“I’ve Just Seen The Same Guy”

August 28th, 2017

Vernon Hargreaves

A Buccaneers superstar threw a pile of cold water on all this talk about a new and improved Vernon Hargreaves.

The comment came from a player who knows what he’s watching. That’s cornerback Brent Grimes, who entered the NFL in 2006, then spent time in NFL Europe and has seen plenty during his Pro Bowl career.

So what’s different this season about Hargreaves, Brent?

“Nothing really. I’ve just seen the same guy,” Grimes told Joe. “You see more things, after year of experience and a year of learning, and now he can apply the stuff that he’s learned in this training camp and carry it on to the season. But he’s the same guy, same energy, same confidence. So now he’ll have a year of experience beyond that and he’ll play even better.”

Interesting take by Grimes, clashing a bit with coaches advising Hargreaves it’s his year to get much more aggressive.

Hargreaves just turned 22 and has two preseason interceptions. It’s a great sign, though he hasn’t shown a lot of consistency yet.

Look for him to get plenty of work on opening day, as teams will continue to test Hargreaves until Grimes shows signs of age.

Hes fine. It takes about 3 years before an NFL cornerback really has the knowledge and mental agility to excell at the game.
Ronde Barber has stated, during a broadcast, that it took him”About two and a
Half years to know what I was doing”.
    Thats always the case.
The bad part is- you gotta let them play. Preferrably, you have a veteran CB in front of them, so that they gradually get thrown in the fire.
    Hargreaves didnt have that luxury.

And Grimes isnt trashing him- hes telling the truth.
Only fans expect him to show up, wearing a red cape and an “S” on his chest- just because hes starting year 2.
He should be better. He was really bad last year. Rookies usually are.
Hopefully, he keeps making gradual progress.

I’m a little confused how this is your take away from Grimes’ quote? He said: “…and now he can apply the stuff that he’s learned in this training camp and carry it on to the season. But he’s the same guy, same energy, same confidence. So now he’ll have a year of experience beyond that and he’ll play even better.

Doesn’t really sound like throwing cold water to me.

  3. Mitch Says:

I am with “unbelievable” on this one. It is an odd take, Joe, from what appears to be an endorsement for Vernon and his maturity that has come with the on-field experience.

  4. Moron Says:

Mitch and unbelievable are spot on … Joe, you ought to know better than to extrapolate that first paragraph out of what is a wholly unambiguous quote about Vern’s maturity level and experience. We expect more out of you than hot takes.

  5. lowlife Says:

Careful Joe(s?), might strain your back reaching like that.

  6. BKNYfootballhead Says:

Joe peddling “Fake news”. I kid…I kid.

  7. JAB83 Says:

Its a PUN (play on words) guys. Cold Water, Matty Ice get it…

    ME EITHER!!!

Cold water needs to be thrown on Joe for trying to start a fire storm of worry about a guy who is clearly only getting better and his coaches and teammates see the maturation equally.

I will give you that it was expressed it somewhat different by Grimes vs Coaches.

Cold thrown on the Coaches may be more appropriate?

  8. BadHomebre Says:

I agree w/unbelievable. He is complementing VHIII, not insulting him in any way. He saying he will be the same aggressive and energetic player we saw last year, but even better w/experience.

  9. JAB83 Says:

Actually that would be a true statement if he said Cold Water thrown on the Coaches…

But that don’t drive traffic as well… So I get it now…. LOL…. Not funny!!!

  10. JAB83 Says:

Wait I’m a dumb ask… Classic example of what ASSUMING does to people!!!

  11. Scottasuarus Says:

I fell for it. I clicked. What a bogus story. If I want fake news I’ll click on CNN.
Fascinating how you negative clowns took this to be a negative story on Hargreaves. Great sociological study, and/or a sad commentary on reading skills.– Joe

  12. JAB83 Says:

Feel free to moderate my comments OFF the board Joe… I know you have to moderate everything I say for reasons we can not say. So you can go ahead and “pull it”.

    Or not whatever… LMAO…

[JAB83: Joe will type this explanation for the final time. If you don’t want to understand, that’s your issue — or should Joe just not fish out your comments from moderation? Something in the spam filter is flagging your comments. That tells Joe either you are using a naughty IP address which was previously tagged for abuse, or there is something on your end that is causing the filter to be triggered — perhaps you use your computer to spam other sites and your IP was recorded as spam elsewhere? Joe is not trying to be an arse, he’s trying to help. Joe does not know how to write programming software so unless you contact a programmer for WordPress, this will continue. If it irks you enough, you can always try a different computer/IP address/e-mail address/username. This is not in any way a personal agenda. You think Joe enjoys digging all of our comments out of moderation? Joe has much bigger and better things to do with his daily routine. Honestly, of the 100 issues Joe has to worry about keeping this site flowing, No. 99 might be why a commenter’s replies always fall into moderation. Maybe not even that high. Joe has explained how this works before and has offered advice before as well as now how you might be able to correct this for future use. — Joe]

  13. Kobe Faker Says:

Not a big fan of VH3

Will never pocess the quickness to recover or jump routes with top wrs

No doubt it is a tough position and very little amount of elite #1 corners in the league

Will be a avg solid #2 corner for the next +10 years

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Well Kobe for every Ronde Barber there’s a Brain Kelly. You need ATLEAST 2 corners so if he’s 1 or 2 it doesn’t matter if he plays for a decade.

  15. Piratic Says:

I’ll remind everyone that the Joes are former newspaper guys.

They learned how to pick and choose their headlines a long time ago.

Divisiveness is a (unspoken) fundamental tenet of journalism; there is no stopping it.

Get comfortable, because Joe isn’t going to change, regardless of how insidious it might be.

  16. Pickgrin Says:

Hargreaves should have a good Sophomore season. Hope Ryan Smith gets up to speed quickly – that’s a much bigger concern than VH3’s progress which is obvious.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

try teaching that spin move to one of the DE’s joe….sounds like grimes was speaking highly of VHG……GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Joe Says:

Divisiveness is a (unspoken) fundamental tenet of journalism; there is no stopping it.

Won’t go that far. But will quickly explain the fundamentals of headlines:

A headline is like a photo. The purpose is to grab a reader’s attention and draw him/her into the story. No more sinister than that.

  19. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Yeah I don’t get how you got your take out of this. Another nothing story for clicks. U don’t even believe what u wrote. Ur just trying to get the clicks like we blame all the main stream media for doing. SMH

  20. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I’m not one to jump on the dogpile, but, the author’s take and the quote I read from Grimes seem…..divergent.

  21. Piratic Says:

@Joe: I understand that’s how it’s explained in Journalism 101, but I WILL go that far: Divisiveness is a currency that journalists use to divide and conquer. It is the proverbial low-hanging fruit, and as such it is used to fragmentize, rather than unify.

As to your photo analogy: Typically, photos are not manipulated so as to mislead, whereas a quote (for example) can be taken out of context, simply to “draw him/her into the story.”

  22. BucDaddy82 Says:

This is a good endorsement from Grimes. not cold water. click bait. fake news. 35 year Bucs fan done with this website. see ya.

  23. Kobe Faker Says:

    Agree ron

Need 2 and maybe 4 corners with all these 3 wr sets lol

With all the top high school athletes wanting to be recievers now days…6 3 with 4.4 speed and ridiculous hands

You add all the rules where defenders cant do and the nfl/tv wants offense offense

Every corner gets smoked and look bad…

If vh3 does actually develop to last year grimes level (i dont think he can)…..vh3/grimes can cover alot of 2017 defenses sins/warts

  24. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Don’t let the stick hit you on the arse while you try to chastise the # 1 Bucs site on the planet! Tchau!!

  25. Joe Says:

    Piratic:

Joe actually has a journalism degree, aced a class in “Journalism Ethics” and worked in many newsrooms. Joe can honestly say he has never, ever heard the word “divisiveness” used to describe strategies in covering stories. Never.

“Objectivity?” Yes. No one is Spock but one should strive for objectivity. “Accuracy?” Now that’s a tenant. One cannot be Spock, again, but you strive for accuracy.

Joe has a very poor attitude to what folks now consider “journalism.” It’s more advocacy than anything. The only people who think divisiveness is a core attribute in journalism have neither studied journalism nor practiced journalism.

Also, have never, ever heard an editor remotely even try to push “divide and conquer.” Never. This sounds more like Saul Alinsky.

Please don’t try to confuse talk radio for journalism.

  26. cmurda Says:

I see what you did here Joe. Well done sir.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Stoked to see what Vernon does for us this year. I thought he had a fantastic rookie campaign, can’t say the same for many first round CBs.

When all the dust settles I believe the Hargreaves pick will be one of the most underrated in a long list of successful Licht draft choices.

  28. ME13 Says:

Let’s just send 2 first rd picks to Gaints for JPP !! An that will fix our DE pass rush !! He in his prime an he a home town boy !! We got the cap space

  29. JimmyJack Says:

They gotta do something ME13. Good teams will destroy us if our D-line plays as bad as they did against the Browns.

Hoping we are a playoff team and then to see our Line get owned by the Browns felt like a kick to the teeth.

  30. LargoBuc Says:

Im confident the VH3 will get it. Not every young corner can be Marcus Peters. Who knows, perhaps Vernon will have a breakout sophmore season of his own? The kid has a nose for the ball always flying to the ball carrier trying to get in on every play. Not a bad foundation to build upon IMO.

  31. Dave Pear Says:

    Joe,
You have a journalism degree and yet you say “pile of cold water?”
I’m pretty sure water doesn’t come in piles.
Buckets maybe. Cup, glass, pint, pitcher etc… But not pile.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

I saw Hargreaves tackle that massive TE short of the chains Sat Night. Plays like those are very meaningful and tend to be forgotten.

The dude is an awesome tackler and a warm welcome to the Bucs who have gone through many years where poor tackling directly lead to oodles and oodles of losses and heartburn

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Pile of water makes perfect cents. Don’t be a nerd.

  34. BuccaneEric75 Says:

This was an endorsement by Grimes, not a slight. When he said that he sees the same guy, he said he saw the same energy and confidence, but now he has experience. I don’t see how anyone could read what he said about Vernon and take it negative. I don’t get it. Please explain.

  35. Greg Says:

Lost me at superstar cornerback….we don’t have one…just one who’s wife is pottymouthed trash.

  36. InJameisWeTrust Says:

    Nothing-Burger here

  37. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

LOL Joe, it is hilarious when these posters think you are individually going in and moderating their comments. Seriously JAB and the others that have made similar statemtents….just think about it for a second and I am sure it will click! SMH!
