“We Really Struggled To Control The Line Of Scrimmage”
September 26th, 2017So what held back the Buccaneers running game Sunday?
Or perhaps the better question is why did Dirk Koetter gave up on it so quickly?
Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday evening, tight end Cameron Brate offered a reason/theory.
“We really struggled to control the line of scrimmage,” said Brate, who seemed to think the Bucs run didn’t get going because of failures in the trenches.
Interesting coming from Brate after studying film with his coaches during the day.
Maybe that’s why Koetter only gave his No. 1 running back five handoffs. The Bucs had just nine rushes, one by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.
It’s extremely rare to see any NFL team rush just nine times and notch a “W.”

These are highly paid players and I just can’t see any excuse from them as a good one. The offense isn’t banged up and they stunk up the stadium. The next man up mentality isn’t working for the Bucs. Maybe there is a good reason why Lights contract hasn’t been renewed yet.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:01 am
But wait! I thought it was a “passing league”! What do we need a ground game for?!!!!
Any questions?! You HAVE TO have a run-game.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:02 am
Since Lovie’s departure Licht has made serious errors. Not that Lovie didn’t too, but the good choices draft wise were made while he was still here.
I thought controlling the line was the purpose of the new blocking icon tight end.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:11 am
we suck again…. man, it happened so quickly
September 26th, 2017 at 11:19 am
we have a 8-8/9-7 line
dont shoot the messenger
September 26th, 2017 at 11:27 am
Really?
September 26th, 2017 at 11:32 am
Eric
ignorant bad character lovie smith did more damage in two years than the glazers clowns have done in a decade plus without daddy…. The POS smith wasted 40 plus million dollars….. Licht is a miracle worker compared to the POS lovie smith and his pathetic friends and family staff of thieves. lovie is the worst thing to happen to the bucs period.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:35 am
I couldn’t have told you that.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:39 am
Looks like us and Miami took they’re bye’s last weekend.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:43 am
But that oline so great. I’m confused…
September 26th, 2017 at 11:44 am
I would rather see a gm waste a lot of cash on free agents that set us back one year. Than constantly seeing a gm waste second round picks and 1st rd picks at that. We didn’t need to sign Hargreaves we could have gotten a tackle. There has been a lot of good corners become free agents. We didn’t need oj Howard we needed a rb or defense end who can get after the qb. We damn sure didn’t need that safety who couldn’t tackle in college in the second round. He gets one or two right and you guys think he is a genius. Everyone one gets a couple right every year. It’s the gm that constantly gets round 5-7 picks right. Instead we seem to cut all those players just wasted picks so why not trade those to move up. If he would have did a better job drafting receiver we would not have had to draft Godwin in the 3rd and drafted a Kareem hunt. But no we have cut countless late round receivers. And you know when your not doing a good job drafting. Is when you watch all the other games and don’t here one name of someone you cut making another roster. Use to all the time with the Dominick regime. Turn on a games and there would be 1-2 of our players starting on other rosters. Now I google players we drafted and cut and they are out of league.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:51 am
draft all defensive and offensive lineman next year and sign every Undrafted offensive and defensive lineman and only bring in those positions. Because until we get better lines on both sides of the ball these types of games will be the norm. What do guys think Eli and tom are going to do in the next two games Against a defensive that just let Keenan and glennon throw for 650+ yards and 4 tds. I would recommend getting a case instead of 12 pack this weekend and going ahead and calling out of work next friday.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:52 am
It’s interesting both us and Miami just si happen to be on the last weekend and both laid eggs. Ajayi rush 28x for 122 the previous week. Sunday he rushed 11x for 16 yards. Things that make me go hmmm.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:54 am
This against the lowly jets. Who are clearly tanking.
September 26th, 2017 at 11:59 am
The O line leaves a lot to be desired, considering the majority of these guys are “maulers” whose bread and butter is supposed to be pushing guys around in the run game.
September 26th, 2017 at 12:00 pm
Fameis had 40 pass attempts Sunday cutler had 44. I got waaayy to much brains to be slow to s@$#.
September 26th, 2017 at 12:07 pm
Bucs Oline has some shoring up to do. Hope they continue to improve. There is talent there – mostly young talent – still developing and doing so under fire.
Doug Martin will likely provide a “boost” for the run game when he comes back in 7 days.
We need to find a way to win against the Giants without Doug though…
September 26th, 2017 at 12:15 pm
tmax….lovie has been long gone….all the bucs short comings needs to be directed at the man in charge now….and yet another blow out under his belt…im pulling for him but if dirk doesn’t get his sh!t together he will be gone too…and he will take over the top spot as the worse coach in buc history…..doing less with more talent….GO BUCS!!!!
September 26th, 2017 at 12:30 pm
Sky is falling I guess. Daing it’s crazy how the fans over react after one game. Let’s give it a little time before we all start pointing the finger. Keep the faith and go Bucs!
September 26th, 2017 at 1:01 pm
It was 1 game folks…. 1 game. Settle down.
September 26th, 2017 at 1:01 pm
Nice Try Tmaxcon..man!..Blaming our current woes on Lovie. You must have partied with Joe last night….Unless our current coach changed colors, he’s not Lovie Dovie. The Blame for the Bucs woes go directly to and are placed square
on the Head Of Coach Koetter. He’s the captain of the Ship. so don’t get it twisted with your..alternative..facts.
September 26th, 2017 at 1:52 pm
So now Licht is a bad GM, Koetter is a bad coach, Smith is a terrible DC, Jameis is a bad quarterback, the O-line sucks, the defense sucks, and we are a losing team. Then what were they last week? Because I damn sure didn’t hear any of this last week. Just like we are taking back Raymond James we need to take back JoeBucsFan because some of you need to understand what it means to be a fan and support your team win or lose. Poop or get off the pot, either you are for the Bucs or against the Bucs. This team doesn’t have a losing record and you are calling them losers and busts. People are questioning Jameis Winston for 3 picks wondering if a franchise quarterback, are you kidding me. Every year Jameis has been on this team our win total has went up. I guess Matt Ryan is a Bust too because he threw 3 picks on Sunday. It’s time you clowns start being held accountable for your Bullsh*t, don’t come back on JBF acting like a fan the next time we win, you will be called out. If you can’t support the team when they lose don’t support them when they win. How are you helping the team by be being negative all the damn time, if you are going to be a fan be a fan and stop acting like a little B*tch every time we don’t win. Yes I’m disappointed that we lost but i’m not giving up on the team after one loss, just as i wasn’t claiming Superbowl after we won 1 game. Stop overreacting!!!!!!!!!!
September 26th, 2017 at 2:15 pm
Funny thing is, we didn’t look that bad on offense in the 2nd half until Jameis had to throw another INT. We were driving in the 4th quarter and if we scored would have ONLY been down by one TD with plenty of time left. Once we were down by 25 I thought the game was over until we started scoring FINALLY. Somehow I knew Jameis was NEVER going to KEEP scoring though. I kept waiting to see him throw another INT since he throws SO many. Why can’t he take care of the football when there is SO much focus on him protecting the ball? Will he protect the ball against the Giants? After watching what he did Sunday I doubt it. I wish we would have traded that No.1 pick to someone else and got an extra 1st round pick the next year (among other extra picks). Winston and Glennon are average QB’s with ALMOST identical stats. Looks like another wasted year waiting for Jameis to develop. Playoffs or Bust! Go BUCS!

Often wonder if fans & media from other NFL teams spend so much time & energy searching for scapegoats. For the most part, there’s pretty good parity in today’s NFL. Also for the most part, on any given game-day, 1 team wins & 1 team loses. Like one of my coaches used to say after a loss, ‘Suck it up buttercup. Time to move on.’ (Good coach but strange sometimes). But he was right … can’t dwell on losses. We may lose several in the near future because of injuries, but that doesn’t mean our season has to go down the tubes.
What we need right now is for the offense to start carrying more of the load. They’ve got the best weapons, and they need to ‘suck it up’ and start putting pts on the board AND eating up the clock AND stop turning it over. Right now they’re no better than they were last half of last season … 22 PPG average through last 8 games and 23 PPG through 1st 2 games this season. Passing yardage is almost the same (about 250 per game average) while rushing yardage is down by about 20 YPG (still less than 100 YPG rushing however). While our defense heals, our offense needs to step up big-time.
September 26th, 2017 at 3:09 pm
we arent horrible but we arent elite.
middle of the pack.
if we draft better.. we will be better
September 26th, 2017 at 3:15 pm
We hired a guy as head coach who was run out of Atlanta, and nobody else was sniffing as head coach material.
Bad hire it appears. AGAIN.
September 26th, 2017 at 3:29 pm
@eric….be careful speaking the truth…..you’ll be labeled a “sheep”….GO BUCS!!!
September 26th, 2017 at 3:33 pm
The Bucs are not horrible, not by a long shot. They are a decent 7-9 team, they don’t have the players to compete for a playoff berth.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:55 pm
Mediocre at best! Sorry you “Son of B’s” we ain’t there yet! CONTINUE TO BUILD A WALL! The Defensive Backfield play and Coaching looks ….wait for it high schoolish! We very much need Doug Nartin back! And we missed out on Joe Mixon “THE MITIGATING FACTOR” And we now need a win in the worst way or this thing could start to snowball!!
September 26th, 2017 at 5:59 pm
I totally agree with BUC THE WORLD and DEFENSE RULES!
Get a grip and be more than a FAIR -WEATHERED fanš
Out of 32 teams someone is going to lose or win every week. BUCS are no other team will monopolize every win…GET REAL…this is not FANTASY!
GO BUCSā
September 26th, 2017 at 6:06 pm
The Vikings have one of the top defenses in football – AND you played them on the road – AND you got down big early which made you one dimensional.
When all those things happen, you lose. The Bucs did that to other teams all day and night in the glory years, with the exception of the offense putting the other teams down huge early, but when you play a good/top defense on the road you normally get your rear ended handed to you.
The issue is mainly expectations. Watching the dolts in here dismiss the Vikings and say the Bucs would wipe the floor with them – that just shows a complete lack of understanding of football and what wins games. Also the moment I saw the unexpected news that Grimes was out, all hope was lost since that meant Ryan Smith would play and he’s the worst corner I’ve ever seen – and that’s not hyperbole, he’s really the worst corner I’ve ever seen, ever.
But hey, it’s one game, it’s not a big deal, this happens. Even the 2002 Bucs went on the road to Philly, against a top defense, and go their rears handed to them. Of course a few months later they went back with a fire lit under their rear ends and destroyed them – lets hope that happens again.
September 26th, 2017 at 7:09 pm
Agree Rod Munch!
September 26th, 2017 at 8:33 pm
Kobe was very upset
why wasnt there a change? do anything! “It might as well been Ryan Griffen” Smith wasnt even competitive. move mclain outside and put elliot in the slot?
playoff teams gms and coaches would have cut Ryan Griffen Smith monday morning
September 26th, 2017 at 9:32 pm
But OJ Howard can BLOCK!!!
September 26th, 2017 at 10:00 pm
game flow and penalties were bigger factors IMO. But it’d be smart of Warhop to use this butt whooping as an opportunity to motivate your OL to dominate next week
September 27th, 2017 at 6:57 am
Good sane analysis Rod. Agree with all except I have a sense young fella is probably not the worst corner in the league. Key this week is ball protection, TOP and special teams. Coaching has to be tight to make that happen. Sounds obvious but I sense that will be key vs Giants and I think we’ll win a low scoring game.
Go Bucs!
September 27th, 2017 at 7:13 am
The line definitely didnt get any push. I think the main problem are the RBs. Cmon we have got one guy playing Twister in the backfield and another who needs a compass. Get the ball and run north as fast as possible!!! 3 yds and a cloud of dust, ala eric rhett and lars tate, beats the heck out of 2nd and 12. Go Bucs
