Day 6 Training Camp Practice Notes & Nuggets
August 3rd, 2017
A cool, cloudy rain-free summer day was the setting for Day 6 of training camp, the first back-to-back day in pads. Joe patrolled the field and took plenty of notes. Enjoy!
*Fan favorite Chris Conte with a very early house call to start the day. Joe couldn’t see who fired the rock. Ryan Fitzpatrick was taking snaps with first team.
*Scorpions! Jason Licht must have hijacked the tunes.
*Peyton Barber tries to run around left edge with the threes and is crunched. First real pop of the pads heard this training.
*Hip Hop Hooray!
*Real respects real: O.J. Howard puts a stutter/double move on Brent Grimes that leaves Grimes standing by himself along the right sidelines. Howard is WIDE open for a big gain. Grimes seemd to wave at Howard to acknowledge the rookie for putting a Pro Bowl move on him.
*11-on-11 is back. Incomplete Jameis over the middle. Doug Martin sweep right, tough to tell what’s a hole and what’s guys avoiding (as instructed) a tackle-to-the-ground hit.
*Low shotgun snap from Marpet. Jameis is on target with a hard slant to Mike Evans but Vernon Hargreaves punches it out. Sweet play.
*Sharp connection. Ryan Fitzpatrick to Cameron Brate over the middle.
*Lots of daylight for Charles Sims around left end for a nice gain with the twos. Speed obvious.
*Big gain. 20 yards. It’s Jameis to Mike Evans down the left side. Jameis nails him with zip.
*O.J. Howard seemed to be in the shadows last couple of days. Not today. Man, Howard and Noah Spence is one physical battle.
*Jameis to Humphries for 15 yards over the middle. Crowd likes that one. Rudy!
*Lot of zip on Fitzpatrick’s throws today. Much better look.
*The CFL legend Derel Walker gets open and makes the catch. This time, he didn’t have the ball punched out or stripped.
*11-on-11 resumes
*GMC practicing like a wild beast today. He would have splashed Jameis if he didn’t have the orange jersey. All practice long GMC was clowning Bucs offensive linemen. Kevin Pamphile on this play.
*Jameis to Humphries. It’s a juggle drop with Javien Elliott on his back.
*Blitz! Robert McClain would have sacked Jameis.
*No room for Doug Martin running wide left.
*Bucs receivers having a sudden case of the dropsies.
*Third-team look. Ryan Griffin throws short to the left sideline for running back Blake Sims. Camp mean linebacker Cameron Lynch with a superior strip of the ball which goes out of bounds.
Joel Glazer and Jason Licht in an intense-looking conversation on the sidelines for 10 minutes or so.
*Hard Knocks is all up in a long conversation between Robert Ayers and Doug Martin, and neither player seems to care one bit, as if they’re not there. They’re on the bench jawing with a microphone overhead and the cameras very visible.
*Brent Grimes fields a punt with the punt return team. There is no live run back, but Grimes catches the rock, does a neat jump spin moves and explodes. Would be fun to see him get a shot, tough he’s way too valuable for that.
*7-on-7 work: Jameis comes out razor sharp on a mid-range throw to Evans, followed by a laser to Josh Huff.
*Robert McClain goes step-for-step with the Stampeder (Donteea Dye) on a bomb from Fitzpatrick and breaks up the pass. McClain was upset he didn’t get the pick. The veteran cornerback has had a very strong camp.
*Kendall Beckwith brings the wood and blows off Huff’s helmet after a completed pass from Jameis.
*Nice toe-tap on the right side by DeSean Jackson. Keith Tandy in coverage. (Can anyone cover this guy?) 20 yard pass from Jameis.
*Precision from Jameis to Brate with DeVante Bond trailing.

Sounds like it will be very difficult to keep Rudy off the field this season.

Can a second tier safety signed for the league minimum cover a premier deep threat? Was that a rhetorical question, Joe?
Mine was.

Joel Glazer and Jason Licht in an intense-looking conversation on the sidelines for 10 minutes or so.
I am here today as well joe. The conversation as I overheard it went like this –
Joel: Instead of rocking our checkbook like a hurricane, you need fix that o-line I call a zoo.
Jason: Yes Mr. Glazer Sir.
Joel: Instead of the scorps it looks like they need some Metallica and Slayer.
Jason: Yes Mr. Glazer Sir, I do apologize.
Joel: This O-line looks like Rosie O’donnels bathroom after she hit an all you can eat buffet.
Jason: You are so right Mr. Glazer it will not happen again…..can I get another 20 mill so I can get some O-line help, please sir.
Joel: What did you do with the last 100 mill? Oh never mind,, here take my American Express.
Jason: Thank you Mr. Glazer, thank you

I haven’t heard much from Jude, any insights on how he has been playing?
August 3rd, 2017 at 1:01 pm
I’m rooting for blake sims to make the team…..longshot, but I hope so.

That should give you a hint. If you want to be noticed in training camp, got to flash.
Not suggesting he is practicing badly, just not flashing for folks without the luxury of a DVR rewind to notice.

Seems like the oline is getting worked….GO BUCS!!!!

Agreed. I’m really hoping that it’s this d-line that’s turning into an elite and not this o-line just completely falling off cus I’ve heard too many camp notes so far that say Jameis would’ve been creamed if he wasn’t wearing orange.

Kendall Beckwith knockin heads off. Lovin it 🙂
August 3rd, 2017 at 2:37 pm
Seems like O-line still lacking in pass protection.
August 3rd, 2017 at 2:55 pm
Gawd I would pay to see Spawn and Oj go at it man.
August 3rd, 2017 at 2:56 pm
I saw mention of the low snap, otherwise has Marpet been doing ok with the new snapping duties?
August 3rd, 2017 at 2:58 pm
So like AP,Gurley and Nelson Beckwith been sprinkled with that acl magic repair juice. Crackin heads like in his YouTube video I see. Him and Kwon gone merk somebody.

It’s great to see the defense making plays. I still remember how Josh McCown was completing everything in practice and when the season started we found out that our Defense just sucked and the Offense wasn’t any better.

“Joel Glazer and Jason Licht in an intense-looking conversation on the sidelines for 10 minutes or so.”
Joel: If we don’t make the playoffs this year, Jon said he’ll come get us to the promise land.
Jason: Don’t you dare give up on Dirk…sir.
August 3rd, 2017 at 3:31 pm
I am reminded of the pre-season with McCown and everything we saw looked like the D was just terriffic in practice, the O looked lost.
Then we went to JAX in week#1 preseason and the offense was far worse then we realized. Hoping this is not the case but with a suspect O-Line and no true bell cow running back, this could be rough sledding.

I have not been to any practices. Thought I would be but right when camp started, life got unexpectedly busy.
That said, solely from what I have read, I have these observation:
Kendall Beckwith might just steal a roster spot. From what I here, he has been lights out. He will probably make the team as a second…but will likely earn a starting role during the season.
Derel Walker has been getting open and making almost all of his catches (with only a couple drops), but the ball has been stripped AFTER the catch. Easy fix. Martin had the same issue for a season. But it sounds like he’s an Ike Hilliard type…reliable to catch, maybe not yards after. Still, Hilliard was invaluable. Keyshawn was a position WR too if I recall. The fact that Walker is getting open means he has at least a little speed. (If anyone who has been going to camp has taken note of him, please tell me your thoughts)
Marpet is still learning. He’s had a couple bad snaps, but that’s to be expected. First training camp at center. I would rather him make those mistakes now and address them than during the season. Rain games might be an issue though.
Over all, I think the offensive line is becoming a best unit. They are improving from day to day. Sweezy seems to be turning out to be a great investment.
DeSean Jackson is sounding supernatural. I don’t know if this is because of spin or the truth, but I like it. Now, I DID say Walker would have more yards than him by the end of the season. I’m still sticking to my guns on that.
The defense seems to be striving to become the #1 defense in the nfl. GMC is following through on his words, which must bug TMax to no end.

bonzai—please keep posting….you make up for Bucs Egotist filling the comment section with crap…sadly nobody can make up for the waste of my life tmax has brought on

Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Their is one unasked question from last year!!!!!! And I wish Joe or someone would ask about the Tackles!!!!!! They were both in the top 10 most penalized players in the league!!!!!! I would love to hear Joe ask Head Coach Koetter what steps and measures are they taking to correct this problem!!!!!!!!!!! For some reasone DS76 is a taboo subject that Joe will not talk about!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The man, the myth, the legend, “Fan Favorite Chris Conte”
August 3rd, 2017 at 4:21 pm
Joel is still upset over using a 2nd round pick on Aguayo.
August 3rd, 2017 at 7:47 pm
Oh so the consensus is that the oline is questionable? Okay, just checking I could have sworn a month ago I didn’t know what I was talking about. I get that a lot around here then boom those who were once blind can now see. Smdh 🤦♂️
August 3rd, 2017 at 7:48 pm
Pick
That was actually pretty funny.
August 3rd, 2017 at 8:22 pm
Lol at beckwith “stealing a roster spot”. He’s a 3rd round pick. As long as he doesn’t murder any1 I bet my house he makes the roster
August 3rd, 2017 at 9:29 pm
Pickgrin, that was the best thing I’ve read in a long time!
