Chris Archer Defends GMC

July 25th, 2017

Sticks up for fellow pro.

Real recognize real.

Bucs Hall of Famer Warren Sapp has stuck up for stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. Former opposing NFC South offensive coordinators like 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter have both said the critical key to beating the Bucs was to gameplan a way to take out GMC.

But none of this matters to some fans who seemingly would prefer ex-Bucs marginal defensive tackle Akeem Spence over GMC. This just makes Joe shake his head.

Yesterday morning, after GMC went on a Twitter rant that Joe guesses was sparked by Ronde Barber’s comments claiming GMC is not a badass, one Tampa Bay area sports star jumped on Twitter to defend GMC. That would be Rays ace Chris Archer.

The right-hander for the wild card-chasing Rays apparently knows the real GMC, not the cartoon character the haters want GMC to be. Archer seems to think the haters are just blind if not dead-wrong.

Joe just can’t figure it out.

No sane person can say the Bucs are better off without GMC. That’s just crazy talk, which leads Joe to believe the haters are either blind or don’t watch games.

Be careful what you wish for.

I’m no GMC fan but he is our defensive tackle and we need him to perform for us to succeed. He is not Sapp but he is ok. We do need leaders on this defense and hopefully that will come from Ayers and Kwon. Let GMC be a good soldier and someone else lead because it was thrown on him as a rookie and he does not have the inner makeup to be a leader.

  2. BucEmUo Says:

Morons….the same guys that wanted Madden from the Rays gone I’m guessing

  3. RayJameisStadium Says:

    Chris Archer nailed it!!!

GMC does good work on the field but the passion is missing on the field. The fire is missing. Killer instinct to dominate. He is good. He is missing some Ayers attitude on the field. We would be worst without him. But I trust on Licht to be searching for his future replacement. Just like Dungy great guy good at his work but just medium heat on the field where the burner should be at maximum temperature. In another words, be business like rather than playing a game. The nice paycheck on Friday should remind you of your duty on Sunday.

    GMC needs some JUICE!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  4. Mike Says:

He may not be a leader but you can’t deny that he makes plays. Let someone else take the captain spot and let GMC just focus on his game and be the best team player he can be. Not everyone was born to be a leader. I say get off his back and let him be. It’s on the coaching staff to find other great D-linemen to help bring out the greatness that we have seen out of GMC. I think they finally may have that with this year’s squad. At the same time I do think the Bucs staff definitely needs to start scouting DT to replace GMC and Baker before too long so we don’t roll backwards when they leave.

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Any person went through, who was with team through the Dungy and Gruden years can only relate.

GMC is good. …….but not great……..and have always been seriously over hyped by the media.

GMC is what he is……..and this generational of NFL players hardly has those badass players.

  6. mark2001 Says:

BucEm…. those kind of guys disappear into the woodwork and hope we develop Amnesia. Same kind of thing happened with the “fire Gruden/ hire Rah” crowd and “Lovie Smith will be the second coming of TD” crowd. The damage is done, and then they B and moan about what happens to the team overall and the win/loss outcomes.

  7. Ndog Says:

How does this surprise anyone when Archer is the exact same player as McCoy? He is crazy talented puts up good numbers but doesn’t show up when it matters, just like McCoy. So him understanding McCoy makes complete sense. Archer loves the spotlight, strikes out a ton of batters, but has a 3.77 ERA and is .500, which is average just like McCoy. That’s not horrible but they both want to be more and that is the problem.

  8. mike10 Says:

I think they’re both the most overrated players on their respective teams. Both great people, but more talk than play.

    So there’s that.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

@Ndog- I’ll take your comparison a step further. While Archer has had his struggles, how much run-support has he had since starting as a Ray?
We keep heaping expectations on ONE player out of an entire team to stand out in a TEAM sport. It’s misguided.

When I ask my friends in different places outside of Tampa Bay what they think of GMC they say “Top 3 DT, especially in a 4-3”. Then I send them the link to one of these GMC articles on JBF and tell them to read the comments.

Just so some of you slack-jawed mouth breathers know, the way people outside of Tampa Bay look at GMC and laugh at your inane comments is the same way we look at the mouth breathing Patriots fans who think Jimmy Garappolo should start over Tom Brady.

Dood needs to defend that sweep against the rangers. Dayum…

  12. Lamarcus Says:

I don’t think I’m crazy or insane to think we are better off than gmc. That’s unknown. Buy yea we could use his salary to sign younger guys

  13. D-Rome Says:

I don’t think I’m crazy or insane to think we are better off than gmc.

Trust the sane among us. You are.

Buy yea we could use his salary to sign younger guys

Right now GMC’s contract is a bargain compared to other top DT’s.

Go ahead, name these younger guys who are better than McCoy who were or are currently on the market.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

I think we’ll be better off without him as long as it came with a few drafts picks including a 1st…..especially at this stage in his career….GO BUCS!!!

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

^^^Yeah, because all 1st rounders turn out to be All-Pros! You don’t have to look far to find one such example. Here’s a hint: The “Beastly”. Yep, trade a known, productive, All-Pro, for an unknown roll-of-the-dice.
    That’s smart!

  16. Lamarcus Says:

    Drome

I understand what ur coming from. But I’m tired of losing and having losing type players. Odd to see this drama unfold. Looks like he has his toughest times during winning seasons. Which is 2. U can mock what I say all u want but imo I believe Ronde and can connect w he is saying. Gmc doesn’t care what fans think so other defending him and bashing him doesn’t matter. Insane or not doesn’t matter

  17. 813bucboi Says:

Go ahead, name these younger guys who are better than McCoy who were or are currently on the market…..

    its called the DRAFT….
    its called player development….
its called “planning for the future”…..

nice guys come in last…..Suh may be an a$$hole, but he’s gotten Detroit and Miami to the playoffs….his attitude and the way he plays were some of the driving forces for those teams….GMC may produce but does he make those around him better?…IDK…I cant say for sure…GO BUCS!!!!

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

No sane person can say the Bucs are better off without GMC.

Joe tell us how you really feel!!! LMAO….One of the reasons I love this site.

Here is what disturbs me about PART of the GMC hate…not all…but sadly I honestly believe if GMC had spit on a couple of opponents…maybe kicked an opponents in the ‘nads or stomped on one like Suh…or perhaps had smacked around a few women then he would have earned “badasss” status. As our fearless leader likes to say that’s SAD.

I confess that like some here I’m not fond of getting prostelyzed by my Christian brethren. I TOTALLY respect their beliefs I only ask that they respect mine. BUT…when a Christian walks the walk and is not a total hypocrite who practices nothing what Jesus taught…as in love the poor…hard for wealthy people to get to heaven…turn the other cheek….when a Christian makes the attempt to follow Jesus advice…then I’m ok with it.

GMC is the proverbial goody two shoes…doesn’t make him a bad football player!

  19. Lamarcus Says:

OUR own young players. Like ME, kwon, marpet, etc.

  20. 813bucboi Says:

so you wouldn’t trade a DT that will be 30years old by the end of the season with an injury history that has just admitted, “my knees hurt” and didn’t show up when his team needed him the most (vs dallas) and just likes to “have fun” for a few draft picks that would include a 1st round pick?…..

the organization would have 2 first round picks…leverage to move up or trade down and collect more picks for the future….one of those “bada$$” players could come in the first(Winston) or 2nd(marpet) or 4th(kwon)….

and with the way licht has been drafting, I would do it in a heart beat….one things for sure, GMC aint no “bada$$”….GO BUCS!!!!

  21. Lamarcus Says:

It’s not about being mean imo. It’s not kicking or spitting on a few. It’s about that moment. That time. That 1 time when we gotten blown out and I see this clown smiling like it’s funny. It’s about when Winston and Kwon and ayers were added and gmc took a back seat. What a let down.

  22. Lamarcus Says:

I would of trade gmc about 2 years ago.

  23. Lamarcus Says:

    D-Rome

Outside of Tampa hardly knows anything about mccoy.

  24. USFBUC Says:

GMC is a really good DT and his performances back it up. If there was ever a time to trade GMC it was a few years ago in his prime, while on a long term contract, after either the 4 or 2 win seasons. Now though we are locked in for the next few years and will hopefully win a SB.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

It’s about when Winston and Kwon and ayers were added and gmc took a back seat. What a let down.

    ^^^^…BINGO…..

what leader/bada$$/bigstickcarrier takes a back seat when your the “face of the franchise”?….

Ask yourself, why does dirk want a bunch of bada$$ big stick carriers and not a bunch of “nice guys”….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  26. D-Rome Says:

nice guys come in last…..Suh may be an a$$hole, but he’s gotten Detroit and Miami to the playoffs….

Yeah…uh-huh….Suh did it all by himself. He didn’t need Jay Ajayi and Tannehill having one of the best years in their career. He didn’t need Cameron Wake getting 11.5 sacks in the defensive end position. He didn’t need the Dolphins having one of the easiest schedules in the NFL last season.

Nope, not at all. Suh lifted the team on his back right? The amazing thing is that he did this while getting *LESS* sacks than McCoy.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

    ^^^This! LOL!

  28. 813bucboi Says:

Nope, not at all. Suh lifted the team on his back right? The amazing thing is that he did this while getting *LESS* sacks than McCoy.

his attitude is what lifted the team….he did some amazing things in his playoffs games…I remember he sacked tony romo twice in that playoff game….he was the only one playing on defense vs pittsburg….

so you rather have #’s over “w”….rather have 10sacks than a playoff appearance…all those sacks GMC has and not one of them in the playoffs…..you and GMC belong together….GO BUCS!!!!

  29. NFLNut Says:

GMC is a great player period. He may not be Suh, Donald, Watt, etc., but he is indeed a great player and people should appreciate him for what he is, not what they wish he was.

Same with Mike Evans … he’s not as dynamic as ODB or as fast and freakishly athletic as Julio, but so what, he’s still a great WR and I’m thrilled the Bucs have him.

Same with Jameis, he’s not as athletic as Vick was and doesn’t throw quite as hard as Favre did, but so what, he’s amazing and the Bucsare blessed to have him … enjoy him and all these great players for what they are!

As for being a “nice guy” … Kurt Warner, Joe Montana, Russell Wilson, Steve Young and many other SB champions were all considered “goody two shoes” … and maybe the greatest DL ever, Reggie White was the epitome of a “nice guy”.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Sapp averaged 7 sacks per year over his career.

McCoy averages 6 over his career so far.

That’s pretty close if you ask me.

Also, Sapp went over 10 sacks 4 times. McCoy has not at all…yet. But then…he still has 7 years to do so.

People forget that before McCoy, we were stuck with Chris Hovan, Roy Miller, Dre Moore and Ryan Sims at Defensive Tackle…how many sacks did they have combined in their careers????

    38.5.

So McCoy has more sacks than the entire defensive tackle unit that was here the year before he was drafted…over their careers!

    Grow up, people.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    McCoy has 42.5 sacks.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And don’t forget…McCoy was injured his first two years. So really, is average is higher. Like 7.7, which puts him at more than Sapp’s average.

  33. RayJameisStadium Says:

With Baker next to McCoy we will see a Sapp like season this year. I would not be surprise to see McCoy get 10 or more sacks this year.

Although, I would rather see our defense resemble a wolf pack. No double digit sack player but 7 players with 5 sacks.

The Seattle game was PERFECTLY played by our defense. I want more of that. Having McCoy is key this year. He always earns his pineapple.

If Licht in the coming years drafts a player like McCoy but with Ayers attitude, Licht will eclipse the Patriots.

    In Licht We Trust!!!

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Jeez 2nd day in a row and moronic fans feel an impulse to bring Suh into this because he was one and done in the playoffs.

That silly tactic may work with the casual fan muchambo but not here. You guys wanna talk up Suh like he did something special but all it does is show exactly how danged ignorant you truely are. Hahahaha you talk up your boy Suh and his precious defense looked lost on the field against Pittsburgh. Like dude, seriously, go flog your own rear cause you don’t have a clue what your talking about. The Dolphins, defense especially, did nothing more then prove how soft they were in that game and prove they were absolute pretenders and they got run over like sideline cheerleader. You idiot dreamers know nothing. Every word makes you sound dumber. Spare us your vast knowledge of how great Such is because of how he choked in the playoffs……either that or tell us about something you have actual knowledge on. Choice 3- bite me you clueless dreamer. Jeez you guys just get dumber but the minute
