It seems like the Bucs agree with Joe Bucsfan…Shepard’s not a top 3 receiver. The Panther’s told him he is…go to the team that believes in you (simple). Great opportunity for Shepard and I’m happy for him. If I were to choose between our DJax 1(b) or Shepard our 3rd…the bucs made the right call. I agree that Shepard’s a great special teams player, but it’s a positive that we can’t keep him because we are building too much quality on the team. Big step forward!
I love Shep and I’m disappointed to lose him, but he really wants to continue to develop as a legitimate NFL receiver and I don’t think his potential role with the Bucs was very enticing with the amount of talented pass catchers we’ll have on our team by the time the season starts.
I like Shep…acknowledge his ST prowess and the fact that he did make some big catches for us.
Serious question though because I can’t really remember…old age does that to you. 🙂
Is it just me or did Shep also drop some catchable passes. Who has better hands….Shep or Hump? Shep or Brate? I do not remember Shep as horrible hands but he did seem to be a bit inconsistent…but again perhaps that’s just my bad memory.
Here’s the bottom line. There was an opening last year for any one of our backup recievers to make a name for themselves, and none of them did. Evans was seeing braket coverage and none of our other outside recievers could beat any other teams #2 corners. It says all that really needs to be said.
I like Shep, and would have liked to keep him, but the resigning of ST Ace Josh R takes the edge off. I still think the Bucs will a draft a receiver. Throw in the addition of DJax, Possibly VJax and Murph returning form injury and it appears the Bucs felt suring up the Corner Depth was more of a priority, Im good with it. Hope Shep does well, just not against us.
A bit disappointed- but as someone else said I understand. I still think he has a chance to contribute at more than just special teams, I think he showed enough last year to justify that belief. Won’t surprise me at all if he gets 600-700 yards next year, or if he doesn’t catch a pass.
What angers me and why I choose angry as my response has more to do with the fact that he went to a division rival who will be milking him for as much pertinent information as possible. Offensive, defensive, and player tendencies, tells and other info that only a player in the same locker room in the same system for the past 2 years would be able to spill on. Not good.
1. go to the team that believes in you (simple).
————-
Anger. Why don’t the Bucs believe in Shep? He’s a captain, he’s a ST ace and he avg 14.2 ypc 2Tds in limited play vs Hump’s 11.3ypc 2TDs.
2. If I were to choose between our DJax 1(b) or Shepard our 3rd…the bucs made the right call.
————————–
Confused. That’s what’s puzzling, they gave the same money to Josh Robinson.
3. because we are building too much quality on the team.
——————
Disappointed. Louis Murphy does not a better team make. Huff certainly doesn’t inspire confidence and as much a I like Hump he had to miss a game last yr bc of concussion. Never know how that plays out long term.
Carolina signed Shep and let go of their #3 and #4 WRs. And they paid him the same $$ we paid Josh Robinson who isn’t a captain, doesn’t make as many plays and didn’t play many, if any, def snaps.
Isn’t Shep the guy who hypes-up the locker room? Now GMC can take over that duty.
Buc4Lyfe79 Nailed it. Shep is a former QB and has serious foot ball IQ. He had a huge game against Chip Kelly’s 49ers and was first to remind Chip that he had cut him when he was with Philly. He has a chip on his shoulder. He will feel dissed by the BUCs and spill the beans to our Division rival. Shep may be getting played by the panthers org.
Great role player and hate to lose him to Panties. We have a new age world class receiving core and great opportunity to improve special teams in all areas so I’m good with it provided our GM feels same way
So the cats allowed gin to walk and followed that by allowing the speedster Philly Brown to walk. I’m looking more and more forward to seeing them again next season.
Can’t keep’em all guys. Money rules professional sports. You can throw Loyalty out with the bath water. Make your bank Mr.Shepard. Nobody but You will care 20 yrs from now when you’re sittin in some pain clinic gettin your meds from all of those football injuries. So get it while the gettin’s good. Panthers showed him the money and he took it. And..Good Luck to you Shep
I voted disappointed. He was a great special teams player and showed he could play decent at WR and made a couple of great TD catches in SF and against CHI, if I recall correctly. He’s a guy who worked hard to get to where he’s at and earned his payday. I will miss him and hope he does well, just not well enough to keep us out of the playoffs.
Overall, I think the team has done a good job in FA. We re-signed Daryl Smith it sounds like from a video on the Bucs website so we are probably set at LB now.
I wish we had more picks to fill some needs but I will just have to wait and see what the team does in the draft. Personally, I would love to see us make some moves to trade future picks to get the players we need this year.
It’s all good we re signed Josh Robinson who was top ten in special teams tackles. A rookie can fill in for russel Shepard he was expendable as far as the direction Tampa is going in. Trust licht and the process
@luvmybucs I’m with ya, he sided with the enemy. Understood and respected, but still don’t like it. Knowing is sometimes half the battle. And he knows the system. Stopping it is another story.
He had 2 tackles last year. Do you special teams ace guys realize that? Josh Robinson/Russel Shepard, Russel Shepard/Josh Robinson. Whats the difference? We signed one of them back and let the other one walk to a team that is obviously over-valuing him.
Good teams do not cry over this type of spilled milk. It’s time Bucs fans start seeing what is potentially being built here and quit worrying so much about thsee kinds of transactions. The upside just wasn’t there.
Everybody is worked up over a #5 reciever and right now this team doesn’t even have a starting caliber Center.
Ok, DallasBuc just had the closest thing that I’ve not scrolled past on purpose that was even close to giving props to Licht!!! Only DB55 acknowledged it… Usually there’s a parade of DallasBuc hate when he’s so negative… I believe there should be a standing ovation in this here thread for DallasBuc’s discreet attempt to be positive! You go Dallas!

Should have an “Understanding” button.
I had to vote pleased because I am not confused or disappointed.

It’s more then talent you have to weigh chemistry.

Respect the fact the Brotha got his money
But unlike these college kids coming into the league – he had a choice.
An he decided to side with enemy
He’s dead 2 Me Now

So the Kitties lose Ginn and gain Shepherd.
The Bucs lose Shepherd and gain DeSean Jackson.
I am totally OK with that.

Bottom line is shep fills a roster spot/need for the next 5 years and provides solid character. Can you say that about djax? NO
