Rancid Quarterback Pressure

November 8th, 2017

Hey, the Bucs got a sack on Sunday From a defensive end no less!

Yes, it was Robert Ayers who brought down Drew Brees. For a brief moment, the Bucs had a pass rush. Very brief.

The Bucs now have eight sacks in eight games. Worst in the NFL. Yay!!!

But just how bad are the Bucs at getting to the quarterback? Per BSPN NFL Matchup, no team other than the Bucs gets pressure on a quarterback less than 20 percent of the time. None — but the Bucs!

Just nauseating.

I’m starting to think that you revel in this stuff Joe. The horse is dead … RIP. As Bucs’ fans, we need to keep our priorities straight … What’s important is to find a scapegoat. Lovie has been appropriately pummeled by this point, and so has Smitty. GMC just keeps smiling (see what little impact you’ve had tmaxcon), and Dominick has another gig making money (although Michael Bennett alone does have 6.5 sacks in 8 games this year … just sayin’).

I vote for sacrificing Jason Licht as being the one who didn’t get the job done. After all, he is the one ultimately responsible for the draft. And oh ya, the one responsible for signing FAs. Speaking of the 2016 draft (acceptable segue?) I noticed that DE Yannick Ngakoue for the Jags has 6.5 sacks this year also. Wasn’t he drafted in 2016 in the 3rd round? Ya that’s right (69th overall). Hmmm, wonder who the Bucs took above him in 2016. Oh ya, VHIII (1st rnd), Noah Spence (2nd rnd), and Roberto Aquayo (2nd rnd). So we’ve ended up with a nickel CB, a 3-4 OLB & an unemployed kicker. But Jason made up for that by signing Fatty Baker to shore up our DLine. Yup, we found our scapegoat.

Funny thing is that the other 4 teams on that list are all 500 or better and in the hunt for playoffs. Not Tampa though. We ‘re fighting for the 3rd pick in next year’s draft. This team has more holes than than they can fill. Pass rush is one of them. We need secondary jelp…def line needs to be totally re done. Our offensive line needs lots of help. We have no stud at running back. And the whole entire roster needs to man the f up and go out and earn their paycheck. If we started to slack at our jobs and just showed up I am Pretty sure we would eventually be fired. This team is loaded with negativity including its saloon doorn swinging fans.

We ended up with a nickel corner because the defensive staff doesn’t have a clue. VH3 played much better on the los and still no lvd blitzes when he’s an absolute playmaker. It’s no coincidence that multiple pro bowl players and super bowl champs who have come here say this defense sucks. Spence was bad luck of injuries which can happen to anyone. Aguayo was a terrible pick. Licht has missed on draft picks but also had a lot of good ones and nice undrafted pickups. Lots of Gms miss in free agency which is why the packers just stay away from it. Defensive staff needs to go along with some of those players like ayers, gholston, baker, conte. Offense sucks this year cuz oline is mediocre at best and Winston can’t hit open receivers. If Winston was accurate dirks play calling would not be scrutinized as much. I’ve liked Doug Martin but it’s clear he is done

If things don’t turn quickly, someone has to go.

Licht for sure….Smith probably…..and perhaps Koetter (depending on Jameis)

I doubt Koetter’s ego could handle it but a demotion to OC could work.

There is no question that the Bucs (for the exception of Djax) did not go for a “win now” draft & FA.

Even though he will be a great NFL TE….probably was a bad thing he was available to us because we needed a DE.

Also, remember both of our speed DE were injured…

  5. Time4Change Says:

    Let’s play this out….

Hire Ronde Barber as President (I would get Brooks55 but dont think hes interested). Need that buffer from Owners to front office.

Hire GM John Dorsey or George Paton

    Head Coach Mike Toub
OC Norv Turner QB Coach Ron Turner or someone with O-line/rb expertise
DC Mike Pettine or Jimmy Lake (DB coach/DC Coordinator for huskies)

The blood’s in the water and the sharks are starting to circle.
@Defense Rules- It’s hard to argue against any of your points. While no GM drafts or obtains FAs perfectly, there have been far too many blunders from Licht.
All that said, I’m sure that GMC had something to do with it!!! (For you tmax and ATrain!)

  7. BucFanFromOH Says:

    @Atrain4047

Noah Soence’s injury wasn’t bad luck. That’s what happens when a 230 pound DE tries pushing around guys that are 300+ every single play. Just another bad pick.

  8. Bob in Valrico Says:

There have been a series of reaches on Licht’s part that I question.
!. Aguayo whose meltdown was impossible to predict. Two things
his percentage was declining in his last year in college and his ability to kick consistantly over 40 was questionable. But I also blame our fans for not supporting him
and cheering him when he missed.I have never seen a fanbase make a player
so unwelcome before he even stepped on the field.
    2. Ryan Smith failed switch to safety slowed his progress in what looks like his
    more natural position.
    3. Ali Marpet On just the number of bad snaps alone, this appears to be a
move that is quetionable. Given that our run blocking has not improved
I think we should reverse this move so we can our nasty mauler run blocking back.

  9. AlteredEgo Says:

Not making excuses but…the Bucs have played 3 1st ballot HOF QB’s

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Oh oh, didn’t mean to open Pandora’s Box. Scapegoating is never useful, because we ALL make mistakes. But for all of us, there are consequences to those mistakes, either to us or to others. Thus far this season, Dirk & Smitty seem to have been the ones paying the consequences for the ‘mistakes’ of others, but that’s been compounded by their own mistakes.

This team isn’t structured to be a winner IMO. It all starts in the trenches … OLine AND DLine … and we’ve known that for years. Appears like you can get away with one or the other & still have a winning season, but having BOTH is definitely more better. Bucs aren’t even close right now, on either. Only a little bit of that is due to injuries; our lines are bad mostly because they aren’t nearly as talented across-the-board as other teams’ maulers. So it’s part lack of leadership. Part of that is probably coaching. But the bigger part is still lack of talent. We haven’t made sound ‘investments’ in our OLine or DLine, and now we’re having to pay the piper.

  11. doolnutts Says:

We need a power house DE next season PERIOD…. Biggest weakness on the team.

  12. doolnutts Says:

Oh by the way… Just saw on profootballtalk.com that Calais Campbell is on pace for 22 sacks(NFL record) so theres that…. I like Jason Licht but that was a HUGE miss…. IMO….

  13. Lakeland Says:

Yeah the Bucs got a sack. And they got piss on by a bunch of rookies and 2nd year players.

“Even though he will be a great NFL TE….probably was a bad thing he was available to us because we needed a DE”

LOL – so you would rather have Taco instead of OJ Howard?

See this right here is the problem. With soooo damn many of you that post here.

Everyone bitches that Licht didn’t fill this hole or that hole and needed to.

How does everyone forget that when Jason first walked through the door at OBP 3 years and 10 months ago – the Buccaneers roster looked like baby swiss cheese it had so many holes in it.

How do so many not understand that drafting for talent over need is what builds long term success. Jason sticks to his board. And his College talent eval team along with his directors, coaches and his own ultimate judgement have identified and brought in A LOT of young talent.

The job isn’t finished. Its a 4-5 year total rebuild plan. Dom left us high and dry.

Every evaluation hasn’t worked out perfectly which delays other positions of need getting addressed. But most of the players drafted the last 4 years by Licht (and a higher than usual # of UDFAs) have legit NFL level talent. You couldn’t say that looking at the drafting record of either Bucs GM the previous 10 years.

Licht drafted a TE rated in the top 7 of all players available this year at #19. Lucky? yes. But to pass on OJ Howard at 19 in favor of Taco Charlton or Dalvin Cook because we “need” DE and RB talent more than we “needed” additional TE talent – well that just leads to sub par value and ultimately sub par results over the long term.

The Bucs were high on Kareem Hunt and absolutely would have drafted him in the 3rd rd. But Chris Godwin was on the board and the Bucs big board said Godwin was a late 1st rd talent – rated higher than Hunt in totality. Licht gladly drafted Godwin in the middle of the 3rd round – trusting his board despite having just paid big bucks to rent DJax’s wheels for a couple years.

We “needed” a kicker and Licht decided stupidly to over-reach for one he thought was talented. We “needed” a CB badly last year and Licht spent a premium draft pick on the highest rated one available – which is not working out quite as well as needed – yet hopefully.

Drafting for “need” leads to reaching. Dom did this constantly and we all saw the (lack of) drafting results from his era.

DL positions have not yet been addressed hardly at all by Licht in the draft. One 2nd rd pick on Spence has not worked out as well as hoped due to injuries – although its hard to question that young man’s talent and potential if he can just stay healthy. Other than that a 7th on a DT who is currently with the team but on IR. That’s it.

You can bet most anything that 3-4 DL players will be drafted over the next 2 years. One or 2 of them will probably be high picks. But it will not be at the expense of leaving more talented players available at other positions with a degree of “need” on the board. Which is how you build a winning program from the ground up.

Is this really so hard to understand? That Licht (despite a few expected blunders along the way) is doing this the right way for the long term success of this franchise? By primarily drafting talent over need in most drafts?

If there’s good player eval behind that philosophy – which I believe to be the case – then your Buccaneers General Manager is mostly doing what’s best for this franchise – and currently getting roasted for it by so many because the team as a whole is grossly underperforming the last 7 weeks.
