“His Upside Is Ridiculous”

Raves about young teammate on national radio

Bucs defensive lineman Will Gholston is a soft-spoken guy. Coming from his upbringing, he is an inspiration.

But Gholston, for whatever reason, just isn’t comfortable talking to the Fourth Estate.

Last week, after being re-signed by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, Gholston made a rare radio appearance when he dropped in on “Late Hits,” co-hosted by Alex Marvez and former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Marvez asked him what he thought of pass-rushing specialist Noah Spence. Gholston, for maybe the first time Joe ever heard him, sounded genuinely geeked about Spence.

Alex Marvez: You have a young man who you will be playing with now for years to come who really flashed as a rookie, Noah Spence. Fill us in a little bit about this guy. What impressed you about him as a rookie and how much upside does he have?

Will Gholston: [Gasps] His upside is ridiculous. And the thing that impressed me the most is the way he prepared. When he first came into the meeting room, he didn’t necessarily take notes. But he sat next to me. So I am going to take credit now – he sat next to me and I showed him how to take notes and what he should do to be prepared. And once he got that and everything started clicking? Man! You saw him humming. And, man, was he humming. I am very excited to see what he can do next year.

Gholston then went into detail how taking notes in meetings may be the most overlooked trait for a player.

He said no matter how many times a position coach or coordinator goes over a defense, a player is likely to miss something so the better notes makes a guy a better player. Gholston added he keeps all notebooks from his NFL seasons and has them in a file cabinet at home for reference. He noted the biggest mistake a player can make is entering a meeting without a pen and notebook in hand.

And just who got him into the habit of taking tedious, detailed notes in meetings? His first position coach with the Bucs, Randy Melvin, and stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Let’s get it out of the way for him:

“The ice cream man is such a great note taker, nobody takes notes better than her. Taking notes and disappearing during the 3rd and 4th quarter are her specialty. No more soft serve!”

  5. unbelievable Says:

I’ll take the over since I haven’t seen tmax around yet today

Spence is gonna be a beast when he gets comfortable and settled in.

  7. BigHogHaynes Says:

Did he just reference our Great G McCoy#93, this Defense will be strong, top seven strong…so continue to build a wall … But not in Mexico dumb a$$.

  8. Frank Pillow Says:

Don’t forget that Spence was playing with one arm for half the season- the kid flashed speed, effort and toughness!

Them PFF people rank Swaggy #1 on they latest list. Oposing QBs beware. H3ll no to defense at any position in the first round. Free agency is for defense draft night is all about adding weaponry.

…and J.Smith too!….DE is now a solid, deep group on this team…a year ago, not so much

  12. unbelievable Says:

If J. Smith can stay healthy he is a 10+ sack guy easy. Hopefully we won’t seem him on any more punt coverage plays next year!

I’m really excited about Spawn though. Healthy shoulder and some added weight, this guy is going to be a nightmare for our opponents.

What’s Howard Jones’ status? I really liked him

What’s Howard Jones’ status? I really believed in him?

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m glad they kept Gholston. He works hard every play and gets better every year. I think this will be a 10 sack breakout season for Big Will.

Unbelievable when I watched Spawn give dallas’s Tyrin Smith fits (a guy I consider one of the best if not the best in the league at that position) I was this kid gone gone accomplish some incredible things in this league.

  17. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I’m happy Gholston stuck because with the addition of Swaggy we should be able to make some teams one dimensional. Doing that should allow everyone’s sack totals to increase a little.

  18. unbelievable Says:

that’s what Im saying NOS, he was the steal of the draft last year IMO.

  19. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Agree NOSBOS. And I was growing weary of getting pushed around and gashed by other team’s running games. Last year we fixed coverage on the quick slants….glory hallilujah…this year we fix the run defense.

I know we’re all excited about our offense but our defense is also getting better.

  20. Pickgrin Says:

Howard Jones was placed on IR in Nov with a knee injury. I don’t know how severe it was – but as of now, HoJo is a FA looking for a contract. No idea if the Bucs made him an offer for this year or not – or plan to. Perhaps they are waiting to see how well and how quickly his knee heals?

Excited to see what Spence and Jac Smith can do this year if both can stay healthy.

    Bighoghaynes,

I’ve noticed that all your posts end “build a wall, but not in Mexico…..Dumb a$$.”

If this about the USA and Mexico boarder issue, are you calling yourself a dumb a$$ since Mexico isn’t building a wall? (Makes sense) Implying Mexicans can’t build walls or shouldn’t be allowed to? Kinda racist isn’t it.

Or maybe it’s your contractor was supposed to build you a wall and He actually forgot where and started in Mexico. I’d understand the dumb a$$ label if that’s true.

The only other logical explanation is you have a bias against walls in Mexico. I just don’t see many bumper stickers saying “Mexicans for teepees” “Say No to imperialism and 45° angles”.
