Ryan Smith A Scapegoat

November 26th, 2017

No-win situation.

Joe knows Bucs fans are crucifying starting cornerback Ryan Smith right about now. It’s actually unfair.

Smith had played well the past couple of games, not bad for a guy who never started an NFL game before and was monkeyed around with, moving from corner to safety and back to corner in his less than two NFL seasons. He wasn’t expected to start coming out of training camp.

Today, Smith was charged with stopping Julio Jones. Hell, Brent Grimes would have trouble with Julio Jones. \

Jalen Ramsey would have trouble with Julio Jones. Richard Sherman would have trouble with Julio Jones.

And the Bucs expected a guy making his sixth start in the NFL to contain or stop Jones? Give Joe a friggin’ break.

No, give Smith a break.

Joe understands how fans want to run Smith out of town about now. Smith is not the defensive coordinator, but he was put in a no-win situation.

Smith is not why the Bucs lost today. At least, not the Smith playing cornerback.

Can’t blame the man too much. Julio NEVER sees single coverage and this game they just left Ryan out there on him. No bracket coverage, very little press coverage. That is a fire-able offense in itself.

  2. Lee Says:

Joe can’t let go of his love for Bucs corners. Baffled, the rest of us are.

  3. Season Is Over Says:

This team has been rebuilding for decade and you are telling the fans to accept it. Ryan Smith sucked again. Jones was shut down three of the last five games. Wow, the bar is set low here in Tampa. It starts with the media.

  4. Crazed Fan Says:

    Ryan Smith SUCK!!!

  5. Pierce Says:

Why not keep two players on Julio? I mean, why not?

  6. Tampabaybucfanr Says:

Matt Ryan didn’t need to shower after the game.

We didn’t touch him…..he picked us apart…..no CB can stay with Julio Jones when the QB has that much time.

    Silver Lining Alert!!!

We are getting good play from our four rookies…..Howard, Evans, Beckwith & Godwin…

Early in the game I think the announcers called Evans’s name about 4 plays in a row…..the kid can play….sure some rookie mistakes….but he can play.

  7. Done Says:

It’s the other Smiths fault. Where were the adjustments? Did Mike Smith take the Falcons money line? Why was Grimes not shading?

  8. BucEmUp Says:

Fock this shlt. If you are enough of a dumbarse to blame the players and not the coaching your a half brain dumbarse. ALL of the corners are being hung out to dry. Even Grimes was seen waiving his hands in disgust as the safties were “supposed ” to roll coverage to the wrs.

This scheme is full of holes. Ita the exact same reason lovie was fired and the same reason the falcons never won a super bowl.

I cant keep devoting my time as fan to the same failing product week after week. If it was close, if it were competitive it would ve different

  9. Bucnjim Says:

All I really expected was for him to stay on his feet! Play after play his face was in the dirt before the pass was thrown. Is it really to much to ask (in a dome no less) that you at least are in position? Play calling did him no favors but WTH is with falling down?

FUKC THE BUCS!!!!!!!! Until they change FUKCEM!!!!!!

Yep the media sets the narrative and some fans follow like sheep inserted of using their own eyes. You can’t lose to every team on your schedule that had a winning record and see positives. This is what I have about following this team, counting the number of wins for the coach to keep his job instead of using the eyes and watching the coach have a panic attack on the field every week. Oh the Joe’s said he was in over his head a month ago but win to garbage games and they forget it. Media wants fans riding the roller coaster and it’s a joke just like this coaching staff. Dirk won’t take this team anywhere they haven’t been before which is the basement. He’s not the guy and lucky for me I don’t have to keep watching. There never in the playoffs anyway. Tired of rooting for losers, make some changes Glazer’s you’ll get your fans back.

  12. Bird Says:

Yah. Most teams have played man over the top with Julio and /or linebacker watching the short passes.

Mike smith did not have good game plan and no adjustments at half time was a head scratcher too

  13. Waterboy Says:

Ryan Smith slipped several times but he wasn’t the problem, the problem was Ryan had all day to scan the field and throw.

  14. firethecannons Says:

I am hoping for a coaching and regime change after this. Dirk Koetter has too much respect for Mike Smith and Jason Licht is responsible for acquiring Swaggy instead of Calais Campbell and the 2016 draft(VH3 and Aguayo) Team needs an honest roster/coaching assessment, what works-keep, what does not work(Mike Smith defense) do away with.

  15. Waterboy Says:

I don’t know if it’s scheme or just lack of talent but the d-line as a whole is not very good and this is no shot at any one individual but the unit as a whole.

  16. Rrsrq Says:

Ryan Smith will be fine, when we ever get a pass rush (what pass rush). A lot of Julio’s catches were against zones, running all the way across the field and the play from Sanu was on the safety. What happened to it was going to be tough to keep Tandy off the field, wasn’t it last year when he was inserted that the defense started asserting itself, a player who is like a coach on the field.

  17. passthebuc Says:

The only thing Ryan did not have time to do in the pocket today was have a beer.

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

    Thats BS.
Ryan Smith was nit “assigned to Cover Julio Jones”
They played a Zone all Game. Ryan Smith had a Side.
Julio Jones caught a bunch in front of Brett Grimes, Too
And in the flats- in front of Lavonte or Kwon
And he caught a few in the middle- in front of Justin/Ward/Conte.

Ryan Had all day. No one can cover Any NFL reciever forever.
    Julio beat our entire Secondary
    Because of our nonexsitant DEs

We should all be used to it by now. Its been going on for 4 damn years!

  19. Curse of Gruden Says:

    ^^^^^^
    LOL

  20. 813bucboi Says:

Nawl it ain’t his fault…. Blame this poor coaching staff…. harbaugh please!!!!….GO BUCS!!!

  21. JimmyJack Says:

I’m reserving all judgement of our corner til they play under a different system. Something tells me Hargreaves could produce more. And you have to second guess coaching as to why seasoned pros like McCLain and Ward have been caught not knowing what their responsibilities are.

In the first drive or two we seemed to be handling Jones with SMith bumping and Evans over top then when Sanu got that throw we got away from doubling Jones and got burnt over and over……Evans was making a lot of plays at the start too then vanished. The schemes seem to get the least out of our role players. I’m not getting it

  22. Conte Piscateli Says:

Here is what I saw about Ryan Smith, Julio was torching everyone today, but on a key 3rd down on the final drive coach called 1 on1 with the best receiver in the league and the kid got up at the line of scrimmage and battled. He lost the battle but he didn’t bail out, he didn’t like up 20 yrds off the line of scrimmage. He stuck his nose in there and played. He is essentially a rookie corner this year, and he didn’t have a good day, but at the end he still played like a corner willing to fight. I give him some credit and think he’s may develop into a decent corner.

  23. Fat Vegan Says:

The entire coaching staff has to know it’s over. Don’t blame Ryan at all. We play soft zone with no pressure and our offense can’t buy 2 yards. #hireHarbaugh

  24. Pa Privateer Says:

I am not sure any CB can cover Julio most of the time. I think Ryan Smith did a great job earning his stripes from one of the best WRs in the league.

Besides, what are you going to do, replace Ryan Smith with a backup? Seriously, just give the kid a little wiggle. He got some very valuable experience today.

  25. Pa Privateer Says:

Seriously, WHY THE HELL was Grimes not guarding Julio Jones?

  26. Buddy Says:

Joe how does Ryan keep slipping first in Miami, then today too? What exactly is the EQUIPMENT MANAGER doing?? Is he as incompetent as Dirk or what? Now we have Jenna Freakin Laine calling out our players because a staffer can’t do his job

  27. James Walker Says:

If you put 11 men on Jones the other side has 10 men open. You guys realize that right?

  28. PRBucFan Says:

    lol “starting cornerback” ahahaha

Bet he wont be for much longer, especially not after this season.

  29. Ed Says:

Its a Bucs life! Get over it, this regime blew it, choked, underachieved, whatever you want to call it, its all over now Baby Blue!
