Bucs May Be Doomed

September 7th, 2017

Alarming data.

If history is a barometer, the Bucs are screwed.

Researchers at the four-letter were digging and what they unearthed will drive Bucs fans to guzzle their Hurricane Irma stash of alcohol long before the storm comes knocking.

Per BSPN, far more often than not teams that have played 16 straight games in recent years have had horrid seasons.

Since bye weeks were introduced in 1990, eight NFL teams have played games in 16 straight weeks, as Miami and Tampa Bay will do after their Week 1 game was moved to Week 11. Only one of those eight made the playoffs, while the other seven finished with 4.3 wins on average.

If that doesn’t make a Bucs fan want to shove his head in the toilet, Joe isn’t sure what would.

As Joe has stated, it is borderline irresponsible the NFL doesn’t have contingency plans in place to move games in harm’s way long before the season kicks off.

    Irrelevant.
Who were the teams? That’s what matters.

  2. johnnybuc Says:

nfl really screwed us on this one… i know the game was close but you can’t tell me that there wasn’t enough time to organize a neutral site for the game … i suspect the miami owner got greedy and wasn’t willing to give up another home game .

  3. gbobucsfan Says:

    So you’re telling me there’s a chance ! !

  4. Buccaneer scotty Says:

That’s because NFL players have turned into a bunch of p@ssys like the rest of the world !!!!

  5. Bird Says:

Their bye was week 11. If they didn’t have 4.3 wins by then anyways , then season was a downer .

So throw that stat out the window

  6. Edgar Perez Says:

Hopefully not us. The bigger thing is what will happen this season if there is another situation and the two teams don’t share the bye to play then?

  7. JWBUCS Says:

History Does Not Dictate The Future! The success of this Glazer Tampa Bay NFL Team in 2017 still comes down to player attitude, determination, focus of each athlete executing his individual job and a measure of luck over the 16 games of these guys staying reasonably healthy…

  8. BoJim Says:

Stats like that are for losers that need something to do to justify their position.

  9. pick6 Says:

the bucs had 6 games after their bye. i’m not sure the team can claim any adverse effect on their season until they have 10 games behind them. if they win 4 to 6 games, they either weren’t good enough before the bye impacted their rest situation or they let the lack of a bye affect their attitude and preparation more than they should have.

bucs and dolphins got jobbed as far as their playoff ambitions go, but it’s not fair to cite this as a factor in their performance until after thanksgiving

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

For a franchise that has missed the playoffs 31 of 41 seasons, we are the last fans that need to make up excuses.

  11. Todd Webster Says:

We have 9 games to play before week 11. The only change at this point is we have one less game. If they let the lack of a bye week effect them during those 9 games they are not as mentally strong as we thought! IMO, they will rise up against this adversity. Winston seems like that type of guy!

  12. BucTrooper Says:

If the the Patriots game was threatened the NFL would build a new stadium in a bunker in under a week in the closest cornfield to Foxboro.

  13. Wausa Says:

Best thing to do now is just go ahead and tank the season.
Bucs should resign Sefo and have him play this year and let Jameis and the rest of the Bucs stars rest this year and come back ready for 2018 with a top 5 pick.

  14. RayJameisStadium Says:

History gods are always beating us!!!!!

    What are we to do?

    Bo Who… Bo Who

We should just boycott the season!

Oh wait!!! I forgot…. We have:

    Jameis
    Evans
    Jackson
    Humphries
    Godwin
    Howard
    Brate
    McCoy
    Baker
    Ayers
    Spence
    Alexander
    David
    Beckwith
    Ward
    VHIII
    Grimes
    Anger
    Folk
    Coach Koetter
    Smitty

Hmmm……I think we can handle history gods, opponents, refs, Mr. Deflated and BillyCheat!!!!!!!

    Lets Go Bucs!!!!!

  15. PRBucFan Says:

4.3? lol All that means was those teams were terrible ahaha

Also we didn’t have a bye till all the way in week 11 any who

  16. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

As long as we don’t hear this crap come out of any of the bucs leaders ie jameis, then its game on they need to suck it up and play because it is not going to change, do you think the patriots threw in the towel when they lost brady and gronk last year? Cmon, championship teams do their job when called upon, so unless the players are weak minded then the season is gone, but from what I have seen from the HC that is NOT his mentality and neither is it jameis mentality and those 2 can lead the bucs through this season of 16 straight and hopefully 16-18 straight with a bye in week one of the playoffs or before superbowl

  17. Dreambig Says:

And that would be a great example of a really worthless stat plucked out of the air with no surrounding context or information.

  18. Cannonblaster Says:

Why are we trying to make excuses for ourselves? Jameis said it best, “We need to man up and play 16 games, thats it”

  19. NOSBOS Says:

Eric the 99 rams had 300 to 1 odds to win the superbowl that year. My point,in short time they put together and won it all. As far our O not being as good theirs. Well time is about tell. Me,I’ll put ME up there wit Isaac bruce,I’ll put Desean up there wit Torre holt I’ll put Fameis up there wit a Kurt warner no one had any idea would thrive the way he ultimately did. We don’t a Faulk comparison to make right now but my belief is DM wit a carrot hanging out in front will place on par wit that 99ram act bro.

  20. Frank Pillow Says:

Quick question for the Joes, others…what’s the impact of the 1st week bye on D. Martin’s suspension? I just assumed that it’s 3 games, not weeks, meaning he won’t be back until Game 5 now. Can you sanity check that?

  21. Dooshlarue Says:

Yeah we should forfeit the season and ask the government for grief counseling.
Hopefully the NFL will give us a trophy for being brave enough to quit.

Hey crybabies……… don’t forget Ellen is on at 3.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Could we play at least 1 game before folks start the ‘Doom & Gloom’ BS? Life happens … deal with it. Winners don’t need to make excuses.

  23. NOSBOS Says:

There wasn’t a soul around that forsaw them coming the way they did that season.

  24. SCBucsFan Says:

I don’t know why everyone is complaining. It’s a built in excuse and a reason some of you can complain for years which you apparently love to do.

  25. holymoly13 Says:

    Screw the history Gods !

  26. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Excuses are for losers my old football coach used to say! Jameis has the right attitude and will lead this team over adversity. That is the one reason why I think he was destined to be the leader of this team. Go Bucs! I will be there rooting you guys on!!

  27. RayJameisStadium Says:

“Could we play at least 1 game before folks start the ‘Doom & Gloom’ BS? Life happens … deal with it. Winners don’t need to make excuses.”

Word on the street is …..We must keep the illusion of “The Den of Depression” alive until the 5th home game!!!!!!! lol

  28. BurgDweller Says:

This team has a really good vibe going on right now. I feel they can overcome this hurdle with the good leadership they have in place.

  29. mike n Says:

if when your bye week has a great impact on your season, then you weren’t that good to begin with.

  30. NOSBOS Says:

Not to mention they were 4 and 12 the previous season. Pss.

  31. AceofAerospace Says:

Well, my goal is for the team to be 10-0 by the bye week and looking ahead to resting starters soon. Problem solved.

  32. Roy T. Buford Says:

Garbage. Show some nads, guys. The Bucs always seemed to do the impossible, good or bad. Roll with it. Screw history. Meaningless.

  33. TampaTown Says:

This is the point I was trying to make all day yesterday. The game could have been played tomorrow night and all players on both sides would then be home with their families. Because both teams had the same bye week the NFL was lazy and took the path of least resistance. If they didn’t have the same bye week, what would have happened? They would have been forced into a different solution.

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

“The sky is falling…the sky is falling” Henny Penny aka Chicken Little.

    Joe

You are the one who is constantly reminding us that stats can be twisted any which way so let’s look at this one.

12 teams qualify for the NFL playoffs. That’s 37.5% of the league. Ergo all things being equal you would expect 3 teams…or 37.5% of the total of 8 teams to qualify for the playoffs. That’s five teams that would never make it anyway.
So from this exceedingly small sample base BSPN extracted a number that is slightly above what the overall expectations would be without ANY bye disruption.

This is just bogus BSPN fear mongering. Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992 destroying South Florida. The Fins were coming off a mediocre 8-8 season and during the hurricane season they improved to 11-5 and won the AFC East!!!!

(I wish I could remember and give credit to the astute poster who first came up with that factoid the other day…they deserve the credit.)

I wish I had the time of some of these stat nerds…I feel certain as Joe has frequently pointed out I could dig up some stats and make them dance and spin and show the Bucs have a great chance to reach Minny.

If you guys really want to panic…a freaking bye is the least of our worries. Just as possible as that 3% edge for ONE week costing us….is somebody rolling up under #3’s knee and finishing our season!!! If I was going to be a worry wart that’s what would keep me up at night.

We’re fully fueled and on the launch pad! Let’s light this rocket!!!!

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW I’ve never been prouder of JBF posters on a single thread. Well played guys as you all have figured out…excuses are for losers.

  36. Conte Piscateli Says:

Don’t consider the loss of a byte week to be as bad as being the team playing on the short week for a Thursday night game.

  37. Blake_bucsfan Says:

It is what it is. Good teams over come bad situations.

But hey, for anyone curious. Google Miami weather right now. And you’ll see that it’s 90 degrees, partly cloudy, with 7 mph.

This game should have been played today. And the only reason it wasn’t is because the NFL doesn’t want to take ratings away from the Patriots.

    Player safety my balls.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I wonder why no one talks about what having the extra time off now will do to the team. The start of the season when things are not quite settled in. Not gonna be pretty.

And what if we are, say, 7-2 by the time we reach what would have been our Bye week…and the players start losing because they are gassed?

The truth is, no one can tell anyone it won’t (or will) have an adverse effect on the players.

All I know is that the bye weeks are in the CBA and this is a violation.

This sucks. Period. And it doesn’t matter how pretty a face the NFL, Buccaneers or the media tries to put on it…it will still suck. Things are much different than they use to be.

  39. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    7 mph winds***

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We’ll see what people say come the second half of the season.

  41. Eric Says:

Plus we start out with an advantage as our guys will be rested vs. Chicago.

GMC ought to be full strength. Evans too.

    Its a super flimsy excuse.

  42. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Hey Buccaneer Scotty, why don’t you run out there a week from Sunday and find out just what pu$$ies these guys are. Lol. I hate comments like yours. You wouldn’t last five minutes. These guys would put you in the hospital!

  43. Garv Says:

Damn I wish some of us would let this go. It’s DONE! And you know what? NOTHING will have changed until November 19! Well, except for missing the first game and having another week to get to 100% for the season and home opener a week from Sunday against the Bears. Why keep whining NOW? Hell, we have NO IDEA what the situation will be on November 11. #ByeInThePlayoffs!

  44. Joe Says:

This game should have been played today. And the only reason it wasn’t is because the NFL doesn’t want to take ratings away from the Patriots.

Joe is not naive. Pretty sure this was a major factor.

  45. TampaTown Says:

I meant to say game should have been played tonight. It is what it is and all we can do now is move forward and not let it be a reason to bring everyone down. But no team should be at a competitive disadvantage to thirty other teams. Isn’t that kind of the NFL’s job? To make sure that doesn’t happen? When the schedule came out my friends and I were discussing which away games we were going to travel to. Everyone wanted Miami. I said “First week of September? Sure hope there’s not a hurricane.” So we decided on New Orleans and Green Bay instead. Last year when we had two rainouts at our back to back 4pm home games, the NFL said no more 4pm games for the Bucs in September. So here’s an idea. All FL teams have an away game first week of the season going forward. Not hard to figure this one out folks.

  46. TampaTown Says:

We could have played early today 4 or 430 so as not to conflict with the Patriots.

  47. Lion Says:

No excuses – just play football. Most of our players are young and in their 20s, so I’m pretty sure not having a bye week won’t be that big of a deal. This is a mental distraction, not a physical one. It will only affect the team if the players and coaches let it affect them.!

  48. Lion Says:

The players will 10 days between games the Thursday night game and the next game. That is a mini bye in itself.

  49. stpetebucsfan Says:

There is a freaking evacuation order in effect ALREADY for South Beach as well as the Keys.

How would people even get to the games. The gas stations that still have gas have lines of cars…the highways are already jammed…THIS MORNING.

How would the fans and players and officials even get to the stadium?

Here’s a thought…turn off the NFL Net for a bit and watch the Weather Channel.
See what is ACTUALLY HAPPENING on the ground and tell me how folks would get to the Hard Rock.

AGAIN…you guys can continue with your FEELINGS…and preconceived notions…I honestly believed the bye made a giant difference…it simply does not. A 3% edge will probably blow up statistically for us since the game we would have played after that week 11 bye is the Dixie Chicks in Atlanta.
Would have loved to have an extra week to get ready for that game but how many of you honestly penciled in a W against the Falcons on the road?

I’ll be happy to split with them if we hold home field.

  50. K2 Says:

I’m sure that the New England Patriots would not win a game if their open game was cancelled. They would probably just stay home and cry. Would you like to start covering the 2018 NFL draft…now that our season is finished?

  51. Lord Cornelius Says:

Joe is not naive. Pretty sure this was a major factor.”

Yep. In the end taking away the bye = the most profitable decision.

As you’ve said in another post; how the hell do you wait till Tuesday to even talk about contingency plans? Either the NFL is one of the dumbest corporations around when it comes to certain things; or they just wanted to F*ck us the whole time and delayed any official discussions just to make it seem like they had no choice. Bullsh1t.

That means they would have screwed up the whole season and taken 2 games away if not for this bye week option… no way in hell that happens. If the bye week wasn’t an option we’d be playing this week somewhere.

  52. TampaTown Says:

@LordC: Well said. And did I miss something? Did anyone here say the season is over? Or that the players can’t handle it? Or not say that’s life, make the best of it and move forward? No. I didn’t see that either. All Joe said is that the NFL is in the business of having a plan for unforeseen circumstances. So they should have had a plan. THE NFL. It’s not about anything else and no one is saying Hurricane Irma is not serious or potentially devastating. So get off that thread as well. Honestly Joe I don’t know how you put up with posters continually missing the point day in and day out. It has to be frustrating for you both and I thank you for doing it.

  53. DB55 Says:

    Lord

they just wanted to F*ck us the whole time and

It’s def a good ol boys club and the Glaziers are most certainly not in it and neither is Stephen Ross if you catch my drift.

  54. 813bucboi Says:

@db55….I agree….if it were the cowboys or patriots they would’ve figured it out….we know goodell doesn’t like SUH…..could he have it out for jameis as well?….GO BUCS!!!

  55. DB55 Says:

Billionaires do not concern themselves with the thoughts of mere millionaires. No! This is about the owners and who is in or out of the cool kids club.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

You want a bye? Win the NFC, you get a bye.

Having a goals is a good thing.

  57. Rod Munch Says:

Is this going to be the crybaby whiny stuff we have to hear all year now in every game? Tampa gets a bye week, it’s week 1, they get the advantage of playing the Bears who are not coming off a bye.

Also saying the NFL doesn’t have a plan for a cat 5 storm maybe wiping out 2 cities in the same state in week 1 of the season – how outrageous that is, is just flat out dumb. This is what happens when you start nerfing everything so when a kid falls down they don’t “hurt” themselves – then if they go into the real world and fall down like everyone before them they think they’re a victim and want fifty thousand dollars (but will settle for $20).

This is a GAME, it’s not real life, it’s a bunch of men who shower together as adults that make their living by playing with a ball – you can make decisions on the fly if something big happens. This isn’t life or death, it’s entertainment. Also as entertainment, while I don’t personally care about the Dolphins fans, still they already lose a game to be played in London meaning they only have 7 home dates available. If you care about ‘fairness’ what about the season ticket holders of the Dolphins who would lose another home game from the schedule. I’m not talking money, I’m talking about as a form of entertainment for the people that pay to see it. If this was the idea in Tampa, that we’d play week 1 somewhere else and lose a home game all the talk would be about how that is the excuse for not making the playoffs.

Stop with the excuses and grow a set ladies.

  58. TampaTown Says:

@ Rod: You’re going off on your own personal tangent. Who is whining or making excuses? Again, I don’t see any of that from anybody here but you. No one disagrees with what you are saying but is seems like you wish they were. It’s just not what anybody is talking about. The NFL has contingency plans for an entire team being wiped out in a plane crash (God forbid) and a terrorist attack on a Stadium (God forbid) so is it that much of a stretch to have a plan in place for an alternate playing site? Even if it’s a high school stadium in the middle of the state? Come on. Give me a break.

  59. Rod Munch Says:

TT – Where is the plan for a plane crash – I’ve never seen that. As for a terrorist attack that is local law enforcement. If people aren’t already complaining about this – which I seem to see over and over and over again – then great, I am dyslexic so maybe I’m reading their complaining backwards or something.

Anywho the NFL did have a plan – move the game up, which was nixed by the state, then the choice was move the game to week 11 or play somewhere else. As Joe pointed out yesterday players from both teams didn’t want to travel and preferred to play over the bye week.

Anywho they get a bye week – it’s this week. As for traveling – if the storm trends west again, which it is now doing, it’s goijg to be Tampa getting nailed harder than Miami and who is to say TIA would be open even by Monday or Tuesday if it was a neutral site game in Pennsylvania?

Both teams had a bye and it makes perfect sense to use that bye the way they’re doing.

  60. Wesley Says:

    Season is over.

  61. René Says:

8 is not a good sample size to make any statistics you would need at least 30 so nothing here really
