Koetter Talks Marpet & Split-Second Adjustments

Yes, center Ali Marpet is a work in progress.

And it’s a good work in progress, winning head coach Dirk Koetter detailed yesterday.

Koetter hopped on the Buccaneers Radio Network and explained Marpet has brought noticeable change.

“His physical style of play and the firmness he brings to the center of our protection has made a difference. I think that shows up statistically as well as on tape,” Koetter said. “I think Ali still has some things to learn about making split-second adjustments. That’s an experience thing. And we’ve had a couple of snap issues in the shotgun. Again, that’s him, you know, being a little to anxious to go get his guy blocked, and just realizing that he’s got to make a perfect snap to Jameis first. But overall, very pleased, and [I] think the future in the center of the Bucs’ line is very bright.”

Joe had to laugh when hearing Koetter make the distinction between stats and film. Not everybody believes there is such a thing.

Marpet, 24, never played center in college or high school, so this year’s transition is significant. He’s done a nice job, but was the Marpet shift and the J.R. Sweezy insertion a wise organizational play? The jury is still out on that.

I think it was wise. The Oline has been a bright spot so far. Theyre not the reason the offense sputters. Gota win this week. Go Bucs

I’m not sure the Jury is too far from returning. Struggling running game isn’t more scheme, timing and play calling. QB should be checking to better run plays. I don’t think we take advantage of Defenses alignments and check out of passes to runs when we have a mismatch and the LoS. Last week Palmer checked the run to where they had the advantage and we got torched because are alignments were too predictable.

This experiment is about 1/3 of problem.

  4. Ndog Says:

I do wonder if Jameis has the freedom to check into better plays.

  5. Pickgrin Says:

Oline did not look very good vs Cardinals.

Played pretty well I thought in the 1st 4 games though.

A work in progress trying to find chemistry and consistency.

Just like the rest of the team right now – LOL

Marpet is an upgrade at center for sure. But he needs to concentrate on a perfect snap every play before turning his attention to the blocking assignment.

Other than that – the transition seems to be going pretty well.

Outstanding comments there R.O. I wish more Bucs fans would truly evaluate whats happenning on the field of play. But A lot of’em just see..view..the game without really knowing whats happenning.

I don’t see how the jury is still out… Marpet has made the center position more stout, and by most accounts I’ve read, Sweezy has been doing a good job at RG.

  8. Jim Says:

Marpet has the physical tools, work ethic, and the brains to be a HOF center. All he has to do is dominate at the position as well.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I wanted us to draft Marpet to play center. I was the only one hear that wanted it.

That said, when he did so well at guard, I was reserved about moving him…mostly because Sweezy was such a mystery.

The pass blocking has mostly been great. The run blocking? Not so much. Still say right tackly is a weakness as well.
