Down On Jameis

November 11th, 2017

Super Bowl winner speaks out.

It seems the past two weeks, a vocal sect of Bucs fans have turned on America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Whether it is his inability to link up with DeSean Jackson on deep passes, his inconsistency, his early-game struggles or his win-loss record, a loud group of Bucs fans have thrown in the towel on Jameis and have gone so far as to start beating the drum to draft Baker Mayfield next spring.

Joe even saw a comment purported to be serious that the Bucs should draft Syracuse QB Eric Dungey. Good grief, liquor sales must be brisk.

It isn’t just a splinter group of Bucs fans down on Jameis. So too is the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Phil Simms.

Simms used to be a big supporter of Jameis but the stunts last week in New Orleans from a failed pregame speech to a sideline hassle with Marshon Lattimore that ignited a melee soured Simms. He appears with Russo weekly , heard exclusively on SiriusXM, and he didn’t hold back. Simms suggested Jameis is way too over-the-top with his Harry High School rah-rah theatrics.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: I will ask you about Jameis Winston. I didn’t like what he did with the fingers. I didn’t like what he did throwing the football against the media [weeks ago] in practice. I didn’t like him going after Lattimore. He is having a very bad year. He has regressed. He is acting at times like he did at Florida State. I’d be worried about Winston if I was a Bucs fan. How about your take there?

Phil Simms: I second it. It really is disappointing. What he did in the game to Marshon Lattimore, that is just really uncalled for in this day and age when you know the camera is on you always. I mean, look, I hate to say these stories: When I played, I didn’t have to worry about cameras. I could be cursing and doing whatever I wanted and TV was never going to show it. But now they have a camera on everybody. For him to act that way and to do that — and I’ve got to tell you the truth. I like him. I have met him a few times. He is very engaging, he really is. But, I didn’t even like the way he acted on “Hard Knocks.” I just didn’t like it. It was just too much. It was speech every day. You know, every practice, “Oh, we have to do this.” And he is getting guys together and giving them a speech. C’mon. Let’s just practice.

Joe is just going to come out and say it regardless of the backlash. For those who think the Bucs need to move on from Jameis, well, that thought process is purely asinine.

A guy with that kind of talent who already has put up gaudy numbers you want to run off? For what? Ryan Fitzpatrick? If not him, who then, Tom Savage? Really, so he is the answer? Or Sideshow Bob? Please! Folks who think the Bucs should turn the page on Jameis at this point in his career border on the lunatic fringe.

Does Jameis need to improve? Absolutely. Guess who else is struggling? Kwon Alexander is having an off year. Joe hasn’t read anyone suggest the Bucs move on from him, which would be almost as ridiculous as saying the Bucs need a new quarterback like Brett Hundley.

get off the crack folks, ain’t time to give up on Winston.

  2. Kobe Faker Says:

If Jameis doesnt play again in 2017. There will no doubt be offers from other teams for Jameis during the off season for draft picks

    Ny Giants
    Cleveland
    San Diego
    Denver
    Wash
    ny jets
    miami
    jacksonville
    buff
    minn

    they will offer 2 – #1round s

  3. johnnybuc Says:

oh yea kobe faker who are we gonna draft to play qb then ??? mayfield ? josh rosen? ya ill pass and stick with jameis anyone questioning jameis on the field is insane he has had some mental break downs this season but think about it everyone has. no one expected to be this bad at this point and it’s taken a toll on them. jameis isn’t used to losing and he’s not ever going to start getting used to it.

  4. Lamarcus Says:

Every bucs player, coach, ownership, fans, etc is struggling. Everyone. There is only 1 consistent player lvd and he was hurt. We can’t even punt block right now.

  5. Kobe Faker Says:

read my post, i never said it was my opinion

there would not have been any legit offers if jameis played well

2- #1s from the top 5 bottom teams are legitimate offers

tampa would have 2- #1s in 2018 and 2019 draft….draft picks to build a team

I have no doubt there will be offers…just sayin

  6. Roy T. Buford Says:

It’s not time to move on from Jameis, but year four is coming. He didn’t have a sophomore slump so to speak, but he’s in a slump now for sure, and we should hope he has not peaked. I don’t see an improvement from end of his rookie year to now (yes, before he hurt his shoulder). He still throws into crowds, makes otherwise poor decisions, can’t hit the broad side of a barn, and his fiery, peppy charisma is wearing down to be “all-talk no do.” Men will not follow you to shout to them to join and “take the hill” when time and time again, you get to the hill and show you can’t climb it. So while I’m not ready to move on from Jameis yet, his decisions and accuracy are on-notice…and I don’t want to hear his BS talk.

  7. ClodHopper Says:

As time goes on and cooler heads prevail and you can think about it a while, I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s just put too much in his own shoulders. Always there early, high diving every guy every day, going to everyone’s locker one by one, plus his duties at being a quarterback. It’s just too much for one man. He’s trying too hard to be too perfect to everyone and that is a fools errand.

  8. ClodHopper Says:

    Lol. *High Fiving.

  9. Redtop5588 Says:

Winston will and needs to get a extension ASAP I just can’t believe people these days don’t know or see great talent over half of the Nfl teams would love to have Jameis Winston Bucs fans just don’t realize what we got

  10. tmaxcon Says:

Jameis is not going anywhere go back to titans forum mariota nuttguggers… i admire your hatred but he is not goibg anywhere. no matter how much you crybabies moan and groan jameis winstin wiill own every buc quarterback record and led this offense to a championship…. once the glazers wake up and let licht get rid of cancer93 martin and dotson this yeam will blossom. The losing culture must be eradicted and roster rid of all holdover mentally weak bums…

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

It really all goes back to having a running game. it makes everything else so much easier. Play action, time possession, red zone efficiency.

  12. Lakeland Says:

I don’t see the difference between now and the end of 2015,In 2015, the Bucs were fighting for a wildcard berth. The Bucs went 1-5 during their final 6 games (Including the final 4 games), everyone blamed the defense. And the Bucs fired the HC and the entire defensive staff, and Jameis Winston went to the Pro Bowl. But it was all a mirage, Winston was terrible. He passed for over 4,000 yards, but a lot of it came in garbage time. But the fact is the Bucs offense averaged less than 18 PPG during those 6 games (with 11 turnovers).

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’ve always maintained that to win championships multiple players on your squad have to have career years. It’s early but see the Tampa Bay Lightning for an example.

And so let’s see who on the Bucs squad this year is having a career year…from top talent down…

    #3…wildly inconsistent…not a major factor…certainly far from a career year. Injury?

Kwon…opposite of a career year….again is he even healthy?

    GMC….not career year…average

LVD…inconsistent with some great plays and some really bad plays…but not a career year…

Brent Grimes…played well but injured for too many games…

You can go down the roster and who is really having a standout year?

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

    tmax,

what do you think Jameis value is in draft picks?

    kobe fakers opinion- (2)#1s & (2) #2s + players

i have no doubt there will be offers

  15. Lamarcus Says:

I rather my qbs eat Ws like it’s fries w ketchup than the whole team putting up Ls in blowout fashion. Jw needs to have some different type vets around him. Only Koetter defended him confirmed to my this team is only here for a paycheck. These vets hang the young guys out to dry

  16. Lakeland Says:

(Including losing the final 4 games)

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Clodhopper

I agree with you. #3 is trying waaaay toooo hard both on and off the field. He needs a lifetime supply of chill pills.

  18. 3-4 SILVABAC Says:

Damn u guys… Winston is our QB!!!!

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

I have not “turned “on Jameis, merely pointing out what the local media’s have glossed over

  20. Cobraboy Says:

    To heck with the immaturity.

I’m more concerned with how he STILL doesn’t look off DB’s, STILL focuses on one receiver and STILL throws into double & triple coverage.

  21. SteelStudBuc Says:

Jameis needs to shut his country mouth… learn how to speak English then get back to us.

  22. Lamarcus Says:

When that owner calls jw in that office and ask his opinion on who sucks I would think Jw ewouldn’t let up this time.

    Needs to go:
Gmc,ayers, baker, grimes, conte,dm,djx, fitz, tandy, dotson, esmith, sweezy, dsmith, Hawley, tj ward all should be immediately packaged to the Browns for 2020 7 round complimentary pick

  23. Lamarcus Says:

And it’s sad I read the story on ESPN and writer even defended the finger Licking debacle. A FREAKING ESPN WRITER not his team??? This is not a team

  24. BucTrooper Says:

JW has played about 40 games. He’s put up some amazing numbers. Imagine what would happen if he actually had a running game.

  25. Lakeland Says:

And the teams the Bucs faced during that 1-5 streak, during their final 6 games

    Indianapolis Colts 8-8
    Atlanta Falcons 8-8
    New Orleans Saints 7-9
    St.Louis Rams 7-9
    Chicago Bears 6-10
    Carolina Panthers 15-1

    1-5 against those teams
    The offense scored 106 points
The QB goes to the Pro Bowl
The OC gets promoted to HC

Something is wrong with this picture

  26. DB55 Says:

    The Messiah

  27. Pickgrin Says:

I guess when the wheels fall off on a Buccaneer season before Halloween – AGAIN – especially when the expectation coming in was to win 8 or 9 games minimum- that EVERYTHING will be questioned. Everything SHOULD be questioned at this point.

Jameis Winston -warts and all is BY FAR the best quarterback this franchise has ever had. If he doesn’t improve one bit – he is still better than any QB to have worn the Buccaneer uniform (while they wore their Buccaneer uniform).

Winston WILL improve though – he will work on his game – he’s a hard worker – with a strong will and a positive attitude. He hates to lose and the “immature” stuff we’ve seen this year is born largely from frustration over losing. Keep reminding yourself – he’s 23 years old and would be a NFL rookie THIS YEAR if he had played through his senior year at FSU.

Give this QB a stout Oline with a legit running game – to go along with the receiving weapons already in place – and watch Buccaneer offensive records get obliterated…

How do so few see that the Oline is flat out not getting the job done – which is killing our offensive capability.

Same on the other side of the ball. The D-Line’s incapability to get pressure is just KILLING our defenses ability to stop anybody when we need to.

Licht better dig in to the trenches hard this offseason. Both sides of the ball. We need some big boys who can do their jobs at an NFL level consistently. The rest will all fall into place.

  28. Kobe Faker Says:

    Klueless Koetter is lost

*kobe is actually thinking OJstocker and Godwin will get alot of targets these 2 weeks

Fritz can only throw short and the hail mary bomb…He cant throw 15-20 yard intermittent throws

alot of yac yards to OJstockr and Godwin and brate will have no catches because he is never open in Fritz eyes

fritz short passing will look great these 2 weeks

and guess what is going to happen when Jameis comes back?

    NO MORE SHORT PASSING GAME

Kobe knows Klueless K like the back of his hand

  29. JimmyJack Says:

They probably need to get Dirk out of here……A real NFL coach doesn’t let his players act like such jacasses in a speech.

Dirk has no control and no pulse on this team. My guess is he’s too busy in his precious playbook and not getting his team mentality prepared………. This is the NFgoddamL what the frig is this guy talking about eating W’s?? Give me a break Dirk your team looks so foolish and is getting laughed at.

It’s one thing to lose but getting laughed at? You think back to some of the great coaches that have been in the league and nobody ever laughed at their teams like this. It’s clear as day that this guy has no clue how to handle a pro team.

  30. DB55 Says:

Agree with Clod. He’s working overtime to offset GMC’s loser aura

  31. Not there yet Says:

I think everyone is right. He needs to just shut up and play. If you were djack listening to this guy, even if it was a great speech would you care if you know you’ll be wide open 5 times a game and he either won’t see you or miss badly? Winston shut up and do your talking with your play, simply put your mouth is always open like your receivers but you can’t hit them so STFU and play ball just like we tell gmc

  32. MadMax Says:

Yes, I said Dungey would be a good 2nd or 3rd rounder while learning behind Jameis, he could be a good backup and possibly take over if your messiah keeps struggling….but wtfdik!!!

  33. Lakeland Says:

    Last season final 4 games

    Points scored-77
    Turnovers -8
    YDS/G-299
    R YPG/G 89
    P YPG/G 210

  34. Broy34WantsGrudentoDevelopJameis Says:

Tmax I never ever thought I’d say it and while I don’t believe McCoy is the sole problem I do believe McCoy finally needs to go. I do believe there’s a culture that losing is acceptable and while they’ve had 2 winning seasons with McCoy we might as well get out of the contract. It won’t happen but the people that don’t say F THIS NO MORE LOSING need to go. Mike Evans Kwon jameis are the only ones that come off that way. It starts with Koetter having to go

  35. Bucnjim Says:

Winston is only 23 and I still believe he has the potential to be one of the best Buccaneer players ever at the QB position. Hell at 23 most of us were still getting wasted in Ybor City waking up with hangovers and strange women on Sunday mornings. This young man is an NFL QB with the weight of the world on his shoulders. By the time he is 27 he will be one of the leagues best. If he is able to mature as a player and man he will be an excellent QB!

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

The absolute HORROR..of being a Bucs fan. Its almost enough to make me run to muy local bar…now!! Honey you need anything from the store? I’ll be back in 30 minutes!

  37. Wewantgruden Says:

Hey Joe. Kwon is really hurt and it is hard to come back with a tweaked hami. JameisNOT is not hurt, it is a facad for all weak minded fans that for whatever reason hold out hope that this guy will somehow develop the mental abilities that is required to be a NFL QB. He had been exposed and is done. He can’t handle DKs simplistic playbook….. how in he heck do you think he will be able to handle Grudens??!!

Jameis is not hurt? You are out of your mind. Joe knows someone very tight with Jameis’ family. That is pure BS. — Joe

[Also, this “wewantgruden” character who is an admitted Jameis-hater is posting from an IP address in Coral Gables. You guys do the math. — Joe]

  38. ATrain Says:

    AMEN TMAX

    CUT THE CANCER

OR TRADE HIM FOR 2 draft picks Hahaha

    —–
BSPN has become joke. They don’t even really care about sports anymore. They are so busy pushing leftist agenda down everybody’s throat, that they would rather downsize and lose money as long as they can keep a steady small percentage of Americans brainwashed.

  40. ben Says:

Can the bucs win with the WORST qb in our own division???

  41. Season Is Over Says:

Why would anyone be up on Jameis? Garbage time stats are meaningless. He has failed to break out in his third season and shown who he really is. He needs to say nothing and win like real leaders. Remember those Kurt Warner pregame rah rah speeches? Their play does the talking and people respect that. This team simply gets bombarded with useless fake drivel that means and inspires nothing. Mr. Magoo clowns and gets clowned. Eric Dickerson’s eye doctor on line one.

  42. Season Is Over Says:

Manning led his team to the playoffs in his second and third seasons. The two prior seasons were 3-13. It doesn’t take a decade to rebuild unless you make poor decisions.

  43. Defense Rules Says:

@Clodhopper … “He’s trying too hard to be too perfect to everyone and that is a fools errand.” Exactly right … Jameis is trying too hard to be perfect. Jameis seems to idolize his coaches almost as father figures, and seems to be trying so hard to please THEM that he’s lost HIMSELF. Everything with Jameis seems to focus on what the ‘Greats’ do or have done in the past, and then trying to emulate them. Personally not very impressed with what Dirk Koetter & Mike Bajakian have turned Jameis into … I’ve seen a huge change from 2015 to now, and too much of it is them trying to mold Jameis into their image of what they want in a QB. And in the process, Jameis keeps putting more & more pressure on himself to be what his coaches are trying to mold him into. I know that’s all a ‘generalization’ without much substance, but go back & look at some of Jameis games from 2015 (his ‘escapability, his making plays with his feet & salvaging broken plays throwing on the run, etc) & check out Jameis’ transition for yourself.

On another front, you ended with an interesting question & statement Joe: “Guess who else is struggling? Kwon Alexander is having an off year. Joe hasn’t read anyone suggest the Bucs move on from him.” Good to hear that someone besides me is seeing Kwon ‘struggling’ in the middle. Reality to me is that Kwon isn’t a MLB, but Beckwith is (so was Mason Foster who we dumped, but we won’t mention that). Kwon gets suckered out of position too easily (because of his quickness I think) but makes up for it by not being able to get off of blocks. Smitty’s defense channels a lot towards the middle, but he needs someone ‘beefier’ to stabilize it there. Beckwith has the beef, but not the speed. Kwon has the speed, but not the beef. If Bucs used a 3-4 more often, BOTH would be on the field much more often. Personally wouldn’t have Beckwith calling plays at this point (let him get settled in at MLB before trying to have him call the defenses), but Lavonte can call the defense better than either Kwon or Beckwith. Heck at 2-6, what have we got to lose with a little experimentation?

  44. Notsurprised Says:

Completely shocked old (w) guys can’t relate and don’t approve of Jameis’ actions.

  45. DalvinCookRules Says:

Jameis Winston has a chance to be a HOF player, ONLY if he can find a way out of Tampa. This is a franchise that is committed to losing and making stupid decisons–it comes from the imbecilic ownership.

It would be awesome if Jameis were to leave Tampa, and take Mike Evans with him.

  46. Jim Says:

Fitz is your QB now. Let’s support him…

  47. George Says:

    Notsurprised Said
“Completely shocked old (w) guys can’t relate and don’t approve of Jameis’ actions.”

Wow. So let me see if I have this straight.
You think that “old (w) guys” are the only people who expect grown men to have the self-discipline to stay on the sideline (as in, actually follow NFL rules) when they are not in the game. And there is something wrong with this.
You think that “old (w) guys” are the only people who expect grown men to have the maturity and personal fortitude to learn from their mistakes and not keep acting like an arse. And you think there is something wrong with this.
You think that “old (w) guys” are the only people who expect actual leaders to understand leading by example

  48. George Says:

You think that “old (w) guys” are the only people who expect actual leaders to understand leading by example can be more effective and command more respect than being a rah rah cheerleader who eats his fingers are on national TV. And again, you seem to think that there is something wrong with this.

Perhaps it’s a good thing that all of (your) Repeal people don’t think like you do.

  49. George Says:

    *Repeal
    Autospell typo.

  50. JerseyBuc Says:

Again, logic is off. Kwon isn’t going to get an 120+ million dollar payday to play below average at the most important position on the field. I don’t have a problem with Jamies developing, I just don’t think he deserves the payday we would have to give him. Lets give him that contract and then see what kind of scrubs we’ll be able to afford to put around him. You think this team lacks talent now????

  51. Jimmy T Says:

Listen to Jon Grudens interview w Rich Eisen. He is very high on Jameis. Jameis is the last person that will be leaving the Bucs. These pundints nationally ? It’s easy for them to throw darts at Jameis because of the sideline incident. All the loons come out of the woodwork. “Oh he’s immature, he’s a bad person, Oh my god”. All that talk is ridiculous. He is a good kid and a good person. Jameis absolutely LOVES being part of the community, visiting kids, etc. He is not doing it for show he genuinely cares. U NEVER heard of him in college drinking or partying and he certainly doesn’t do that here. I’m looking forward to the Bucs improving on the field through the draft and FA and winning consistently and one day, with Jameis winning a Super Bowl! Maybe it with a new coach but for all u outright “HATERS” out there Jameis is going NOWHERE!!!!!!

  52. Eric Says:

I’m not an old w guy and it’s clear to me that he is an idiot. I’m a 41 yo Hispanic male and I’m sick and tired of people making excuses for the #1 pick in the draft to at least be able to throw a football accurately. He loves to have all the attention and people (FSU blind faithful) kiss his a$$. You can easily point out the fake Buc fans who basically care more about what Aimless Jameis does in his carreer than how “Our” Bucs do. Go back to watching football on Saturdays and stop pretending y
ou cate about the team. Race has absolutely nothing to do with

  53. Eric Says:

Btw Gruden says he loves every quarteback. If you actually listen to the interview he thinks Mariota and the Titans are special. All he said about Winston was yeah they can win and stops right there. He wasn’t asked about Mariota but made sure he mentioned him when not being prompted. Gruden prefers a guy with accuracy and real mobility for his quarterback of choice. The problem with that is that those are Jamarcus Leafwhich’s worst attributes. I’m certain he won’t get a contract extension so I’m not too worried about it. Also he has helped confirm that FSU fans are the dumbest in the country!!

  54. George Says:

    “Jamarcus Leafwhich”

LOL. How many sorry QBs can we fit into one name.
