“My Knees Hurt”

April 19th, 2017

Gerald McCoy has pain — in April.

There are typical red flags, and then there is the giant kind, like the enormous Buccaneers banner flapping in the wind near the entrance to One Buc Palace.

There’s also another prominent red flag in Tampa — the one Gerald McCoy dropped Monday when the team returned to work for the 2017 season.

Joe waited a couple of days to publish this post, just in case the Bucs’ media relations department or anyone else from the the team wanted to send Joe a clarification.

Nothing was sent Joe’s way.

Therefore, Joe will assume McCoy spoke the complete truth on Monday when he said, “My knees hurt.” The statement came when McCoy was talking about the closing days of his career and the big goals he has for them.

“I’ve never been one to shy away from carrying the load,” McCoy said. “I’ve been like this since I was a kid. It doesn’t phase me.  This is what I’m here for. This is what I truly believe God has made me to be, is to carry the load. I just have to figure out how to do it. All of the great ones do. And if I want to be considered one of those guys when my career is over, I have to figure it out. My knees hurt. I’ve played a lot of snaps, taken a lot double teams. Time is ticking. I’ve got a lot of work to do in a short period of time.”

It’s April — April! — and McCoy’s knees hurt. That’s a horrible sign — at least for Bucs fans like Joe who want to see a healthy, in-his-prime McCoy here for another three seasons.

There is no way to spin it otherwise. Seven full years into arguably the toughest position in the NFL and McCoy’s body has started its breakdown mode.

The man has had serious injuries. Some derailed him, some he played through, like the nasty shoulder issue in 2015, and now his knees are speaking up.

Joe’s hoping McCoy can squeeze out two more Pro Bowl seasons. Joe expects nothing more, and neither should any clear-thinking Bucs fan.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo’s knees hurt too…..Pablo works on hot Pasco County roofs by day and table dances until wee hours……Pablo also has to carry around Pablo’s elongated arc (like Hamus)…..so Pablo’s knees take a beating. Pablo knows GMC will suck it up and play…just like Pablo sucks it up every day”

  6. Bucs1991 Says:

I think he just meant his knees hurt from carrying the team for years now. He was speaking figuratively about his body breaking down in general not about his knees specifically.

  7. Tampabayucfan Says:

I’m not too worried about hurting knees….but if GMC starts complaining about his big toe…..look out!!!

  8. shouldhavedraftedefiert Says:

Yeah his heart isn’t in it anymore, I don’t think it ever really was. Great players though but we’ll get another year or two and then he’ll retire. Draft DT 1st round and let GMC coach him up!

  9. tmaxcon Says:

Congratulations to gaytor fan on the best highlight in Ten years with the Hernandez suicide. hopefully some video highlights pop up for viewing pleasure…. Next in gaytor news former choir boy qb spotted in a compromising position with a sheep

  10. bucNation Says:

think your reading way to far into this lol it was a throw away sentence he was saying it as a joke in a joking manner he even let out a little chuckle after. i’m sure his knees really do hurt just like any nfl player who been in the league for 8 years.. y’all F’n dumb as sh!t sometimes i swear
And how long do those vets with year-round-hurting knees usually last once it starts? Throwaway sentence? And you’re saying he was joking but then you say it he was serious? Make up your mind. McCoy wasn’t joking about anything on Monday.–Joe

  11. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Another way that McCoy is screwing the bucs in the 4th quarter, if he was quiet, the bucs trade him and get 2nd round pick, now he is again making zero impact when it counts

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucs1991

Carrying the team… Wow all he did was lead some of the most embarrassing defenses in NFL history. He never carried anything but a losing attitude and a mentally weak approach to the game

  13. Eric Says:

I completely agree bucnation. I didn’t really take it that seriously. Every Single Player that has been around 7 years has something that hurts. Especially linemen.

I do think McCoy is so nice that he is just happy to play the game. He’s content. He doesn’t have the fire that Kwon, Jameis, Ayers, etc have. He has the skill though.

He will have two more great seasons. This could be his best one yet, now that Jameis is holding him accountable. He didn’t have much of a standard to meet when influencing other players around him til jameis came. Now he’s battling his persona. His leadership. His desire. He has the skill and I pray that he just follows JW’s lead. Let Kwon lead the defense, Gerald.

  14. DHoft Says:

If he was worried about his knees in any serious sense, he would not have also said he plans on playing 13+ years in the league.

  15. Eric Says:

Btw if you think McCoy is average, or not even a top 5 DT, you’re an idiot!

    Period.

  16. Change is here Says:

    Bucs fans are idiots.

    Plain and simple.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m sorry, but the man plays defensive line. Of course his knees hurt. He’ll be 30 after this season. I don’t know about everyone else, but for me, I started noticing my body hurting a little more at 30, and it only got worse with age.

I can only guess at how much more so it is for a 300 lb defensive tackle. If anything, it’s a wake up call to McCoy that time is starting to run out. And really, that’s what his whole speech was all about.

    Mountain meet molehill.

  18. Steven007 Says:

Tmaxi, apparently you’re dyslexic because you mention your main man crush GMC (any time you mention someone this much, in or out of context, clearly you’re harboring romantic feelings for him) in posts having nothing to do with him and in a post that does have something to do with him you mention another player completely apropos of nothing. You are perpetually on your period, dude.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Miko Says
    “TRADE!!!!!”

I think that would be a mistake…but if some team offered a first and 4th this year and a first next year, I would jump at it. Could get his replacement AND extra picks that way.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Steven007

    lol. You nailed it!

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    Steven007

I have romantic feelings for buc playoff wins anything else is failure bucs will never win a meaningful game with a mentally weak locker room cancer like mccoy…

  22. Steven007 Says:

    Maxi –

Dude, you’re a troll plain and simple. When it looks like a troll (check), smells like a troll (check) and is name checked by multiple posters as a troll, it’s a freaking troll. This is your life. #trolllife. Own it. If your vaniga hurts get some cream. We ALL want Buc playoff wins. 31 teams fall short of their goal every year. If you can’t find any pleasure in the journey like the rest of us then that’s your problem.

  23. buccfan305 Says:

McCoy needs Vagisil again for his knees.

  24. buccfan305 Says:

I’d trade his A$$ in a heartbeat. May as well get something for him while you still can.

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

I have to shake my head sometimes at supposed “fans”.
Hopefully this is nothing serious and he mentioned it in passing. That his knees hurt is redundant for what the man does.
I’m sorry but you are kidding yourself if you think that the Bucs would have/are a better team without GMC.
To put it in perspective, we discussed yesterday Sapp vs. McCoy. HOF generational player compared to a very good player. A player on a very good football team vs. a guy on TERRIBLE football teams. Well, imagine those “terrible” teams without GMC. Can you say Cleveland Browns bad?!!!
This conversation is so dumb and repeated over and over. If you want what’s best for the Bucs then you root for this guy. Right?!
Unlike others, I hope that for the remaining of his career as a Buc that he excels and remains consistent. We are a better team with him than without.

  26. Steven007 Says:

    Maxi –

Let’s do some math here. If “anything else if failure” outside of Bucs playoffs wins (your words) and “the bucs will never win a meaningful game with a mentally weak locker room cancer like mccoy” (your words), why are you even pretending to be a fan? Using this logic the Bucs won’t win anything while GMC is still around. So why not take some time off until he retires because – news flash – he’s going to be here a while. Obviously you don’t believe your own words. Or you’re a masochist. Love hurts, maxi. “I wish I knew how to quit you, Gerald!”

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    Steven007

Name one game in 7 years mccoy dominated one damn game please… He’s ankle grab on Ryan a tipped pass good plays but your girl has never dominated a game nor even a series in 7 years that’s not great… I’m still waiting for you nut huggers to produce on field results as examples but all you got is his smile, peers like him, good in community and we are lucky to have… None of which have ever won a single game. 93 is a career loser who does not make those around him better…

  28. Gencoimports Says:

I knew this overreaction story was coming. I’m just surprised it wasn’t posted 10 minutes after GMC said it.

  29. DB55 Says:

Have some fckn respect, Tmax is a veteran who fought for this country which is way more that I can say for punk a$$ GMC and several of you possy ass idiots in here.

GMC is a biatch if you can’t see that then that your problem.

  30. Lamarcus Says:

Mccoy never had a signature game. Never. Turn that into data

  31. Steven007 Says:

    [yawn]

Maxi, this has been mentioned in (numerous) past posts by others who were nice enough to feed the troll. You obviously ignored or did not read it. You seem to constantly conflate mention of GMC’s capabilities by posters who ‘defend’ him. No one says he’s the best DT in the game (he’s not). No one says he would ever be confused with Sapp (he wouldn’t’ be). But aside from Donald, Suh and perhaps a healthy Geno Atkins, he’s very clearly in the next tier of dominant DT’s. The guy is double teamed for two reasons: he’s good, and there’s no one else on our line that scares anyone. That may change this year with Baker by his side. I hope it does. But your hate is so weird and misplaced. If a guy is on my team, and the leadership of that team likes him, that’s enough for me. Yanni loving GM Jason Licht has forgotten more football than you’ll ever know.

  32. Dewey Selmon Says:

It’s not his knees, it’s his mangina.

  33. Chargedcbh Says:

I totally agree with Bucs1991 Says: You can do better JOE. Seriously

  34. DB55 Says:

    Steve007

No one cares what you think.

  35. Bucs1991 Says:

    Maxi,

I actually watched the games when McCoy couldn’t play. There is a big difference when he is on the sideline and you would know that if you actually watched the Bucs on defense.

  36. tdtb2015 Says:

    Draft his future replacement!

I am not one to complain about his game day performance. He does what he is suppose to. But with a mind worrying about pain as a football player, I’m surprise he is still playing.

If available in the draft, get DE and DT for our future defense. Smitty will be gone 2019.

    In Licht We Trust!!!

  37. Steven007 Says:

You cared enough to comment, DB (how fitting).

  38. Bucs1991 Says:

Lamarcus, McCoy never had a signature game because there have probably only been three or four games in his entire career that actually mattered to that degree. The rest of his career the Bucs have been terrible and out of the playoff hunt. I admit that he had a couple opportunities at the end of last season and let us down. But he is a great football player and the team is significantly better with him.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

    Steve007

again please produce game changing plays. I’ll give that dude Pickgrin credit he did produce plays at one point although I disagreed with the impact on the game some of his plays had he made an effort. Again it’s the same group of choirboy loving character police who defend mccoy’s average play and the fact HE NEVER HAS ONCE STEPPED UP IN A BIG GAME WHEN HIS TEAM NEEDS A PLAY. NEVER ONCE… I am not blaming him for the loses I am blaming him for never making a play when it matters and letting his players down.

name calling from a keyboard tough guy like yourself is hilarious by the way. I appreciate your efforts. too bad your girl does not have the same creativity.

By the way if the Me First, Selfish Loser that is McCoy has sore knees why did he play in a meaningless pro bowl… The year he cried about playing hurt with a bad shoulder the entire season he also made sure that he did not miss out on his camera time at the pro bowl and played. If you are able to play in a meaningless pro bowl than the I played hurt crybaby speak is as meaningless as playing in the pro bowl against 8th and 9th alternates…

  40. D-Rome Says:

    Draft his future replacement!

I agree that McCoy’s replacement needs to be drafted this year or next year. Certainly not later than the 2018 draft. The D-Line needs to get younger.

  41. Bucsfan951 Says:

Tmaxipads hate for gmc comes down to two things… either gmc has video of tmaxipads wife with another dude or he has compromising pics of tmaxipad with another dude. Which is it tmaxipad?

  42. tnew Says:

I read into this he is a 7 year vet.. He has aches, he has pains and he knows that he is playing against a clock and reality is starting to set in. He is at the point that his experience and his physicality should both be at their apex. Being said, draft Malik McDowell. He has the ability to play the 3,4 and 5. He has the ability to spell McCoy at the 3 when playing in the 4-3 and act as a DE in both the 3-4 and the 4-3. MSU used the kid at nose in a 3-4 for goodness sakes. 6’6″, 295 runs a 4.85 (all of those numbers are JJ Watt like BTW)

All of this being said. Bringing Chris Baker in now gives Mike Smith the ability to run a consistent 3-4 front with McCoy, Ayers and Gholston (hopefully McDowell) as the DE’s with a rotation of Spence, Jaq Smith, Davonte Bond and LVD as outside linebackers. This should help against the double teams for GMC as well.

GMC needs to have the ability IMO, to get off of the field more than he does. Speaking of Sapp as we’ve done a ton lately, he had the ability to know when to raise his hand and come off the field, then somehow find his way back on it when it was time. This wasn’t coaching. Coaches didn’t say come off, coaches didn’t say come on. He did it on his own. I know I used to sit on pins and needles when he would come over a take a knee for a couple of plays that I considered “huge” only to cheer when he would come back on to make THE play.

  43. gotbbucs Says:

Get what they can get for him right now. A business decision is going to need to be made on him by next offseason anyway. Trade him before he has another press conference and lowers his trade value even further.
Say what you want about him, he needs to go somewhere else and rediscover himself.

You can’t continue to try and build a killer defense around this guy, he’s holding back possible progress. I’ll trade the 7 sacks that he’ll likely get in the 2nd quarters of meaningless games for a 2nd round pick this year and a 2nd round pick next year. Even that is probably more than they could get for him.

I don’t hate McCoy, I hate that he doesn’t produce when it matters. His body language in that PC looked like a guy at the bottom of a rope. The fact that right now he’s concerned with whether or not he’s going to be remembered as one of the greats really speaks to the dream world that he’s apparently living in.

  44. tnew Says:

Tmax.. I’m with you on the Pro Bowl thing. It REALLY rubbed me the wrong way when he complained (and Joe reported defensively) how he played hurt for most of the entire 2015 season, then he went to the Pro Bowl.

Go to Hawaii and hang out, but no need to take a useless snap at this point in his career.

  45. danr Says:

Apparently McCoy is the next ruud

  46. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    Joe,

I think he was speaking in a more general sense by saying his knees hurt. Not because of workouts but because of years upon years of being a DT. Anyone with as many snaps in a stance would have the same issues.

It does lead you to believe he won’t be playing when he is 34 or 35 years old though. Drafting Watt or Barnett would go a long ways in helping extend his career.

  47. rayjay1122 Says:

I agree that we need to start thinking about GMC’s replacement. I want weapons for Winston however the DL other than Spence is getting long in the tooth. This team still has several positions that need to be shored up.

  48. Steven007 Says:

    Maxi,

First off, kudos to you acknowledging one of the people who went to the trouble of producing something you asked for. They certainly didn’t have to do that. Second, as I have mentioned in other posts I wish GMC was more aggressive; I with he was meaner; I wish he was more impactful. But he is who he is, which is a good 3 tech DT. And he’s better than many others. And he’s clearly good enough for: Jason Licht, Dirk Koetter, Mike Smith, Jay Hayes, etc. That’s good enough for me. Not every player is going to be all world. As for accusation of keyboard toughguy? It’s your constant passive aggressiveness (emphasis on aggressive) that me and other have responded to. i.e, YOUR keyboard tough guy persona. I’d love for you to say any of your GMC comments to his face. You’d have ample opportunity to. Would NEVER happen of course. And you know it.

  49. tnew Says:

Guys.. do not kid yourselves either. I think he realizes this is sort of a contract year. After this year his dead cap PLUMMETS to $500,000. HIs contract gets really team friendly at the back end unlike most contracts that are heavily back loaded. He knows that the only way to make more coin is to have a Monster season. That will be the only way he could leverage a new deal that would make him a Buc forever (which I believe he wants).

  50. Tom Edrington Says:

Saw Gerald rolling out of his neighborhood in his custom Bentley last week. Keep in mind Gerald’s first contract came before the rookie salary cap, so it was a HUGE contract and his second contract was a HUGE contract. He was smart with the deal he got on his home in our community, used to belong to one of the minority owners of the Washington Redskins. If Gerald has been smart with his money, and looks like he has (didn’t go out and buy a $10 million house on the water), then he doesn’t need to work for the rest of his life. At some point, with another training camp in front of him, he has to ask his body and his mind if he wants to go through all this again. Guess is, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this is his last season.

  51. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Not worried. Have a feeling Malik McDowell will be in play @19.

All the noise about lack of effort are pure bs. If you watch the tape the kid is scratching, clawing, and fighting to the whistle on every play.

Throw that in with the fact that at 6’6 295 he can line up anywhere on the line, he can anchor against the run, and he routinely beats double/triple teams with ease, and he is an absolute freak athlete, and we’re talking about a steal of a pick.

  52. ARGH_M8E Says:

We are definitely worse without him (93) boys n girls, men n women. He’s commanded a double team every game, almost every play, every year that he’s been in the league. Does he piss me off at times, sheeeeeeee-it, does Pinocchio have wooden balls?! Pffffff let the literal police have fun with that one! Yup, drives me nucking futs!

    But…

ELITE DT’s are extremely RARE!!! U either draft one super early or overpay through the teeth for one who’s already gotten a little to a lot used up. Dang, I wouldn’t cry if we traded him for some draft picks if somebody is crying for a DT like GMC. More ammunition for moving around in this years draft.

Bottom line _ He’ll be on the team this year, and hopefully swaggy makes life easier for Geraldini, or vice versa. I’m personally pulling for another DT and keeping 93… But that’s just me, keep adding and and let’s ROLL!

  53. Steven007 Says:

Thanks, Blake. I’ll have to do some more Intel on McDowell. Also loving Barnett and Takk McKinley.

  54. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Has to be a jbf first. If my guy for some strange reason can’t be had this team may want to look into Blake’s guy McDowell. There you go Walter you were asking for a name Blake just gave you one. tdtb words should be taken serious. Finding his future replacement should be high priority st this point. I’ll say it again d@!! A saftey d@$! A DE. DT is What we need to be in search of. Hi Dave.

  55. Lord Cornelius Says:

    McCoy is weird lol.

But I’m pretty sure he’s made comments like this before (thinking last offseason actually) where he alluded to the age and health of his body.

Why keep asking for posters who find you ridiculous to name meaningful plays/games from GMC when all you do is poo-poo the valid examples given if someone does take the time to thoughtfully respond to your “challenge”?

McCoy is a good football player. He helps our team have a better chance to win on Sundays. 98% of all knowledgeable Bucs fans know this. Its not really even a question that we are better off with him on the team than without him. Yet you call him a “cancer”. The “leader of the losing culture”. You say that the Bucs will never win consistently unless/until Gerald McCoy is no longer on the team. You constantly berate, hate, name call and make fun of one of the better players on our team. The Captain of our Defense no less.

This bad and quite trollish behavior on your part got old a looong time ago. At this point its just annoying. Especially when you are bashing McCoy in so many threads that he he is never even mentioned.

Grow up dude. Quit trolling and stop constantly bad mouthing one of the better football players on the team you claim to be a “fan” of. Fans don’t act like that. Unless everything in their life sucks and they just want to spread their perpetual displeasure at life in general around a bit which I suspect is exactly what your deal is.

  59. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Joe tell him to pop up on joebucsfan.com and click on the link for Pinto Chiropractic. Maybe they can help ol Staypuffmarshmellowman93 a lil bit! Maybe he can be their spokesperson! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

  60. DevilDogBuc Says:

I’ve been reading and watching but i have to speak now. Gmc doesn’t stand out because the rest of our line isnt strong enough to win their one on one battles. Gmc gets doubled every play almost but now we have another DT in chris baker that also requires a double team cause chris baker is a beast.. Now defenses cant double anyone on our dline and lookout cause our defense will be alot tougher this season.. Speak softly and carry a Big MFin Stick..

  61. bucNation Says:

i love this site and all the content and love the bucs sometimes i just get to worked up about it haha. no disrespect to you guys who work hard on this site and put out this content i appreciate it. my comment early was out of line and i apologize, but to get back on the topic of mccoys knee what i’m trying to say is i don’t necessarily think he’s joking about his knees hurt because they probably do a little just like any nfl player but i think he was just using it as a point in his statement that he was trying to make basically saying he doesn’t have much time left and he knows it. again i apologize for earlier i just do believe it’s not necessarily a red flag

  62. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Am I missing something? Seriously? I get building a franchise and paying “some” attention to the future…but this season has me too focused to worry about which players will last more than two years including even #3. I HOPE he does…I expect he will..but it is the NFL.

Bottom line for me right now is I’m seriously beginning to think Minneapolis. We need the breaks in terms of health and continued growth of the team…but we’re ready. I don’t have enough time to worry about 2018..19…I think this team is ready NOW!!! Let’s get er done.

Now does that include GMC? Absolutely. Again he is not will never be Warren Sapp. But GMC on top of his game is dynamic enough to be a game changer.

I keep referring to career years. If GMC plays 2017 as the best season of his career to date…he won’t be HOF but he’ll be an incredible asset in the middle of our defense!!! That’s what I’m thinkin’ about….what do I expect from GMC in 17? A career year! After that it will all be gravy. If he breaks down in 18 that’s life.

  63. R.O. Says:

Ive never been a huge GMC fan. However, I believe he meant it figuratively not literally…

  64. tnew Says:

Malik McDowell fixes the Micheal Bennett mistake… If we don’t pull that trigger, Seattle gets our Dlineman twice. You want to help GMC, get that guy

  65. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Yea tnew I wanna know more about this McDowell dude.

  66. tnew Says:

NoSB.. Check out the Boiler Room critique… They are very very much draft dudes.. Waldman brings in Doug Farrar to help with the breakdown. It is 40 plus minutes but it is the good, the bad and the ugly.

  71. Jim Says:

  72. Nick2 Says:

  73. Reach87 Says:

Absolutely spot on. Unfortunately history shows he won’t get it or change. Nonetheless thanks for posting.

  74. GhostofTedford Says:

    @JOE

I have mailed several of your articles to GMC the last few years, highlighting all the comments from tmaxcon. Just tell GMC before each game that tmaxcon is in the stands and on his phone typing his usual anti-GMC rants. This will inspire GMC to play hard, through the pain, just to shut up tmaxcon.

    It will work……trust me

  75. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah so his knees hurt – when you’re 300+ lbs and make your living being a athlete, that’s what is going to happen. Heck I’m no athlete and I just sit at a desk and my knees hurt, that’s just getting old and having wear tear on them. Now if he said I can’t play because my knees hurt – that’s a different story, then I’d be worried – however I don’t believe any linemen, be it offensive or defensive, that has played in this league this long and they say they feel fantastic, nothing hurts, everything is perfect – they’re lying.

Anywho GMC has been an incredibly valuable part of the team for a long time and should still have a few years left – and if not the Bucs and can dump McCoy starting next year for only a $500k cap charge, which is basically nothing.

  76. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lol.
If you on a offensive or defensive line- your knees hurt.
From the first day of practice, until weeks (months!!) after the season ends.
If you are a pro, the season never really ends.

Its a pretty much chronic misery.
By year 7, looking at a line that STILL doesnt have a great DE( love Ayers attitude- But Simione Rice he aint),

    @tmaxx
Your venomous spew towards GMC is comical. Most on this board are knowledgable about the Bucs and find it ridiculous. GMC is not perfect but he is our best Dlineman. For you I hope the rest of our life is more balanced because if it is not you are in a really bad place. Go Bucs!

of course supposed to be ” your”

  80. Brandon Says:

My knees hurt too but it didn’t and still doesn’t mean I can’t perform at a high level. Having sore knees might seem like a big deal for the arm chair athletes but for people that compete and compete at a high level, sore knees, shoulders, elbows, is all a part of the game… even in the offseason.

I ordered yet another GMC jersey, only I removed the “McCoy” and added “Tmaxcon”.

I will wear it to all games this year.
