Day 3 Minicamp Practice Notes & Nuggets
June 15th, 2017*Winning players coach Dirk Koetter cut practice short about 20 minutes today, giving his men a break as they prepare to head off for a six-week vacation. Joe was on scene at the abbreviated session and has tasty morsels.
*Little fan access today, unlike on Tuesday and Wednesday. More of a typical, no-pads, underwear football session. Frankly, Joe’s rather sick of the flag football antics, mostly because Joe really wants to see how the hungry Bucs linemen battle each other already. There will be many great head-to-head matchups once training camp begins. So many linemen have so much too prove. And no, that’s not a shot at Gerald McCoy, you haters.
*America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, hits Mike Evans on a long pass down the right sideline.
*Doug Martin jukes and dodges his was through traffic to the left for short gain. Of course, the “traffic” is the NFL’s version of fake news. Jacquizz Rodgers with a nice run up the middle BBBUUUTTT… it is underwear football. Likely would have been stopped at line in real football. Running backs will be evaluated in August.
*Jameis tries to squeeze in a pass with Brent Grimes in tight coverage. No, no, no. Grimes with the pick and return for six.
*More topless football (no helmets). Unlike in some clothing optional establishments, so Joe is told, the music is turned off for this routine.
*Evans just took fan favorite Chris Conte to school on a pass along right sideline.
*Heavy Metal Day, it seems, at One Buc Palace. Plenty of Motley Crue and Guns ‘N Roses. In past practices, such artists as Eminem, Lou Bega, The White Stripes, Boyz II Men, Drake, Samantha Fish, Dubstep, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, AWOLNATION and Kanye West had their music fill the air.
*Jameis floats a pass to O.J. Howard over middle. O.J. reaches up and grabs it for TD. Not unlike Jameis to Kelvin Benjamin vs. Auburn in Rose Bowl.
*Grimes with a break up in traffic. This dude will be 34 in July???
*Jameis threads needle between defenders to Doug Martin in right flat.
*Howard with a TD catch in traffic. Dude is coming on.
*For the Telvin Westbrook crowd: He just caught a high pass from Fitz in crowded defense for six.
*Kicker practice! Lots of playful hollering by the Bucs players as it seems Nick Folk and Roberto Aguayo each attempt two tries from 50+ yards. Today, the kickers are perfect on the real goal posts.
*Rookie moments for Howard. Red zone work and it’s a drop on a throw from Jameis, followed by a ball Howard couldn’t squeeze from Jameis, though it was thrown behind him. Joe has noticed what appears to be a pattern. If a first-team receiver (or almost first-team guy) drops a ball, then he seems to often get another shot on the next play. Perhaps Joe’s just taken too much sun.
*Pass breakup in red zone! Lavonte David is pumped up after getting a mitt on a pass for Cameron Brate.
*Ryan Griffin with some zip on a pass to the near corner of the end zone to Josh Huff breaking off a sharp route. Mike Evans really celebrated that one. Pretty cool to see a veteran like Evans dialed in to the third-team action late in a practice.
*Ryan Fitzpatrick appeared to find some accuracy today after a rough day yesterday.
*Joe sees rookie second-round pick Justin Evans on the sidelines every day and can’t help but wonder how huge a learning curve he will have when he’s finally ready to practice at full steam. Big preseason lies ahead for him.

Great update. If I were you, Joe, I’d go on vacation right now. There shouldn’t be any real news coming out of One Buc for a full month. Enjoy…

A 6-week vacation? That’ll be harder to take than waiting for the draft to start. Interesting observation Joe about Justin Evans. Even though he’s a second round pick, I don’t expect to see him as a starter until mid-season … at the earliest. Too much lost ground to make up, plus his techniques will need a lot of work IMO before he beats out experienced guys like Tandy, Conte or Wilcox.

Lou Bega? That’s just mean putting that song in my head.

Too bad….no Hall & Oates for Joe.
Good to hear Grimes doing well….I think he’s figured out that his “high maintenance” wife, Miko will require a great deal of cash to keep her happy for the next 50 years…..or, he can simply dump her and give up 50%….either way it will be expensive.

We will be having all sorts of nuggets in the coming days and weeks. No snooze zone here.

Thanks Joe. Practice notes will be missed for the next 6 weeks.

Where’s my money?

@Joe … “No snooze zone here.” Thank goodness. The time between OTAs & start of preseason can really drag (from a football news perspective). Good to hear y’all aren’t talking off for Maui yet.
