Outdoing Lovie
November 29th, 2017Bucs fans may want to sit down before clicking “read more” and stay away from sharp objects.
Joe has an update on the current state of your Buccaneers defense, and you will be tempted to throw your phone through a window after reading this.
We all know Lovie Smith was a bad coach for the Bucs. Oh, sure, to the best of Joe’s knowledge, Lovie made three excellent decisions for the Bucs franchise in two years (not exactly a good ratio): He hired Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht; he hired Dirk Koetter and he gave the green light to draft America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Now Joe was rough on Lovie because, for a defensive coach, he was positively offensive.
Joe has to be fair. If Lovie was bad, good guy and class act Mike Smith has been horrendous, at least this year. Joe was looking up numbers and they are truly frightening for the current defensive coordinator of the Bucs.
In Lovie’s last year, his defense, per “The Football Database,” gave up an average of 340 yards a game. Well, hold on to your caps. Mike Smith’s defense this season is allowing a Moe Howard-like slap-to-the-face 395 yards a game through 11 games.
Lovie’s pass defense was an eyerake of a sieve, allowing 240 yards passing a game in 2015. Mike Smith’s pass defense this season? It isn’t an eyerake, it’s a kick to the groin. This year’s Bucs are allowing 284 yards a game passing, dead last in the NFL.
Joe believes a popular Twitter quote from our Commander in Chief sums this all up perfectly.
“Sad!”

This is a historical worse defense I ever seen out of the Buccaneers. Or any football of that matter
November 29th, 2017 at 12:26 am
Lovie says mike smiths defense is very disappointing
November 29th, 2017 at 12:51 am
Lovie’s losses were always worse… Tennesse ready…”You like that” Kirk Cousins….and those were all ex-Bears players he hand picked. Smitty might have to go, but Lovie was still worse in my book
November 29th, 2017 at 12:53 am
Maybe it’s lights fault- he’s picked all of these guys
November 29th, 2017 at 12:57 am
Phuck all this ‘longing for Deep Balls and All Air Kroyel offense’
Bring back ‘Buc Ball’ I sat through 14 losing seasons sitting at Every home game through that drought and the thing that kept me there was stuff like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UE2fk1pHYU
I was second row 30 yard line for that hit !!!!!
Give me a pass rush and a stout D!

SB:
Sadly, that type of football has gone the way of the typewriter. If any player did today what Scot Brantley did to Eric Hipple, guy would likely be suspended for half a season.
November 29th, 2017 at 1:21 am
We need more #Weapons for Winston, right Joe?
November 29th, 2017 at 1:43 am
Yup. A stud running back. Gotta outscore the defense. Or at least play a little keep-away.
November 29th, 2017 at 2:37 am
He hired Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.
His first mistake! Please don’t list the over rated losers he (Licht) drafted
because this team sucks no matter who coaches them.
November 29th, 2017 at 3:47 am
We need Edge rushers and O-line not a stud running back smh smh…. this is the site that wanted Johnny manziel soooo yea lol When wiill you learn Joe, when?
And Lovie had way less talent on his defense too. NO brent grimes, no ayers, no VH3, no beckwith, no TJ ward, no baker. SO yea u really gotta fire Mike Smith… Koetter should go too but whatever
Chris Simms at the beginning of the season said Mike smith’s defense hasnt changed in over 10 years and that the NFL has figured out his scheme. Didnt really believe him them but damn he was spot on.
November 29th, 2017 at 5:52 am
Hiring “Backstabbing” Jason Licht was Lovie’s worst decision. Since he’s been hired the Buccaneers have enjoyed a worse winning percentage than under the Mark Dominick years.
Simple as that.
November 29th, 2017 at 6:38 am
I believe Lovie would’ve fixed the defense, by not trading up for a kicker and actually drafted for defense in hs next draft. I truly believe he would’ve not let or at least made an argument for a defensive end and Noah Spence, the way the draft fell
November 29th, 2017 at 7:12 am
This defense FEELS better than Lovie’s because it very occasionally, makes plays. However, when you really, really watch it, it is far worse. The ONLY hope this defense has is for the offense to suddenly learn how to block and develop a run-game and manage the clock. I wouldn’t hold my breath!
November 29th, 2017 at 7:15 am
Anyone saying Lovies defense is worse than Mikey boys are morons. The numbers and eye test don’t back that mentality up. Mike has more talent and giving up the booty more than a drunk nympho at a Navy pilot party. He was hired to do a better job and just aint doin it. He makes the Browns defense look not so bad.
November 29th, 2017 at 7:27 am
Let’s see. REALLY BAD versus DOWNRIGHT UGLY. Nope, losing is still losing.
November 29th, 2017 at 7:38 am
Those are the number on the surface, What it does not show, and if Joe would dig a little deeper is what avg, offensive rank are they facing???? It also does not show how many possessions per game!!!!!! The incompetent one, always made the offense run to keep the clock running so on avg. his defense always played with 2 less possessions to face by league avg!!!!!
big yards just means your defense does not get off the field. its points per game and points per possession that tell the story!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!
November 29th, 2017 at 7:42 am
Comparing the two defenses is like comparing which pile of steaming crap smells a little worse. Who cares, they both stink!
November 29th, 2017 at 7:49 am
But 2 weeks ago everyone was pounding their chest as to how good the Bucs Defense was. It had turned the corner. Now it’s the worst ever. Lovie shoulda been fired for the 3 things you mentioned above. Licht is horrible. Jon Robinson has built a solid roster in Tennessee after being let go by the Bucs. Koetter has proven he’s NOT a HC in the NFL. WINSTON failures on and off the field is a PR nightmare for the Bucs.
November 29th, 2017 at 8:06 am
It’s hard to process, someone is running the D worse than Lovie. Brain.. squishy. No like.
November 29th, 2017 at 8:37 am
Does this team have to do worst than Lovie before someone is fired. Is that what I’m hearing Realist?
November 29th, 2017 at 8:56 am
Have you really seen how bad U of I is? Lovie better turn it around there pretty quickly, or he will be back on the couch.
November 29th, 2017 at 9:11 am
How was the defense pretty good last year and Dead Last this year with basically the same people, with the exception of a few?? Maybe it’s the All Pro Safety from Denver and the Rookie Safety and no Pass Rush!!!! Don’t ask Smitty and Koetter because they don’t know, all they can say is We gotta Coach em Better. They need to go ahead and Coach em up because they are running out of games.

Lovie’s losses were always worse…
what?….did you see the raiders game last year?….how many years did they put up on this defense?….
this defense has gotten blown out by the vikes…cards…panthers….saints…falcons….
this defense has made teams look unbeatable….smitty and dirks loses have all been blow outs this except for 1 (PATS)….GO BUCS!!!
November 29th, 2017 at 9:35 am
@Ptwalk
What you are not “hearing” is that the season needs to play our before you start talking about firing!!!!!!! Instead of screaming “fire everyone” after a loss!!!!!! Is that what Carolina did???? Because by the sheep’s standards, Carolina would have had 3 head coaches in the last 5 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes this season is disappointing!!!!! Once the season finishes, lets then talk about possible upgrades of everything!!!!!!!!! Then you can suggest the name of the Head Coach, that will never have a losing season and always makes the playoffs for the Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 29th, 2017 at 9:35 am
Joe calls Lovie hiring Dirk Koetter a good decision huh? I’ll be so glad when the Glazers fire losers Koetter and Smitty. I’d prefer Lovie over Koetter. At least we would not have to pretend or hope..for winning.
November 29th, 2017 at 9:40 am
@813bucboi
You have a short term memory, coach my scheme’s losses were so bad, that in almost half the blow-outs, teams called off the dogs in the third quarter and ran out the clock!!!!! His scheme was more than antiquated and he proves every week, that his soft, weak, obsolete scheme does not work even in college!!!!!!!!!!! the only reason was that teams showed mercy as they did not want to kick that dead old dog around any longer!!!!!!!!!!! ( should have fired his lazy azz after 1 season!!!!!!!!!)
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you really seen how bad U of I is?
you sound like someone who doesn’t know football at all…..when was Illinois ever a power house?
they haven’t won 10games since 2001….they’ve only finished above .500 3 times since 2002….
they had problems way before lovie…..how you seen how bad smitty’s defense is currently with the bucs…GO BUCS!!!
November 29th, 2017 at 9:54 am
@REALIST
LOL….this team has been blown out 5 times in counting this year…LOL…the funniest part is that yoto defend this staff and find every excuse possible for them instead of holding this staff accountable….
luckily even joe has put out multiple articles detailing how smitty’s defense is worse than lovies….and he’s put out articles detailing how the offense was better under lovie in 2015….
face it @realist….this team was better under lovie and is currently regressing under this staff….he’ll be fired on “BLACK MONDAY”….GO BUCS!!!!
November 29th, 2017 at 9:54 am
We’re weak in the trenches…both sides….we need DE..DE/DT…OL…DE..DE..
Fortify the trenches and this team will become good overnight.
The one qualifier to my optimism….QB!!! Let’s see if #3 learned watching Fitz.
I’m not sure he won’t be sitting for the first six games. But I don’t see how.
If he’s guilty of nothing but looking bad he shouldn’t get any games! If he grabbed the girl’s crotch…that’ll be more than six games!!!
Bottom line…hard to plan for next year when you’re not sure who to plan on starting at QB.
November 29th, 2017 at 10:13 am
Shut up Buc Realist..fakiest..YOU..were the main Pom pom skirt dancer when Smitty and Koetter were hired. You wildly flashed your skirt about how they were gonna turn the franchise around. So just shut the hell up!! All of your points are on..MOOT!!
November 29th, 2017 at 10:21 am
After having one of the worst head coaches football it sure didn’t get much better with overrated Koetter unfortunately
November 29th, 2017 at 10:49 am
Joe
You crack me up..Lovie made three excellent choices???
Licht, Koetter and Americas Groper??? His choices were as bad as his coaching. I don’t get all the Joe Love for these three…is this Buccaneers.com?
November 29th, 2017 at 11:23 am
no pressure up front + an offense that doesn’t burn clock = epic point and yardage totals. total team failure, but you can’t help but think that mike smith’s gameplans and adjustments are pouring gasoline on the fire
November 29th, 2017 at 1:19 pm
Chris Rob gets it.
Build up both lines, then worry about skill positions.
November 29th, 2017 at 1:42 pm
Jeffbuc, thanks for the laugh….lmfao….. lovie says muke smiths defense is #vaarry disappointing”
November 29th, 2017 at 3:54 pm
Mikes defense is worse than lovies but dirk is a better and more competitive hc
