“One Of The Best Weapons That You Can Have”

April 28th, 2017

Instant upgrade

Man, Dirk Koetter dropped all kinds of big-time love late last night on his new toy: all-around manbeast tight end O.J. Howard.

Koetter made it darn clear that he believes Howard is a dying breed that’s highly coveted across the NFL.

That’s why Koetter says “blessed” is what the Bucs were to have Howard land in their lap. Last week, Howard himself said on radio that his people told him he could go as high as No. 10 overall.

“In the NFL, I think still [the complete tight end] is one of the best weapons that you can have,” Koetter said. “Here’s a guy that’s got the speed to run down the seam and the power to block a defensive end at the line of scrimmage. And there’s just not many of those guys around.”

Koetter added he was “shocked that O.J. was still there.”

“This is an explosive player. He just plays inside instead of playing outside,” Koetter said.

Explosive plays. Ahhh, that’s Koetter’s phrase of 2017. And it appears he just gained a heck of a lot more of them.

Look how he utilized Tony Gonzalez at Atlanta…nuff said.

  2. USFBUC Says:

This was a nice pick. Still remember the podcast where TE was laughed at as the pick in the first round because we had Brate.

  3. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Thank you Jesus A-MEN !!!!!! GO BUCS!!!!!! Baker next please

  4. DallasBuc Says:

Don’t be so disappointed JBF. There is always a chance we draft Mixon with our next pick!

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Does this mean Dirk will do more than just run it up the middle on every first down even if the other team has 17 people in the box? I really hope last year’s disaster in play calling was Dirk adjusting to the sideline and was done out of issues related to injuries – but then again if you look at his history Dirk always come out of the box strong at new teams and then his offensive rankings go down down down in general. With that said I do think this will open things back up and hopefully get Dirk out of the rut he was in last year, I don’t think you forget how to call plays so I think everything is going to turn out quite well.

  6. NFLNut Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stumped for O.J. right from the start and explained that Jameis loves 2-TE sets and that OJ Howard would be the best possible pick as he is a true 3-down TE that never needs to come of the field … however I didn’t actually think he would still be on the board at #19 as the chatter was he could go high as #4 or at the lowest #10.

OJ is the type of player that could be with Jameis for the next 10+ years, have a HOF career and be one of the best TE’s to ever play the game!

    I AM STOKED!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Been saying how special he is and how lucky we would be to get him for a LONG time now.

    @USFBUC

LOL! Yeah dude I have a feeling that Joe (Lee) is going to be getting all kinds of crap for all the bogus arguments he pulled out of his rear end.

Idk how many times I tried to convince him that TE was absolutely a Need and that the best one in the draft was clearly O.J.

  8. Lord Corn Says:

Man im an Fsu homer and I wanted Cook but Howard looks like a generational gronk/Olsen freak prospect that could be a decade plus star

  9. mike10 Says:

I’m ecstatic about this pick. I have no idea how he made it to 19 (and clearly from the view inside his house, neither did he)

I think this pick helps us in 2 positions of need, other than TE. We need help on the OL which he brings, as well as depth at receiver.

  10. webster Says:

    @ nole….u owe me a jersey

  11. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    @DallasBuc

If we were to get Joe Mixon tomorrow night, we’d have one of, if not the most potent offensive units in the League.

Most talented TE, and the most Talented RB in the same Draft? Sign me up for that.

  12. Lord Corn Says:

in general I’d say this was a very entertaining and surprising draft. One of the most unpredictable for sure from the 2nd pick swap on. Wish I coulda been at the draft party at Sports Legends but had to settle for getting drunk and eating wings in Denver .. stoked as f*ck for OJ Howard. Rediculous value at 19

  13. pete Says:

I never thought that he would be there at 19.
    I am delighted!!!

  14. DallasBuc Says:

Blake- take Mixon with our 2nd and then trade right back up into 2nd for a kicker, I mean receiver. Draft whatever Mike Smith wants with whatever is left after that. I might lay off Licht for a while!

  15. USFBUC Says:

Man adding Mixon, Baker, Melifonwu, Cook, Ogunjobi, Walker, Godwin, or Jones would make this a great draft for the Bucs.

  16. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Dallas, Wow, a glimmer of hope for an end to your Licht bashing! I’m proud of you. I can see a post-Lovie, Realist-like turn around for you. Enjoy the ride!

  17. Rick Says:

@Lord Corn I am here in Denver as well. just moved out from Tampa in Feb. I spent 5 years with the Bucs internal security team. send me an email bambam841@gmail.com we should catch a game on TV and of course some wings/drinks. September can’t get here fast enough!!

  18. feelthepewterpower Says:

two-sport athlete from Alabama just like Winston, Joe – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkPJlOzNbQU

  19. ColoradoBuc Says:

There’s a lot more of us Bucs fans out west here – I am I Colorado Springs. The last Bucs game I attended was the 2015 opener when Winston there that pass to Humphries on the second play and resulted in a pick six. It was a bad day way back ten, but things are looking up now!

  20. RealBucFan Says:

Why does everyone want Joe Mixon? The Dude broke 4 bones in a girls face. He should be in prison. That crap does not deserve a 2nd chance. Aka Ray Rice. Open your eyes people.

  21. NFLNut Says:

Yo feelthepewterpower … OJ is also a national Champion AND BGS Ttitle Game MVP like Jameis too!!!!

  22. Guzzie Says:

Realbucfan….Mixon is the most complete running back prospect in this draft, would you want David Johnson in the backfield with Evans n DJax out wide, OJ n Brate inside, that’s the kind of talent Mixon has, Mixon was the number 1 RB recruit coming out of high school, he has Fournette size, CMac receiving ability, more speed than Cook, no injury history, he made a really bad mistake 3 years ago, she even said she forgives him and that she was partly to blame, if she can move on, you can too, if he was a grown man like Ray Rice (27) or Hardy (28) when this incident happened, no way he should get another chance

  23. Doctor_berto Says:

How are people arguing right now? I’ve been yelling randomly in the different bars I’ve been in tonight because I’m so happy. This is a generational tight end and possibly the best pass catcher in the draft. And to be honest, can probably show Dotson a think or two about blocking. If you’re having doubts, go watch the scouting report on him via YouTube, I immediately got erect.

  24. cmurda Says:

I’m all Dalvin Cook from the beginning but I’m also all good with Mixon. I just want to see a RB in RD 2. RD 3 at the latest if both of those guys get snagged before our pick. I’m concerned with that possibility.

Stoked about OJ Howard. That’s a thing of beauty that he was available to us without needing to move up.

  25. tnew Says:

shocked 18 teams passed on him. This guy is more athletically freaky than ASJ was, enjoys to block, was not overly used at Alabama (which is unusual). Now the euphoria has subsided. No way Licht couldn’ve traded down from 19 with Howard available…. How does he find an extra pick in round 2… I think next years class will not be as strong and I would gamble on the Bucs picking late. Would Cleveland trade that pick for our next years first.. probably not but.. Still sooo much talent on the draft board.

The Bucs picked a Pro Bowler tonight….

  26. Lunchbox Says:

Guzzie-best argument I’ve seen thus far for Mixon. NO ONE has been without bad decisions in their life. Mine weren’t caught on camera THANK GOD. I’m not a hypocrite that begrudges a man a second chance. I’m not saying it’s ok. It’s not. Period. But would you all feel better if Mixon spent his life in the projects? If so, maybe I should be there too. But for the grace of GOD, I got my chance. And I embrace it. Let Moxon have his chance. Be bigger than your hate.

  27. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    Well said Lunchbox..

  28. D-Rome Says:

Booger MacFarland was 99% sure the Bucs would draft a RB in the first round based on people he talked to. The “Man of the Hour” Ira Kaufman was clear the Bucs would not.

The Bears were crazy to move up to draft a QB. What a bad pick that shook things up!

  29. 1sparkybuc Says:

Mixon or Hunt would be fine by me. Can’t wait for tonight.

  30. JabooBuc Says:

I had hoped and suggested they would pick Howard from the very beginning but as things progressed after his performance at both the Senior Bowl and the combine I thought there was no chance he would be there at 19. Last night was crazy and there would have been no way to predict all of the talent that fell and some of the move made last night. Hard to find fault with those suggesting Cook at 19 when the likelihood of Howard being there was so slim.

  31. Kobe Faker Says:

First of all, OJ is already our best RAC reciever. Put him in the slot or motion him to open space against a helpless linebacker

I have no idea how defenses will contain our offensive firepower.

    THEY CANT BLITZ AGAINST US

Our runners will be running against only 6/7 men in the box

***dont sleep on Brate. Brate will be catching passes against mismatched defensive ends because the better pass defenders are covering other players

  32. Joeypoppems Says:

    ^^

Thats the beauty of 2 potentially dominant TEs.

  33. bucNation Says:

i think we have to get a rb rnd 2 & wait for receiver in 3rd or 4th with howard now on the team witch is crazy to say because i never saw that happening we can be real creative with how we use cam brate & howard lining either one up in the slot with the other with their hand in the dirt we can cause a lot of matchup nightmares without exactly having 3 wr in the game tbh i think this pick means less adam hunphries more than anything i don’t know how much of him will be seeing next year other than screens

  34. bucNation Says:

for me being a fsu fan with dalvin on the board & us not picking him up it was hard for me to root for this pick at first but the more i thought about it their is no way this guy should’ve fallen to us he’s a generational guy and jameis loves his tes so i see why dalvin wasn’t the pick but as definitely do need a stud in rd 2

  35. Dooshlarue Says:

Ah, NosBos did his disappearing act early this year…..how refreshing!

  36. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

Bucs should pick the BPA in the second unless they are stacked at the position. If that’s the case, trade down no more than half a round and pick up another pick in the third or early fourth.

  37. Kevin Says:

I still think we need another speedster at WR JUST IN CASE Djax goes down. He adds an element to the offense that will really hurt if he’s not on the filed. But at this point it’s hard to guess what Licht is going to do!!!
