Sweezy Makes A Deposit

March 15th, 2017

“Jason, why is this guy trying to push a West Palm condo on me? I already have one.”

J.R. Sweezy took it to the bank Monday.

And that says something about the confidence the brain trust of the Bucs has in him.

As we all well know by now, last year’s big-moneyed free agent pick up, Sweezy, has yet to wear a jock strap for the Bucs, even in a practice. Soon after he signed, the former Seahawks guard blew out his back and required surgery.

Joe has long stated the Bucs’ actions in free agency at offensive line will speak volumes as to their confidence level in Sweezy, the sergeant of the floppy hat patrol.

Frankly, money speaks louder than words and Jenna Laine of ESPN has the details.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard J.R. Sweezy will receive $5 million guaranteed for 2017. $2.5 million of his base salary became fully-guaranteed on the fifth day of the league year (Monday) and a $2.5 million roster bonus also paid yesterday, though that was already guaranteed the last calendar year. His cap number for this upcoming season is $5 million. Sweezy missed all of last season due to a back injury and has been medically cleared to participate in the offseason program.

That’s a lot of bread for a hope and a prayer.

The Bucs definitely believe Sweezy can answer the bell come September. But the history of offensive linemen who required back surgery, missed an entire year and then bounced back to be an effective starter isn’t reassuring.

Djax will be downfield in 2 seconds flat, no need for good offensive linemen anymore.

  2. Guzzie Says:

Sweezy is this years IR Allstar, Louis Murphy was our IR “bridge player” lol

  3. Miko Says:

whew! … the title suggested another ASJ incident coming…thank god it wasn’t 🙂

  4. tdtb2015 Says:

    Yeap, good old history!

Thank God history sometimes changes. Otherwise, we would still be hearing about getting Johnny Football…. for our backup qb.

But I must admit, I am grateful for Lovie not changing his philosophy. It gave him the opportunity to draft Jameis for us.

    In Licht I Trust!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  5. Guzzie Says:

Hope Licht realizes 31 year old 170 pound receivers can easily break, should’ve double dipped on quality WR depth, Djax goes down we are right back where we started, when Dotson goes down again, next man up is udfa Webster, 5th round guard Benenoch, or starting guard Pamphile, and cant wait to see how our stable of RBs 5’6 Quizz, Glass Sims, udfa Barber, Druggie Martin, and unproven rookie works out! Seeing other teams sign quality cheap depth (Burkhead/Lacy) or 1 year prove it/high potential type deals (Pryor) really concerns me

  6. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Spence had a so called back incedent from the weight room and didn’t miss a beat when he came back. My spidey senses tells me we can expect the same from Sweez. Really looking forward to facing the rams again. DB he totally man handles your boy Donald.

  7. Joeypoppems Says:

“Djax goes down we are right back where we started”

I think Licht is aware of that. People on here might not want to accept it but John Ross is a real possibility at #19 if he is still available.

  8. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Guz we have a bona fide star WR1 why you folks seem to be stuck on Jackpot age and size is beyond me. He was brought here for a specific role. To me that role Intel’s making life for ME easier not come in a be a 12 target a game football player bro.

  9. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And “if someone gose down” can be said for every starter in the NFL. Be it a 30 year old vet or a 22 year young rookie. Same trickle down issues would occur regardless.

  10. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Its brain tissue up there man.. Use it.

  11. JAB83 Says:

MIKO…. Thats some funny Sh!!. LMAO

  12. Dan Solaz Says:

Sweezy is gonna be a beast… Money well spent. He adds nastiness to the line.. We need to re sign Hawley asap I like the idea of Smith, Sweezy, Hawley, Marpet, Dotson, with Pamphile, Smith as depth. Obviously Bucs feel same way since we havent gone after any of the formidable free agents who were available

  13. JJBucFan Says:

Sorry Joey, I disagree. For Ross, injuries are a concern. Dude injured himself running the 40 and was supposed to have shoulder surgery yesterday. Ross also had 5 catches for 28 yards and a fumble against a “real” defense. Pac 12 defenses are generally non-existent. I’m not saying he doesn’t have talent, we just cannot afford to miss at 19.

4.22 is no joke, though and if we drafted him I wouldn’t cry, LOL

  14. DallasBuc Says:

Who is our center? What are you doing Licht to improve this highly overrated oline? Please don’t tell me you’re banking on another 2014 FA bust EDS to step in with his ridiculously overcompensated backup aas to start this season.

  15. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Ok Joe, off topic, please forgive, but I am curious…

What is happening with VJax? I am not picking up any news of interest from other teams. He would absolutely kick butt in the slot!! Yeah, I know that would take plays away from Rudy, but VJax would not cost much, he would be a stud possession slot receiver and Hump could give us the depth we still need. What do you think?

  16. JAB83 Says:

    GUZ…

Tell me how any of the giys you mention as quality depth our any better than the guys we got…

Rhetorical because they aint Bucs and they are unproven… Cant say that about the ones we got…

Stop being a Fan of Depression or Troll

    DOPE….

  17. Dan Solaz Says:

Better off keeping Hawley with whats out there at center

  18. mike10 Says:

I’m not sure who they expect to play Center.

If they’re banking on Sweezy to play guard, do they then expect Market to slide over to center?

  19. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

…Its brain tissue up there man.. Use it.

Love good sarcasm. As long as its not directed at me, LMAO

  20. Not there yet Says:

Get outta that dudes pockets my lawd that’s not that much money in the world of athletes especially if you consider how v jack ripped off the team last two years

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Sweezy can be a road grading manbeast when he is well. Go look at film of Marshawn Lynch, and guess who is opening yards wide holes for him ?
The big question is, will Sweezy have the will to get back in shape again or not ?
Once these large fat boys get out of shape, it is not easy for them to get back into it.

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

LEts seee..Spring trng/no pads and a few hits in real trng camp, And Sweez is back in Rehab for 2017. I always enjoy/laugh when Joe does articles on my main man…Easy (Money) Sweezy. Our..Tony Romo. Getting 5mil a year with his money for nothin and his chicks for free. Spin’em Sweez..Spin’em!!!

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s these type of statements that make me crazy: “how v jack ripped off the team last two years.”

Really dude?! The guy’s the lone offensive weapon for like 3 years and productive for most of the time here, gets injured, and he’s ripping off the team?! Here’s a newsflash: IT AIN’T YOUR MONEY!
Yet, you make the statement to get out of Sweezy’s pocket. Tell me ONE thing that Sweezy has done for the Bucs. I’ll wait.
To use the trending comment by Nole, “Its brain tissue up there man.. Use it!”

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    D.SMITH…..SWEEZY…MANGOLD….MARPET….PAMPHILE….

    GET IT DONE LICHT….GO BUCS!!!!

  25. MarineBucsFan Says:

    @813buboi,

That’s an OLine right there bro!!

I am one that believe Sweezy will make a return to the field this year, and the money they just dished out to him tells me the Bucs do too.

Sign Mangold and our OLine will be set.

Then Draft Cook and in my Pastor Troy voice….WEEEE REAAAADYYY, WEEEE REAAAADYYY, WEEEE REAAAADYYY, FORRR YALLLLLLLL !!!!!

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

    We have some Ferraris.
You have to worry about the o line don’t you???

  27. DallasBuc Says:

IR Sneezy has actually made several deposits of note. Deposited 2 seasons of highly overcompensated Glazer cash, deposited his aas on the bench since day one and oh yeah, deposited a deuce on someone’s forehead. Licht needs a baby wipe or two!

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

    What’s up Leatherneck?!
I have to agree on Mangold, if healthy. We need some depth though. Maybe get some young’ens via draft.

  29. Canabuc Says:

One of our own to be released by the Ravens. Would be an upgrade at Center! Bring back Zuttah

  30. Cobraboy Says:

IMO, it was very wise to sit Sweezy for the year, allowing the back to fully heal. It’s rushing back too soon that causes problems.

I may be wrong, but I think Sweezy will be a beast. He’s still young and has a lot to prove.

  31. Joe Says:

What is happening with VJax? I am not picking up any news of interest from other teams.

Pretty sure you answered your own question.

  32. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

DallasBuc I got just one thing to say to you….😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  33. gilhealy Says:

@Guzzie- Jackpot just turned 30. You keep saying 31. C’mon man. He won’t be 31 till real late in the season. Quit whining. It’s weak. You sound like Dallas. That’s not where you want to be.

  34. MarineBucsFan Says:

What’s up Bucsfanman, agree on depth. Hearing Zuttah is available, that would be nice too.

  35. StPeteBucsfan Says:

I prefer Samuels over Ross….4.3 is not that much slower than 4.24 and he’s a man. Played a lot of running back as well as receiver…doesn’t come with a history of injuries and is perfect to succeed DJAX as our burner…except even more flexibility.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Let’s hope Sweezy didn’t do his best to look healthy just to get that paycheck. A serious back injury is a bad thing for oliners.

  37. KangDooley Says:

    Sweezy=Anti-Carimi

  38. BucTrooper Says:

    That just grinds my gears.

  39. Tampa Tony Says:

Licht is just holding on for dear life to prove he’s not awful in free agency

  40. JonBuc Says:

Talk about throwing good money after bad…Sweezey will need to look like the 2nd coming of Logan Mankins or Davin Joesph to justify such foolhardiness. Seems like a temporary face saving move…delaying the inevitable to me. Hope I’m wrong…

  41. Pickgrin Says:

Sweezy being available if he can get back to form opens up a # of options including Marpet to center or Pamphile to RT. This is not a good draft for OL and FA was not very good for linemen either so we likely have to make due at OL for this year… A healthy Sweezy helps us accomplish that.

  42. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Not holding my breath on ole’ I.R. Sneezy

  43. Dave Says:

    Zuttah was traded to 49’rs
    Hawley resigned by Bucs
