Jacquies Smith Gone

October 4th, 2017

Waived.

One half of what the Bucs hoped would be an edge rush that would make quarterbacks cry for their momma may, for the time being, be going back to momma.

The Bucs today released defensive end Jacquies Smith, per Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.

The talented but oft-injured defensive end last year blew out his knee in the season-opener at Atlanta and needed major surgery. He apparently couldn’t come back quick enough or strong enough for the Bucs, dead last in the NFL with but one sack.

Smith played a handful of snaps against the Giants but spent much of Sunday riding the stationary bike on the sidelines.

As stated earlier this summer, any Bucs fan who was banking of Smith to terrorize quarterbacks was also banking on the tooth fairy to deposit some cash under the pillow.

The tooth fairy never came.

Smith started 18 games for the Bucs through the 2014 and 2015 seasons and totaled 13 1/2 sacks in 29 total games.

  6. Conte Piscateli Says:

I have a bad feeling he ends up with Carolina and terrorizes us for the next couple seasons

  7. T in Orlando Says:

The timing of this does seem odd. Something must have gone down in the past 48 hours, otherwise why not cut him to make room for Martin and hold on to Cross?

I don’t know if Licht is working on a trade or signing, or if perhaps the Bucs got word of an impending failed drug test, but something is definitely up.

  8. JimBuc2 Says:

Roster spot open. Who does Licht grab?

“As stated earlier this summer, any Bucs fan who was banking of Smith to terrorize quarterbacks was also banking on the tooth fairy to deposit some cash under the pillow.”
It’s like banking on Doug Martin to be a Buccaneer after coming off suspension. Oh wait…

  10. Bird Says:

They are low on safeties right now who are healthy. Tandy and ward probably not looking good 2 play

They have to bring up one from practice squad

  11. Bird Says:

Plus his knee is probably like pot roast

  12. C-rock Says:

Boy, if this guy ends up like Michael Bennett on another team……

  13. GhosofSchiano Says:

    Stunned

  14. JonBuc Says:

Curious move…and damning that the now 0-4 49ers never signed him after they brought him in this off-season. Perhaps he wants to be a “spin instructor” given his stationary bike skills. 🙂 Too bad…teased with promise along the way.

  15. Destinjohnny Says:

Well since everyone says spence is going to get 15 sacks with his one move to the outside we will be okay………

  16. mike10 Says:

This move doesn’t make sense to me unless he is just not getting better.

We have ONE sack this year… and our other DE dislocated his shoulder in the 2nd game.

Also, why would we release him the day after cutting Alan Cross?

  17. PRBucFan Says:

A players best ability is his availability

  18. Oj "I Got The Juice" Howard Says:

    Geeze

  19. PRBucFan Says:

Dude has spent more time injured than he has actually being active since he’s been in TB.

    Just cant happen

  20. The Real Malloy Says:

My guess is they are re-signing Cross, but what do I know…just spit balling here.

  21. Buc4lyfe79 Says:

    What Walter said

  22. AlteredEgo Says:

yeah yeah….me says TE Acular will be brought up as a blocking FB/TE

  23. Lamarcus Says:

Stunner here. Now I like to see what the Bucs replace him with. Damn man smith idk can rrecover fully. Looks like a retirement is here for him

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s about time. I’ve felt Smith was a waste of roster space for a while now.

I think they might bring our TE/FB Back

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This is NOT a Bennett situation. Smith isn’t nearly that good.

  26. Buc 4ever Says:

Sure he was waived due to us needing to call up a safety from practice squad, plus his knee isn’t ready. We need to kick the tires on Mario Williams or something because we need a pass rush.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

anybody who counted on jaq smith is absolutely clueless. no team counts on injury prone players at key positions like the buccaneer organization which is exactly why they spend the majority of time in the basement. until the losing culture is eradicated and the bucs stop wasting time and gambling on injury prone players in critical roles the cycle will not end. The entire defensive line is a gamble they all have significant injury concerns especially the soft mentally weak captains..

  28. AlteredEgo Says:

oh…stick a sock in it tmaxmom

  29. Reach87 Says:

You do know you are soft and mentally weak yourself with all that moronic jabbing at arguably our best defensive player? How was your talk with him? Thought so.

  30. mark2001 Says:

Poor tmcon…a seagull must have dropped a load in his beer. We all knew he was a long shot. And was injury prone….no problem. But then to go on a rant about the losing culture and such is over the top. And mentally weak captains? Just don’t see it….and newsflash…every NFL player is a significant injury risk.

  31. martinii Says:

Bet the knee hasn’t heeled. I was looking forward to a possible comeback this year. I like others believe Licht has deal working. We are too short of pass rushers to let even mediocre ones walk away.

  32. DB55 Says:

I’m just glad we didn’t bother signing Elvis Dumervil this offseason. Waaaaay over priced at 2y/8m w 1.5 guaranteed. His 101 career sacks and 5 pro bowls would not have helped this team at all. It’s not like he has a relationship with anyone on the team like Robert Ayers. No they did not play together for 3 years in Denver.

I’m just happy Licht is building the best team possible and not all at ignoring areas of need. #GoBucs

  33. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I’m in a bit of shock…UNLESS Licht is going to make some major moves..don’t know..even Jac was classy about it on Twitter…

Damn shame..maybe the medical personnel know something we don’t???

    Damn…damn…damn…

  34. Billy Sunday Says:

Joe -Please get rid of this trash talking dumbo too. GMC is nothing but a class act and this shlong gobbler cant keep his mouth shut about him. I bet HIS couch cushions are worn out.

  36. Gencoimports Says:

    Very disappointing but not surprising.

  37. Pickgrin Says:

Curious timing. Licht must have plans for that roster spot.

  38. Doctor Stroud Says:

GM Licht doesn’t seem to do well in judging the injuries of his players and whether or not they are able to play. He might be too close to the situation. I would suggest that he move his office way across town and diagnose his players from afar.

  39. SB Says:

I smell a DE coming in for some reason…………

  40. SB Says:

    Awesome stuff as usual LUV!!
    Keep em coming!

  41. Lord Corn Says:

Well piss. Probably isn’t the same anymore after the injuries. Best of luck

  42. Easy Denman Says:

Interesting move at this time. They must have their eye on someone else in a trade or a practice squad player.

  43. unbelievable Says:

He must not be healed up enough to play again. Makes you wonder if this is the end of his career in football.

He was a talented pass rusher when healthy. That’s a shame.

  44. Pa Privateer Says:

    Dangit!!

It isn’t a huge surprise, but then again, I was really hoping for the best. Maybe the best is yet to come. Either we are going to poach a Safety or a DE off another team’s PS.

  45. Defense Rules Says:

SB, I agree, something’s up. Something happened in the past 48 hours that we don’t know about yet. Releasing Cross instead of Smith to make room for Doug Martin just doesn’t pass the smell test. My money would be on another DE coming onboard.

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is depressed…..Pablo’s Bucs have lost George Hohnson, Howard Hhones…..and now Hacquies Smith……Hason needs to find someone for Hay Hayes to coach up. Pablo says make a trade for Hulius Peppers”

  47. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Oh Pablo…Hulius Peppers about the same age as Simeon Rice?? Why not bring Rice back! lol! Well maybe there’s a few years difference, but can’t be much!

I say something big is happening in sunny Tampa…Jason’s wining and dining someone now with a contract in his left back pocket…Yeah, that it..

  48. Mo_Downs Says:

    Thanks for the memories, Jac

I hope you heal up and can extend your career elsewhere in the league.

    Again, Good Luck.

You clearly “left it all on the field”

    Happy Trails, Bro..!!

  49. SB Says:

“Hulius Peppers” has 4.5 sacks Himself!!
The Bucs have 1 Combined! I would give $ a Grand if every other fan would too just to see a pass Rush!

  50. SB Says:

    I concur D Rules.

  51. Max Says:

Wonder who had the bigger influence on this decision, Licht or Koetter? The coaches weren’t happy with Smith “Not in football shape”

  52. J dubb Says:

I think they waited til now that way the pats could not sign him to get info…chances are they will put in a claim for him cuz their pass rush is as bad as ours and they like taking on our ex players…belicheck will find a way to use him

  53. James Walker Says:

Who is filling the roster spot?

  54. Joe Says:

GM Licht doesn’t seem to do well in judging the injuries of his players and whether or not they are able to play.

    Kendell Beckwith.

  55. ManzielMadness Says:

God, I hope they’d trade for a guy like Mo Wilkerson… good player on a bad rebuilding team, but my guess is that they’ll probably just resign Cross for now

  56. Capt.Tim Says:

    We have two
    Will Clark and Ryan Russell
Both have shown potential. We need to get them more playing time.
Why not? Cant do worse that our current starters.

It usually takes a young DE 2-3 years to develop.
Drafting a rookie next year, wont help the team much in the immediate future.
Either trade for a decent DE, sign from another practice squad,
Or try to develop what we have. Those two guys actually might produce some heat.

    We gotta try something.

  57. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    They’ll promote Clark..and then re-sign Cross..that’s what I think will happen…for now..

  58. Capt.Tim Says:

    The best Answer
Trade all pro linebacker Lavonte David for a good DE.

Move Kwon to his spot, Beckwith takes over the middle.
Beckwith is wasted at Strongside, a postion that is on the field less than 50% of the snaps.
Adarious and Lynch can handle strongside.

David has value, and is at a position of surplus strength.
If we are gonna trade( which I doubt), thats the move

  59. Capt.Tim Says:

    If only we had a DE . . .

  60. Bird Says:

    Trade lavonte David ?

Bro- lay off the pirate joints.

You could argue or have discussion that he is best defender on team (remember kwon always out and grimes is 34)

  61. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Ol licht with great vision building the team for the 2020 season

  62. orlbucfan Says:

Disappointing but not surprising. Bucs offense has to be at the top of their game (DK, too) tonight. Only way we’ll win. I’ve been waiting on this offense for 3 years. Hope it explodes tonight. Weather will be wet! Go Tampa Bay!!

  63. Pistol Pete Says:

Not like he was making a difference….had great run over the first few games two years ago and went poof…..time to let go, teach Spence an inside spin move and start blitzing…

  64. D-Rome Says:

Curios move by the Buccaneers. They need DE depth. I don’t understand why now. Did they really need 365+ days to make a decision on this especially when he was close to coming back? Perhaps there is no way he will ever be 100%.

  65. Keir Says:

When it comes to DE’s or an edge rush…We are just Snake Bit!

Time to start rattling around in the personnel or scouting department and maybe get some proven defensive types in there Glazers!
