Koetter: “We Don’t Have Too Long”

Dirk Koetter talks chemistry

Lightning fast DeSean Jackson is now a Buccaneer. Ok, but now what?

Dirk Koetter and DeSean Jackson talked about a great challenge that comes next.

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is a young quarterback who hasn’t played with a super speedy receiver since Donteea Dye was dropping balls from him two years ago.

Jameis had super fast and quick chemistry with Vincent Jackson and Cameron Brate in 2015, but not with Mike Evans. That took a year to come around.

So Joe asked Dirk Koetter today about the bonding and big-money, deep-ball receiver DeSean Jackson and the timetable to get them on the same page.

JoeBucsFan.com: How much time does it take for a guy like Jameis to acclimate with a super speedy receiver just to get that timing down?

Dirk Koetter: I think that’s different. Some guys just have a knack of being easier to throw to than others. And I’m anxious. It’ll be like the third week of the offseason program, so early May, we start back April 17, early May before we see those guys back on the field together. You know, it didn’t come fast for Mike [Evans] and Jameis. I don’t think it’s a set timetable. A lot just depends on the guys. I’ll be anxious to see that. It can be fast, but it can also take a while. We’ll just have to see. We don’t have too long.

Joe hates to pour cold water the glorious signing of DeSean Jackson, but it could take a while for him and Jameis to find a rhythm and chemistry.

Jackson acknowledged that, too, and he said he would “get with Jameis” within two weeks to start throwing. Jackson said it’s nothing more than repetition and communication and seeing how it goes.

That chemistry will be key. As Koetter said, some guys are “easier to throw to.” Joe’s hoping Jackson is one of those guys for Jameis.

  1. Supersam Says:

The only downside to this signing, Winston has a putrid deep ball. And cousins was much more accurate. It’ll be interesting indeed.

  2. Trubucfan22 Says:

Just being on the field will be a blessing for the bucs offense. Even if the chemitry is a little off to start the season, defenses will still have to defend against the potential they have. Desean attracts a big cushion and usually safety help. This only helps every other player on the team. The chemistry between DJ and winston will come, until then the rest if the offense will reap the benefits.

  3. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And sukasam has a putrid eye for talent. Suckasam pro mr. Glass marita.

  4. Name Required Says:

Is it a putrid deep ball or just a lack of WR talent?

  5. Matt Says:

Supersam, I thought the same thing till I saw some of his throw to djax, they weren’t all that accurate. Jameis should be fine throwing to him.

  6. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Next season will be pick your poison. Load the box over top will be breezy. Stay two deep and Dalvin’s work day will be easy..

  7. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Name don’t ask that lame that question. He still butt hurt over us taking Fameis instead of mr. Fragile. The check down king.

  8. ben Says:

Lets hope Winston has improved his accuracy as his deep ball in the past really sucks!

  9. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Someone give this man a playbook please.

  11. R.O. Says:

We all know JW is not an accurate deep ball passer…. Ssssoooo. Speed won’t be any good if we can’t hit the throws.

  12. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Wooo and you gone have to watch his face for at least 15 years.. I love it.

  13. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Them hater on speed dial. He must hittin some I mean first QB ever to toss back to back 4000 yards smart guy.

  14. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Best line: Jackson said “… he would “get with Jameis” within two weeks to start throwing.” That’s the best news I’ve read in weeks Joe. Everyone was so concerned earlier that Desean would only make it to the mandatory practices. Sounds to me like he’s ‘all in’ at this point like the rest of the Bucs, and that’s great news.

  18. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Bspn asking dumb questions like will ever play for cali he kept saying I feel Tanpa is threes best situation for me. People commenting on him not wearing anything that says Buc. You cats look for anything to cry about.

  19. Sunny Says:

Plus is JW overthrows the deep ball , I think it is lack of speed. , prob can stay the same and be perfect .

  20. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Jameis does not have a putrid deep ball. He just had a putrid RT and a lack of speed at the position. Jameis spent all of last offseason practicing with Evans, VJax, and ASJ as the suspected receiving targets for the season.

He also spent a lot of time with Brate and Humphries.

Oops. No Vjax and no ASJ. But if you notice, Jameis put up very accurate numbers with Evans, Brate, and Humphries – guys he had developed chemistry with.

Where he lacked chemistry was with the Shephards, Dyes, Martinos, etc. He spent all offseason NOT practicing with them as the 1’s or even 2’s on the offense. This season the Bucs should experience more stability in the lineup, giving Jameis time to further his rapport with the above and developing it with Djax.

THIS IS WHY I KEPP STRESSING THAT THE BUCS DRAFT AN ELITE WR TALENT RIGHT NOW – THIS SEASON! It is such a rare blessing in the NFL to have a young duo like Evans and Jameis. Adding another elite young WR and letting them develop chemistry over the next 5-10 years would be a breathtaking thing to watch. Let’s see if the Bucs can be foresighted enough to see and act on this amazing opportunity.

  21. Pit Says:

Jameis deep ball is more accurate then Cousins.

  22. Bucski89 Says:

The only reason why Famious didn’t have the chemistry with ME was that during his Rookie season, ME wasn’t available during off season workouts & training camp…That hammie had him sidelined the whole time. They couldn’t development during the season.

  23. Dave Pear Says:

It’s all about the speed on deep throws. Remember when Marino had “The Mark Brothers? Well Mark “Super” Duper told Marino he could NEVER overthrow him. According to Dolphin myth… Marino could not ever overthrow Duper. I actually heard this rumor from Duper himself. He was dating my girlfriends best friend at that time.
If DJax is that fast all Jameis has to do is throw the ball as far as he can and DJax will catch up to it, or maybe slow down for it.
I’m all in for DJax. I can’t wait for the season to start.

  24. Kobe Faker Says:

Jaboo always threw the ball deep very well in FSU

Throwing deep to DJax will be instantaneous. Djax is a smaller speed demon. He gets contact near the line AND AFTER THE BREAK he doesnt get touched till catch point and it is easier for jameis to time the location and speed.

ME deep routes are very difficult to pass complete and judge. ALL THRU OUT the route, ME and the defender is bumping nonstop and the referees allow this physicality. Every exact same route Evans run can be different depending on how much contact

…We still need a slant LOS RAC skillset reciever…the underneath middle of the field should be WIDE OPEN

    ….

  25. Not there yet Says:

New quarterback New offense so this is nothing new. They’ll be done because no one wants this to be an excuse for lack of offense. It’s obvious Joe not a negative and Winston went through this with Evans

  26. USFBUC Says:

Kobe and NosBos are right on this guys. Jameis was more accurate at FSU than he has been as a pro. I don’t want to say this will be like the 2007 Brady-Moss type numbers but Winston was putting up 4000 yards without a real secondary receiving threat. Barring any injuries I think Winston goes over 4500 yards and 35 TDs.

  27. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Way to stand up Buc faithful. We must not sit and allow these infiltrators to take shots at our beloved QB. I’m off and watching muthaf@$!s😠.

  28. Tampa Tony Says:

You can still be a fan and be critical and hope JW improves on his accuracy and protecting the football

After 2 seasons he’s not perfect 32 games and he’s a inconsistent turnover prone qb those are the facts until he proves otherwise. If he went to UCLA or Texas or another school maybe the FSU nuthuggers would be a bit more open minded and unbiased about his sloppy inconsistent play

  29. James Walker Says:

Jameis is the best in the NFL at crossing routes. With Jackson’s speed that could be a real knife in the heart of any defence.

  30. James Walker Says:

There is nothing wrong with Winston’s accuracy. If he was 100% accurate people would complain he doesn’t run enough.

  31. Tampa Tony Says:

James Walker- re watch the last 32 games. He’s a very streaky passer when it comes to throws needed to keep drives alive and on 3rd down. If he was 100% I definitely wouldn’t be complaining at all

  32. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Everyone has an opinion, and pointing out Winstons deficiencies doesn’t make you less of a Bucs fan. I just can’t stand the posters who constantly post negative and never say anything positive about Winston. He has good points and bad points to his game still. Some people just harp on the bad and overlook everything good he does.

  33. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Tony, actually the Bucs were the 6th best offense on third down, one spot ahead of Atlanta. And that’s with a less than average running game.

  34. BuccaneEric75 Says:

As for QBs, Winston was 5th in the league on passing conversions on third down.

  35. BuccaneEric75 Says:

It keeps getting better. Winston was 4th in the league on 3rd and long!

  36. chipbuc Says:

Tampa Tony the only inaccurate thing about Winston is the same old tired crap you spew about his short comings. How about coming up with a new bitch about him, it’s getting old. PS I will take crappy old Winston over 90% of the league QBs right now and he’s only 2 years into his career. My god give him a break!!!!

  37. Louis Says:

Now we will get to see how far James can chuck it!

  38. Tampa Tony Says:

    @Eric

How about the clutch throws needed to extend drives or when the Bucs needed a score to win or tie a game (Rams, raiders, cowboys, saints) are all shinning examples of those short comings

I love his pocket presence, improvisation skills, leadership and arm but he still has a ways to go until he’s a franchise qb

  39. Tampa Tony Says:

Chip- 90%? That’s only 3 other QB’s give me Rodgers, Carr, Ryan, Brees, Stafford, Luck, Brady, Roethelisberger, Wilson and maybe even Prescott over Jameis right now. Maybe not all for the long term but to win a playoff game or a week 17 game to go to the playoffs I’d take all those QB’s over Jameis.

  40. Jamonte Manley Says:

@Tony Eric came to you with all facts and all you could do is come up with 4 games in which he probably didn’t do well in on 3rd down?!? @Nole I love your passion for our BUCS and pulling every BUCS posers that talk negatively our team. Keep it up

  41. BuccaneEric75 Says:

You’re talking about extending drives. Third down conversions do that. That’s the money down. Of course Winston can improve his accuracy. It’s just that his game isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. He is by no means a bust.

  42. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Rodger that Manley..

  43. DR FEELGOOD Says:

OJ Howard and Cameron Brate across the middle of the field will be deadly with DJax and ME13 doing their thing!! Unless Dalvin, OJ, or an ELITE WR are there when we pick, I would go BPA, which I think will be DE, CB, or OL. Wet dream alert!!! Imagine the current Bucs with Corey Davis!!! WOW!! Who in the hell would be able to defend that?

  44. Buc50 Says:

If we draft a TE in the first round I just might throw a brick through my TV. We need a RB and another WR.

  45. NFLNut Says:

    Tampa Tony stated:

“Chip- 90%? That’s only 3 other QB’s give me Rodgers, Carr, Ryan, Brees, Stafford, Luck, Brady, Roethelisberger, Wilson and maybe even Prescott over Jameis right now. Maybe not all for the long term but to win a playoff game or a week 17 game to go to the playoffs I’d take all those QB’s over Jameis.”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA … you are goofy!

Jameis had a higher QBR as a rookie than Derek Carr had in each of his first two years in the league. He and Dak had nice years last year but were playing behind the two best offensive lines in the entire league while Carr had perhaps the best receiving cast in the NFL in Cooper, Crabtree, Holmes and RBs that can catch and Dak had great receivers and the most dominant running game in the entire league … I’d take Jameis over both of them, especially Dak in a winner-take-all game right now 100% of the time!

As for Matt Ryan … please … I’d take Jameis over him 100% of the time as well … the dude had an all-world supporting cast … in 2015-16 he had a poor year … and Jameis is 3-1 against Ryan already and just started playing.

As for Russel Wilson … you’ve got to be kidding me. He is the most over-rated QB in the NFL and I would take Jameis over him 100% of the time as well … it’s not even close between those two.

Rethlisberger, Luck and Stafofrd … those three guys are great and the three guys that I think are in the 2nd tier of QBs along with Jameis … I’d take Jameis over all of them “going forward” but in a one-game winner take all RIGHT NOW I do think a case could be made for any of them.

As I see it the QB tiers are as follows:

TOP TIER: Brady, Rodgers and Brees

2nd TIER: Roethlisberger, Luck, Jameis, Stafford, Cam (if healthy and head screwed on right)

3rd TIER: Ryan, Wilson, Rivers, Manning, Dalton, Mariota

4th TIER: Flacco, Dak, Wentz, Carson Palmer

SYSTEM QBs: Cousins, Alex Smith, Tyrod Taylor, Sam Bradford

  47. Tampa Tony Says:

Eric- His game isn’t awful by any means but I expect big improvements going into year 3.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

Well my verdict is in and Tony you we’re exposed by Eric.

Then again who gives a rat’s ass?

We appreciate Tony to come on here in dissention of our QB at every turn.

Can’t have it all 90 % positive for Jameis on this site. We need balance.

  49. Trubucfan22 Says:

Djax will run the deep routes. But his best attribute is his ability to get yac. Which means he will turn a 5 yard slant into a 40 yard pass play. Speed isnt just for running routes. The threat of him going deep keeps CBs off of him so he can work underneath them too.

  50. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, I agree! We need guys in here for balance. It wouldn’t be fun if we were right all of the time and thought logically like we do!!😛 Uh oh, shots fired! Seriously, though, Winston isn’t great yet, and we can’t expect him to be. I think the main problem is that we’ve never had a franchise QB before and a lot of fans see the finished products of Rodgers, Brady, Roethlesburger, and think they were great from the start. THIS is how QBs develop. It takes 3 or 4 seasons to really get going. If you look at Brady and Bens stats for thier first few seasons, I think people would be surprised. Andrew Luck was hailed as the second coming, but can’t shake the INT bug. I wonder how many on JoeColtsFan are saying he’s a scrub? Probably not many. Give the kid time and don’t roast him while he’s still learning the Pro game at 23 years old. He doesn’t have to be a top 5 QB to take us to the SB. He’s got that “it” factor that can elevate his teammates. Do us Buc fans forget the likes of DeBerg and Erickson? You may complain about Winston, but he’s nowhere as pathetic as those guys when we had them. Be glad we have him.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

It’s okay Eric. Some of us out here actually know why Tony says what he says.

  52. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

Hate to admit it but Im a little worried about jameis being able to hit desean on cross routes slant passes accuratley. That speed may cause a lot of balls thrown behind and possible interceptions. They need to get on it asap

  53. FutureBucsGM Says:

Okay let’s think about this, DeSean did well with Donovan (2 low), Mike Vick (2 high) and Nick Foles who was more like Kirk. All Jameis has to do is throw it up in bounds. DeSean will go get it. If he doesn’t, best believe DeSean is going to let Jameis have it. Nick Foles as a backup would be interesting.
