Was Licht’s Hand Forced?
May 23rd, 2017You know it is underwear football season when backup quarterbacks are getting a lot of run on national TV shows.
And so is the case of new Bucs backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. A vagabond NFL quarterback, he had one good season and the rest is a lot of blech!
Is Fitz a good fit for the Bucs? The crew of NFL Live on BSPN discussed. One panelist, Josina Anderson, makes an interesting point. She believes with Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht investing so heavily in offensive weapons this offseason with the acquisitions of DeSean Jackson, O.J. Howard, Chris Godwin and Jeremy McNichols, Licht could not have gone into underwear football season with a backup like Ryan Griffin, who has yet to take one snap in a regular season game.
Anderson believes had Licht done that, stuck with Griffin as the No. 2 quarterback, and America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston got hurt, all of that investiture in #WeaponsForWinston would have been flushed down the toilet.
Take a look (and listen) for yourself and let Joe know what you think.

Seems obvious that Jason Licht & the Bucs’ coaches didn’t think that Ryan Griffin was ready to move up to #2 now that Mike Glennon has moved on. The panel’s point that Ryan Fitzpatrick is a good fit for the Bucs seems valid to me. Win-win situation. Well, except for Ryan Griffin (doubt that the Bucs will carry a 3rd QB on the roster again this year).

We don’t deserve Jamieis. He’s gonna be the greatest Buc ever!!!! Can’t wait until week 1. Fire the cannons!!!!!

Jameis *

Pro-style quarterback for their pro-style offense. Brilliant!
May 23rd, 2017 at 9:28 am
If you think about it all of Licht’s off season moves have been obvious or incredibly lucky…can you say OJ… but still give the man credit…he got er done!!!
We are now down to discussing depth are last remaining Achilles tendon…even depth at QB…which Licht has now solved.

I don’t know if his hand was “forced” per se. It just seems like a common sense move by an organization that is grasping the concept of winning and being a winning franchise.

“We don’t deserve Jameis.”
Speak for yourself. Maybe some of us don’t deserve Jameis. Make no mistake about it. WE MOST CERTAINLY do deserve Jameis Winston.

Any fsu fan can look at this BUCS team and see the similarities of fsu championship team .
Kelvin Benjamin fsu/ Mike Evans BUCS
Rashad Greene fsu/ Desean Jackson BUCS
Nick Oleary fsu / O.J. Howard BUCS
Devonte Freeman fsu / Jeremy McNicouls BUCS
Kenny Shaw fsu / Chris Goodwin BUCS…
That team was special and this one will be as well . Jaboo will have his favorite target especially with the game on the line but he will make sure everyone gets the rock.

Jason Licht is doing a A+ job this year
need a few more pieces in the cornerback position and we should compete against anyone
Kobe has bashed Licht numerous times, but i will praise him for what he has done well..
Licht brought in the players….lets see if the coaches can put the players in the correct position to succeed

OMG, dumbest statement of the week!
Similarities? Yeah, they all played the same positions…DUH! Other than Behemoth Benjamin and Evans… NOBODY is similar to ANYBODY on your list. Greene was an undersized possession WR… Jackson a burner. O’Leary, an undersized, non-athletic safety valve, OJ Howard a cornerstone TE…. I don’t even need to go on. Stop with the lunacy, please.

No one’s hand was forced lol it was just a smart signing. “Hand forced” would make me think of a trade or significant spending on a player. $3 mill is nothing for an experienced #2… considering we probably tried to keep Glennon for double or more.
Also – just wondering – if we do end up cutting Drug Martin will that factor into a compensatory pick? Right now we should get a 7th rounder based on a chart I looked up but that could go away based on the Fitzpatrick signing. If his $5-7 mill qualified that could be a 4-5 rounder… but I’m guessing he is not a qualified UFA if cut during the season?

“Licht’s hand forced”???
Whatever – stupid premise. It was a smart move and how he got Fitz to sign for so cheap is beyond me. I guess Fitz making $12M last year helped.
Its a good signing and a good fit all the way around. Probably the best available back up QB w/ experience that can fit into our system well.

Lord C –
The comp pick thing w/ # of signings vs # of losses ended on May 1st. Licht did a good job of keeping our signings below our losses during the required period and we did earn a comp pick for “losing” Mike Glennon to the Bears with his big new contract. I believe it will be higher than a 7th as well. We shall see.
But the bottom line is we are free to sign whatever Free agents we want at this point and it won’t affect the comp pick we may or may not have earned in next year’s draft.

It is obviously my sincere hope that Fitz only sees playing time in the Preseason and mop up duty late in any games where he have a commanding lead. With the weapons we have though, even Fitz can look pretty good if he is needed. Our offense is loaded with play-makers. Fitz had one good season in NY and I doubt they had the offensive fire power that we will be sporting this season.
May 23rd, 2017 at 12:28 pm
If we don’t have an outstanding Offensive line to buy Winston time all of these weapons will be for nothing. It starts in the trenches.
May 23rd, 2017 at 12:29 pm
they wanted a veteran backup. the guy they offered $7 million to for that job got offered more than double that salary by the team he signed with. they guy the bucs eventually signed came for half that amount. you can kiss the deep strike offense goodbye if Fitzpatrick has to come in, but the deep ball probably dies with winston on the sideline no matter what. they probably wouldn’t trust an inexperienced QB like Griffin to throw 20+ yard bombs on one out of every 5 dropbacks like winston does, nor could many other QBs stay alive in the pocket long enough for those throws to open up
May 23rd, 2017 at 1:06 pm
The offensive and defensive lines will determine whether Licht did a good job this year or not.
Frankly, if Winston goes down, I don’t foresee Ryan making a bit of difference.
May 23rd, 2017 at 1:07 pm
@Pick6
I though Glennon was only offered half as much by his new team, not double.

What Brandin said about the comparisons to the semenholes….love ya Jaboo but im a gatore fan…..

Signing Fitz is irrelevant.
Jameis-= Playoffs
Fitz/Ryan/Glennon/ anyone but Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers= no playoffs
Its really that simple.
You. Cant. Replace. Your Franchise. QB.
If, God forbid, we lose Jameis for any lenght of time- might as well gonin the Tank immediately. Its over til next year. Like it or not
Get that high draft pick/DE
Try again next year- when Jameis comes back.
Thats todays NFL. Its a complicated, pass first League.
Now, your QB has become so important, that he is virtually irreplaceable.

I was basically saying that when he has multiple targets this will become a very special season for all . The same way the 2013 Seminole season became special. It’s obvious that it’s not the exact same type of players but when he has a bunch of talent he will be a monster 2013 4000+ 40/10
2017
5000+ 40/10
