Notes From Training Camp Day 1

July 28th, 2017

Somewhere in there, the media mob has swallowed America’s Quarterback.

It is here. Joe’s famed notes from training camp practice, Day 1 to be precise.

It was a blazing hot practice for a morning. It was underwear football so no pads, no hitting. Pads come on Monday, tentatively. At any rate, here we go!

* Packed house at One Buc Palace. Lot of energy. Music blaring. Hot as blazes.

* One of first songs really cool. Norman Greenbaum “Spirit in the Sky.”

* And away we go! Jameis to Mike Evans along the right sideline for 15 yards.

* Holy cow, a trick play! Jacquizz Rodgers on the reverse to the right.

*  “Good vi-buh-ra-tions… “

* Quick slant from Jameis to Mike Evans on left side and since it is underwear football, could have scored.

* Topless football (meaning no-helmet period).

* Doug Martin looks rocked up. Not sure if he is, but from a distance appears so.

* Cam Brate goes low for Jameis pass but can’t come up with it.

* Beautiful: DJax catches Jameis pass in stride about 15 yards over middle, turns up field, splits safeties and… he… is… GONE!

* Adam Humphries (Rudy!) hauls in pass on left side from Jameis. Low throw to avoid pick.

* Cam Brate with nice catch in double coverage along right sideline.

* Kool and the Gang!

  3. Maze Says:

Don’t forget all the McCoy tears after practice

  4. DB55 Says:

    Maze

Tell me more. Are you kidding or did he really cry?

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Yeah

I’m looking more forward to watching hard knocks than G.O.T

  6. DB55 Says:

    Maze

Are you referring to him talk about Brian Price cuz if so that’s understandable. I think they were boys, I’d cry too.

  7. Bucsfan23 Says:

What does Doug Martin looks rocked up mean?

  8. Etzel Says:

Curious what you guys mean by “rocked up”. I can think of three different things you could be going for.. lol

  9. Joe Says:

What does Doug Martin looks rocked up mean?

“Swole” up. Beefed up. Been hitting a lot of weightrooms.

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

It’s not so much the long ball that gets me geeked, it the spread offense aspect with Djax taking a 15 yarder to the house. Poor safeties are worried about Evans, Howard and Brate. (I don’t know who was on the field, but it’s my fantasy). There are just too many options. I envision #13, #80 and #11 split to one side and a Wr screen to #11 with the big guys in front blocking. Thanks Joe for you dedication.

  11. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks Joe. Easing your way into the practice notes I see. Or perhaps not much happened today?

I was just thinking about this yesterday now that we have all the players back in camp under the watchful eye of coaches and staff.

No Buccaneer that I am aware of got into “trouble” of any sort this offseason.

I bet only a few teams can say that and it speaks to the character of this group which already seems focused on doing whatever is needed to have a shot at that Feb game in Minneapolis.

  12. Pickgrin Says:

” I envision #13, #80 and #11 split to one side and a Wr screen to #11 with the big guys in front blocking”

Would be willing to bet that vision will come true Dewey…

This offense poses mismatches all over the field. You could see the safeties trying to play over the top of both Desean and Evans, leaving the middle of the field behind the linebackers wide open. OJ and Brate will have a field day! the Auclair kid looked really good out there too (he is huge!). The running game should definitely benefit as well. The Chris Godwin one-handed catch off of the tipped pass was probably the best highlight of the day… Don’t know how that didn’t make the Training Camp Notes.

  14. Papa578 Says:

Woo-hoo! Love It Joe. Keep it coming, it’s damn excitin’!

  15. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

nate everyone sleeping on him but Auclair will make this team. Too much substance with the young man not to.

  16. Locked In Says:

Thanks for the clarification on ‘rocked up’, I was thinking crack.

  17. Oj "I Got The Juice" Howard Says:

Joe you slacking on those training camp notes. Goodwin had a nice one handed catch, jameis looked pretty sharp and that new cornerback we signed intercepted fits

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

They have to keep Auclair, they will never get him back.

  19. Joe Says:

Thanks Joe. Easing your way into the practice notes I see. Or perhaps not much happened today?

For the most part, it was a boring, nondescript underwear football practice.

The Godwin catch may have been the play Joe missed because he was looking down and taking notes. Did hear a huge roar. That’s what happens covering practice. You sometimes miss a play while documenting another. Only have one set of eyes.

  20. Joe Says:

    jameis looked pretty sharp

Joe wrote an entire post on how Jameis connected with Jackson. 🙁

  21. Maze Says:

No just meant crying about his haters

  22. TrollSlayer Says:

i thought the corners and WRs looked sharp of course a few drops here and there but its only day 1— jameis looked sharp for the most part

  23. Owlykat Says:

The passing looked good, but I can’t wait for the pads to come on and we can see for ourselves if our OL and DLs are as good as we have been told. I don’t expect to see any decline in our defensive backfield.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I vote for less about the music and more about the football.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I am especially interested in Walker

  26. Joe Says:

I vote for less about the music and more about the football.

Joe is trying to convey what the atmosphere at training camp is like for those who cannot attend. That includes items that fans see/feel/hear/smell which includes off-field happenings like people running with Bucs flags trying to start cheers, the music that is played, the broiling heat that fans (and everyone) is enduring as well as the fruity scent of the cheerleaders.

In some circles, this is called “color.”

There are so many places to get “just football” which after a while is so dry. Joe doesn’t want to be like them, mainly because those are failing businesses or businesses losing so much cash they can barely afford to keep staffers on an increasingly shrinking payroll.

  27. TampaTown Says:

You’re right Joe you can really paint a picture. But ahem…”the fruity scent of the cheerleaders?” Just how close were you? No wonder you missed some plays!

  28. Joe Says:

    Ha! 🙂

Couple of years ago, in an area where only media and Bucs staffers are allowed along the practice field sidelines, a narrow two-yard wide path bordered by orange snowdrift fence (that’s what it is called in the Midwest), a few cheerleaders walked by Joe and given the tight restraints, Joe could easily smell their perfume.

They were heavily laced with a perfume that had a distinct if not overpowering fruity scent.

  29. FONZ BUCCARELLII Says:

Don’t want to live in a world without color Joe!!!

The scents are a nice touch too!!

Who doesn’t need or appreciate stoping to smell the roses!!!

    Keep up the great work!
