“Noah’s Going To Have To Get Back To Gettin’ Used To Playing In That Brace Again”

Challenged

One of the mysteries swirling around the Buccaneers is the health of Noah Spence.

Just this month, there have been a few nuggets of contradictory information.

First, winning head coach Dirk Koetter said Spence’s separated shoulder, suffered on the first play against the Vikings, popped right back into place and subsequent testing revealed he got his strength back.

A few days later, Mike Smith referred to Spence as “not 100 percent,” explaining his shoulder cost him some snaps against the Giants.

Today, in a chat about the defensive line getting healthy on Buccaneers.com, Koetter said Spence, “Noah’s going to have to get back to gettin’ used to playing in that brace again.”

This all adds up to bad news for Spence. His right shoulder, surgically repaired in January, is just not holding up.

Is there a new element to the injury? Will he need shoulder surgery again? Did he come back too soon? Is it a chronic condition? How is the brace affecting him?

Tough times for the Bucs and their quest for defensive end decency, and for Spence. He was a work in progress to begin with against the run, and rushing the passer is not a position where players limited physically can thrive.

Spence’s last sack was the Bucs’ opening day, before his latest injury and the return of the shoulder brace.

I think he should gain sone weight not only for health. He looks even leaner/smaller than usual and offensive line have figured him out. Out matched 95 percent of the time.

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Man, I wish the best for this kid. We are so void of talented edge rushers that it’s not even funny. I think the wear and tear of a guy his size going against 300lb o-linemen does not lend well to his shoulder issues.
    The search continues.

  3. unbelievable Says:

    It’s a shame.

He played alright last year with the shoulder in a sling for rookie, but obviously we have to be concerned that his shoulder is never gonna be normal, limiting his effectiveness. We may never get to see all the pass rush moves he said he was working on in the offseason.

Or maybe he’ll end like GMC… bad injuries his first 2 years, but then stays relatively healthy for a long career (cue the GMC haters in 3, 2, 1….)

  4. NoFlyZone27 Says:

With Gerald, Clinton, and AngryMan (Ayers) providing pressure up the middle on passing downs, I wonder would it be worth bringing in Dwight Freeney to share his tips with Noah while gaining another chance to play for a contender?

  5. bucs_365 Says:

It’s chronic. You don’t have a shoulder popping out of it’s socket multiple times if that thing’s in good order. It’s a shame, but I don’t think we can count on him, ever. Gotta draft 2 DEs next spring. This year, just gotta hope we can find a way to get pressure using other tactics.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

NS57 played 81% of defensive snaps last Thurs. and was assigned the doubled teamed by Bellicheat!!!! I guess he does not agree with the joe’s assessment!!!!!!!! and it was one of the Bucs better pass rush games!!! could NS57 getting double teamed open up rush lanes for other D-lineman???? Hmmmm!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. bucsfaninchina Says:

Noah is just fine. Contrary to the Joes’ beliefs, he was regularly beating his matchup last Thursday. Now, if someone else on the end can step up and get even 50% pressure of what Noah is giving then we’d be cooking with gas

  8. BucFanFromOH Says:

Another post with 36 exclamation points. Are you shouting at your keyboard as you type?

  9. USFBUC Says:

The Bucs need to sit him so he can get healthy, they probably also need to think about using him in a potential LB role if he can play there at the NFL level.

  10. Mike Johnson Says:

Next man up!! Many other teams win with their..Next man up. No excuses. This is the NFL baby!

  11. 813bucboi Says:

yeah I believe its chronic….he’s going to have to figure it out, which I think he will…I got faith in him…he’ll pull thru….GO BUCS!!!

  12. unbelievable Says:

That’s a good point Realist, despite your obnoxious exclamation marks!!!!!!!!

  13. DoNUTS Says:

Agree. Its time to move on…he is injury prone going back to OSU/College. The Bucs deliberate for way too long. Its not like there is some switch and all of a sudden he is going to be a monster off the edge.

If Licht gets fired, it will be for 2 reasons…swinging and missing on Aguayo and his inability to get a DE in draft/FA that played even mediocre. He really blew the DE need and I would bet that the Glazers would have given him a pass on Aguayo if we had any sense of a pass rush from the edge.

  14. DoNUTS Says:

NS57 played 81% of defensive snaps last Thurs. and was assigned the doubled teamed by Bellicheat!!!!

Part 1 (81%) true. Part 2 “assigned double” false. Go watch the tape again. #93 gets the double.

  15. Capt. Blighe Says:

57 has one move and no double team is required.
Tries to speed rush around the outside and gets ridden out the back, no factor unless they scramble into him.

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

    @DoNUTS

Yea, GMC93 gets the guard/center, and NS57 gets Tackle/RB or Tackle/TE!!!! Now you go learn some remedial football so you can get your true/false right!!!!!!

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

getting off to a rough career start….wish him a storybook ending …but not looking good….

  18. Bobby M. Says:

Unfortunately it’s classic Bucs luck. There is hope…McCoy was injury prone initially before getting over the hump and playing at a very high level. Hopefully he gets healthy next offseason and is good to go.

  19. Capt. Blighe Says:

    Tape don’t lie !

  20. shabazz Says:

his shoulder won’t let him counter so he has to speed rush to the outside the dline coach should game plan and push the rush to him

  21. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

If you have snap chat and follow the Bucs, watch Noah hit the sled compared to the other guys from today’s practice. EXPLODING and crazy fast….Noah will be fine!!!

  22. Lamarcus Says:

He looks super small. He looks like a mouse trying to jump over a 3 foot wall.

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

    I like Spence alot
Its just my opinion, but because the Bucs are so void of talent at the DE position- its causing them to misuse Noah.
Its an act of desperation, to somehow try to genrrate a pass rush. But its going to end permanently damaging this young man.

Even in college he often played Linebacker. If they pulled him off the line, against much smaller/Lesser competition in college- then the size difference is much greater in the NFL.

Will Clark, Ryan Russell,Pat o’Connor, Larry Webster jr.
These are young DEs on the Bucs Payroll.
Instead of playing an injured Noah Spence at DE- give one of these big young Ends some reps. Instead of causing futher damage to Noahs shoulder.

Move Noah to LB. I realize that we have a plethora of Talent there. Again, I think we find a LB desperate team-and Trade Lavonte David and a mid round pick- for a Young DE.

Or Do the really smart thing
Play McCoy and Gholsten at DE, Baker at NT.
David and Kwon at OLB, Spence and Beckwith at ILB.

    Now thats a scary lineup

  24. Issic Haggins Says:

Baker may last 4 downs before coming out

  25. BRock Says:

separated shoulder and dislocated shoulder are 2 completely different injuries. He dislocated his shoulder in the game.

  26. Brandon Says:

I love the keyboard docs on here determining that a specific injury is chronic. First off, we don’t know how either injury occurred. Secondly, shoulder dislocations aren’t always super serious. Bo Jackson used to have his shoulder rammed back into place on the sidelines while at Auburn and then go back an play. Emmitt Smith did as well with the Cowboys.

Personally, I’ve dislocated both of my shoulders four times a piece and I know from experience that it takes six weeks to fully recover from a shoulder dislocation. It’s usually extremely sore for a week or two and then slowly the strength gets better and pain eventually subsides. If there is no additional damage other than the normal tearing and bruising when the shoulder pops out and goes back in, then there is nothing more to be done.

  27. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Not all draft picks work out. Had high hope for Spence but lack of production combined with injuries is all we have seen to this point. Seems to get moved beyond the pocket every time. I don’t think D coordinators having any concerns about neutralizing him. All I see him do is slide behind the pocket everytime and the QB is nice and cozy in his pocket until GMC creates havoc.

100% agree, switch to 3-4, don’t even wait for Kwon to ever get back, stick Bond at OLB for him now. Bucs won’t though, and will wind up permanently damaging Spence’s shoulder.
