Brutal Bears Debut For Mike Glennon

August 11th, 2017

Four-series fail

There was Joe last night, parked on the couch at 8 p.m. with a full belly and dreams of ice cold beer flowing at Abe’s Place.

About 20 minutes later, Joe wondered whether the Hard Knocks cameras would catch a Buccaneer saying, “I can’t believe Jason Licht offered this guy in the neighborhood of $8 million a year to back up Jameis.

Yes, Mike Glennon was that bad. Brutal.

He didn’t look the part in the face of a nasty Broncos pass rush. Ironically, he looked a lot like America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, did last season against Denver.

Jameis fired a nasty, forced interception to Aqib Talib during his opening series against Denver in 2016. Jameis came back with a scoring drive to tie the game at 7. But that was it. Ballgame. The Broncos won 27-7 and Jameis finished an ugly 17-for-35 for 179 yards with two picks. And that was with Vincent Jackson still on the field as an alleged weapon.

Last night was the Bears-Broncos, 2017 preseason debut on NFL Network, and the Bucs’ former “quarterback of the future,” Glennon, was starting for Chicago.

Glennon opened 0-for-3 with a pick-6. He finished 2-for-8 for just 20 yards — in four offensive series. The quarterback rating? Zero, which is awfully hard to do.

Later, when Joe needs a laugh, Joe will check out a couple of Bears blogs to read the freakout.

Oh, Joe almost forgot, Glennon looked like his nimble self when he had a shot to dive on a fumble. And Glennon very much had an I’m-not-a-leader-look about him.

Rough night, and Joe hopes Glennon bounces back. But damn, perhaps the only guy smiling in Illinois was Lovie Smith.

Here’s his throw into triple coverage, resulting in a pick 6:

  2. BuccoDav Says:

Why would you dive on a loose ball in the preseason? It’s not like it’s the Super Bowl, right Cam?

  3. NewTampaChris Says:

Trubisky looked pretty good, though he didn’t go against the ones. Tough position for the Bears — paid one guy big bucks, but traded up to take the other guy at #2 overall.

  4. bucsfaninchina Says:

One year guaranteed for Glennon. If you were to extrapolate what happened last night across the rest of the season he will be holding a clipboard for a different team next year.

  5. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I said it numerous times prior to the draft and I will say it again. He should have taken that backup money and he could have spent a decade on the bench without being exposed. He will be out of the league soon and could have made more money over the long haul riding the pine. Having said that, I am glad we are not counting on that guy to save the day if Jamies gets hurt.

  6. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Yup, Mike Glennon is still at virtually the same skill level he’s been at since his rookie year. He’s serviceable at best when there isn’t pressure in his face. But the second there is, he turn beat red and loses any and all composure. Ryan Pace is a dingus for giving him that contract.

Another not so hot start for a player in their first preseason game? Why that would be none other than Mr. Dalvin Cook. Who amassed a total of 13 yards on 5 carries and zero TD’s. For those not so hot at math that’s 2.6 ypc average.

  7. redhotcheeto Says:

Fox saying it was because he went against the 1s and they are a good defense is just crazy talk. He’s a seasoned vet, no excuse, none. He’s just not good. Should have stayed in Tampa Glennon!

  8. orlbucfan Says:

Good luck to Mike Glennon. Shame cos he’s starting on another rotten team.

  9. R.O. Says:

Can you say overreaction. Preseason means nothing. Just like when everyone overreacted to the Bucs beating Atl in game #1 2016. And will overreact if we lose to MIA in week 1 this year. Judge a Player on 8 passes in the preseason. Not saying MG8 is an All Pro. But neither are any of his WRs.

  10. JonBuc Says:

So, so glad Bears bid against only themselves to get Glennon. The Bucs needed Shiartano’s boy outta there…a remnant reminder of bad Buc football. Just hope he plays against the Bucs at this point and certainly don’t want his back in a Buc uniform next season.

  11. Jeagan1999 Says:

Still a little early for Bears fans to freak out, but it was a horrible decision for Glennon….especially when he had a guy wide open running across the middle of the field.

  12. D-Rome Says:

I already did. I laughed. It reminded me of the Freeman vs. Glennon debate. Trubisky is not the answer there either.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

Licht and the Bucs dodged a Bullet by Glennon turning down that alleged 8 million per year contract. The question is what’s next for mr glennon. Insurance, radio or I hear Enterprise Rent A Car has a great management training program with benefits.

  14. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Glennon got $18.5 million guaranteed. I doubt there will be any rental car jobs in his future. He doesn’t look like the type to blow his money. Although, he should buy his agent a Rolex or something nice like that.

Pretty sure he’s set for life. That doesn’t even include easy money being a backup for another 5 or so years somewhere else.

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

I feel bad for the kid. Maybe it’s just a hiccup and he bounces back. It is preseason after all.
That said, he did get paid a king’s ransom so my sympathy does only go so far!

  16. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Why that would be none other than Mr. Dalvin Cook. Who amassed a total of 13 yards on 5 carries and zero TD’s. For those not so hot at math that’s 2.6 ypc average.”

5 carries is a really small sample; and he also had 40 yards receiving on 4 targets. All it’d take is one 15 yard run and he’d be at 6 carries for ~ 30 yards or almost 5 YPC.

Go look at the box scores and you will see that many RBs average look way worse when you take their longest splash run away:

    Fournette: 9 carries for 31 yards; or 8 for 25 yards A(~ 3 YPC)
McCaffery: 7 carries for 33 yards (almost 5 YPC); or 6 carries for 21 yards (3.5 YPC)
    D Forman: 9 carries 76 yards (8 YPC) or 8 carries for 35 yards (4.3 YPC)
    A Kamara: 4 carries 35 yards (9 YPC); or 3 carries 13 yards (4 YPC)

  17. Blake_bucsfan Says:

LC why would you take their longest run away tho? Those yards were earned in reality, they aren’t phantom runs, so count them to the real average.

I’m aware it’s just a meaningless preseason game.

  18. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Just having a bit of fun mate.

  19. Mike Says:

    He’s getting paid

  20. BoJim Says:

    Mike will be fine.

  21. Buc50 Says:

“He should have gotten a chance here in Tampa instead of drafting a QB” – Glennon Mob

  22. Robert Says:

    yeah, but did anyone get r a p e d ?

  23. buc15 Says:

in 2 years Glennon will be competing with Griffin for our backup QB spot

  24. Kobe Faker Says:

“Neck, can never be a face of a franchise with a face like that”

    Kobe Faker

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Letting him walk was the best thing ever. As I have said time and time again…he had no fire.

Yes, he was a backup. But he could have worked harder to become good and to turn heads. At the very least, it would have driven up his value for a trade.

He showed zero improvement from year to year. I saw it. Others saw it. And yet…others were blind to it.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    BuccoDav Says
“Why would you dive on a loose ball in the preseason?”

Maybe because he is a new quarterback in town and the fans needed to see his moxy?

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Chill out ladies – it’s game 1 of the preseason – as Ira said in 2002 the Bucs in week 3 got destroyed by the Redskins. i was never a huge Glennon fan but wasn’t a hater ever. He’ll be exactly what he was here – a game manager QB who won’t make a lot of big plays but won’t turn over the ball a ton. Well until week 7 when he’s benched for the rookie.

But seriously ladies – it’s preseason.

  28. DBS Says:

He is gone and not on this team. You are just baiting Cancercon. and company. But let us not forget who was the GENERAL of the MGM!

  29. Wausa Says:

It is only preseason and it was limited action, but wow Mike Glennon looked awful.

I’m sure if it was a real game and thee was game planning he would have done better but overall he looked terrible.

On the other end of the spectrum Trubisky looked fantastic going up against Denver’s 2nd team players.

  30. Hawaiian Buc Says:

After last night, I really don’t know if Glennon will still be starting when we play them in week 2. From what I saw, that’s a bad thing for us.

  31. Pickgrin Says:

Sorry TickerDr – I know you had your fingers crossed that MG8 would do well.

Glennon got paid for sure – but I can’t say going to Chicago was a smart career move. He’s really downgrading his stock around the league for future opportunities by taking the field with a terrible Bears team for however long that lasts.

With a good supporting cast – Mike Glennon can be a serviceable NFL starter. He needed to go to a team like Denver or KC or AZ to look good.

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

did you watch any of those games?…..i watched pats vs jags and fournette was a beast….they ran the ball right down the pats throat….fournette looked powerful and ran with great vision….he’s a day 1 starter….yeldon will be his back up….blake still looked like trash…I real sorry for my jville buddies…lol…

foreman looked pretty damn good…9 carries for 76 yards!!!….that’s crazy….he looked like a bell cow….

didn’t see much of cook but from what I saw, I wasn’t impressed to say the less….he’ll find out that everyone in the NFL is fast….he aint playing duke and nc state anymore….lol….GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Owlykat Says:

Now you know why I called Glennon our Albatross when the Glennon Mob was calling him the Cannon and hoping he would be our Franchise QB. He has always been outplayed every preseason since he was drafted by another Buc QB. That alone should have tipped everyone he was a loser! He was so overhyped by Stupid Schiano and Dumb Louie and some fans bought that garbage who should have believed their own eyes.

  34. volbuc1 Says:

First preseason game. Don’t panic Joe, he will improve. You were just loving that last night. Wrong. –Joe
Don’t forget you were the BIGGEST fan of your boy Johnny who??? Ha Ha. Sure. Joe is a big Johnny Football fan. So?
Last I heard he might have been sitting on the couch with you.
Glennon is making a lot more cash than everyone on this site but for some reason you still think he sucks.. Ha!
What does money have to do with his performance? Glennon is at best a very poor starter. No crime in being a solid backup. In fact, it should be celebrated.–Joe

  35. Wesley Says:

Who cares? He is no longer on our team.

  36. Chris Says:

I am pretty sure the $8 million offer from Bucs to be the backup was to greatly improve the chance of turning the Glennon departure into a compensatory draft pick at the end of the season.
