Talkin’ Playcalling
May 19th, 2017Who will call plays this season, winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter or offensive coordinator Todd Monken?
That question was answered definitively yesterday when Monken said it would be Koetter, though Joe wrote — an said on the Ira Kaufman Podcast — months ago there was no chance Koetter would relinquish calling plays.
Koetter hopped on BSPN to talk to Wendi Nix about playcalling and more. Give it a look below. This is the same interview in which Koetter poured cold water on the crowd who thinks Doug Martin is sure to be on the roster this fall.

How is Koetter basically saying Doug Martin will be on the roster taken so out of context by you? The remark about his work in the offseason program by nearly everyone in the organization is a clear sign that he will be given every possible chance to tote the rock week 4

Like i said, it would be foolish to say he will be on the roster. He could relapse tomorrow, making whoever said it a fibber. As with all substance abuse issues, all people involved must take it one day at a time. Thats whats goin on here. If he continues to do the right thing he will be on the team. If not, he wont. Go bucs

Can’t wait to see the Joes back track when Doug suits up Week 4

LMAO. How did he “pour cold water” on the crowd that thinks he will stick? He literally said that “it’s yet to be determined” as to who will start week 4 and Doug’s role. That doesn’t indicate a greater chance that he’ll not start. He’s simply giving the most subtle and vague response to that question he could. All NFL coaches do that when something is undetermined.
Quiz could be on a hot streak. That doesn’t mean Doug won’t be on the roster. He has yet to see how Doug will perform in practice but it’s certainly not an indication that he will be cut.
You really do have something bigger against Doug than I thought because these type of comments are an everyday occurrence, joe.

Am I the only one who thinks Dirk should 100% give up the playcalling duties to Monken??
Some of his calls at crucial times were abhorrent.

Etzel you have to have the horses to make bold play calls. Luckily we have them now.
May 19th, 2017 at 9:07 am
etzel I’ve thought about that too but Dk is one of the best playcallers in football.
He had a lot of adversity to deal with in week 2 last year. Screwed up his game plan in his first year. I think he’ll have a better understanding of both and hopefully listen to his assistants and mike smith as to game management. He should be able to balance the two this year more, especially with more weapons and jameis growing into his role.

Martin is simply unreliable and just as likely to be popping Molly as he is a hole week, 4. at least with Molly we won’t have to watch his slow arse being dragged down from behind every week. Screw Martin he screwed the team so screw him. He’s just another hold over from the losing culture led by cancer93. bucs will be much better off when the holdovers are gone. It’s a different mindset at one buc winning is important now hosting movie night is not. The mentally weak lovers of losing like Martin and mccoy no longer fit

Who buys a Ferrari 458 Italia and pass the keys to they’re homeboy???

My two cents is this. The RB coach talk about the weight of two people yesterday during his presser. Quizz a loss of 6lbs making him faster and Barber who when I checked last season was listed at 223lbs. The coach said yesterday he is 233lbs. To me that was telling. He was sour on the fact McNichols decided to attend the rookie symposium. He said he should be here memorizing the playbook. So me personally I’m looking at Quizz and Barber to start next season.

He didn’t say a word about DM. Monken said in reference to comments from the media about how good he looks his response “he looked good this time last year as well” as if to say that don’t mean s@$!. Next Koetter Monken is str8est shooter on the coaching staff. He comes across like hate it or love I ain’t got time to play wit y’all.
May 19th, 2017 at 9:46 am
Those pressers are all still up at Bucs.com.
May 19th, 2017 at 9:49 am
Y’all are critical of Joe and his belief in the possibility that DM days here could be done. I think y’all might wanna open your minds to that posibility a little.

GMFB did this segment this morning about how the feature back is all but done in the NFL. Most organizations are doing it by commitee.

This team is about family!!! Kwon was suspended the last 4 games in 2015 even though he was a promising rookie they had his back. The same goes for Doug. You cant preach family then turn your back on your players.

Buc OG
Family has nothing to do with it. It’s a business. Doug Martin has made millions and millions of dollars. I’m happy for him. But it’s time now to make the move if McNichols can play. He is the future not Doug and if it’s not McNichols, Barber or Quizz it’s going to be the SOS next draft…we need an RB.
Personally I have high hopes for McNichols…he only has to be Doug Martin good which is just that…good not great. I think with the improved passing attack and better OL our running game will improve no matter who totes the rock.

Nah man it’s not like that. Joe keeps writing articles that are for the most part insinuating that Doug is a goner. He even suggests that it would take a small miracle. Those words are heavy.
I think most of us are open to the possibility that Doug will be cut, I mean that is common sense. But there is also a very strong possibility he will be retained.
To be too sure of either opinion is irrational. Right now it’s 50/50 and I’m just leaning towards him being on the roster week 4.
May 19th, 2017 at 11:10 am
IMO – Better than 50/50 Martin will be on the team in 2017. More like 70/30.
The coaches and GM aren’t lying. They really don’t know how this DM situation is going to go down. Everyone hopes Doug does what he is supposed to and looks good in camp and preseaon and stays healthy.
If all those things which could be reasonably expected occur – AND DM is willing to re-do his deal to one that is more favorable to the team financially and fully protects against “relapse” – then I think the chances of Doug Martin playing for the Bucs in 2017 goes way up above 90%.
Time will tell.
The wildcard is Jeremy McNichols. If the kid looks really really good – grabs the starting job and plays well in the 1st 3 games – then Martin’s future with the Bucs becomes much more uncertain.

I agree. I would even go 90/10. I just didn’t want to seem too bias.
It’s going to come down to if he can keep his head on straight. That’s the only doubt that exists, if he relapses. Which he won’t. I’m pretty confident that it was molly and that’s not really an addiction. He was just partying and got caught and went to rehab which is what he needs to do for the public eye. He doesn’t really have a problem but he wanted to make sure fans and the front office know he’s open minded and willing to do what it takes.
We’ll probably see 500 more articles on Joe thinking he’s a goner before he’s solidified on the roster.

That’s fair Eric.
