ConteHate Is Real
March 17th, 2017The level of ConteHate is blowing Joe’s mind.
Joe isn’t sure what exactly safety Chris Conte did to Bucs fans, but a large majority wants him out of town like yesterday, and is enraged that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht brought him back. Many of these same fans would rather the Bucs play with only 10 defenders than see Conte on the field, they are so blinded by ConteHate.
Man, Conte must have loused up a lot of people’s bowl of corn flakes. You’d think he’s Sabby the Goat.
Yesterday on “Movin’ the Chains,” co-hosted Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, a Bucs fan had a list of grievances against Licht and one in particular was Conte.
“I’m not happy with what I see is going on so far and I don’t see how the draft is going to help us with all the holes we have at safety, at linebacker, at right tackle, running back, receiver,” said the Bucs fan “Dave.”
Kirwan tried to talk him off the ledge and said, “You have solved the receiver issue. … You solved the safety.”
Kiwan, of course, was referring to J.J. Wilcox being signed, but the caller would have none of it.
“Yeah, but Chris Conte?!“
The caller then launched into a tirade about Licht, all but saying Licht is ineffective at the draft.
“Everyone around here is telling me to wait until the draft. I mean, hold on. But, Jason Licht’s draft record is not pretty good, and this was when he was drafting in the top 10.”
Joe has no idea what hole this guy has had his head stuck in the past few years but let’s review: Here are some of the players Licht drafted since coming on board:
Mike Evans
America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston
Donovan Smith
Ali Marpet
Kwon Alexander
Vernon Hargreaves
Noah Spence
Jameis, Smith, Marpet and Alexander were the grand slam of 2015, arguably the best draft class since the Bucs drafted Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks. Anyone saying Licht stinks at the draft isn’t watching football or just likes to complain.
And Joe has no idea where this caller gets the notion the Bucs need a linebacker, unless he is an avowed Lavonte David or Alexander hater, or simply hasn’t watched either play.

There is only person that could have been. DallasBuc!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:08 am
I have no idea what he’s talking about…..his drafts have been good…its the FA’s that are hit or miss….licht has gotten a little better….
im most concerned with the oline situation…..center and RT are huge issues….cant wait for the draft…..GO BUCS!!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:11 am
Ndog
That’s funny. I literally had exactly the same thought!!! Now we know Dallas Buc’s first name….Dave!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:16 am
^LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:17 am
@ndog LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:17 am
Licht’s FA moves have been questionable, but you can’t knock the guy on his drafting.
Chris Conte has blown too many coverages that cost us big plays or TDs so the ConteHate is justifiable.
March 17th, 2017 at 9:18 am
DAVE!!!!!!! SMH!!!!!lol
March 17th, 2017 at 9:21 am
I don’t hate Conte, He played like hot garbage under Lovie, But so did everyone in that secondary.
And he got toasted a few times in the first half of last season, but he was playing pretty well before he got injured.
As for the linebacker needs, we don’t need another starter Joe, But we absolutely need to add some depth. Devonte Bond is an unknown, and Darryl Smith is inching closer and closer to retirement.
You absolutely must have depth at every position on the defense, on the Oline, and for the skill positions. Like Tight end 🙂
March 17th, 2017 at 9:21 am
Licht’s draft with Lovie in my opinion were driven by Lovie.
Ayers and Grimes were brilliant moves to aid Spence & Hargreaves.
SJax and Baker I’m all in.
In Licht I trust!!!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:23 am
^Licht’s free agency with Lovie in my opinion were driven by Lovie. ****my bad
March 17th, 2017 at 9:25 am
Chris Conte played great at the end of the season.
I love the guy!!
He is a warrior who gives his absolute best every game!
He is a hard-nosed safety.
I am totally satisfied with him.
Remember our diva safeties?? Tanard the Turd Jackson? And Sean Jones??
Those guys never played with heart!
At least Conte plays with HEART!!
Thats why the Bucs are on the rise!
Because we have guys who give their all!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:26 am
Joe and uncovered DallasBuc you made my weekend!!!!! Hilarious!!!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:27 am
I agree to a point but to drag Kwon and Lavonte in this is crazy…. however my stance is that his decision making and closing speed is to poor for the position!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:31 am
Conte played well against Chicago and KC. That was the beginning of the dominant defense. Conte’s light bulb went on after the defensive meeting that took place following the Atlanta’s game.
I’m glad he is back!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:31 am
Joe, I think actually LB is a position that could be addressed…not the biggest need, but the SLB could be upgraded. I know they’re intrigued By the Bond kid, but he’s kind of an unknown. So if there is a good one sitting around late I wouldn’t be mad if they snatched him (*ahem* Kwon) Not the biggest need by far, just a thought. I dont mind conte as much as everyone else… I don’t want him to have to start for us but he’s a good depth guy. Nobody was complaining when he single handedly won us the KC game lol.
March 17th, 2017 at 9:39 am
Conte has made some very big plays for the Bucs. It seems to me that a fair assessment is that perhaps he gambles too much. He seems like feast or famine but I don’t loathe him like many of the other fans.
Our safeties will not equal Seattle’s tandem…duh…but Seattle’s WR’s will not equal ours…again we can upgrade at positions all across the field and that’s going to be the case FOREVER. I can guarantee you that Bill Belicheat sees plenty of spots on his team that could be upgraded…it’s the NFL…parity and all of that…the Belicheats simply figure a way to cover their deficiencies while emphasizing their strengths. I think Koetter has this skill set as well.
Let’s rock this all the way to Minneapolis!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:40 am
Did the Joes only watch the Chiefs and Bears game last year? Conte was consistently out of place or getting burned if you take away those two games. Look at all 16 games not just 2!!!!
I seriously am doubting the Joes football IQ lately
March 17th, 2017 at 9:44 am
I have no problem with CC23 being a backup on this team, but if he is a starter than we have problems!!!! For every good game he gives you, he will have 2-3 bad games!!!!! And saying that he played well late last year is beyond generous!!!! He was covered up as the whole defense played better!!!! I do think that if an opportunity arises in the draft to get a good Safety in round 3 or later, they will not hesitate to upgrade that position!!!!
CC23 is just not good enough to start on this team anymore!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 9:46 am
Nah Chris is quality depth still with some upside left in the tank
March 17th, 2017 at 9:48 am
As for Licht’s drafts
Joe cites
Mike Evans
America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston
Donovan Smith
Ali Marpet
Kwon Alexander
Vernon Hargreaves
Noah Spence
Evans is a pro bowler and bonafide stud
Jameis is a inconsistent turnover prone qb
Smith, wasn’t he among the league leaders in penalties?
Marpet has played solid at times
Alexander is a tackling machine
And the jury is out on Vernon and Spence as neither has proved to be special, yet.
The Joes forget about ASJ, injury prone Sims, wasting picks for a kicker so The history isn’t awful like Dominik but it’s not great either
March 17th, 2017 at 9:52 am
The Conte “hate” is amusing to me. For the 1st what, 7-8 games this whole defense was terrible. Name ONE defensive player that did not make a mistake in that span, for that matter, all year. Good luck! VHIII- burned, Grimes- burned, Tandy- burned, McD- burned, Kwon missed tackles, LVD missed tackles/ghost, Smith missed tackles, Spence got lit up, GMC lit up, Ayers the “Beast” bested, McDonald pushed……I can go on though I think you get the point!
Conte’s a safety, so yeah, when he makes a mistake everyone sees it.
With better d-line play, the secondary will improve as it did in the latter part of the season.
Welcome back Chris! Go make some plays.
March 17th, 2017 at 9:57 am
@Tampa Tony, Licht has built a legit young nucleus of talent. Hargreaves will ball out this year with some serious confidence and some sophmore swag. He will be given more freedom to opporate within Schmitty’s schem and be the playmaker he was at UF and in the preseason.
Donovan Smith struggled early on last year, but came on strong through the finish. He adds serious power in the running game, he is a good open field blocker, and he will continue to become better in pass pro as he develops as an athlete.
Jameis will be raring to go, and come out firing on all cylinders heading into his 3rd season. Which is the season when Young signal callers typically make their biggest jump. If JL does his due diligence in the draft and provides him with more weapons, He will put on a show.
Ali Marpet will be an All-pro this season. Bank on it. And Noah will be back to peak health to start the season, a scary prospect for opposing OC’s. Considering how dominant he showed he could be in stretches of games last year. Watch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qbl_kUO3DUM
And he looked like that with a bum shoulder. Kid is a warrior. Will be special.
March 17th, 2017 at 10:09 am
Any chance we can get Baltimore to sign Smith to a one day retirement deal to get the free agent balance back to our favor to get a compensation draft pick…
March 17th, 2017 at 10:09 am
I feel bad for Chris Conte because the one stirring the pot is Joe. Using a pretty broad brush when you write things like “a large majority wants him out of town like yesterday”. My issue with safeties is that their mistakes are immediately obvious to every fan since they’re the last line of defense. A safety gambles … and screws up … and often it’s instant TD. That’s pretty visible. Conte gambles quite often, and sometimes it turns out great (aka, INTs) but other times he gets burned. I don’t think that ‘a large majority’ of Bucs fans want him off the team Joe. They just want him … and our other safeties … to serve as that true ‘safety net’ which all defenses need. In Chris’ case, Bucs wouldn’t have brought him back at his salary if they didn’t think he could contribute. I’m sure Mike Smith will give him every opportunity to compete for a starting job. I for one hope he does well. Of course, I hope ALL our safeties do well.
March 17th, 2017 at 10:23 am
I am going to write a small essay.
Why I’m a ConteHater,
HE SUCKS AT PLAYING FOOTBALL!!!
The End
March 17th, 2017 at 10:27 am
Joe I don’t understand how u don’t understand why some fans hate Conte.Maybe it’s because watching the replays of him getting burnt or not being where he should be
March 17th, 2017 at 10:30 am
Even Chris Conte thought he was garbage and was gone for good aftee the last time he was burnt and threw a tantrum as he left the field. I get it, he’s a good looking dude, which means a lot for some of you, as you do luke to comment on football players looks, especially qbs.
March 17th, 2017 at 10:35 am
Ndog Says
“There is only person that could have been. DallasBuc!”
LOL!
March 17th, 2017 at 10:37 am
I think Conte, just like the rest of the defense, played better in the second half of the season. Considering it was their first year under Mike Smith, that makes all the sense in the world.
March 17th, 2017 at 10:43 am
Conte is just a reserve safety, that’s all. Why would they draft Ryan Smith if they had long term confidence in him? They go get Wilcox, he is SS mainly, but the Bucs interchange their S quite a bit – think Tandy is the FS starter and Wilcox at SS -Conte is back up to both and bet a lot of money they draft another FS higher this time and get him in the rotation early as possible – Conte is there in case he needs to plug the rotation until the rookie is ready – or injury…IMO
The guy is playing pro ball so no need to hate on him, yet from section 219 his lack of field awareness is glaringly apparent far more often than not – good athlete, not so great instincts
March 17th, 2017 at 10:51 am
Conte is just too slow out of his breaks and often 2 steps out of position. But a lot of that can also be attributed to the poor cohesiveness of the defense during the 1st half of the season. He was involved in way too many plays that should have never even gotten to his level. I don’t hate him, but we certainly can upgrade his position.
March 17th, 2017 at 10:55 am
@SOE- Very eloquent sir! There are no uncertainties as to your feelings displayed in your work! Somewhere, Hemingway is smiling.
March 17th, 2017 at 11:00 am
The jury is still out on Licht…if he was as great as the Joe’s think he is, then the Glazers would have extended his contract…
right now…he is just average until the record of the team says something better.
He has missed on two second round picks and a third round pick as well as the jury being out on Ryan Smith last year.
His total denial of signing a second WR to help Evans and JW last year was a real blunder.
So hold off on the Licht Love… he has a long long way to go.
March 17th, 2017 at 11:11 am
Conte needs to start the season faster. For the 1st 8 or 9 games, I always saw him around the ball. But never on the ground with it, holding it, or making plays/ tackles within the area of it.
March 17th, 2017 at 11:20 am
I would rather we had signed McDougald & Wilcox but Conte will due for insurance which is how I think both Licht & Mike Smith view the signing. Is there any interest in Alabama S Eddie Jackson? Nice potential & ST value in Rd 3-4 if he’s recovered from leg injury.
March 17th, 2017 at 11:22 am
Agree with Ndog
March 17th, 2017 at 11:24 am
Licht can draft period. Conte sucks tho. We still need a free safety. Tandy has had 1 good month in his entire career. Not reliable enough but better than Conte.
March 17th, 2017 at 11:48 am
I like the kid from UConn, if no wr or rb left at 19
March 17th, 2017 at 12:14 pm
Joe, if you’re “not sure,” you’re not watching.
And don’t bring up his 2 good plays. That doesn’t erase 14 games of schlock.

Mountains out of mole hills…
This is a team sport… Everyone looks bad when your coaching sucks… Everyone looks better when your coaching is better…
Do you prefer evaluation be done when your bosses teach you wrong or when tjey teach you right…
The best evaluation of CC and the rest of these guys would be done once the effect of the REAL COACH SMITHSTOOD UP…
Thus evaluation should be done after the half way point last season….
Anyone that hates CC from that point is a Fan of Depression or a troll for lovie…
March 17th, 2017 at 12:59 pm
And its crazy how all you “regular JBF” posters are turning on the Joes…
As if he cares…
But I care and all you SO CALLED FANS… Well your the real reason RJS has been called The Den of Depression…
Soon it will be the Den of Inspiration and you people will be homeless…
When in the glory days you trolls showed up in my section you got pelted with ice and the occasional 12$ beer… This is fate once again…
I stopped going to games because you cry babies for Dungy and Chucky wouldnt shut up… Although we had decent talent… You idiots ruined it for everyone with your bill boards and heckles of our own heros…
You folks made it a Den of Depression NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND…
TIME FOR YALL TO STFU!!!!
March 17th, 2017 at 1:14 pm
Jab- Come see me in section 216 I fly down from NYC for majority of home games
March 17th, 2017 at 1:51 pm
Should I take a sign that says: WELCOME TAMPA TONY?
Im in 156 you dont have worrie about finding me… I will be the guy that you dont see coming if you come with the BS… LOL…
Just teasing…. Or am I???
Also, if you have been around for a while… I am the “Flag Man” from the glory days… And just before Big Nasty took over… Although my costume is much more original… Might jist resurrect that goast this year actually…
My theme was: The Red Siege… It almost stuck… Better than Tampa 2 IMHO… BUT Siege the Day is cool FOR NOW…
You will see me if I want to be seen… 216 will be a sure stop of mine…
March 17th, 2017 at 4:40 pm
Nobody HATES Conte. But many don’t want to see him starting at Safety either. There are reasons for that after watching him play here for 3 years. He’s a very solid back-up but we’ve needed to upgrade that position for awhile and Conte is not the answer for moving forward – which is exactly why the Bucs have offered him (and McDougald) 1 year deal(s) the last 2 years….
March 17th, 2017 at 10:23 pm
Sure did. Watched Conte get an interception in the end zone late in the Chiefs game that won the game.
Joe also was watching in person when Conte had a pick-six against the Bears.
If you missed those plays, you are a blind hater.
March 18th, 2017 at 1:46 am
Conte is an above average safety. Knock on him was never his skills- it was that he got hurt to often, from his hard play.
Most of the time fans think he got beat, he had left his area, once the ball was thrown- and was trying to get to McDougald’s man.
MacDougald had the habit of pulling up and watching, once he was beat.
Guess thats why the Intelligent Football minds brought back Conte- and not
“The Watcher”
March 18th, 2017 at 10:58 am
Conte got lucky twice last year, the rest of the time he blew!
