Megatron Endorses Chris Godwin
May 2nd, 2017With apologies to the Russell Shepard fan club, the misguided Kenny Bell Mob and the fine patrons of the velvet lined lounge of the Vero Beach Ramada Inn, welcome to a fantastic new era of Buccaneers football.
Your beloved Bucs have ramped up the depth and talent at receiver in such a big way. Throw in the shiny rookie toy at tight end, and you’re looking at legions of Bucs fans who can’t sleep eat or perform on the job.
It’s that exciting.
New third-round pick Chris Godwin is a huge part of the euphoria. What a diverse talent with speed to burn.
It’s not just Joe typing this. Godwin is endorsed by Calvin Johnson, the legendary “Megatron” receiver.
Buccaneers.com dug up a February story in the Detroit Free Press about Godwin’s private training in Florida with Johnson. Very cool stuff. Included in the linked story is Johnson calling Godwin, “a coach’s dream.”
Though his numbers dipped slightly this year — he had 69 catches for 1,101 yards in 2015, and 59 catches for 982 yards last season — Godwin said it was a better year overall.
“My main thing is trying to do anything that I can to help the team,” Godwin said. “That’s why, if you watch the film, you’ll see me out blocking downfield for running backs, receivers, in the run game, and then just doing whatever I can in the pass game to get open. So yeah, statistically, my numbers dropped a bit, but I’ll trade that for our team success any day.”
…But he said he and Johnson have stayed in touch since their training session and it’s a resource he plans to use going forward.
“I think it’s cool that he was able to come work out with me and I was thankful for the opportunity,” Godwin said. “But I think it’s awesome that he’s willing to stay in touch and to help me with whatever that I need, any questions that I have, things of that nature. He’s a great guy. I’m sure you know that, but he’s a great guy behind closed doors, as well.”
How cool is that! Godwin has one of the greatest NFL receivers of all-time as a mentor, and he’s walking into a stud wide receivers coach in Todd Monken, and he can learn so much from Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson.
Joe’s confident it will be hard to keep Godwin off the field this season, if he can stay healthy.
That’s not the sun shining. It’s Jameis smiling.

Is there any team in the league that can say their secondary is good enough to get a coverage sack on us this year? Not sure if it’s possible. Within 3 seconds someone should start to get open.
I think dirk changes the offense a little bit this year. We will still run long developing routes but I think he will have Winston go through a couple shorter reads since we should have a lot of open guys.
I know it goes against being explosive and all but an explosive pass is only 16 yards.
Before Winston had to wait on a lot of those developing routes because it was a 170+ target Evans show. This should help the O Line too.
I’m not talking Tom Brady dink and dunk, but I expect dirk to utilize Jameis amazing intermediate ball a lot this year cycling through reads like Ali Marpet cycles through towels during a meat sweats interview.

This is the most excited I’ve been for an upcoming football season in a while.
May 2nd, 2017 at 11:18 am
I have watched Godwin play in person. A really good comparison would be Mike Williams but faster

This was a great pick up by us. The offense should be improved this year and we might actually be able to handle an injury this year without having to sign guys from the street.
May 2nd, 2017 at 11:26 am
If Sweezy, DE J. Smith and Spence stay healthy we can own the NFC South!!!
May 2nd, 2017 at 11:28 am
Agreed USFBUC. My sister-in-law is Penn St. Alum so we watch a decent amount of games. This is a great pick. I do think this guy can be a solid #2 WR eventually and definitely a good #3 WR inevitably beating out Hump.
Good pick and NOT a reach.

hope dirk uses oj like the pats use gronk and how j.graham was used….when we got in the red zone, those teams would split gronk or jimmy out wide like a wr and run a simple fade or slant….
I think oj has the potential to be a better version of m.bennett….a TE that can can be efficient in the run game and a match up nightmare for linebacker, safeties and cbs in the passing game…..him and brate should be a force….
as long as the oline can hold up and stay healthy we should win the division…GO BUCS!!!!
May 2nd, 2017 at 11:44 am
Red Zone. ME13, Cam, OJ and Godwin. Pretty solid blocking group too.
Can’t wait.
May 2nd, 2017 at 11:48 am
man we are loaded with weapons lol. I really thought of Godwin as a top 40-50 pick this year and basically tied with Zay Jones as the next best WRs after the top 3.
We will have a dream matchup pre-snap every play basically. If you don’t double ME it should be an easy 15-20 yard completion every time. If you play off Zone good luck with Howard running through the middle underneath between LB coverage or hitting our RBs in the backfield like last year. If you load up the box and don’t keep a S high then Djax will burn you. And if you account for all our players Chris Godwin will typically beat your 3rd best corner and HOward willb eat most LBs/Ss. Rudy basically just gets to roam free underneath as a security blanket for safe yards.

Chris Godwin played in the 2014 Under Armour All-America game ..O.J. Howard and Kendell Beckwith played in the 2013 game.
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:02 pm
Would the Bucs be willing to hire Megatron as a “quality control”/assistant WR coach? His knowledge of NFC teams would be invaluable.
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:08 pm
Godwin is an outside reciever, not a slot.
I’m not sure why everybody wants to replace Adam Humphries so fast. He’s the prototypical slot reciever and he’s still develpoing.
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:23 pm
Go watch Godwin game films… he lined up all over the place, including the slot. He was quite a bit better of a collegiate player than Humphries, he’s far superior physically, and it is realistic to think he’ll be a better pro. Maybe he’s the 4th WR this season, but he will work his way up in time.
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:23 pm
Charles Davis: Buccaneers building basketball on grass. Godwin 4.42 40, 36 inch vertical. L9ve that analogy.
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:33 pm
Get Megatron to come out of retirement and play for us! Much rather have him as our 4th than Hump or VJax!🤣
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:41 pm
gotbbucs…If Dirk Koetter goes to a 2 TE set a lot. That will leave 2 WRs on the field ( Mike Evans and Desean Jackson). Some guys won’t get as many touches as they got last season.
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:41 pm
Which Mike Williams are you referring to Pa Privateer? The ex-Buc or the one just drafted?
May 2nd, 2017 at 12:45 pm
Mick
I agree with you that Koetter will have plenty of short routes to go with his bombs.
It’s not going to be all 40 yard heaves down the field…but I suspect we’re going to get a lot of our “big” plays on YAC. DJAX…Evans and OJ are not only able to get open for a deep pass…they are also quite able turning a shorter pass into a giant gain. IE…All of our explosivenesss is not tied just to #3’s ability to throw deep.
May 2nd, 2017 at 1:02 pm
biffbarker, that is an awesome 12 package. You can easily run and pass with that lineup. Its so exciting to at least see on paper that we have so many weapons that we can run a number of groupings that gives multiple options that create mismatches every time. The additions of DJax, OJ Howard, and Godwin looks to take this offense to an elite status.
May 2nd, 2017 at 1:11 pm
We don’t want to score too fast but control the clock and put up points as well. I believe the Saints defense always looks bad because Brees scores TDs so fast that it makes defense go back on the field, and they end up being gassed. That’s why a average offense and stud defense wons championship? Thats why pounding the RB wins games with stud ddefense.
May 2nd, 2017 at 1:16 pm
@Genco
Yes, our ex-buc Mike Williams (on field).
Chris Godwin is a little bit faster and stronger, but they have similar play making styles.
I really like the Boise St WR Sperbeck to back up Hump.
May 2nd, 2017 at 1:35 pm
@gotbucs- It’s not to replace anyone, it’s having your best 11 on the field. Hump is a good player but I don’t think he has the ceiling that Godwin does. You know what though, it’s a good problem to have.
May 2nd, 2017 at 2:48 pm
Hell, I endorse a lot of things. The proof is in the pudding. And this kid still has gotta prove he can make the team and contribute..Bottom line. Batter up Mr. Goodwin and..Good Luck!
May 2nd, 2017 at 3:52 pm
We don’t want to score too fast
Spoken like a true Lovie Loyalist… Hey the object of the game is to win. In order to win you must score therefore every play the goal is to score. The pathetic Lovie // dungy failed philosophy failed TWICE…. Score at will young Winston…. It’s a troubling concept for some to grasp.
May 2nd, 2017 at 4:34 pm
Man you score when you can. This is the NFL and not Madden. You take 6 as quick as you can get it.
May 2nd, 2017 at 4:45 pm
Load your gun Koetter and start shootin’.
May 2nd, 2017 at 4:47 pm
Pawel …oh boy. Too late.
May 2nd, 2017 at 5:01 pm
I’m a fan of Godwin, but I wonder how is he getting on the field next season?
Godwin doesn’t play the slot. Hump is the best slot wr on the team.
You don’t want Jackson running over the middle with with the way Jameis can sail the football.
Maybe put Evans in the slot more to get Godwin on the field? Or does he only play with the other guys need a breather?
May 2nd, 2017 at 5:19 pm
It’ll be nice to ease him into the offense and not be force fed. Question: Does Godwin return kicks and/or punts? Do we have a good idea who will be our returners?
May 2nd, 2017 at 5:23 pm
JameisDungy…Godwin will beat out Hump.
May 2nd, 2017 at 5:24 pm
Godwin will play the slot in the NFL until he’s ready.
May 2nd, 2017 at 6:10 pm
CG will become the steal of the draft. Best hands and best overall WR. It’s on Jameis and the O line now.
May 2nd, 2017 at 6:14 pm
Can’t discuss what position he’ll play without knowing the positions and their functions in Koetters offense. I can tell you it’s not #1, 2 and 3. I’m pretty sure there’s an “X” receiver, a “Y” and I wanna say “Z.” Godwin has good size and speed and the ability to play all 3. He’ll be fine.
May 2nd, 2017 at 7:41 pm
Godwin, Evans and McNichols can all return kicks.
You know what’s on my mind? What do we have in Ryan Smith at corner? You’d have to imagine the Bucs believe he’s something considering we let Verner go and didn’t draft one. Or is there something up Mr.Licht’s sleeve?
May 2nd, 2017 at 7:57 pm
Godwin sounds good. Haven’t seen him play. Last year the Bucs had little receiving depth once V-Jax went down.
May 2nd, 2017 at 10:37 pm
He reminds me alot of OUR mike williams
May 2nd, 2017 at 10:39 pm
Buc87 Maybe I should of said I wasn’t complaining but just my observation. Either way Bucs will be fun to watch.
May 3rd, 2017 at 1:57 am
Boom cannon fire kill shot 1 #13 ME/AKA/Godzilla Boom cannon shot 2 #11 DJAX/AKA/Flash Boom kill shot 3 OJ/The Freak Howard or Boom kill shot 4 Cam the man Brate or Hump or or and you see👁 Where I’m going with this can you say high octane I’m talking 93 premium phuck it’s more like NOS 1 time for them 2017 SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS TAMPABAY BUCCANEERS yeah I said it whom ever want’s it please come and get it 813HeadBusta out mane
May 3rd, 2017 at 10:45 am
FutureBucsGM I am very excited to see what Ryan Smith can do at CB this year. He was really good in college and now has a year under his belt in the NFL. Maybe as a safety/return, but he knows what the atmosphere is like.
May 3rd, 2017 at 10:47 am
People gonna think it’s North Korea with all the cannons goin off this year!!!
May 3rd, 2017 at 11:06 am
And why do people think he can’t play the slot? He is an absolute man beast over the middle with speed and good route running.
May 3rd, 2017 at 11:08 am
^and downfield blocking^ Okay I’m down now.
May 3rd, 2017 at 11:09 am
*done now. so sorry.
