The Case For Ronde Barber

September 14th, 2017

Campaign has begun.

It was one of Joe’s all-time favorite radio rants.

Years ago, some fool called up Joe’s good friend, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, and basically was disparaging towards former Bucs stud fullback Mike Alstott, who was still very much playing for the Bucs.

This didn’t sit well with Duemig who had a classic retort. “If you like football you like Mike Alstott, and if you don’t like Mike Alstott, you are a dumb @ss!”

Basically, Adam Schein is saying the same thing to Pro Football Hall of Fame voters about former Bucs corner Ronde Barber, if Barber is not elected into the august body this winter.

Barber was nominated this week along with 107 others for the 2018 list of modern-era former players eligible to be elected during Super Bowl weekend.

Of course, prized JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman is the lone voter representing the Tampa Bay area. The 40+ member selection committee, of which Ira is a member, will whittle the list down to 25 and then to 15. Then the final 15 will be debated among the Hall of Fame voters on Super Bowl weekend.

Only five modern-era players are voted to the Hall each winter. And Schein thinks it is a crock if Barber is not among the anointed five. Schein, a popular national sports radio and TV voice, took to his CBS Sports Network forum, “Schein on Sports,” and called out anyone who is thinking of not voting for Barber.

In so many words, Schein said those who don’t vote for Barber don’t like football.

I can’t stand listening to or looking at Adam Schein but even he knows Barber is a first ballot Hall Of Famer. The guy has the numbers to show how good he was.

  2. Buc50 Says:

He won’t get in but he’s certainly worthy. If he played in a bigger market, it would be a no brainer.

I didnt know you had like the same players as everybody else or ur a dumb ass. Duemig sounded like the dumb ass with that. And a problem w me and sport radio. The host is always right and if u don’t agree with them your a dumb ass.

I think he belongs in. I also think Lynch belongs in also. The voters need to get the safety position its due praise. No idea why so few safetys are in. Lynch, Atwater, Dawkins and D Woodson all belong in, in my opinion. Go Bucs

  5. Phil Says:

I see Simeon Rice wasn’t even nominated. HOF is a joke.

[Not sure where you looked but Rice very much is a nominee. — Joe]

  6. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Best nickel corner in the history of football. If you’re the best at anything in the history of the game you belong in the Hall

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

To those who watched, it’s a no-brainer. For those who regard stats, it’s a no-brainer. The only thing keeping him out is as Buc50 stated, “small-market team”.

  8. Bucn Enough Says:

Sure do miss the old uniforms..
    They were classy and clean…
    New ones=clown suits

  9. unbelievable Says:

    Well said Buc50 and Bucsfanmann

Ronde should 100% be in. The guy dominated at his position for a decade, never missed a game, and was a complete class act on and off the field. He was the first guy to crack 20+ sacks and 40+ interceptions, and:

The only player in NFL history with 45+ interceptions and 25+ sacks.

    28 career sacks
    47 career interceptions
    224 consecutive game starts

    All with the Bucs.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    he’ll get in…GO BUCS!!!

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

Best blitzing DB in NFL history.

  12. SB Says:

Ronde tied for 6th most Consecutive Starts in NFL History.
    Derrick Brooks is 10th. Btw.

    @ everyone:

Not only does Ronde Barber, John Lynch, and Simeon Rice deserve to go to the HOF but so does Hardy Nickerson.
