The Unspoken Truth Between Jameis And McClain

June 15th, 2017

The newcomer in the Bucs’ secondary, veteran cornerback Robert McClain, is keeping quiet on a sensitive subject.

It’s probably a wise move.

A great way to make the Tampa Bay roster is to be in good graces with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. So McClain told Joe that he has yet to mention to Jameis that he intercepted one of his passes (video here) when McClain was a Carolina Panther in 2014.

“Nah, I ain’t talking about that with Jameis. He’s my teammate now. I don’t want to bring up anything bad. Nothing negative. We got each other’s backs,” said McClain, who said he was a tiny bit surprised Jameis didn’t mention it.

“I’m all positive all the time, and so is Jameis. So I guess I won’t hear about it. I riding with him, I’m riding with my team all the way.”

Joe’s almost surprised Jameis hasn’t joked with McClain about that pick. Joe pegged Jameis for the kind of guy who would have some fun with that.

Through minicamp, it sure feels like the Bucs’ cornerbacks are deep. There’s real competition at nickel between McClain, Hey Jude Adjei-Barimah and Javien Elliott. And McClain and Barimah can battle to play outside with versatile veteran Josh Robinson and wild card Ryan Smith, if Vernon Hargreaves or Brent Grimes were to go down.

The team is a long way from the dark days of E.J. Biggers, Leonard Johnson, Danny Gorrer, Lequan Lewis and spa-day-taking, pill-popping Eric Wright.

McClain couldn’t have intercepted Jameis in 2014. Jameis was a rookie in 2015.

@ Bucs_365: You’re correct; It was the 2015 season finale in which he picked Winston.

  3. DB55 Says:

I’m sure Jameis forgot about that play a long time ago.

Leonard Johnson was feast or famine. He would bite on a lot of plays looking to make a highlight reel pick.

He was a poor mans Wayne Haddix.

I am glad to see the competitive juices flowing at One Buc Place, even this early. That will help Jameis Winston get better and better. Yippee-ki-yay, Mr. McClain!

@ DB55: I agree. After his first game against Tennessee he was amped up and itching to get back into the film room and see what went wrong.

People bashed him for that terrible opening game but what most also forget (or don’t know) is that Doug Williams first pass was also a pick six and he turned out alright.

Is Josh Robinson taking snaps at FS?

Jameis doesn’t remember bad plays, remember?

I think our secondary will be just fine. Got a good feeling about this team this year. Unleash the hounds!

Jameis seems to have a short memory. Good trait for QB to have really
