Intrigue.
So it appears Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is up to his old second round hi-jinks.
Licht is a second round wheeler-dealer. And it seems he’s trying to pull off another heist. But for who? Joe trusts he’s not trying to move up to draft a long-snapper.
Could it be he’s after Curtis Samuel, Chris Godwin, Dalvin Cook, Joe Mixon, Marlon Mack?
Let the drama begin as we prepare for the tonight’s second and third rounds.

Wow the first night will be hard to top. Better to be lucky than good.
Tonight could be really exciting! Who knows what will upset the board like QB’s did last night. To a lesser degree there are several QB’s that could do that tonight…certainly waiting to see where Kizer goes..I think that will take up one spot ahead of us…
Ten teams need RB’s…that’s not good…but the draft was offense heavy last night maybe tonight some teams will address defense giving us a shot at our RB.
Is it just me or does the draft seem more uncertain this year? Maybe it’s the trickle down effect from the lack of clear cut franchise QB’s? I think there is still a lot of suspense tonight.

I think it’s because there are so many quality players that can be had in the first 3 rounds at multiple positions. It’s allowing almost every team that already has a QB to draft BPA that aligns with a need.

I have some inside info I will share. Please don’t let it get out. There is a trade deal in works. With Chicago’s surprise move last night, the Bucs will trade Roberto Aguayo to the Bears in exchange for Mike Glennon and a 4th round pick. This is big folks. The Bucs now have their experienced backup QB, and the Bears were wanting to find a long-term replacement for Robbie Gould. Done.

Joe, he might not be moving up for a long snapper, but our Holder left for 15 million. We could trade up for a Holder and get him on a great rookie contract for 4 years until he wants 15 million. Get the Holder on the cheap now before the market goes up! Lol!

Round 2: Chris Godwin WR or Zay Jones WR to be Bucs #4 WR and KR. I don’t think they’d have to trade up to get either.
Round 3: Marlon Mack RB.
Remaining Rounds: Developmental DL and OL.
What about D for Mike Smith. Doubt there was ever a deal. However, there will be some veterans hitting the market soon with all the DBs and DEs drafted. The Bucs can get some depth.
Dalvin Cook. If the kid falls tonight in the 2nd…I still say grab the WR…means there is something more out there teams know that makes him unattractive.
I want to note: Be careful about drafting guys with injuries or other off-field baggage. We just used a 1st round pick for a TE; don’t forget…ASJ was supposed to be the Jimmy Graham/Tony Gonz/Greg Olsen solution on the Bucs in his prime right now! We see what believing in him got us.

Malik McDowell has the most upside of any DE in this draft, including Garrett. He can play both inside and outside and be dominant….Mike Smith would be grinning ear-to-ear with him.

I would say DE, WR, or S. A lot more edge rushers went off the board than expected. I like Willis, too, and Bill Polian just compared him to Robert Mathis (the guy that Polian picked). Cam Robinson would be a shrewd pick. I would not favor moving up.

If dalvin is available at 50 I don’t see how we wouldn’t draft him. I don’t see the point moving up for him, but if he pulls a Howard and slides into licht’s lap I think the bucs would have the most dynamic offense in the nfl.
How would you defend Evans, Jackson, Howard, Brate and Cook in a singleback 2 TE set?

RB in the 3rd. No Cook, no Mixon and I don’t like Kamara from Tennessee. He had good games against second rate teams and struggled against top SEC defenses.

I also think he may be the best WR in this class, or the potential to be long-term. He unfortunately abused his dog and missed the combine. He also only has a year of college experience, but the guy is a physical freak ala OJ Howard.

I look around and see decent starters at every position…RB and S sag a bit, but I wouldn’t call them voids. Those are question marks for now.
On Bucs backup QB…not saying he’s “good” but does have game experience…starting five games in four years and average 90+ QB rating…but with HOU drafting a QB, should the Bucs look out for or go (mildly) after Brandon Weedon? I don’t see a better backup QB coming open any time soon. Really too bad Glennon left…and he got screwed himself.

Guys his height that can anchor/ penetrate against double teams are a rarity.
And he’s got enough speed to bend the edge as a pass rusher.
If the Peahawks can develop his technique, he’ll be a dominant player.
I think he compares favorably to Michael Bennet.

I now I am not a member who posts a ton, but I think there will be non-stop trading in this draft. I have repeatedly commented we would see a lto fo trades. There is so much talent and each of those prospects have specific traits that some team is drooling over in each round.

Mixon has good size…maybe he could learn to block…but he’s the closest thing to Dalvin in the draft with speed and ability. Still Foreman put up much more consistent numbers in the same conference.
I’m OK with either they just bring different skill sets to the offense. Mixon more explosive than Foreman but Foreman perhaps the better power runner and for sure a better blocker.
Everybody has talked about pumping up our OL to protect our franchise QB. I get that but there is more to protecting #3 than just OL….OJ will certainly do his part at TE and now if Foreman gets drafted we’ll have a large body in the backfield to erase OL mistakes and perhaps buy #3 another second.

McCaffrey is Danny Woodhead at best, at worst he’s a slower Ted Ginn. He runs like a WR playing RB and he will get killed in the NFL if he runs upright like that in the NFL trying to run up the middle – also being 5′ 11 1/4″ and only 200lbs, again he’s going to get killed. I’m kind of shocked he was taken in the top 10 – but so was Ted Ginn – but Ginn ran a 4.28, at the time the Dolphins said he’s a jack of all trades and that’s why it was worth it. We shall see on McCaffrey, a lot of people really love the guy, I didn’t see it – but then again I’m just some nerd on a computer.

Doug Martin turned in two acceptable years out of five. He was not an exciting player…not a true gamebreaker…he was “solid”.
I get really excited watching #3…ME13…Brate…Marpet…Martin never excited me. Kareen Hunt…Marlon Mack…Perrine….these guys are just not exciting…could be but not now. That leaves only Mixon for excitement or Foreman in a move to get the explosion from the outside and TE and use a power running game to complement it.
Mixon and Foreman are the last two who excite me. I’m getting ready for disappointment. 🙂

So Evans is a slightly undersized safety, but has long arms, supposed to be a of a ball hawk but will gamble, also plays physical – good tackler. Hope this is the right guy, 5’11 200lb safeties sound a bit undersized, but depends on the build I guess. We badly needed two safeties, so we got one at least.

No Kevin. Many of us were pumped about Marpet. Marpet was a known commodity that happened to not go to a D1 school but J Evans as opposed to M Evans elicits no excitement from me. Safety was a moderate need, DE is a major need. For this, I would have rather given up our 3rd rd pick and gotten Cook.

This guy sounds like the first real free safety the bucs have had in forever. A true center fielder that can cover very well and lay a big hit when necessary. Glad to have you Justin! GO BUCS!

I wouldn’t be too worried about safety stats and certainly wouldn’t worry about .com draft site rankings. The Bucs had some choices and took their guy, so I assume they know what they’re doing. Hopefully anyways.
As for Ryan Smith I always go to the Ronde example – Ronde barely played his rookie year and in the social media age everyone would have said he’s a bust, he sucks, the Bucs blew it, etc – but it turned out quite well. Hopefully Smith can do that. I don’t think he will, but as a fan you should be hopelessly optimistic on picks.

Knock on him seems to be he always goes for the hit instead of wrapping up… we know how that can go. Also says he might be prone to getting faked out on play action due to his aggressiveness.

Five years to prove his worth and he hasn’t done it yet. There comes a time when a couple big plays toward the end of a season should not keep your roster spot.

The NFL.com take on Evans makes me feel dramatically better about him – I didn’t know much about him since all the other safeties kept getting mentioned. They said his 4.61 was after injuring his quad and he’s more of a 4.4 guy – makes a bunch of splash page. Awesome. His tackling is apparently why he fell – but you can teach tackling. I just hope in this p-word modern NFL those hard hits aren’t all 15-yard penalties. The garbage they would call against Barron and Goldson, just clean hits that looked hard, it was infuriating.

He’s an all or nothing player from what I saw, not what I want in my Free Safety. Took some horrible angles, got turned around several times. Texas A&M was always giving up big plays defensively.

At this point Joey, I think Dougie is our guy after his suspension. As RB deep as this draft is I think we may not draft a RB or we might take one extremely deep in the draft. I think we crapped the bed by not moving up for Dalvin. If we were going to go safety, Justin Evans, who I had never heard of, was not the guy I would have expected. Licht hasn’t given me any reason to doubt him but this smells like back to back crap 2nd rd picks in consecutive years.

Only thing about this draft is to remember the positions the Bucs took – TE and S are two spots where rookies rarely are productive right away, it generally is year two when they start looking like they belong. I like the picks but everyone just keep their composure if the kids aren’t starting week one. TE is the more difficult of the two so I’m not so sure that OJ will be a day one starter – and that’s OK, same with Evans.

So far Licht has been 3 for 5 on his 2nd round picks in the limited time we’ve seen them play:
Smith, Marpet, Spawn vs. ASJ, Agauyo.
But Agauyo was really a 3rd round pick that we traded to move up into the 2nd, so that one is negligible. Plus there’s always the small chance he puts it together and becomes good…

Honestly think that at the height of his potential, he would be a 1 on 1 matchup Safety/ Corner against with tall and fast WR’s and TE’s .
No guarantee’s in the draft. And Defensive back is a position that is very reliant on intelligence & instincts.
Can’t definitely say whether or not Obi has them. And for all I know Justin Evans could be significantly better than him.

Welp we still need a runningback and we drafted a guy I had us taking in the 4th round. I was pretty sure we were interested in him but I thought it would be later. All I will say if we stay with the WR’s and RB’s we have I am going to be very disappointed in Jason Licht. Didn’t we learn from last when we were having to sign guys off the street for both positions? But you guys are right we didnt need to draft Cook. SMH

Bonzai – I think OJ will make some huge plays, at the very least he’ll do as much as ASJ in 2015 if you project his contributions to 16 games. ASJ was a huge part of that 2015 offense when he was healthy and on the field. I only mean OJ might not be the starter – but then again he might since I suddenly started hearing Brate called a H-back last night so they might be starting both. I’m not as high on Brate as Joe is, but I still like him and he has a big role on the team, and might still be the starter for a while.

I’d like the Mack pick – he’s a player in the mold of Charles Sims, but hopefully is more healthy. Mack’s overall combine was really impressive but people focus on the 40 so much his 4.5 seemed ordinary. However he has great longspeed and I think he’s a much better interior runner than Sims and has the ability to be a 3-down back, even if it’s not in his rookie year. If the team thinks Sims injuries have just been bad luck then they should keep him around – as 3rd down back and sometimes slot WR Sims is a guy I hope the Bucs keep around – but if they take Mack it means Sims won’t be here after his rookie contract is up.

Bonzai I live in PA and have watched quite a bit of Conner.
Side Story: Many (20) years ago I was in high school and friends with a nice girl. About 10 years ago that girl had a nice little boy. That little boy and conner were both in the hospital together fighting horrible odds. Conner befriended that little boy and PITT allowed that little boy to attend any Pitt game he wanted. Conner was responsible for that.
He is a very good dude, and a very good RB. A punisher. He doesn’t have the elite speed but he is a pounder.

Why in the world did the Saints take Kamara? Wow… they signed AD who doesn’t fit their offense at all, and they sort of already have a good runningback. Anywho I got a feeling that Kamara could be good, really really good – just a vibe. The downside is he’s a muttonhead and going to a party city might not be the best fit, but he’s a power runner, could really give the Bucs a hard time. Then again he might not see the field. Still don’t get the AD signing for them – makes no sense.

Don’t Sleep on Jamaal Williams guys, he had a somewhat disappointing 4.59 at the combine, but improved it to a much better 4.53 at BYU’s pro day.
I don’t feel crazy comparing him on tape to Demarco Murray or Jordan Howard. He is an all around Back that just appears to be a natural with the rock in his hands. Doesn’t fumble frequently, good lateral Quickness, good vision, arsenal of jukes & moves, runs with a purpose (angry at times), and looks plenty fast on tape.
I wouldn’t be mad if we take him at 3.
There is so much Rb Talent in this draft guys. And I’m Confident in Dirks ability to utilize quite a few of the prospects remaining.

The more I look at the scouting reports on Justin Evans the more I love the pick. Guy is a leader (not a vocal leader) he fast , he hits HARD, One scout said he has the ball skills of a SLOT WR!!!! ME13 said he is a hard worker. He can play in space, is a WILLING tackler. The guy is a hard @$$ and will put in the work.

Bucs have no reason for a RB – Martin, when motivated, is one of the best running backs in the NFL AND it’s an odd numbered year. People are reading the coach and GM not talking about Martin as a sign that he’s going to get cut, but if they were going to cut him they’d do so before workouts in case he got hurt – that’s what I think anyways. What better way to motivate Martin than to make him pay for his big money deal with no guarantees. Absolutely no need to reach for a RB or give up picks for one – they are falling hard in this draft. Mack should be there in the 4th, at that value he’s fantastic – I’d love it and it would have no impact on anything but depth. Also fine if they went with something else – this draft is a success already.

I don’t see how they CAN trade back into the 3rd without giving up their 3rd from next year. Maybe if they could push it til a 2019 pick along with some late rounds tomorrow, but that’s highly unlikely any other team would accept those terms.

For those still hanging onto Doug Martin fantasies….you don’t mind starting the season 0-3 because for all the help he’ll be it’s three losses while he sits out his drug suspension…second year in a row he will have put a genuine dent in Bucs playoff chances.
But hey…he may blossom and break out from that 3 TD per year average. Maybe he won’t get hauled down from behind for the umpteenth time.
If we don’t get a back in the draft I guess I’ll be hoping Quizz and Barber can form a good tandem with some complementary play from Sims. I sure do not count on Martin who won’t even be there for the first three games.

My early overall grade B- cause lots of rb’s got snatched up. I really like Howard. I think Evans could beef up a little more, but he’ll be okay. Worried about him being a flag machine in the ticky tacky NFL. Love the Godwin pick for a nice rotation with Hump until he’s ready.

Koetter reallly likes Barber, and he and Quizz and Sims can get the job done short term. Plus they still may get Mack tomorrow.
We open with Miami, Chicago and Minnesota. We should go 2-1 at least no matter who is starting in our backfield. Much easier schedule to start the season.

Love the Godwin pick I really do but I am not at all happy with our runningbacks. Quiz is the only reliable one on the roster and he was on the street at the beginning of last year, that is less than ideal. If teams dont fear the run at all they will just sit back in cover two and make Jameis dink and dunk all day which requires the entire team to play perfect. That means no drops, no penalties, no poor throws no missed blocks you have to play perfect every play cause there will be no chunk plays when they can just sit back deep all day. WE NEED A RUNNING GAME FOR ALL THESE TOYS TO WORK!

Besides a cover 2 defense against us would be beautiful. A cover 2 defense means a Middle linebacker has to drop back deep to cover the middle. That won’t work against Howard. Good luck with that!

True, but you never know. Bucs have had guys off the street work well before. Not that I think we should sit pat. What I like about Quiz is that he came in from the street and worked his butt off.
I know he’s not a super star, but he’s a respectable talent.

Now that Foreman is gone there is still Perine who said himself that the Bucs showed him a lot of love. He would be a different style than Rodgers and would be great in short yardage situations. Conner is also a solid big man who says he models himself after Lynch which wouldn’t be bad.

This is a redo of WR last year with us relying on V-Jax and it blows up in our face. Relying on players that are not reliable (DOUG MARTIN) blows up in your face. I know nothing about this kid so I wont judge him but how do we not address running back and since we have no 4th now we know its pretty much over. I bet we jumped up to get Conner and when he was picked we took a guy with great upside that was there due to the ACL issue.

It’s clear the Bucs are fine with the RB’s on the roster. I suspect short of a trade Martin will be the primary “bellcow” for Koetter.
With the new TE & WR’s, and with more bulk on the OL with Marpet at C & Sweezy at RG, there will be room for Martin to run. It’s doubtful The O will see many stacked boxes as was the norm last last year.
I expect special teamers to fill out the rest of the draft card.
AND, perhaps the new KR is on the roster with Evans.
