“It Can Backfire On You When You’re Not Playing Well”
November 3rd, 2017One of the great analysts of Bucs football, former Tampa Bay guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996), says America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is in a “funny place.”
Beckles says he shook his head at Sunday’s Bucs game from the “DeBartolo suite” at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway and then came home and watched the Panthers-Bucs game on film.
He said he saw a Bucs team that was ok in all phases and excellent at punting, but a team that was victimized by shoddy quarterback play.
Beckles says he has always been and still is a Jameis fan but things are turning rotten for Jameis because he’s struggling while positioned as a young team leader.
“It can backfire on you when you’re not playing well,” Beckles said of Jameis on his In The Trenches podcast.
Jameis’ leadership will be questioned by teammates “real soon, Beckles said, if Jameis can’t improve quickly. He added that the chemistry with DeSean Jackson is so far off target it might not be fixable.
Beckles thought the Bucs’ sideline looked “mentally shattered” and the frustration on Jackson was too evident.
This isn’t the first person at the stadium who Joe has heard say the Bucs bench and sidelines were lifeless.
Man, Joe sure hopes the Bucs show up tomorrow.
For those wondering, Beckles is down on the entire Bucs defensive line, as well as the team physicality and energy on both sides of the ball, especially at guard, though he was impressed by Chris Conte.

Then stop targeting Djax 10x in the 1st qrt.
O.J., Brate, Evans, hump and Godwin all have higher completion percentages with Winston. Or you can just keep forcing it to Djax. Wtf do I know?
We throw to Djax so much I’m beginning to think Evans is the #2 guy but Wtf do I know?
November 3rd, 2017 at 12:37 pm
Just silliness – questioning Winston’s leadership/motivating capabilities.
The craziest notions just come out of the woodwork when your team is not winning.
Jameis had probably his worst game as a pro vs Carolina and was the first to admit it, apologize profusely for his performance and vow to improve.
You think he won’t play better vs the Saints? Think again.
Will it be enough to win? Who knows. This entire team is under-performing like a mofo so far this year.
Time to turn that around and bring some modicum of respectability back to this team and this season. It starts with #3 and I guarantee you he knows that and intends to do something positive about it.

Say Joe..Our Bucs will show up and they will fight hard. But a winning team..pumped and ready like the Saints will not let their guards down. Them Ain’t Saints will be ready. They are not wishing/hopin/prayin they will win. They Know..they will win. And they know..their Defense is good. They know..all they gotta do is hit jameis on that shoulder hard a couple times. And they will. I just don’t see it happenning for us. Maybe against Miami. But not the Saints.
November 3rd, 2017 at 1:40 pm
You know what really frustrates me about this entire season is that there were issues seen in training camp and pre-season games that was dismissed and chalked up to “It’s only the pre-season.”
All of the concern areas during the pre-season are rearing their ugly heads in the regular season. Pre-season doesn’t count but it matters and three months ago many of us were seeing things that was concerning.
“But it’s only pre-season…”. Uh-huh.
November 3rd, 2017 at 1:47 pm
If Beckles wasnāt such a self promoter & act like heās the greatest guard to ever play the game heād still have a job. Him & Mark Royals act like they are HOFers when they were average at best.

A 23 year old QB canāt have a bad game in the NFL? Thatās normal in the NFL for any QB.
Ben Roethlisberger 35 years old | 13 Year Vet
Game: 2017 vs Jacksonville L 30- 9
Stats: 33-55, 312 Yards, 0 TD, 5 INT, 2 Sacks, 22.2 QBR
Eli Manning 36 Years old | 13 Year Vet
Game: 2017 vs Seattle L 24-7
Stats 19/39 134 Yards, 1 TD, 1 Sack, 15.7 QBR
November 3rd, 2017 at 1:53 pm
Not sure about tomorrow, but I really hope they show up on Sunday.
Beckles is right though, all the rah-rah leadership stuff is nice, but if his play on the field doesn’t improve his teammates will start to block him out.
Jameis doesn’t need to worry about Djax, just hit whoever is actually open (preferably with an accurate pass…)
November 3rd, 2017 at 2:02 pm
@Joe
Weird how you referred to Big Mouth Beckles as “One of the great analysts of Bucs football,” when he so blatantly puts himself into the same category of “Troll” as some posters around here whenever he “analyzes” the play of #93.
November 3rd, 2017 at 2:19 pm
Spot on D-Rome!! its the..Buc way. Its only preseason, its only game 1. Its only game 2. Well now its game 8 . And after this Sundays loss, it will be..Ohhh its only another loss. Our best case scenerio now is, Lets hope we can move up to the 3rd pick in next yrs draft. because Winston is done. His shoulder is not going to get better. And neither is our defense. And then there’s these pom-pom girls here like….Unbelievable.
November 3rd, 2017 at 2:19 pm
Thank you soooooo much Ian!!! Reality is #3 is letting the franchise, the front office and his teammates out to dry. The inaccuracy and his inability to take a large step forward with his play has been the key to this disappointing season!!! I love Jaboo, but Licht went all in for him… this team has holes and rather than patching them slowly Licht rolled the dice getting skill position players. I don’t think anyone here had a problem with the logic at that time. We didn’t address defense issues because we thought we’d be out scoring muthaf_ā¬Ā£@s!!! Point blank period!!! All these weapons and Jameis isn’t putting them to use effectively at all…
It ain’t Mike Smith, Dirk Koetter, Jason Licht… Jameis, Mike Evans, VH3 and our young core haven’t taken the step forward into becoming legit stars!!! Simple as that!!!

A 23 year old, should be nothing more than a role player for a NFL team. Not the Face of the franchise. That should be a veteran player(Or the Head Coach), this is why this franchise sucks year after year.

and when you think about it, it makes sense…we never find those “diamond in the ruffs” type of guys or land a 6th or 7th rounder that come in and produce right away….FA’s meh…..a GM can onlu listen to his scouting department but if his department is only has 15 guys in there compared to 25-30 then he’s at an disadvantage….that would fall on ownership’s shoulders….
but your right….its comes down to poor scouting of players and coaches….GO BUCS!!!!

Looks like I am not the idiot that Nut, Lamarcus, and several others have been depicting as a response to my comments. Mr Beckles stated in his comments MANY things that I have been stating. You cannot have a preacher boy leader who does not practice what he preaches. You cannot lead a bunch of Alpha Males for a long period of time if you cannot lead by example. You can not lead if you do not learn from your ignorant mistakes. You cannot be ignorant and be a leader at the QB level. JW needs to be benched and in a hurry. Think about it this way: The Bucs brass would have sat him when he initially injured his shoulder if they truly thought these was longterm value. Look what Indy did with Andrew Luck on the same exact injury. They are trying to appease the base while actually hoping that he falls on his face so they can bring someone else in. It is a fine balancing act as you got to sell tickets and everything else that comes with it. After all, it is a business and not a sport.
November 3rd, 2017 at 2:59 pm
Carson Wentz is a ” Game Manager”, that’s what Doug Pederson is doing with him. Doug is building a strong running game and defense to protect him. They signed Legarrette Blount as a Free Agent, then they traded for Jay Ajayi. Their defense is ranked 10th in PPG. Their offense is 5th in the NFL in Rushing YPG. Doug Pederson and the Eagles brass are not as dumb as the Yucs and their brass.
All season long, all I heard was #WeaponsForWinston#
But they were the wrong weapons

I donāt believe in āPaperā Champions. But I will make a realistic prediction, no California Dreaming or wishful thinking here. But I honesty believe that we will finish the season at 7-9. I think we will we will go 2-4 in the NFC South and 5-5 against the outside teams. I donāt base my prediction on our roster or our improvements or upgrades alone. I base my predictions on the opposition roster, strengths, upgrades also. I know that we have upgraded our offense, but all 3 of our rivals in the NFC South has an explosive offense, capable of scoring 500 points. I donāt believe our defense can stop these teams, I donāt believe weāre that good on defense. I donāt believe our offensive line will give our QB time to go through his reads and utilize our weapons. And I still believe that Jameis is the 4th best QB in the NFC South. And I believe that we are the 4th best team in the NFC South. This is not hating, nor is this negative thinking, this is my opinion as I see it. And only time will tell, if iām wrong, then iām wrong. But I will analyze it as I see it, and this is the way I see it.

So in other words, the Bucs are who I thought they were. And it don’t matter how many weapons they get for Jameis. They will still be the Bucs, because they don’t have a complete team. The Rams, Eagles, Titans, Cowboys etc, the teams with a young QB, has build a complete team. But the Bucs stockpiled weapons in the passing game only. That don’t make sense, and it won’t work in the NFL. People should quit pointing fingers at the players and the Coaches. Point the ringer in the right direction……….Directed at GM Jason Licht…He’s responsible for this mess….With the poor drafting and dumb Free Agent signings.
November 3rd, 2017 at 3:16 pm
The Bucs wanted Jameis Winston, because they wanted a Gunslinger. So now they have that Gunslinger. Me personally I like ” Game Managers” as my QB. That’s all you need, and build a solid team around them.
November 3rd, 2017 at 3:17 pm
@LakeLand 7 and 9 would be a god send to this organization, but very very very doubtful. They can’t beat ANYONE right now.
@Joe The Franchise is hurt. Beckles is taking one bad game and as usual blowing it out of proportion. I got lots of respect for Ian. But did he not see the game JW put together on the road against a top ranked defense?
The sideline is dead because they don’t have the “proper” motivation. Koetter needs to start firing staff and cutting players, benching… no one is safe. That sideline will liven right up LOL
November 3rd, 2017 at 3:33 pm
Wentz had a better team around him Chris stop trolling. Winston is one of the best if not the best QB under 30. He just doesnāt have a good squad around him. Building teams take time and we as Bucs fans are lucky we have #3.
November 3rd, 2017 at 3:47 pm
Grt2,….That’s why I don’t blame Jameis Winston for this mess. Yes he’s playing bad, especially with his throws. But the Bucs had 8 months to add some a RB or 2, and not a 5th round pick. They had 8 months to add some decent CBs and DEs. But they added another TE with the 19th draft pick (But we already have Cam Brate). They added another Safety in the 2nd round. Even though Bradley McDougald was solid in 2016( Why he wasn’t re-signed). They traded a 4th and 6th to move up to draft Kendell Beckwith in the 3rd round. But Beckwith is a natural MIKE LB. We already had Adarius Glanton and Devante Bond to play SAM ( for a few plays a game). We drafted Chris Godwin in the 3rd, even though we signed DJAX as a free agent, and we also have ME and Hump.

When I say Jameis Winston is the 4th best QB in the NFC South. I’m not saying it in a bad way. The other 3 QBs has Super Bowl Appearances, NFL MVP, 1st team All-Pro. You can’t compare a 23 year old to these guys. The Bucs are trying put the pressure on Jameis Winston, but he’s not ready for it. Put him on a short leash and let him grow. The best thing the Bucs can do is build a complete team, and putting all their eggs in one basket.
November 3rd, 2017 at 4:02 pm

Lakeland Buc youāre spot on every young QB thatās compared to Winston ex. Wentz ,Goff, and Mariota either have top 5 defenses or a top 5 o-line like Tennessee. All these Winston trolls just need to look north to the Falcons. Has Matt Ryan regressed, not smart enough, hasnāt made the 9 year leap or maybe just maybe his TEAM around him isnāt as good. That might be the reason the reigning MVP isnāt playing like an MVP. Same exact thing happened to Cam. Get off of the 23yr oldās back. We arenāt good enough around him.
November 3rd, 2017 at 4:19 pm
Stop giving the kid 7 step drops 22 times a game…move him, give him 6-9 yd throws early and often in the first half of games
treat him like the 23 y/o QB he is and not like Matt Ryan in Year 6 making 4 reads with 3 patterns developing 15 yds down the field
Hope the D shows up…gonna be a long day if not
November 3rd, 2017 at 4:25 pm
LakeLand you’re making a whole lot of sense today man.
While I am not as down on Licht as you are, I can’t absolve him of only drafting 1 DE since he got here, and only bringing in older vets on the D-line. Jac Smith seemed like an amazing find but unfortunately he couldn’t stay healthy. We’ll see what happens with Spawn, but 2 injuries to the same shoulder ain’t good.
That being said, we already built the offense first, so we need to accept that and now concentrate on defense. I think the o-line can improve their run blocking, but wouldn’t mind upgrading 1 of our tackle positions. We’ll need a running back after Doug leaves in the offseason, but everything else needs to focus on defense, especially the D-line!
At this point I’d rather see the rest of Licht’s plan (at least 1 more year, assuming he’s not an idiot and drafts defensively), rather than blow the whole thing up. Again. For like the 5th time in 10 years….
Oh and sorry Mike johnson but you’re boy lovie dovie ain’t coming back so get over it already! Same with Gruden.

Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone knew that Blake Bortles was trash. So what did they do, they had to add pieces, so he couldn’t lose games for them. They lead the NFL in rushing by a large margin. They are 5th in Total Defense. 1st in pass defense and 1st in sacks.
Jacksonville Jaguars 2017
199 Pass Attempts | 238 Rushing Attempts
4-3 | 181 PF | 110 PA
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2017
279 Pass Attempts |153 Rushing Attempts

@ClwJB … “Stop giving the kid 7 step drops 22 times a gameā¦move him, give him 6-9 yd throws early and often in the first half of games. Treat him like the 23 y/o QB he is.” Couldn’t agree more. The way they’re forcing Jameis to play must make it extremely easy for the better defenses … quite predictable. Go back & take a look at Jameis in 2015 then look at him today. His coaches are trying to turn him into the classic automaton QB. Not working with Jameis; that’s just not him. Maybe Bucs fans need a new chant: ‘Free Jameis.’ Let’s see if he can jump that wall that he seems to be stuck behind.

Defenserules,
I am on the side of being more creative with the plays. Especially because the team invested in weapons for Winston. There’s a bounty of talent in the team’s pass catchers. Yet with all the talent the coaches haven’t been able to get all of those guys out on the field together. Just putting OJ and Brate together in the traditional spots isn’t impressive. Swing OJ to the X, alongside Godwin on a side,
ME at the Y with DJ and Hump or Sims and the Defense will suddenly become stretched and the match ups would be a nightmare for opposing d coord.
I have to disagree 100% with the notion that this offense isn’t suited well for JW’s skill set. In fact, If I didn’t know better I’d think that idea was a joke. JW is a drop back pro style QB. He is a pocket passer. He pushes the ball down field as good as anyone. As for the repeated calls for shorter routes, no offense meant, you clearly don’t understand the offense. I say it with the knowledge that JW on 95% of the plays has a short, quick route option. Problem from the stands says it’s play calling. FROM THE FIELD it’s JW who decides to throw down field.
JW has been less than impressive with his decision making . Particularly, with Game or situational awareness. That’s what the coaches are trying to coach out of him. Yes, that’s exactly what they should do. They’re not holding JW back. That’s just stupid and contrary to the facts. What facts? Glad you asked, pass att per game, pass att on 2nd or 3rd and long, He’s asked to be the guy and carry the team with his arm in every critical situation. Putting him in a sink and dunk limiting his throws is putting constraints on him.
Geez Louise sometimes the utter lack of logic is appalling. Free jameis by handcuffing him. Wells was probably thinking double speak, which had limited but effective use in politics, wouldn’t have an opportunity to grow in the sports world.
Congrats for showing us something new.

November 3rd, 2017 at 7:15 pm
DB55,
This is the problem I have with Jason Licht
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have a lot of room to spend in free agency this season. Some $67 million in cap space, in fact, a number that leads the league according to Over The Cap.
The Bucs finish the season 9-7, close to being a playoff team
General manager Jason Licht does not like spending big money on big time free agents. He likes to shop a tier lower: aging veterans who may have a few years left, second- and third-tier free agents who can play but wonāt transform your team ā and wonāt break the bank. So the overall spending power may be limited simply by Lichtās strategy on the market.
Still, overall, thereās a lot of money to go around and a lot of holes the Bucs could fill. Which means that we could, once again, see a renewed Tampa Bay Buccaneers team come August 2017.
This isn’t coming from me

This isnāt the first person at the stadium who Joe has heard say the Bucs bench and sidelines were lifeless.
And people think this team will suddenly wake up and snap out of it if this is true? Losing does two things it’ll make you fight harder or it’ll make you give up. If you are comfortable with losing then it’s extremely fair to say folks are doing just enough to continue collecting a paycheck. If it’s lifeless on the sidelines then there are two solutions. 1 blame the captains for pretending to be leaders in the off-season when there is no adversity
2 Dirk would have to give up play calling in order to take control of the sidelines.
I didn’t like schiano but he demanded his players do something on the sidelines if not in the game whether it be coaching up teammates or anything.
Koetter brought in a coaching staff not equipped to handle players who lack emotion or fire and if this is all true it proves no on is in control
November 3rd, 2017 at 10:01 pm
Some of you are just dumb, McCown better than Winston??
McCown has played two more full games and almost a third due to the game Winston got knocked out of the game. Even with that advantage in games the only stat where McCown has clearly been better is in completion percent. Even then we have to look at the type of plays the two offenses are running. Our passing game to me seems to be more focused on breaking big plays instead of shorter higher completion percentage plays.
Statistically Winston has improved year over year so we canāt ask for much more from a young player than that. The problems with the Bucs right now is our one deminsional offense and our terrible defense.

DB55, I don’t like the source of the article. But it’s just funny that he knows Licht like a book.

Dirk is handcuffing Jameis at every turn, IMO. It will cost him his job. Let JW be JW and get out of the way or jump on the coattails. So sick of everyone blaming JW3 for the ills of this team. Mike Evans has the dropsies again, Cameron Brate has had them too. D Jax refuses to to go after a ball if it doesn’t hit him in the breadbasket, D Martin can’t catch, Dirk doesn’t use OJ despite picking him 19th at a position that we were pretty set at, D Smith can’t handle speed rushers or bull rushers at LT, Mike Smith refuses to blitz and when he does our CBs are 15 yards of the line the “hot” read is pitch and catch, our D Line can’t get pressure by itself, Beast mode gets handled by TEs and RBs, McCoy is fine, the others are not pulling their weight. We get off to incredibly slow starts on offense, maybe that is because your plays are incredibly vanilla and predictable. Anyone notice how bland and traditional the route trees are? It is like we have a couple of sticks, bottle caps and rocks out there. slant on left, button hook in slot on right with either a fly or post corner on outside, RB to the flat so they can drop the ball when everyone else is covered. Sorry folks, I was as excited as anyone for Dirk but the game has passed him by. Don’t forget all the excitement when we hired Lovie, After 6 games, we knew we were in trouble. Well after a year and a half with Dirk at the helm, TROUBLE. We need a young, innovative guy that will bring in young innovative coordinators and coaches, no more re-treads (including Gruden-stay in the booth-you are great there)

Jjbucfan,
You have a late nite in ybor?
DK is handcuffing JW by having him throw 60-70% of the time. He’s handcuffing by making him throw bubbles and A’s. Nope JW throws thru zip codes.
So how does putting the ball in JW’S hands time and time again calling aggressive down the field passes how the phuc is that handcuffing him

Ian Beckles is a racist. I refuse to read anything that uses him as a source.
