Koetter: I Want “A Badass Football Team”
April 29th, 2017And this is why Dirk Koetter is a hero to so many fans who call themselves Stick Carriers.
What’s a Stick Carrier? Koetter already explained that months ago.
Koetter addressed media today following the conclusion of the draft, and the head coach was asked what kind of identity he wants for his football team now that he’s been head coach for a while.
“A badass football team. How’s that?” Koetter said.
Awesome! This is why Koetter will be a Hard Knocks star. But it’s also a big reason the Bucs finished the season 6-2 last year. There’s a fierce drive from the top.
Back at the NFL Owners meetings in Phoenix last month, Joe asked Koetter a similar question. Here’s how that went down:
JoeBucsFan.com: Dirk, what would you say the personality is of your team? You’ve been around a ton of teams. What’s the personality?
Dirk Koetter: Oooh, that a good question. Personality. I think, (pause) I don’t know why this is popping into my mind, but hungry. Hungry. Hungry. I want them to be hungry, but I think they are that. And I think we’re pretty loose. I think we got guys that are loose and hungry and like playing football.
Hungry is nice, but badass and hungry is even better.
Make it happen, Coach!

Oh yea Coach K! Fire them boys up!
Sharpen those pencils!
April 29th, 2017 at 8:07 pm
What are the odds that the draft has influenced Koetter to keep his playcalling duties? Hard to imagine him giving them up this year with all these new weapons. Koetter probably already designing plays!
April 29th, 2017 at 8:09 pm
We all want a bad ass Bucs!
April 29th, 2017 at 8:12 pm
I FRIGGIN LOVE this Coach!!!!!!!
If we don’t win a SB with this guy it certainly won’t be for a lack of guts or effort.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:12 pm
I could not agree Mr. Koetter. Sounds like GMC and some of the other SOFT players are on notice.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:12 pm
Awesome. Hopefully Dirk can figure out how to play call from the sideline and be as good as he was when he was up in the box in ’15 and then we should be set.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:12 pm
Amen SPBF! I believe you are correct.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:13 pm
i could not agree more mr koetter.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:14 pm
Koetter will be keeping his playcalling duties. –Joe
April 29th, 2017 at 8:20 pm
Thanks for that nugget Joe. I was nervous about him giving them up
April 29th, 2017 at 8:24 pm
Would make no sense for Dirk to give up his playcalling unless he got someone to run his offense – and even then I think it make little sense at this point. The worst thing you’d do is install a new offense. However Dirk needs some eyes in the both yelling in his ear that he trusts so when he gets into that rut he was in last year of calling the same plays over and over. Or perhaps give Winston more options to change up the plays at the line.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:40 pm
I am not sure Rod but I think Jameis is close to having carte blanche
April 29th, 2017 at 8:42 pm
at the LOS that is.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:49 pm
Justin Evans and Kendall Beckwith will be bringing it. It’s amazing that we can get two 1st Team All-SEC defensive players in Round 2-3. We just added 2 hard hitting, physical players to our defense.
April 29th, 2017 at 8:50 pm
People that get suspended from things tend to be bad ass….just saying
April 29th, 2017 at 9:00 pm
Okay so we get our running back next year….if we’re not drafting too low.
I hope we’re drafting last.
April 29th, 2017 at 9:04 pm
It’s clear to me that Dirk and Mike Smith wanted to beef up our D and add some slobber knockers! No more running it down our throats like Dallas did to us. We have weapons and our D will knock your teeth out holmz! Bring it on!
April 29th, 2017 at 9:08 pm
Buc1987, we got our RB. I told you 2 months ago that we won’t be drafting a RB before Round 5.
April 29th, 2017 at 9:10 pm
Lovie read this and cringed
April 29th, 2017 at 9:14 pm
Dirk Koetter = Savage
April 29th, 2017 at 9:18 pm
Oh my damn, those Abes wings look good
April 29th, 2017 at 9:22 pm
I used to book and my cousin still does
interesting to see the lines move after the draft
Miami -2 47.5 vs Tampa week 1
and tampa is 40/1 to win the superbowl
“Offensively, we have the top 3 best talent in the NFL”
Kobe Faker
April 29th, 2017 at 9:29 pm
Our defense got a whole lot better this offseason.
April 29th, 2017 at 9:33 pm
This draft has me oh so happy. The best example is “Smile Away” by McCartney and Wings, the whooping stinky feet.
April 29th, 2017 at 10:08 pm
koetter you one bad mofo, love this dude, go bucs havn’t been this stoked since superbowl year
April 29th, 2017 at 10:14 pm
Lookayear fellow Buc Fans, I give our draft a strong..B-. Like our TE and Safety. selection. Even like the LB selection. All tough. And WE NEED TOUGHNESS!! However, I do want more meanness in the pass rush game. It is key for us. When our pass rush is there, nobody stops us. Hopefully, we will be watching the waiver wires. We have all of the ingrerdients (Please pray for the O line!). But our D Rush? Its the bread and butter. Like I’ve preached here from day one, you can score 50 a game..But can you stop your opponent from scoring 51?
April 29th, 2017 at 10:25 pm
Mike Johnson…Noah Spence has to rise up like Vic Beasley did for the Falcons last season. Jack Smith and Robert Ayers has to stay healthy. We have some decent pass-rushers they just have to stay healthy. I believe we will be blitzing more this year also.
April 29th, 2017 at 10:27 pm
So their QB’s will still be laughing as they have all day to throw. That is unless bu some miracle they find an UDFA DE or one gets cut that can actually get to a QB.
April 29th, 2017 at 10:36 pm
I’m really looking forward to Koetter’s offensive attack for this season. And I’m looking forward to see our defense dominate. Mike Smith’s second year will make us the team to watch. We will own the NFC South!!!
Go Bucs!!!
April 29th, 2017 at 10:37 pm
Dirk Koetter leads with a big f***ing stick and we are following in his footsteps!!
April 29th, 2017 at 10:40 pm
Evans a little higher than I wanted, but we made up for it with Beckwith….he’s going to beast for us as long as that acl heals right and he stays injury free. Kwon is STOKED!
April 29th, 2017 at 10:45 pm
No excuses for Dirk. Play calling needs to be much better this year.
April 29th, 2017 at 10:50 pm
Wow, just like that all the nerdy little draft junkies are gone! Thank God! Badass team sounds good!
April 29th, 2017 at 10:56 pm
What a wholesale change from the last coaching group to the current one. There’s nothing not to like about this current group of coaches and our GM. He was clearly being held back by the last head coach.
April 29th, 2017 at 11:10 pm
Just watched the Al Marpet preconference from a week ago or so and am jazzed about his move to center! If, and lots of ifs, Marpet excels at center like I’m confident he can, and IF Sweezy is the mauler he was at Seahawks, then our line up the middle will push the pile. Getting ride of Doug would be simply a stupid move, as he is by far the most electric runner we have when he’s full go. Thinking positively here, but if Doug is the real Doug – motivated and blasting – with the safeties playing back due to DJax, with no double teaming M Evans, and with OJ to contend with – Doug could have a very special year! Just zero need to push him out the door at this point.
April 29th, 2017 at 11:37 pm
I’m still digesting his offseason a bit – seems like we got jemeis some help- points that were proven was they like their safeties and oline – RBs could’ve definitely use help- how many seasons do we have to go through this? Yes keeping Martin last year was the right move- this year however, we needed another RB to keep him motivated- there will likely be slight changes at the oline which will impact the running game one way or another- safety group- WTF? They are average and could’ve used a more athletic guy- hard hitting safeties? Cool, let’s make them LBs (Barron)- I’m still digesting the whole thing
April 29th, 2017 at 11:40 pm
A high tier rb would’ve been nice but when OJ was still available there was no way they were letting him get away! All offseason has been about weapons for Winston and the top offensive weapon just fell in our lap!
I think this draft was pretty good for us. Our first three picks we got some legit competition for the slot. A centerfielder of a safety which this defense really needs. And the best offensive playmaker in the sraft fell to us at 19. Hard to ask for much more considering our needs.
April 29th, 2017 at 11:47 pm
QB Winston
WR Williams
WR Godwin
TE Brate
TE Howard
RB by committee featuring Redemption-Martin
The vaunted Bucs oline featuring Marpet/Smith/Sweezy
Yes! Howard said Sweezy who is also in the redemption road.
Winston will not tolerate anything less than inspired football.
Speak softly.
Carry a BIG STICK!
April 29th, 2017 at 11:49 pm
Howard forgot the cherry on the sundae:
WR Desean Jackson
April 30th, 2017 at 12:07 am
Yeper..Play callin needs to be better..as somebody here mentioned. But we better HAVE THAT Defensive RUSH>>>????? It is our key….
April 30th, 2017 at 12:26 am
Howard forgot Mike Evans. Who is Williams?
tickrdr
April 30th, 2017 at 12:30 am
DBS – I think the addition of Baker is going to really help our line. He has quietly been one of the better D linemen the past few seasons. That and growth of Spence should increase the pressure on opposing QBs. I still think we have work to do on defense but that will come next year in FA and draft.
April 30th, 2017 at 12:44 am
I was wondering the same thing…. Williams? Anyhow, we made a few decent moves on defense between FA and the draft. The biggest thing here, concerning the D, pass rush, right? Well, let’s look at it from this perspective… Our beloved front office staff just added some serious weapons on offense. This will keep the defense off the field, helping them to stay fresh while also keeping the opposing offense from being able to generate too much of a rhythm. THE best additions to our defense were not Baker and Wilcox, not the draftees or any UDFA that may be able to come in and generate a pass rush or lock down a receiver….. It’s OJ, D-Jax and, probably, to a much lesser extent, Godwin
April 30th, 2017 at 12:49 am
Koetter’s play calling was atrocious at times last season. Jameis should have vetoed some of those stupid plays. He’ll be able to get away with more this season because of all the weapons but I swear if he resorts to running Charles Sims straight up the middle over and over and over again, I’ma have a seizure
April 30th, 2017 at 1:39 am
Yeah who is this Williams?
This receiving corps is looking pretty deep. They can afford to keep an extra receiver or running back if they don’t have a true fullback. I’m thinking Reedy, Martino are gone. Huff will stay. So will Martin. I’m also rooting for Derel Walker to get a chance to play a bit too. Very deep receiving corps… Tight end just got a whole lot better too… are they gonna roll 4 TE’s?? Brandon Myers quietly makes a few plays but between Stocker and Myers they can play some H-Back /Fullback…
Stocker is too fragile tho. Maybe gets cut so OJ can rock #88 :-p
April 30th, 2017 at 2:28 am
I’m sure he meant Evans but was probably thinking of Mike Williams who was drafted by the Chargers at 7.
April 30th, 2017 at 4:27 am
Call me crazy but I think Stocker will stick over Meyers, and they will definitely keep Alan Cross.
April 30th, 2017 at 7:34 am
@Howard – That was list was funny playa!!! Well done😜
April 30th, 2017 at 7:37 am
UDFA Freddie Stevenson signed with Chicago wtf is going on, thought he be coming to the Bay for sure:(
April 30th, 2017 at 7:40 am
Lynch (49ers) scooped up KD Cannon, damn… Would’ve liked to seem him give it a go in training camp.
April 30th, 2017 at 7:50 am
Carolina has signed LB Ben Boulware, WR Fred Ross, DE Bryan Cox Jr
April 30th, 2017 at 8:35 am
With Godwin /OJ/Sims, Koetter needs to get the short quick passing game to be effective
It will get Jaboo in rhythm and loosen up the deeper routes
I think we now have the personnel to run no huddle with the addition of Godwin and OJ
**the offensive power in the NFC South is staggering. Every team is going to score close to 30 pts per game
April 30th, 2017 at 8:41 am
Hard to imagine a better draft IMO. Hate to say it, but pressure is on jameis. Bucs O is loaded with weapons. If jameis improves, we will be tough to beat.
April 30th, 2017 at 8:56 am
Agreed
Thought it will take longer for licht to acquire this kind of talent to surround Jameis
Jameis has been given all the talent and weapons. Everyone will know at the end of this year if he truly is a franchise QB
**dont want to be greedy, but still would love to get Rashad Greene, who im positively will be released in jacksonville
April 30th, 2017 at 9:37 am
Howard who the hell is Williams?
April 30th, 2017 at 12:52 pm
At least he didn’t say youngry.
April 30th, 2017 at 2:04 pm
Howard apologizes to his fellow stick-carriers for the slip of the keyboard.
The Bucs offense shall feature the GREAT, the one and ONLY….Mike Evans.
The only receiver on planet Earth who can make Johnny Manziel look good!
April 30th, 2017 at 3:13 pm
Hey Joe right now Americas Quaterbacks needs an Americans back up.
If we truely want a complete football team, we desperately need a backup quarterback. Ryan Griffin and the Colorado QB are not the answer.
If in Licht, I’m signing Ryan Fitzpatrick first thing Monday morning. He’s the best FA QB available and was a 30 pass td guy just 2 seasons ago. Until we can find a long term backup, Fitzpatrick is an NFL vet with TONS of experience and he can step in and win us a couple games.
April 30th, 2017 at 4:19 pm
I’ll tell ya, I like Humphries well enough, but the WR from Boise we signed as a UDFA could give him a run for the money. Plus, McNichols could also fill that spot at times. I’m thinking Chuck Sims is on the hot seat. That Arthur Duncan running style ain’t working. Lawrence Welk could’ve run him out on stage once a night. Only the best will survive from now on.
