Verner Booted
February 23rd, 2017Alterraun Verner will not be overpaid by the Bucs for the third consecutive season.
The inevitable is happening today, per NFL Network, The man who replaced Darrelle Revis is a former Buccaneer.
A big-money signing in March 2014, Verner was benched by Lovie Smith and was benched quickly by defensive coordinator Mike Smith last season.
For some reason, Verner just wasn’t the cornerback he was as a Pro Bowler for the Tennessee Titans.
Verner and Johnthan Banks were key depth pieces entering the 2016 season, and now they’re gone.
Verner, 28, did have his moments last year, including a key interception of Russell Wilson, but no NFL team is going to keep a backup corner earning $6 million.
Joe wishes Verner well.

No-brainer

So what is our cap space now Joe?I have a very good hunch light will be crowned kind of this years FA. He seen how close we came to being January Bound and he will not stand by and allow that to happen this year and i guarantee we will have big signings in FA and draft wisely!

February 23rd, 2017 at 4:16 pm
Revis replacement is gone.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:17 pm
I hope this is the beginning of the end with overpaying trash players.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:23 pm
Folks this is a new era for the Bucs. Verner seems like a good guy and good luck to him, but he never played even remotely close to expectations.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:26 pm
I think a splash FA signing is coming maybe two… imo if they cut martin and smith then Licht is goin hog wild in free agency, he has a job too… get to the playoffs.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:28 pm
Should have been gone last year! I guess it’s OK now that THE GREAT MIKE SMITH SAYS SO! But continue to Build A Wall ….but not in Mexico….dumb asses!!!
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:39 pm
Come on Conte and Jude, you’re the next one up on the price is wrong.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:41 pm
I’ll be more relieved when Doug is gone.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:48 pm
Verner and Banks should have been cut…Yesteryear. Mediocrity at its best. I still see at least 6 more surgeries which need to be done by the Bucs.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:49 pm
941Buc,
Per Spotrac NFL cap tracker, Bucs estimated cap space is $73,538,655.00. Third in NFL behind Browns and 49ers.
February 23rd, 2017 at 4:49 pm
1 down 3 to go. Evan Smith, George Johnson, and Doug Martin next
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:05 pm
Let me guess….Lovie ruined Verner.
I wish him well but I’m glad he’s gone.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:14 pm
@etzel
You won’t be more relieved than.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:16 pm
It’s just dumb to cut Martin. You wanna cut Martin then cry about weapons for Winston? Come on people…
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:26 pm
db55… 2 yards a carry is not a weapon.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:27 pm
Perhaps there’s a lesson in why the Bucs signed Verner in the first place? He’d spent his 1st 4 yrs with the Titans as everyone knows, and had had a decent career to that point: Never missed a game in 4 yrs; had a total of 272 tackles (68/yr) and 11 INTs … with 5 INTs coming in his last yr … plus a total of 50 passes defenses … with 23 of those coming in his last yr. So when he hit free agency, Verner had just had a career year, and the Bucs … who had just released their own top CB … paid dearly for Verner’s services.
In the 3 yrs he’s been with the Bucs, Verner has a total of 4 INTs & 20 passes defensed … fewer than what he got in his last yr with TN. Several possibilities why he didn’t work out for us, but the name Lovie Smith keeps coming to mind in each of them (same with Banks?). Personally don’t think that Verner was the type of CB that Mike Smith covets by the way. I think the lessons for the Bucs are that (1) there’s a price to pay for changing coaches every 2 yrs; and (2) be cautious of over-paying for players who have a stellar year just prior to hitting FA … consistency counts. (Oh and Bucs, RE-SIGN WILL GHOLSTON … he may not put up 10 sacks a yr as a DE, but he’s consistent in what he does well).

We could have picked Eric Reid, Desmond Trufant, Xavier Rhodes, or Travis Fredrick. Instead today we cut our pick.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:37 pm
Alterraun – You are a good man and a class act. Good Luck at your next NFL location.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:44 pm
@DB55 half a season running at less than 3 yards a clip is not a weapon.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:52 pm
They did him a favor then and turned him loose before free agency.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:54 pm
DB55 – if it was Doug’s first issue I would be on board with keeping him but it’s not.

Then cut Simms too.
February 23rd, 2017 at 5:55 pm
USF
You lost me! Not first issue?
February 23rd, 2017 at 6:05 pm
And people wonder why some question signing big money free agents. OH. How much do we have to spend??? And exactly how many over the years have been signed and not just come here either to get injured again or relaxed, collected their money and left? Tampa Bay Bucs. Home of the Free Agent Get Rich Vacation.
February 23rd, 2017 at 6:28 pm
Guess we will be drafting a CB the 3rd or 4th.
February 23rd, 2017 at 6:35 pm
For the record I’m fine with letting Sims walk after this season. He can be easily replaced.
February 23rd, 2017 at 6:49 pm
DB – I’m referring to Doug’s injuries. The two combined is just too much. Personally, I would not have re-signed him in the first place. I wanted Lamar Miller last year. I too would be fine with cutting Sims; I don’t see it happening but if they did I would say it was a good move. I want more guys who can fill multiple roles.
February 23rd, 2017 at 6:52 pm
The Verner move makes sense, I am curious if this is a sign that the Bucs are going to make some big moves in FA. We had cap room already and he did provide some nice depth for us.
February 23rd, 2017 at 6:58 pm
@DBS… BLOW it out your a$s. Go find another team chump. You and the rest of you clowns that only come on here and bash someone on the team, coach and management on up. Wish JOE would ban you and your ilk..
February 23rd, 2017 at 7:09 pm
Best of luck to Verner.
February 23rd, 2017 at 7:27 pm
I say we bring in Sam Shields!
February 23rd, 2017 at 7:30 pm
This is the make it or break it year. We only have a few holes left that can be filled with free agency and draft. Ask Jason Licht what he thinks about the make it or break it year and he will grin with a sarcastic remark. Bucs will be legit again. Heiden even wants it for us.
February 23rd, 2017 at 7:30 pm
Gruden*
February 23rd, 2017 at 7:33 pm
Bring in micah hyde.
February 23rd, 2017 at 7:47 pm
Shields just got busted on a misdemeanor drug possession charge and he has had concussion issues.
February 23rd, 2017 at 8:27 pm
Martin should stay. You gotta let him have a chance to redeem himself. He knows ge is on a tight leash, let his team down and I truly believe he will have a phenomenal year. If not cut his ass but you.gotta give him a shot. I would still draft his replacement or get a rb in fa. Isseah vrowell would be a damn good addition
February 23rd, 2017 at 8:30 pm
This team needs to draft well. Everyone wonders how New England does so well consistently, they get the most out of theyre young players. They draft well and coach well, then sign guys here amd there but they dont build theyre t eam around fa. Then once a winning culture is established players want to come here to win not to vacation. Hopefully thats where we are headed
February 23rd, 2017 at 9:41 pm
Capece is kaput…Verner is vanquished.
February 23rd, 2017 at 10:16 pm
As much as I would love to be able to get Adoree Jackson in the 2nd, there is CB Damontae Kazee possibly 4th or 5th. Perfect slot.
February 23rd, 2017 at 10:19 pm
Great man sent me a bible with an autograph class act bless up Verner
February 23rd, 2017 at 11:11 pm
Absolute no brainer. Never came close to earning a contract initially reported as a “steal”.
February 23rd, 2017 at 11:21 pm
I really liked the signing when we brought in Verner. He just didn’t live up to his reputation. It’s one thing for the fans to think you aren’t doing well, but 2 coaching staffs thought he was back up material too. It sucks things didn’t work out better. Bucs really needed that stud CB after Lovie bungled the Revis deal. Oh well. I do hope Verner finds a home that fits him, he was a great teammate and good dude. He deserves a fresh start to turn his career around.
February 24th, 2017 at 6:54 am
Adoree’ Jackson maybe in rd 2???
