“Big Money Will Be Flowing In His Direction”

March 6th, 2017

Fresh report

The salary cap has increased big time. So has the desire to throw the football.

So has Dirk Koetter’s impatience with a lack of explosive plays and players.

A new report says a Bucs target in free agency, DeSean Jackson, will be paid a mountain of cash. It came late this morning from the super reliable Mike Florio, the creator, curator and guru of ProFootballTalk.com.

By all appearances, big money will be flowing in his direction. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Jackson is expected to agree to terms on Thursday, the first day of free agency.

The candidates include Washington, Tampa Bay, and multiple other teams. The interest is sufficiently strong to permit Jackson’s representatives to declare bidding open when the legal tampering period commences on Tuesday, if that’s what they choose to do. Then, it would be just a matter of playing the waiting game.

Florio is the ultimate NFL insider, and Joe can assure you Florio isn’t typing up “big money” unless Jackson will command a deal that will rock the market.

Would the Bucs dare cough up, say, $40 million guaranteed over three years for 30-year-old Jackson?

It sounds crazy, but the Bucs also opted to pay $10 million to 33-year-old Vincent Jackson last year coming off two knee ligament injuries. So maybe it’s not so crazy for a healthy DeSean Jackson.

Get him…..him and Campbell and Mangold!!!!!!!!!!

  3. T in Orlando Says:

$40 mil guaranteed over 3 years is crazy. $40 mil over 3 years with $20-$22 mil guaranteed, not so crazy.

  4. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    HELLLLLL NO

  5. LifeOfABucFan Says:

He!! yeah!! That’s all I say!!!

  6. Supersam Says:

    Nope. No way. Pass

  7. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    Puff Puff pass 🏈🏈🏈

  8. Steven Levy Says:

Way too expensive for an old, often hurt WR. Get Britt for half the price and draft a stud rook.

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

It’s not my money. if we have the cap space go for it.

  10. Jameisbucsfan Says:

Just get jaboo some damn weapons and stop worrying about the money. We have to spend it to get to the floor anyway. I feel better about explosive gambles vs conservative duds.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation” = Jackson’s Agent, who is trying to drive up the price.

$40m for 4 years would seem a better fit. With $20m guaranteed (2 years).

Keep in mind he missed 8 games in two years and barely broke 1k last year. And he only had 4 TDs the last 2 years. If Evans did that bad, you guys would call him a bust. Jackson has never even broken the 10 TD mark!

  12. Steve from Oregon Says:

Agreed..id take Stills and Patterson for less money

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

I don’t care about the money. Our cap guy Mike Greenberg has had his sh1t together going back to the Dominic era so if we sign him we will make it work.

I used to think that was Dominic’s strength – the way we structured contracts – but realized somewhat recently it was just this Greenberg guy whose still with us now

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Would dearly love to have Desean Jackson as a Buc, but not at $40 mil over 3 yrs. Dedicating $13-14 mil per yr to a #2 WR for 3 yrs is just too much, and will limit how many other FAs we can sign this yr & next. Bucs may have $68 mil or so available right now, but with all the contracts that has to cover, we can’t afford to give 20% of that to a #2 WR.

  15. Blake_bucsfan Says:

I don’t understand how you couldn’t want this guy. He led the league in yards per reception people. He is the perfect candidate to fit our need of a guy that can stretch the field. And by all accounts he is extremely football smart.

A big 3 year deal with most likely only 2 guaranteed is not going to put us into cap hell. It’s not your money people. Stop acting like it is.

And would you really not want this guy if it means Dontae Dye or Bernard Reedy or Freddy Martino wouldn’t see the field? Because that’s one of my dreams for next season. Not to see any scrubs off the bargain bin in a Bucs uniform during the Regular season.

  16. Stpetebucsfan Says:

The money flowing into the NFL is now astronomical. I do not mind the players getting their share. I have no more love for billionaire owners than I do for millionaire players and so good for the players cashing in.

My problem is with the way the money is distributed. The Players Union is not a union at all but just a guild of mercenaries trying to see how much they can get INDIVIDUALLY.

Now we have really lopsided salaries on teams that literally make no sense, other than the CBA gives the owners some protection through the rookie contracts.

I do not have an answer but I do have ideas. First..again I’m for the players getting their share as the % of the pie they have negotiated. But it should be distributed a lot more fairly. So let’s toss out some ideas.

First…I’d like to see a significant % tied to the teams record. IE…the pitiful pittance…relative to the huge salaries…awarded for winning a Super Bowl should be increased dramatically. There should be SIGNIFICANT bonus pools for teams winning Conference and Division titles.

I do not like incentives based on Pro Bowls or All Pro because those are popularity contests as much as rewards for actual accomplishment.

I do believe seniority counts but right now it’s totally upside down in the NFL.

If we believe in free enterprise (there actually is no such thing) we can’t possibly believe that the Bucs would shell out 40 million for DJAX while ME13 is making far less. Which player is actually worth more? Is there even a question.

It’s not enough to simply say ME13 wiil get his in his next contract…what if he gets hurt…why should he be so clearly superior to sooo many players making FAR MORE than he does…for this year or any year?

  17. MadMax Says:

    @Lord

name of your band again please…..I remember listening to that song and fkin loved it. Didnt save it though….hook a fan up.

  18. Etzel Says:

This just sounds like a bad deal waiting to happen… Older receiver that relies on speed and has a questionable work ethic. I’d be okay if we weren’t overpaying but now that it sounds like that’s a given, I say we should bail.

  19. ZZBucs!!! Says:

I take Stills or Patterson for less, and resign Vince Jax…..Bring Calais Campbell and Mangold….Also get another QB ( nobody is paying attention to this) ……. Re sign one of the two safety’s. Draft a solid RB, and bring depth were is needed……..Playoffs here we come!!!!

  20. DB55 Says:

Why not buy the “great value” brand and sign Robert Woods from Buff?

  21. Miko Says:

    stone hands and fragile…NO WAY!!!!

  22. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

No to a bidding war sign stills

  23. Q Says:

You guys obviously doubt desean jacksons skill and speed….this is free agency supply and demand….and jackson will be in high demand as the best free agent wide out in the NFL…you want top quality play at that position you pay for it….go get him…but one thing is for sure …jameis needs to work on his deep ball

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    IMO

    Trade for/Sign
    • Mike Wallace -$8M
    • Marquise Goodwin or Cordarrelle Patterson -$5

    Draft
    • Evan Engram
    • Zay Jones

    Projection
    • FL Mike Evans | Russell Shepard
    • SE Mike Wallace | Zay Jones
    • SL Marquise Goodwin | Adam Humphries
    • TE Cameron Brate | Evan Engram
    • TE Luke Stocker | Alan Cross

  25. Eric Says:

If he would come in and work hard, and quit doing idiotic things during games, it could work.

But 40 million is a lot when its a could.

Get a wide out in the draft, where he can play with Jameis, Evans, and Brate for years.

    Go defense in FA.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Stpetebucsfan Says
“The money flowing into the NFL is now astronomical.”

You are right, and just like the ‘marketplace’ everywhere else, that bubble will burst at some point.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Blake_bucsfan Says
“I don’t understand how you couldn’t want this guy. He led the league in yards per reception people.”

Which isn’t all that impressive when you look at his other stats and compare his numbers to Mike Evans as a measuring stick.

Evans gets 12 Touchdowns in a good season.

Jackson gets 4-6. His total yards per season are not impressive either.

Add the fact that he is high maintenance and there you go. Not worth paying him what we really want to pay Evans.

  28. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@Buccaneer Bonzai You seriously underestimate the effect Desean Jackson has on opposing defenses. It’s not strictly about his own production. The influence he has over defenses due to his speed is powerful.

You have to keep a safety over the top, or play off coverage against him, or he is gonna burn you. Say, you line up Djax on the left side of the field, with Mikey lined up right next to him, defenses will be faced with a tough decision on who to try and take away.

DJax’s speed will help out every other pass catcher on our team.

    Too Many Humans

    Thanks man!

  30. Name Requred Says:

He’s exactly the receiver you want. Ignore the money thing. He checks off all the boxes.

  31. Lord Cornelius Says:

    LUV

I’m really liking Zay Jones. He’s easily in my top 4 group with Davis/Williams/Ross now. Dude had amazing production / great tape / great hands / polished route running / and just tested well athletically in pretty much all drills.

He just seems like a surefire immediately #2 outside WR with potential to be a #1 if a team needed him to be. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him go round 1 now.

  32. mhall085 Says:

    “Sources close to the situation”?

“Washington, Tampa Bay, and MULTIPLE OTHER TEAMS”?

Florio is a glorified blog aggregator, and these phrases smack of AgentSpeak. Of course wide receivers will command a lot of money… a certain receiver in Pittsburgh already proved that. This reeks of “non-story.”

Jackson is too old, and Winston needs BIG TARGETS.

  33. Pepsi Says:

Why would we pay him that money when we could easily get Pryor for the same or less. Id rather have Pyror as hes 6’4″ 225, fast, 27 years old and just had 1000 yards for the Browns.

  34. Pick6 Says:

desean is not just another fast guy. every other speed WR in free agency has been really up and down in their career or has some significant hole in their game. DJax is not perfect on the field and he is not exactly Vincent Jackson off of it, but he is head and shoulders the best explosive play option for the bucs in free agency. DJax has been a central threat in many offensive attacks and did way more than run go routes for Andy Reid and Jay Gruden. DJax is a WR with speed. Ginn, Stills, Patterson and the other one trick ponies (2 if you count returns, but jackson brings that too if you want it) are Speed WRs. there’s an important difference

  35. Chyno Says:

Way too expensive for a player that is essentially just a deep threat guy. U take that away n he’s not much else. On top of that he’s not young anymore so that kind of guaranteed money for him is a hell no. I say 2-3 years around $10 mill a season with about half guaranteed would be a fair deal. Anything more than that I rather spend it somewhere else.

  36. SOEbuc Says:

HELLLL NO!! Trade up and get Williams or Davis. Get another good looking WR with speed in rounds 2-4. I would be very upset if they gave him $40 mil guaranteed.

  37. tmaxcon Says:

The bucs have never had a weapon like Desean Jackson who puts FEAR in Defensive Coordinators. Galloway was close but he’s no Jackson. Jackson gurantees 3 to 4 more TD’s for Evans and at least 2 to 3 more TD’s for brate…

The NFL has a minimum teams have to spend partially because of the bucs so stop worrying about money and salary cap that’s is ludicrous at this point. go get as many talented football players as you can.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Why all the desire to see Jackson come here, have any of you looked at his injury history? The guy is going to play maybe 10 games at the most, won’t be able to practice and we’re going to hear all season about how him and Jameis aren’t on the same page – because he’s not practicing. Sign a solid #2 and then go with an “explosive” player as the #3 guy. If Jackson wasn’t over 30 and didn’t have a long injury history then sure, throw big money at him, but he is over 30 and is constantly injured except for in a contract year – that should tell you everything you need to know about the guy.

  39. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Please sign T Pryor!!! Much more upside than DJ and most likely in the same ball park more or less with contract!!

  40. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs never guarantee more than 2 years these days. Jackson will likely command in the $10-$12M per range. We’ll see what happens. Better sharpen that pencil JL…

  41. DBS Says:

That is a question you don’t even need to ask. It is the Bucs. If it makes no sense yes the Bus will do it!! Just look at recent history!!

  42. DBS Says:

    ^ Bucs.

  43. SOEbuc Says:

When I first heard “what Jameis wants, Jameis gets.”I liked the sound of it, but now I’ve realized he’s a 22 year old coming into his third year of the NFL. That just sounds stupid to me now if it’s to be a serious, big money contract. Not to say he shouldn’t have an opinion.

  44. SOEbuc Says:

Kenny Stills draft a WR rounds 1-3.

  45. ARGH_M8E Says:

Imagine grabbing Dalvin Cook @19, then Zay Jones in the 2nd!!! I’d freak out, but you know what… it COULD happen. This draft is shaping up reeeeal nice for us if you’ve been paying attention. I had DC going early but now see a possible slide post combine, that we “playing with Winston” comment gives me goosebumps. Zay jones on the other hand has been killing me, my sleeper pre-senior bowl. He continues to impress. Might be a late day 1 guy now. Sign Djax or Tpryor, or Stills. I’m big on Campbell or Poe for D and It’s game on, the draft BPA rounds 3-7. Safety and DE a must… Safety Josh Jones is someone to look at mid rounds.

Kill FA, Murder the Draft and… “it’s on like Licht switches and drunk b!tches”

  46. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Sign Calais and Tony Jefferson then double dip at WR within the first 3 rounds of the draft. Voila – playoffs.

WR depth is terrific in the draft. No need to spend 13 million a year on a guy about to exit his prime who relies on speed. Bad teams do that.

  47. ARGH_M8E Says:

    https://youtu.be/tg5Ic2haNLw

    That’s a piece we’re missing^

  48. FireJoe Says:

Stills asking price is already in the 12 millions and is t remotely worth it. We have vjack 10 mil to do absolutely nothing. Is give DJack 12 mil for his 1000 yards and multiple TD season

  49. Burglife Says:

Too old for a speed guy, if we want a vet get Brandon Marshall and get some you don’t speed..
