Has A Trade Window Opened?

February 17th, 2017

Payback?

Arguably the second-most asinine move in modern Bucs history — after Josh McCown and Michael Bennett — was made in March 2014.

That winter, the Tampa Bay braintrust, spearheaded by alleged defensive genius Lovie Smith, opted to cut a healthy Hall of Fame cornerback in his prime. That was Darrelle Revis, who moved on to an All-Pro season and a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots..

The Bucs thought spending Revis’ salary on Alterraun Verner and Michael “Ghost” Johnson was a better use of Team Glazer loot.

Brilliant!

Well, Revis was charged with four felonies yesterday after a bizarre altercation in Pittsburgh. The Jets, his current team, probably will be looking for an experienced and temporary-type cornerback.

It might be time for poetic justice — and a little closure to an old wound — with a trade of Verner and his too-big, non-guaranteed salary back to the Jets for a seventh-round pick.

And maybe when Jason Licht is on the phone, he can pry Brandon Marshall away to help America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

No, I’m sorry but this doesn’t heal anything. He we had him 1 year, lost out on that pick (which was used on Leonard Wilkerson if i’m not mistaken) AND he was much better the years after we cut him (up until last year)

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

Its so funny that Joe still does not get it!!!! the popstar gave up a first and a third, which turned into a 1st and a 4th because lovie cut him, and the player only had 2 good years with none in Tampa!!!!

The trade should have never happened!!! and thankfully was one of the many mistake the pop-star made that got him fired!!!!!!!!

  3. DontBucNH8 Says:

I would love to see Brandon Marshall here. He’s a good #2

  4. Evo Says:

7th round? Should be able to get more than that. He’s is still a good DB. if we only get a 7th I’d say our gm isn’t a very good negotiator

  5. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Revis was a borderline HOF’er
Depending on how everything plays with current legal issues; he can kiss that dream goodbye.

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

That Revis incident occurred in the south side neighborhood of Pittsburgh. This is home to the white upper class professionals. I think these guys were awed by seeing the star player. Pittsburgh loves their native born sports stars.

  7. LUVMYBUCS Says:

It was the worst trade in BUCS history.

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Hey Joe – was Terrell Owens EVER charged with a felony?

  9. Joeypoppems Says:

Id take a 7th round pick over Verner any day of the week. Better than just cutting him.

  10. Waterboy Says:

Joe you must have started your weekend early and having a liquid lunch. Nobody is going to trade for Verner especially at his current salary even if it isn’t guaranteed.

  11. Rojas Says:

Just read Tony Jefferson only wants 7 mill a year. He’s 25 years old. I’d bring him in and draft another safety.

  12. Espo Says:

Cutting ties with that rehab project and cutting our losses was not the mistake. Trading for him in the first place was.

  13. Jason Says:

Francisco man you are all over the place with that name. First you combined two players names together, Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson. Two it was Sheldon Richardson who was picked.

  14. Chris Says:

Shhh Luv, Ira will argue that being a better teammate is far better than not having felonys oon your arrest record. You know, Ray Lewis….murderer….or involved with a murder…great teammate, LT, many time crack abuser, undersge prostitue frequenting…..great teammate. You see , thats what’s imprtant when you bring your children to Canton….great temmate trumps stats and good morals.

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Chris

    lol

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    What’s up with REVIS? Wow.

  17. bucs_365 Says:

Silliest article ever. There is no trade window with regard to Alterraun Verner. That is all. Next…

  18. tmaxcon Says:

The hall of fame used to be for the greatest of the greatest. character, good teammate all that irrelevant BS should have no place in the voting process. It’s for the best of the best football players. Smiles, nice guy crap has no place entering into the equation. Unfortunately with journalism being extinct for a decade plus in america the hall relies on a bunch of holier than thou has beens that get together yearly to blow smoke up each other arses trying to justify their pathetic agendas and their failing industry. Hall of Fame has been rendered meaningless just like the pro bowl.

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

@tmax- What gets me is that T.O. who, other than being a clown, is being black-balled at the HOF. Jason Taylor gets in but not T.O.!!!! Give me a break!

  20. rayjay1122 Says:

7th round picks usually are just camp meat. Verner has started in this league and has been to a pro bowl. I would not take less than a 5th round pick for him.

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

@87- I heard that he knocked 2 guys out cold. TWO! That in itself is impressive! Oh, and it was 2 dudes, not girls!

  22. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Bucsfanman

Ray Lewis says they got of easy!!!!!!!

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

    @Realist- LMAO!!!!

  24. Buc1987 Says:

tmax…yep I’ll also add the game was played much harsher back in the day. All newer guys that get in, in the next 10 to 15 years should have an asterisk beside them. I say this in jest, cause I don’t mean literally. The rules have changed to a sissified version of the football we grew up on.

Now a flag flies it seems if a “defenseless receiver” is hit by more than one defender. I looked for it when I watched other games and more often than not it happens like that. They just look for shyte like that and more often than not, it determines the outcome of not the game but the pending drive. Game to be determined later, after the view got more into the game and the next drive.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

Bucsfanman…yep I was just reading that too. I guess he don’t play.

Oh Ray…Realist you had to go there…

  26. StPeteBucsfan Says:

great temmate trumps stats and good morals.

As the man said stats are for losers…especially when despite those “stats” you get DUMPED by THREE teams while in your prime. Again if it was golf TO would be a shoein..but Football is a TEAM sport the last I checked.

Nobody is being the morality police in keeping TO out…Sapp is in and deservedly so because while he may have been a rude buttthole to Buc fans he NEVER caused dissension in the locker room or threw teammates under the bus.

TO SHOULD have great stats…his entire career was about ONE thing…him.
Why would three teams dump an HOFer?

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Acquiring Revis was a huge mistake.

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

@StPete- We’ll have to agree to disagree on T.O. I will 100% concede that the guy was a pure knuckle-head and virtually poison. But if you think for one second that Philly’s trip to the SuperBowl didn’t have anything to do with his stats or the 5 years that SF went to the playoffs while he was there, or the 2 playoff appearances in Dallas then you are sadly mistaken.
2nd ALL TIME IN YARDS RECEIVING behind ONLY Jerry freakin’ Rice!
    8TH ALL TIME IN RECEPTIONS
3RD ALL TIME IN TD RECEPTIONS

    Hall of Fame stats!!!!!!

  29. BigMacAttack Says:

No use crying over spilled milk. Get over it and move on. The Bucs appear to be in good hands right now. Let’s find the next Revis or Marshall in the draft. And let’s get another Marpet from a small school. That dude is a beast.

  30. LakeLandBuc Says:

The Jets have always robbed us Deaf,Dumb and Blind. You can go back to 2000, when we trade the 13th and 27th for Meshawn Johnson. Then the Jets selected DE John Abraham and TE Anthony Becht.

  31. StPeteBucsfan Says:

    Bucfansman

Excellent points. You’re winning me over. Love posters who take the time to present some facts to back up their point. Well done!

  32. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

    @Joe
No bringing in cancer’s on this team and it doesn’t take a very hard look at Brandon Marshall to see that he’s in that category.

  33. Cash Says:

Verner is more valuable than a 7th round pick, and it’s a moot point anyway because no one would trade for a guy they know is getting cut soon.

  34. unbelievable Says:

LOL at the idea that getting a 7th rounder would in any way, shape, or form even come close to making up for the Revis deal… Nice one Joe 😉

  35. IK Says:

Brandon Marshall is a first rate talent and first rate head case. No thank you on him.
