provide speed off the edge but couldn’t because you can’t help the club in the tub.

Outside of Grimes and Justin Evans, Secondary play has been inconsistent at best. VHIII has been a disappointment except when he’s played primarily as a slot corner.

Looking at the playoff teams, only two (Pitt and LA) use a base 3-4 primarily. The remaining teams use a 4-3. But the vast majority of teams are able to give hybrid looks depending on the situation at the time.

a big part of this seasons record and the D’s frustrating 4th quarter wearing down and out

None of those guys would be caught dead in tampa working for glazers. None of them. Being hopefil is admirable but thinking coaches who can have any job they want would accept a job with the woirst

  15. tmaxcon Says:

Ran franchise in nfl is delusional

  16. Cobraboy Says:

This season has turned into a circus complete with a clown car.

Not making significant changes will cost the Glazers many millions and cause apathy in Tampa Bay.

  17. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

AJ Hawk is impressed with a five game losing streak. #juicespeak

  18. mark2001 Says:

Hawk…you are joking, aren’t you? The Packers biggest waste of a first round draft pick and the big money in the last twenty years. Did you see him take the Wilson QB fake and give up the play that cost the Packers a shot at the big one? Packer fans will never forget.

  19. Fanalyzer34 Says:

    Altered Ego,

Exactly. Lack of personnel and personnel decisions (particularly free agency and keeping our homegrown players) have to be scrutinized far more.

Ariers? I trust you mean Bruce Arians. And anyone who tries to somehow link Bruce Arians to any team other than the Cardinals has a deeply flawed thinking process. Of course, since I’ve read a few of your posts, I already knew this.

  21. J Dubb Says:

I have mixed feelings, i dont mind koetter, but would he get rid of mike smith is the question I have. If they are a pair, then i want gruden and either rex ryan or john fox as d coordinator presuming he gets canned….If Koetter can make the decision to send Smith packing, then I say give em a chance.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    @gobuc

we’ll see…..people said the same thing when I claim dirk was in over his head….that wasn’t flawed thinking now was it?…..GO BUCS!!!!

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Guys…it’s not black and white!!!!

#3 has clearly made progress with his accuracy issues. IMHO he’s also improved in his decision making and this year I finally saw him throw balls away when the play wasn’t there.

He still has no feel for his backside…or blindside…I don’t know if that’s magic NFL QB stopwatch in his head…or just an innate feel great QB’s have…but most of #3’s worst fumbles and turnovers come when he’s trying to keep a play alive apparently unaware of the pressure behind him. He gets blindsided a LOT.

Now some here will place it all on our OL and his LT but a big part is that #3 HOLDS onto the ball forever!!! But he’s improving.

And so I think he is improving with work left to do. I believe he and Koetter are making progress together.

It only makes sense…one more year…if Koetter doesn’t cut it…there is Chucky waiting in the wings with his final boy off to college. Nothing left at home to tie him down.

  24. Skyline Crew Says:

I don’t mind keeping Koetter, but if Chucky comes in to the building and tells the Glazers that he wants to coach, you can’t say no to that.

how do you know chucky wont take a job this year?…..and how do you think dirk will preform if he’s looking over his should?…..he’ll fold like paper if he had to go a entire year worrying about gruden…..GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

JW3 has significantly improved as a passer. Higher completion %, higher YPA, Higher YPG, More TDs, Less INTs.

But he definitely developed a nasty fumbling habit.

Last offseason, he remained consistently focused on improving his accuracy and decision making. It workeed

Knowing Jamo, hes going to be focusing all offseason on pocket presence and holding onto the ball.

This issue will be resolved, count on it.

  27. Reach87 Says:

Jolly, good observation. I think you’re spot on. It’s process and we have a guy who is committed. Go Bucs!

  28. Maze Says:

    Hawk? Haha

  29. Maze Says:

The only thing Dirk has going for him is he’s twice the football coach than his predecessor but obviously that Isn’t saying much

  30. Stevbobucsfan Says:

I admit that I do like Koetter but I haven’t seen enough fire from him on the sideline when the refs make a bad call, when a player screws up ( get in their face) and so on and so on but if he stays I am ok with that because I am pretty sure if Koetter does stay there are gonna be some major changes. Sometimes to build a winner you have to take that one last chance. I remember B Parcell was on the verge of being fired when he was with the Gaints but they gave him that last chance and we all know what happened afterward. B Bilichik was fired by Cleveland when they were the original Browns now one of the best HC to ever walk the sideline so I would be all in if Koetter says although I would like to see something different

Don’t let optics con you. Raheem and Schiano often were in refs’ faces. Raheem got flagged a couple of times for freaking out. Lovie himself went off on Akeem Spence on the sidelines.

The Hall of Fame is full of coaches who were cigar store Indians on the sideline: Paul Brown, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, Father Dungy.

Just because a coach acts like Yosemite Sam on the sidelines doesn’t mean he’s worth a damn.

    Substance > style.

  32. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Jolly Bucs Fan

He still has to work on his accuracy. His QBR is down (granted he has missed 4 games) and he was missing wide open players short and long. We saw that early in the season and it was a pain point for our team.

  33. Pickgrin Says:

^^^ In a hard knocks episode JW said he wanted Koetter to get in his face more, that he plays better when he’s getting heat. Great coaches coach a different style for each player based on their needs. IN SPITE of Koetter Jameis has turned himself into a pro. Koetter sealed his fate by not canning Smith or stepping up on the defensive side to fix that issue. That’s what head coaches are supposed to do, not sit around only thinking about offense. Head coach is responsible for the ENTIRE team and that’s where Koetter failed and finally sealed his fate IMO. Glazers I’m sure are wondering why the defense wasn’t addressed more during the season. Honestly after the Bills game Koetter mailed it in.

  36. not there yet Says:

Mind your business hawk you don’t know enough about this team, can’t watch a couple games and think your opinion means anything

  37. pick6 Says:

@skyline, given how he played before (most of 2016, first game of this year) and “after” (last 2 games) the purported injury, i think the notion that the shoulder issue affected his accuracy and touch has tremendous merit. Despite his reputation, Jameis is no stranger to putting very clean 4 or 5 game stretches together and it looks like he is doing it again to close the season

  38. JonBuc Says:

Put Hawk down as yet another CTE victim…

  39. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Pickgrin,

Where did you see that? ESPN has it as:

    2015: 61.1
    2016: 59.7
    2017: 48.8

  40. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Pickgrin

NVM, I see you were using Rating vs. QBR

  41. Stevbobucsfan Says:

Good point joe. Just want to see the bucs start playing in January GO BUCS

  42. NFLNut Says:

Pickgrin and Skyline … passer rating is the only stat that is a “season stat” … QBR is really a “game stat” and should never be used as a season stat as it doesn’t weight games … if a QB throws 1 pass for a TD, then gets knocked out and doesn’t play the rest of the game, he will have a perfect 100 QBR for that game … if in the next game he goes 15-50 for 99 yards with no TDs and 6 picks, he’ll have a 0 QBR … and his “season QBR” will be 50 (100+0 divided by 2 = 50).

Now, if another QB has back to back games where he goes 25-40 for 300 yards, 3 TDs and 2 picks and gets a 49 QBR in each game his “season QBR” will be 49.

That is STUPID as obviously the latter QB is having the better year and the first QB’s “season QBR” is skewed …

Anyways, Jameis’ passer rating has gone up each year and is WAY UP this year … the QBR doesn’t mean much as it’s not a legit “season stat”.
