“Amazing How He Can Go Up And Make Contested Catches”

August 10th, 2017

Rookie Chris Godwin could spark serious change

Joe continues to smell significant change coming to the Buccaneers’ offense.

The way Dirk Koetter offered such big-time praise for receiver Chris Godwin yesterday (and on other days), and the fact Koetter is laser focused on getting the best players on the field, it seems the Bucs will be very busy lining up in three- and four-receiver sets this season.

Godwin, of course, is Tampa Bay’s rookie third-round pick.

And, so far, everything is pointing to the Godwin pick as the one that could help cement a gargantuan new contract for general manager Jason Licht, the architect of the historic grand slam.

There is everything to like about Godwin’s spring/summer performance and approach. And Koetter poured on the love yesterday during his interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Koetter made the Roddy White comparison again.

“He plays big. He’s physical. He’s serious about ball. He’s a great competitor, really amazing how he can go up and make contested catches,” Koetter said.

One guy on the Bucs says “amazing” all the time, and that’s America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. But Koetter rarely drops that “A” word.

If Koetter really believes Godwin is an “amazing” receiving talent, then he surely has to get him on the field quite a bit. Right? And Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson and the dynamic tight ends have to eat, too.

Joe can almost see the drool on Jaqcuizz Rodgers chin when he sees six- and seven-man defensive fronts to run against.

He’ll be a household name in no time. Mark it down.

    Team Licht

  3. Rod Munch Says:

Just keep your head level – keep in mind that outside of that amazing 2014 draft class most NFL rookie WR’s don’t go out there day 1 and light it up. Same thing for TE’s. Anywho I think we all thought he’d be a #3 WR and it’s good he’s going to be just that – and being #3 behind Evans and DJax isn’t a bad thing at all. Also, hate to remind people of this, DJax has a long history of injuries and there isn’t any way I expect him to play 16 games this year – I really really hope he proves me wrong and feel free to call me whatever you want if he does, it will be a verbal beating worth taking.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Told ya they were going to have a hard time keeping Godwin off the field his rookie year!

Licht should get plenty of credit – but lets be honest, Howard falling to 19 and Godwin falling to pick #84 was just lucky. Hey – we were due. Its not the Buccaneers fault all the other GMs around the league were not smart enough to snatch these obvious talents up sooner.

But its been far from all “luck” in Licht’s 3 1/2 years as GM of this team.

I’ve been saying since we drafted him that Godwin has 1st round talent.

So following that thought – Licht said in an interview last year that the Bucs had all 4 of the first 4 picks from the 2015 draft (Winston, D.Smith, Marpet and Kwon) rated as 1st round talents. He even specified that Kwon (picked at #124) was the 28th player on the Bucs Big Board.

2016 picks Hargreaves and Spence were both rated as 1st round talents as well.

OJ Howard (obviously) and Godwin are 2 more 1st round talents to add to the tally.

Point being – Jason Licht has drafted EIGHT 1st round talents in the last 3 drafts.

If our GM keeps this up for a couple more drafts – this team will be unstoppable and likely become a true dynasty if the salary cap can be managed properly.

Need me some of those shades Gruden was talking about years ago because the foreseeable future of this franchise is very bright.

  5. BigMacAttack Says:

This guy is special. Steal of the draft. Beckwith will also be great. May end up being one of the best draft classes ever for the Bucs, but may take a couple years to realize full potential. That is all.

  6. biff barker Says:

    Nice writeup Pickgrin.

Best thing of all is we have coaching that will utilize these individual talents instead of shoe horning them into a system.

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

Allen robinson is the reciever godwin replaced in penn state

robinson is alittle bigger but godwin is faster

the 50k stadiums wont bother godwin cause he is used to playing over 100k at pennstate, ostate and ann arbor

we have #1 reciever talent in Godwin

robinson is going to make 14 milly next year

“When the Bucs are in yearly contention of superbowls in a few years, Godwin will be averaging 85-100 catches and the offense will be going thru Godwin”

“Godwin is Rashad Greene on steroids”

    Kobe Faker

    We got our Nittany Lion!!

    Long Live

    Joe Jurevicous!!!

He is one of the main reasons we got to the Super Bowl!!

    Who else loves Joe Jurevicious???

  9. Pa Privateer Says:

    @Joe

I never thought we would have a Bucs conversation/article about having too many weapons……it is kinda a weird feeling

  10. Bucsfanman Says:

    ^^^It is rather strange Privateer!

  11. shouldhavedraftedeifert Says:

    @teacherman777 heyooooooo!

  12. BigHogHaynes Says:

At times we should see Chris Godwin in the slot!! I’ll have my eyes on that 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Reciever spots….maybe it’s time to move on from Hump?!!

  13. Wausa Says:

If he is as good as it appears he is going to be then it is pretty clear the Bucs should have the best receivers/Tight Ends in the NFL.

Jason Licht has turned a weakness into a significant strength in just one offseason.

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

Yes!!! The return of DK’s 4 vertical!

Again as a kid who grew up watching Daryle “The Mad Bomber” LaMonica…and guys like Biletnikoff and Alworth….I’m just beyond excited.

I truly appreciate great defense…but nothing entertains me more than the QUICK SIX!!! It’s a deadly play. Fires up the fans or deflates them on the road.

I remember watching a youtube on #3 when he was still at FSU when some kids bet him he couldn’t throw it over a building (I think Nole fans can correct me).
Nobody thought he could do it including me….but then…he chucks it over the high obstacle.

#3 throws great on the run….he has a cannon arm..and now with the weapons..let’s not just win..let’s be the trend setting team that buries the formula used so successfully by Brady and all those colleges running the spread.

4 vertical baby and we’re coming after your end zone on any given snap from anywhere on the field!!!

  15. Dreambig Says:

The great part is with the OJ Howard pick and DJax, everyone is talking about those guys. As a third round pick, Godwin is flying a bit under the radar. Thats not going to last long, but until other teams catch on, he is going to do some damage!

  16. Pickgrin Says:

    Wausa Says:
“Jason Licht has turned a weakness into a significant strength in just one offseason.”

    Again!

Did it with Oline in 2015, CBs in 2016 and now “WeaponsforWinston” in 2017.

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

    Dont sleep on ME

Ive seen 5-6 videos (hard knocks and practice) running that 10-15 yard crossing patterns. starting at 1 end and going across the other end against the grain/flow of traffic. highly probable and consistent pass plays. 6 5 230lbs running after catch is non defensible

I havent seen that sharp cutting and fake jab step on the line in 4 years

We now have DJAX, Godwin, and OJ but…

Kobe thinks ME is going to reach another level this year

  18. JimmyJack Says:

Still think we see a good dose of Hump this year. He and Winston have great chemistry and it pays off a lot of the time when we need a key 1st down.

Hump does a lot of the grunt work on offense and he’s very good at it. From what I hear from Goodwin he is a different type of receiver all together.

  19. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Jimmyjack

Exactly. Hump isn’t going anywhere. He’s the only shifty small slot WR type we really have and perfect in the 3/4 role depending on downs & distance

  20. CalBucsFan Says:

Sounds like there won’t be enough footballs to go around, nice problem to have too!

  21. JimmyJack Says:

If Goodwin does live up to the “Kenny Bell level” hype he should get plenty of snaps spelling Djax. He and Hump can also play a 3(a) 3(b) receiver role depending on the game situation.

Sometimes have the best player on the field doesn’t mean most pure talent. It can simply mean that the player is the best man for the job.

  22. webster Says:

    Godwin = anquan boldin

  23. BucEmUo Says:

I see Godwin spelling djax more than I do hump….or maybe an even split. May e Godwin gets equal snaps with both hump and desean rotating between the two of them when theyre not all on the field.

  24. SOEbuc Says:

This guys gives us so many more options for plays to write up. He can play slot or outside. Evans, DJax, Hump, and Godwin. Anyone needs a breather or gets injured, we got this guy. There is no doubt we have the best WR/receiving corps in the NFL. Some people mention other teams, they likely don’t know about Godwin yet cus if they did they would know it’s a no brainer. Anyone trying to say this guy could be a Kenny Bell just makes me LMFAO. This dude’s legit.

  25. Dewey Selmon Says:

When we get into the red zone i dont see how anyone can stop a 4 wide, Evans, Howard, Brate, Godwin. When not in the redzode Hump catches everything underneath and chews up yards. Evans, Djax, Hump. Howard

  26. Rrsrq Says:

Let’s get this ship moving, can’t wait

  27. Mikadeemas Says:

Add rodmuncher to the negative A hole list. Oh, let ME be the one to tell you DJax might get hurt and OJ might not make HOF this year, meanwhile I’ll be hanging with Dallas buc, tmaxipad, and the rest of the bummer club. Y’all sucks, but hey, GOBUCS!!!!

  28. RayJameisStadium Says:

    @ teacherman777

    # 83 JJ back in the day….. yeah! took Philly to school!!!

    Godwin will rock Ray Jay!!!

  29. JimmyJack Says:

SOE has a big ole hole in his brewsky. Half of the guys you’re touting as the best receiving Corp in the whole league have never done a darn thing here in Tampa.

I think they have a chance to be the best but I got no love for Desean unless he breaks an 80 harder on Thurs. Night. If he doesn’t deliver he’s dead to me.

  30. feelthepewterpower Says:

    Chris Godwin is a Godsend.

  31. orlbucfan Says:

@JimmyJack, ME13 and Hump are already first team/great receivers. Preseason will show us how the others pan out. BTW, are you an actual Bucs fan or a troll? Haven’t seen you around until now.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Orlando, your question is dumb but I’m a Bucs fan. I like Hump a lot but could you please share a few details why you are calling him great? I couldn’t disagree more.

Other then that I agree with you that the games will answer the questions about how great our receivers are. Proclaiming we are the best in the league now is just ridiculous but ridiculous proclamations run rampant on this site.

  33. SB Says:

Awesome Post as always Pick! Keep up the good work.

  34. BadHombre Says:

Sly Doug Martin diss there at the end.

  35. webster Says:

    @ jimmy jack

You say posters make ridiculous comments on this site yet you say djax is dead 2 you if he does not break off a 80 yarder? If thats not ridiculous then what is?
