Body Change
June 1st, 2017At the 2016 Pro Bowl, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, learned from hanging around Russell Wilson that he had to change his body in order to be great (he’s not great yet, getting there though).
As a result, Jameis transformed his body, got lean and lost the tube he had from good eating. It seems another Bucs player has learned the same after his rookie season.
A lot has been made of the body transformation of defensive end Noah Spence. Dude looks like a different player all rocked up and chiseled. He spoke about it with prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.
Spence has used the time away from the field to change his body. He’s noticeably leaner and pictures of his new body next to the old one have circulated on the internet. It’s a major transformation, with his body fat now down below 10 percent.
“I eat clean now,” he said. “I wanted to be faster. I cut out a lot of stuff. I eat prepared meals and go to Whole Foods and stuff like that. I feel a lot better.”
Koetter’s office overlooks the team’s practice fields. It gave him a chance to watch injured players rehab during the offseason. He said he would watch in amazement at how hard Spence worked in his rehab.
“He just gets after it,” Koetter said. “You can tell he just wants to get back onto the field. It’s important to him.”
Spence said he is driven to be great because he had football taken away from him twice. Once was the nonsense at Ohio State when he was tossed off the team. The second time was last year when he blew out his shoulder.
Spence even said he’s given up drinking. He doesn’t want anything to stand in his way of playing football and thereby, being great.
Joe was blown away, and still is, by how Spence played with basically one arm in the final game of the 2016 season. How chased down Cam Newton with one wing is still a riddle, but he did it.
While most Bucs fans are giddy about the prospects of how explosive the offense could be, it seems Spence is sort of flying under the radar.

I hope he hasnt lost weight as he was already undersized. Hopefully his fat loss was replaced by a larger amount of muscle mass.

Cant wait for the 3rd down rush package of GMAC/Baker/Ayers/JSmith with hands in the dirt and LVD/Spence coming from LB – its about time we had some talent to pressure with!!!

From everything I’ve read, it was a weight transfer. He turned fat into muscle. It’s awesome to see this type of commitment from young players. Many teams including the Bucs brag every draft of how they have got guys who “love football”. But these stories, the way he played through injury, and physical results prove it. I know Jameis is rubbing off on these guys.

Yes, Clw JB, Jacques Smith coming back is like getting another good free agent or draft pick. He can create havoc when/if he’s on the field…

Amazes me how many see this story and try to spin it to a negative. He is an amazing young man with an amazing story. He truly was lost and it seems his new drug is success. The more he tastes the more it seems he wants. He won me over by self drug testing to show that he was clean. Actions and decisions is what you get measured by.
I know I’m quick to defend him but he is an example much like Jameis of how to mature towards success.

@Joe: speaking of DEs, is there anything more to the story about signing Sterling Bailey and Tavaris Barnes? Are these just camp bodies or are other DEs on the roster in trouble?

I wouldn’t discount the Bucs alumni, Brooks and Quarles, who are very much still involved either directly or to some extent with the team. They along with key players are setting a precedent on how to be great. Coaches and trainers help to an extent, but there’s nothing like your peers and legends of the game who have walked the same path. I really like the attitude of this young team. This is one group, coaches included, that I hope we can keep for a long time.

So why did lich sign Sterling Baily ( Ga. Bulldog) and another DE today? Is this the end of George Johnson?

Am I the only one who ‘thinks’? DE/OLB Dwight Freeney (37) would be a great mentor for this kid.

While the offense will be trying to gel with all the new pieces in different and new positions, It will be the defense that can get this team off to a fast start!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A “Sprouts” just opened up on Dale Mabry down the street from RayJay. You should hit that up Noah.

I was in there twice last week and loved it. If those grand opening prices hang around, I’ll like it even more.

Just a quick biology primer here. Fat does not “turn into muscle”. Ever. One can reduce fat and gain muscle. However, if the fat loss were replaced by a larger amount of muscle mass as someone noted, he would actually be heavier (muscle weighs more than fat). At the end of the day, depending on his weight now, he probably lost about 5-10 lbs of fat and gained 3-5 lbs of muscle (which is a lot for an offseason). Obviously water weight is also a variable. All I know is he resembles Von Miller and Khalil Mack far more now than he did last season. Let’s hope he resembles them on the field too.

Think that post was spot on…and I”m with you…now that Noah’s has made the physical resemblance to the stars lets hope his play will resemble them as well.
I believe it will. I think Noah blows up big time this year.

Listen to this guy ^^^^^^ He is not a moron. My main concern with Spence is being too lean can seriously affect people’s strength and explosion… has he gotten stronger as he has gotten leaner? It’s an extremely difficult task for anybody.

OK…
Just got to answer all of this kvetching (thanks for the word Joe) regarding this “weight loss”
He weighed in at 251 at @15% body fat… which translates roughly into 38 pounds or so of fat.
He has transformed to @ 245 with 10% body fat, which roughly translates to 24.5 pounds of fat.
Which means he reduced his body weight by 6 pounds while loosing 13.5 pounds of fat. So he added @7.5 pounds of muscle.
Now, I doubt any of these numbers are spot on, but these are the numbers that have everyone in a hissy.
The notion that adding muscle and reducing fat will have a negative impact on his power and explosiveness is head scratching.
June 1st, 2017 at 5:55 pm
* Muscle weighs more than fat…. if you compare them by volume yes, but a losing a pound of fat, gaining a pound of muscle .. it is still just a pound.
June 1st, 2017 at 5:58 pm
One last thing on this.. If you told me that he had dropped to 245 while reducing his fat number to 13% and he didn’t look drastically different, then I would get all of this.
