Mentality Of A Winner

February 8th, 2017

Winning belief explained in new interview

When the stat geeks scoff at wins, Joe scoffs at them.

In the immortal words of Herm Edwards, you play to win the game.

One can take all the statistical debris of the Patriots and flush it down the toilet because you know why? They are the champions. It’s all about the Ws, the most important statistic of all. To Dirk Koetter and his famous truism, “The only thing people give a sh!t about are wins.”

That’s one reason the Bucs drafted America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Dude lost one game in college — one!

He wasn’t always pretty, he wasn’t always precise. But when his team needed him in the fourth quarter, he got the job done.

While Jameis may never be Tom Brady — who the hell will be this side of Joe Montana? — he sort of was Brady-like in college. So on Monday, hours after the Belicheats stunned the Dixie Chicks, Dull Patrick had Jameis on his show to learn the mentality of a quarterback who finds himself down in a championship game, like Jameis found himself against Auburn, only to see Jameis march Florida State on an 80-yard, national-championship-winning touchdown scoring drive.

“When you are down, good quarterbacks, they don’t ever think they are losing the game,” Jameis said. “You can’t. No good quarterback processes that, ‘Hey, we are about ready to lose the game.’ The only thing we are thinking is, ‘Hey, what can we do to keep scoring and scoring and move the ball and get first downs and ultimately come back?’”

That, friends, is your quarterback. Your Bucs quarterback. It’s all about moving the ball and first downs and more important, points. And, yes, wins.

The SB loss is clearly on Kyle Shanahan and the collapse of his offense. No Shanahan did not take the sack and then a holding penalty that backed the Falcons out of a game winning FG…

But think about what Shanahan called…NE kicks a FG in the 4th to make it 28-12 Falcons in the 4th!!! 3rd and one…The Falcons had run the ball well all game and what does Shanahan call…a risky deep pass play that Ryan gets sacked and fumbles…imagine if they simply gave the ball to Devonta…he probably gets the first and if not the Falcons punt and there is no game changing turnover!

The next time I get angry with Koetter for running the ball in that situation I’m going to remember the SB.

The Falcon D was totally gassed in that 4th Q because they had been on the field all night…in the first half because of the Falcons quick scores..in the 2nd because the Falcon offense self immolated. The best Defense in that situation is a great offense. We learned this the hard way ourselves in 2016. If we had weapons for Jameis we possess the ball in a couple of critical games and get 11 wins.

I’m tired of hearing talk about D and OL…damnit…get some freaking speed and weapons for #3!!! That should be the TOP priority this off season

Cough cough. Cough cough cough. Lol

Winners win period no matter the odds no matter the challenges. It’s a mentality. One that Sapp n Brooks had, no matter what happens we WILL win.

Unfortunately some of our “leaders” don’t even show up to games #cowboys.

  3. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Love Fameis 5:00a.m tweet this mourning “rise and grind”. Them chips on the way people Brady can’t hold ceptor forever.

  4. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Keep preaching Pete,Cook in the 1st Samuels in the 2nd. That’s enough electricity to power a small city.

  5. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Some think Jville may be a player for DC,I doubt that. Coughlin old school that organization is about to be built in the image of Tom Coughlin hard nose Defense and power running. His last chip was won with 6’3 260lbs Jacob toting the rock. Others feel the cats will be players for DC maybe but with Rivera stating the run game will be more of emphasis makes more since to me go with the power running of Fournette than DC. If you are going to give the rock to your back 20+ times are you giving it to a bruiser which fits they’re offensive style or a slasher??? After that it comes down to do GM change they’re traditional thinking and go RB??? Time will tell. But all the so called experts throw shade at RB early in the first so it should be interesting. My belief is we won’t have to move at all. DC will be there at 19.

  6. DB55 Says:

    Dalvin won’t get past Carolina.

  7. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Jerry Jones buck traditional wisdom and took Zek early when all the so called experts were saying DL for the cowboys. What did it ultimately get them. A nice reg season record and a first round dismissal because that defense was garbage. We’ll see about looonnngg gone come draft night.

  8. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Maybe he won’t. But when I look at the guy that’s been running the ball there (Stewart) Fournette makes a h3ll of a lot since. We’ll all watch the shake down draft night.

  9. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

DC not suited for a power running game. He’s not built for that.

  10. DB55 Says:

I hope you are right but Dalvin a top 10 pick.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

in fairness to both sides your next article should be “The Mentality of a Loser” – The Gerald McCoy story”… a story about the Leader of the Losing Culture for the Last Seven Years… You can’t have it both ways and agree that the losing culture exists yet slobber daily over the clear cut leader of the same losing culture.

  12. webster Says:

    Nole,

Many mock drafts had dallas taking elliot as well. That pick was in no way a surprise. Btw…cook will not be drafted by the bucs. Why? Because he wont be there and they are not trading up for him. Give it a rest. D@mn we get it, you want cook. Its getting old and tired

  13. Bucnasty!!! Says:

I scoff at all the capoligst who always wanna save glazer money we can’t pay 2 numbet 1 wrs we can’t pay 2 dts mannnnnn all that matters is the win whatever licht can do to provide us with talent to get us over the hump I’m all for worry about money when t matters. We’ve been sitting with x amount of cap dollars for years and what do we have to show for it? As a matter of fact ask the saints how that parade felt I’m sure they’d tell u it was worth the ring. Drop the Verners and Darryl smith’s of the world if we get tight n need the money. I’m ready to celebrate!!!!

  14. 813bucboi Says:

nole says, “DC not suited for a power running game. He’s not built for that.”….

we already have CS who doesn’t like running between the tackles…why would we add another?….in the first round at that…..

    #DRAFTDONTEFOREMAN…..GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Bucnasty!!!

“As a matter of fact ask the saints how that parade felt i’m sure they’d tell u it was worth the ring.”

They havent been back since. They built through FA for 1 Super Bowl title. The way Licht and Co. want to do it is by building through the draft to be contenders every year gor years to come.

  16. Bucnasty!!! Says:

So would u rather have a ring or what we’ve had for the past 15 year Jpey? No offense but you are what I’m talking about your trying to save glazer money as if that equals a championship I’d much rather have the ring plus besides that the saints had a aging roster ours is filled with young talent so we won’t essentially fall off the map like they did

  17. Joeypoppems Says:

Lol. First off lets try to keep the expectations for next season somewhat realistic. If anyone is actually expecting a SB appearance this season, calm down. Second we arent in the position we have been in in the past. Yes we have the young talent on the roster. They are gonna get paid to so how can that happen if we just go balls to the wall on a bunch of vets.

The NFL is a business, not fantasy football.

  18. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Webster can I get those lotto number dude??? And 814 I know you a gaytor in all but ask yourself did at anytime Dalvin remind you of CS when he was carving up your defense while in school???

  19. captjimbo Says:

Could we just stop with the Americas QB. What does that even mean?

  20. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Means he was born in America. I just why it bother you A-hole so much. I kinda have a theory but I’ll keep it to myself.

  21. captjimbo Says:

So every QB in the NFL is Americas QB then. Well it makes perfect sense now. As for your theory it has about as much credence as
DC making it to the 19th pick.

  22. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Joey

Sorry..love your posts but you’re not going to get me to calm down. I’m the freaking blog optimist..well next to that guy who Joe has bestowed with that moniker.

I’m not going to calm down at all. I’m thinking Licht is going to sign two FA’s who will have impact…a WR..Jackson…Garcon…Stills..a true NFL #2 WR. Then he gets either Poe or Campbell to beef up the DL.

Then he’s free to use the first three picks to grab two players…Dalvin and Samuels..he take his remaining four picks to supplement the DL..OL..Safety..CB’s…BPA. Mix in one or two UDFA’s for depth and sorry Joey…respect your opinion but I’m not going to calm down… I want to see the Bucs in Minnesota next year.

  23. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Could we just stop with the Americas QB. What does that even mean?

It means about the same as Jerry Jones and the boys calling the Cowgirls “America’s Team”. Talk is cheap. I’m America’s poster. Who really cares.

If the Joes want to have some fun I got no problem with it. In fact hate to say it but did you see the movie “Something About Mary”? Remember when she’d screw with Ben Stiller’s head and then laugh and say just effin with you…Joe is just effin with you guys and it seems to be working really well…LMAO except on NOSBOS…me and several others. We are happy to fun along with him.

  24. captjimbo Says:

Good points Stpbf. You hit the nail on the head with the Dallas reference. I hate the Americas team reference almost as much as I hate the Cowboys so that’s probably where my disdain comes from.

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    CaptJimbo

I hear you. I hate the Pats worst of all but the ‘Boy’s are a close second…I can see where that reference brings up bad thoughts. LOL

  26. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Stpete

I’m not saying anyone shouldn’t be excited for the upcoming season. And obviously I want to see the Bucs in the SB. I’m just saying to go into the season with “super bowl or bust” expectations is a high bar. Let’s just get to the playoffs first lol.

  27. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

America’s QB sound good to me. As far as DC at 19 gose ain’t my fault you a follower an recite the same thing you see others say when the data says different. Again we’ll see draft night.

  28. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Pete “Superbowl or Bust”sound good to me sir. Jbf posters expectations are soft like cottonelle toilet tisse.

  29. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I think Superbowl every year regardless of the outcome. I greatly hope everyone in that lookerroom dose as well. I gaurantee that young QB is. Clinton McDonald ended the season saying “2017 will be our year”. To me that sounds like he’s intending on doing more than just getting in that playoffs.

  30. DB55 Says:

Jbf posters expectations are soft like cottonelle toilet tisse.
    ———
    You ain’t never lie.

  31. captjimbo Says:

nosbos, I couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks, my data says DC has more value than a 19th pick. I truly believe someone grabs him before we pick. We have to many holes to fill to give up picks unless it’s a 5th or later which i doubt would help. Also you have my blessing to call JW Americas QB if thats what floats yer boat.

  32. Joeypoppems Says:

Players should have a Super Bowl or bust attitude. I’m not a player so I try to set realistic expectations. Last year I just wanted to see a not losing season. This year I want to see playoffs.

  33. webster Says:

    @ nole

Since you are so sure, lets make a bet that the bucs will/wont draft dalvin cook. Put your money where your mouth is.

    @ bignasty

No team pays two #1 receivers. Why? Because you have to fill out an entire squad. Find one team in the league paying two wr 14 mil plus. You cant because its idiotic to do so.

  34. webster Says:

    I meant @ bucnasty

  35. captjimbo Says:

Strive for perfection but accept excellence and nothing less. Playoffs this year is the direction we want to move. A playoff win and we will be ahead of schedule.

  36. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

(407)600-1796 call me. If I don’t answer leave a message I’m working right now.

  37. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

So many holes so many holes. Y’all will be saying that dumb s@$! after we win a Superbowl.

  38. captjimbo Says:

Nope you’re right nosbos, we should give all 7 picks to Cleveland for their first so we don’t miss out on Cook. Who needs a stinking OL or D when you have Dalvin.

  39. Duke Says:

    @Webster,

You say it’s idiotic, trading up for a kicker that’s idiotic.
The only way to top that is the bucs draft @1 the ncaa’ s all time greatest long snapper.

  40. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

He says a playoff win would be ahead of schedule”. If that ain’t some dips@$! Ion know what is. How many playoff teams did we beat this season guy??? Riddle me that.

  41. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Easy fella I’ve shown what the Bills gave to move up to get Watkins a number of times. One 1st rounder the following season. I ain even on the move up train anymore. We gone stand pat and draft him at 19.

  42. Joeypoppems Says:

I gotta say, the bets you guys are making is enough for me to keep a close eye on Cook on draft day lol

  43. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Jbf posters expectations are soft like cottonelle toilet tisse.

NOSBOS….no matter whether folks agree with you or not they got to give it up for your use of language….that’s a great simile…still smiling from that one.

Here’s my plan NOSBOS…see if you can tweak it…Carolina scares me most in terms of the Dalvin stakes. If we are willing to convert our first three pics into two higher picks that could enable Licht to move up some in the first and perhaps also swap second rounders in exchange for our third rounder. We then take Dalvin and Samuels and watch the two burners scare the beejeesus out of NFL DC’s. Who ya gonna call? What LB can cover either Dalvin or Samuels…with DK’s creativity and #3’s continued growth there would have to be mismatches all over the field…and remember ME13 is second to no one except JJ…and Brate led the league in TE TD’s. These guys are smart and now experienced and when Dalvin and Samuels create all that space ME and Brate also flourish.

I get the desire for the overwhelming lines but that ain’t happenin this year…we can only supplement what we have and hope that Sweezy is healthy and Benenoch is the next Pamphile and can handle RT.

If we sign either Poe or Campbell I’m not really that concerned about our DL…Noah is set to blow up big time…GMC will get his usual 8 sacks…then it’s up to Ayers or Jack Smith or perhaps even LVD to come through.

And as far as pressure and I the only one who sees Ronde potential in VHG…the kid is a fearless tackler and will stick his nose in there..let him blitz occasionally.

  44. orlbucfan Says:

How do you define winning? Very intelligent cheating? Tell Bill Beli-CHEAT to get his spyware off our team. How boring.

Like really?? Why don’t you go skrew off. Definitely a troll.

  46. captjimbo Says:

Riddle me this nosbos, when was the last time we won a playoff game? And you don’t think winning a playoff game is improvement? I can tell you’re a passionate Noles and Buc fan as am I. I just try not to live in a fantasy world. I get some people want to live in lala land but I prefer reality. Is it possible DC is there at 19? Possible maybe but it ain’t likely to happen. Is it possible the Bucs win a SB next year? Possible maybe but it ain’t likely to happen. Welcome to reality! One last thing. Is it possible that I hit the lottery this week? Possible maybe but it ain’t likely to happen. And it’s only possible if I play so I will be buying tickets but I won’t be buying a yacht untill the numbers come in.

  47. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Stpete @Nosbos

Honestly I think there is a better chance Cook goes at #4 to the Jags than at #8 to Carolina if we are talking about just the top 10 picks.

I agree with you Nosbos, Fournette seems like a better fit in Carolina than Cook. Cleveland at #12 is where Cook gets interesting. He can very well be the BPA for them and Cleveland just needs talent anywhere they can get it lol.

As far as trading up goes, I think you both know I’m against it in the first round lol. But obviously depending on how far up you would want to move it will most likely cost more than 2 picks, especially in the 1st round. And especially if you want to get ahead of Carolina. To go from #19 to #7 I would think our 2018 1st round pick would have to be included along with obviously the #19 pick and maybe our 2nd round pick this year.

Trading back into the 2nd round is also tricky. Last year it cost our 3rd and 4th round picks to get to like the 29th pick of round 2. Idk where exactly Samuel is projected go in round 2. If I had to guess I would say the top 20 picks. A 3rd and 4th rounder might not be enough to get into top 20 when a team would have to trade out of the 2nd round completely. So you would either have to throw in a 5th round pick (which doesnt hold much value so that still might not help) or you dip into the 2018 draft picks again and throw, idk, our 2018 3rd round pick in there.

If this is the scenario, and honestly I have no idea if these trades are realistic, you will be giving up 6 picks (4 this year and 2 next year) for 2 players. I know how good both Cook and Samuel are. Would you still be willing to give all this up for 2 players?

PS: I’m not trying to talk you out of the idea. I’m just curious how much you value both of them.

  48. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I give ratz about the Kat time has absolutely nothing to do with this current team. Pete I’m not about carolina because they operate in a power base run scheme. Fournette makes more since to me considering his size and stature. DC isn’t coming from a power base in school Leonard is tho. DC not built for a power run scheme in my opinion.. Pete we on it bro Cook in the first Samuels in the second.

  49. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Pete I’m at work and on the fly. Ima read yours a little more thoroughly when I get a chance sir. Jimbo not mention we beat last years Superbowl rep twice.

  50. webster Says:

    @ noles

We are both buc fans. Lets keep the bet simple. If you are right, i buy u a DC jersey. If im right, u buy me the bucs jersey of my choice. What do you say?

  51. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

That’s a bet webster. Pete siiirr just reading that gives me chills. Give Fameis all that weaponry and we’ll hoist the Lombardi next season for sure. Pop you could be right about Cleve. If they go Myles first overall tho I think Hue would be hard press to take DC over the Clemson QB. Just my opinion bro.

  52. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Jimbo the point I’m trying to convey is we beat KC,Seattle,Atl, came up short against Oakland in OT and beat last season’s NFC champs twice. Those wins in my opinion weren’t by luck bro. Those wins give me greater expectation going into next season but that’s me tho. Give me Calais,Still or DJ. Allow what Pete diagrammed to happen in the draft. I’m sorry bro to me that would make us ready for whom ever.

  53. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Nosbos

Yea they could be more interested in a QB at #12. I just can’t wait for Free Agency to start so all of the teams situations become a little bit more clear lol.

  54. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

You don’t beat teams that later end up in playoffs by chance. You beating them puts you on par with them.

  55. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I feel you on that one Pop..

  56. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Damn so Nosbos gonna be in the hole for at least 150 when Dalvin gets drafted before Us.

I’ll take O.J and Curtis Samuel in rounds 1 & 2 thank you very much.

Mixon/Perine in round 3 would be some scrumptious icing on that cake.

  57. webster Says:

The bet is settled!!! Noles its a done deal. Im a man of my word. Thats all i got…my balls and my word. I hope u live by the same.

  58. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I second that webster. Blake I hope claim is the same.

  59. NFLNut Says:

I am ALL FOR DALVIN COOK at #11 but I really doubt he’s available by then.

Jags, Eagles, Browns, Panthers and Colts all need a RB desperately so I would assume two of the five will snap up Fournette and Cook before the Bucs pick.

The only real hope is that the Jags don’t value either RB high enough to draft them at #4, the Browns go QB or CB … or even WR (if they loose Pryor in FA which is unlikely), the Eagles go CB or WR and either the Panthers or Colts go Tackle or Defense ….

HOWEVER, I fully expect the Browns to re-sign Pryor, the Eagles to sign a starting WR in FA and BOTH the Panthers and Colts to sign an offensive lineman and a quality defender in FA … on the other hand I do NOT see a single quality RB in FA this year other than Adrian Peterson who will most likely either re-sign with the Vikings or go sign with the Giants or Raiders … or maybe the Bucs (though I doubt it).

The above said, I think there’s probably only a 10-20% chance that Fournette or Cook fall to #19.

However with MacCaffery, Foreman, Kamara, Mixon and Perine I have no doubt the Bucs can draft a starting quality RB in this draft and that is god news!

The above said, I’d like to hear WHO Pete and NOSBOS really want at #19 if Cook/Fournette are off the board at #19?

  60. NFLNut Says:

    #11 … typo … #19
