Martin, Mixon & The Marcus Tribe

February 11th, 2017

Gil’s “Echoes” column will run every Saturday on JoeBucsFan.com.

Joe is pleased to introduce Gil Arcia as a brand new Saturday columnist for JoeBucsFan.com. Fun stuff ahead in 2017! Joe has known Gil for years, and Gil has plenty of strong opinions worthy of reading. Bottom line: he’s interesting —- Joe loves interesting — and Gil has a few key sources, too. Gill will write about whatever’s on his mind. Like JoeBucsFan.com columnist and Hall of Fame voter Ira Kaufman, Gil’s takes are his own and he has no leash from Joe.

We are past the one-month mark since the Bucs’ season ended and NFL Draft talk has dominated social media and message boards. It’s almost like free agency doesn’t exist in the eyes of most.

Crazy.

But a topic that continues to be thrown out there is what to do with Doug Martin. Many suggest the team should bring him back. Why?

Look at it realistically: His injuries are a problem and as a result of his injuries he resorted to banned substances, hence, why it’s a problem. Follow?

Why would a team bring back a player that has only thought about himself and not what the team ramifications of his actions could have been?

Sure, Martin’s contract won’t be the same. But allow for his return and if (when?) the same situation comes up, we’d be talking about this once again. I haven’t even gotten to his stats, which may have been impacted by his coping mechanism. A weak 2.9 yards per carry behind a line that Jacquizz Rodgers averaged 4.3 yards per carry in 2016. Those are the stats that matter.

So what should they do? Should they look to Adrian Peterson? The draft?

Whatever it is, Rodgers deserves to return and Martin should focus on himself outside of football and outside of the team.

A Deep(er) Look

There was a recent breakdown by Tampa Bay’s Twitter statistician (is that a thing?), Thomas Bassinger of the Tampa Bay Times comparing, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, to Titans’ quarterback Marcus Mariota.

It was a firestorm from the Marcus Tribe after Bassinger claimed “Mariota won 2016,” based on his statistical analysis.

It’s fair, based on the stats within the breakdown. But for every tenth-of-a-point that separated the two, there was one crucial stat left out: drops by wide receivers. Per Sporting Charts, the Titans were the second best team in the league in catching passes while the Bucs sat four spots worse.

So, if three or four more passes were caught by Buccaneers wide receivers, those Mariota vs. Winston stats might have swung in favor of the pewter captain.

The good news is that after being the team with the sixth-most dropped passes in 2015, the Bucs did improve 20 spots in just one season. I think that qualifies as the arrow pointing up.

Bucs, Mixon Won’t Mix

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted Friday morning that teams view Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon as undraftable. Boy, that kills the hearts of many fans, several who flooded my mentions still trying to tie Mixon to the Bucs in some way.

This situation with Mixon goes beyond football. There is no denying his talents, however, you can’t deny the potential backlash.

Think of all these things against him: a video showing him punching the woman, and he is on record saying he does not regret what he did, and police released video detailing the victim’s side. Factor in that Mixon was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, and that alone limits the likelihood of every team talking to Mixon face to face and getting a better feel for him.

One-half of the Joes brought up a great point and that is what corporate sponsors might think of a team drafting him. Do you remember what happened to Ray Rice?

There is no way the Glazers allow Jason Licht & Co. to take on such a gamble.

Welcome… since there were loud whispers in the community that doug was “partying” isnt that another indictment of clueless licht signing martin as opposed to going out last year and drafting an RB like the titans did or through FA grabbing a legit RB…

  2. USFBUC Says:

Agree with you on Doug. I feel like he should have never been given the second contract to begin with but I also know there weren’t a ton of options at RB that year.

On Mixon, I think that the Bucs will take a look at him and they will spend some time investigating his background. I think they could bring him on and handle the situation much like they did with Jameis. Basically just put out positive stories about how they spent a bunch of time and they feel that drafting Mixon is okay and his past is behind him. Personally from watching the whole unedited video I feel like Mixon handled the situation wrong but it was an incident that will not repeat itself.

  3. Joeypoppems Says:

The point about how sponsors would react to Mixon is a great point. I never thought about that.

  4. Sunny Says:

Martin was coming off a great year , where he was second in the league. In hindsight, we can say Jason did wrong , but can you imagine if we didn’t sign him (remember no one knew about his partying than) everyone would be asking for his head

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Mixon would make a great pro-boxer. Oh wait, they hit back.

Sorry Gil but many round these parts want to forgive and forget.

Some even said it was justified. No matter her story, oh and that video.

I still in the corner of “undraftable”.

  6. USFBUC Says:

@ Sunny His partying habits have been talked about and some have suggested that everyone knew Martin enjoyed some partying. Even if his partying wasn’t known about he was still only good half the time.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

Sunny…not everyone. I was begging for the franchise tag.

Yep I was one of those fans who typed it repeatedly.

  8. USFBUC Says:

87 have you watched the video in its full length?

Mixon was waved over to the table and then turned to leave. He shouldn’t have hit her but he was going to walk away from the situation. Plenty of people who have done worse have been given a second and third chance.

What are your thoughts on Cook?

  9. Guzzie Says:

Comparing Ray Rice a 27 year old grown man to Mixon a 17 year old kid at the time, is unfortunate for the kid, but that’s the reality we live in, I personally want him to go undrafted, but not maliciously, he goes undrafted to set an example to entitled high school and college athletes, that actions speak louder than talent, don’t get me wrong I want Mixon on the Bucs, but this is an opportunity for the entire league to demonstrate that domestic violence will not be tolerated

  10. ClodHopper Says:

Mixon is undraftable. Even eliminating the moral factor he’s undraftable. A dude that does that with no remorse does that again and again. That means suspensions. That means Greg Hardy type bullspit.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

    USF…being a Nole. I love the kid.

There’s just something about him that scares me though and I can’t put my finger on it.

I’m also one of those fans that doesn’t like drafting RB in the 1st. Especially in this deep RB draft.

So if he falls to 19 for some reason then I guess I’m okay with taking Cook. I certainly won’t be upset.

  12. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Wow, I don’t know how it could get done. But if we can, get him. Our PR did a great job with Jameis. For crying out loud. We tried to sign Hardy… He’s a grown man! Not a young kid. I trust Licht to atleast talk to him. If he goes undrafted then better for us. I mean snatch him up the moment the last pick is made in the draft. 1st round talent on a UDFA contract… I’ll be cool with that

  13. USFBUC Says:

@ 87 if you are okay with Cook then you should love Mixon. Cook was also involved with a similar incident and then threw cruelty towards puppies on top of it. Beyond that Cook punched a woman in the face multiple times whereas Mixon only punched a woman once.

  14. Mikadeemas Says:

    Welcome Gil!!

  15. Buc1987 Says:

USF….yet I don’t see anyone raising their eyebrows over Cook’s past.

  16. martinii Says:

In regards to Mixon, I can only remember Legarett Blount clobbering another player during a college game and now 9 years later the UDFA is hoisting his second or third (Memory?) Super Bowl Trophy into the air. Now Mixon is undraftable but who can say what could happen when he grows-up. As far as Martin goes, I am a Fan, but I like many believe he is a huge question mark. I say move on, but I may read a post next week that changes my mind. Thats what I love about the offseason. If I had all the answers I could come out of retirement and make millions$$$.

  17. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Aren’t monopolies illegal, Joes? JBF gathering talent. I love it!!

  18. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

@USFBUC… Don’t hurt em like that!!! I didn’t know that about Cook. Damn it where’s the big homie Nos Bos? If that’s true, THAT to me seems like a… Like a young man who needs MORE help than Mixon. Yet how is he rated to go in the 1st he these things you say are true… I’m confused now

  19. USFBUC Says:

Damn I just did some more reading on Cook and this kid is in trouble ever other year or so with the law.

    2009 robbery
2010 firing and possessing a gun on school property

There are reportedly three other incidents between these crimes according to the Orlando Sentinel.

2014 criminal mischief that resulted in property damage
    2014 battery on a woman
    2014 improper care of animals

  20. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    My bad
    Welcome Gil

  21. USFBUC Says:

I bring all of this up not to disparriage Cook but to show that Mixon is being turned into this years violence poster child. The NFL and media want to show people that they care and the reality is that the NFL and the media don’t care at all.

  22. USFBUC Says:

I still like Cook and Mixon I would just keep them on a short leash.

  23. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @USFBUC…
    I
    I
    I___’

    CRASH!!!!!
    jaw hitting floor lol

  24. USFBUC Says:

Also while we are talking criminal records I’m going to pass on getting Kenny Britt in FA. Britt has been arrested 7 times already and is only outdone by Pacman Jones who has been arrested 10 times.

  25. Joeypoppems Says:

    @USFBUC @WhatdaBUCisthis @Buc1987

On the topic of Cook and Mixon. You can add Dede Westbrook to the list. He had domestic abuse issues as well which also go unnoticed. Thats the power of video footage

  26. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @Joey… Sup big homie
What I’m getting at is that there all kids and we don’t know everything about all of them and it’s a gamble. If the NFL says he’s eligible. Then I say we give him a shot. Some team will. Man if his character checks out I want em. Who better to learn from on how to repair your shattered image than Jameis himself… My only question about him is does he love football

  27. USFBUC Says:

I agree Whatdabuc, the team should do their work and determine if they are okay with a player and if they feel he is past his issues. I also feel that the team should draft a guy if they want him.

  28. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

I know I’ll get bashed for saying this, but you know what, I DON’T CARE
Cook does not LOVE football. Constantly getting in trouble is a less than stellar trait to have… There’s a pattern… Lack of focus maybe… Desire… Entitled feeling…
    SCREW THAT
    #no2Cook

  29. SB Says:

WHY is everyone all over Mixon’s nuts? Perine is better.
    http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/joe-mixon-1.html

    http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/samaje-perine-1.html

  30. BuccaneEric75 Says:

USF, thanks for the Cook info. I didn’t know he was into all that. Makes the concerns about Winston before the draft look like nothing, which it was. I’m not too concerned about our 1st round pick. We have a lot of ways we could go.

  31. SB Says:

I put links up comparing Mixon to Perine but it is under moderation. All you Mixon cats should check out the other dude that was in that backfield.

  32. USFBUC Says:

@ Whatdabuc do notice though that I did not find any additional reports in the past two years for Cook. It could be that he was a dumb kid making dumb decisions and he has now matured.

When I was in my late teens I had several incidents that I was fortunate didn’t get me in trouble and since I matured I don’t even drink. Again I just bring this up to show that the NFL and the media are just purposefully targeting Mixon so they can preach and look good from their glass houses.

  33. USFBUC Says:

@ SB Perine is a stud too and broke APs all time rushing record at OU while sharing carries. He does have some ankle or knee issues though.

  34. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

USFBUC… Same here homie… Draft him if you like him. Anything after the 1st would represent tremendous value. I’m not saying take him second but your filling a need and in reality getting BPA. Damn shame…
Some of Y’all silly coming here blasting Mixon and praising Cook.

  35. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Good for him he’s staying out of trouble now. With that being said, PASS
@SB… I’m just wanting a big bruiser type back, that’s all. Resign Rodgers for that burst. Bring me a bruiser… Oh with no ankle issues please lol

  36. SB Says:

I didn’t know about the injuries USF but if he can put up Over 4000 yards and 51 TDs While injured And sharing carries then I want him in the 3rd if he is still there.

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Basssingers a moron

  38. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Fantastic work USF should make waiting at 19 all the easier for Mr. Licht. See the thing is this my point has never been Mixon shouldn’t get a chance my position is his draft status will be hurt by the existence of video. Now when people come to online site’s like one and day “oh my” about things pertaining to other human beings without posting they’re own laundry it makes me look at them side ways. I’m sure the same people cheered loudly everytime Michael Pittman scored a TD. Tale chair man cause I can’t you holier than thou muthaf@!!s.

  39. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    @joe
Wow, sorry to hear about big dog. He is in my prayers

  40. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Truth be told NFL fans don’t give a d@$! about these people only care about seeing your fav team be successful. You act all holy to make yourselves feel good when something isc released about a person. Like yo @$$ never stole, never bump someone’s car and kept it moving, never left that dog on the highway. Man you can tell alot about people by the words they use. I’ve done plenty in my life I look back not proud of. But not single one of you mofos can judge me for a single transgression. Stick to being fans man. Stop fronting like you care about these people when in actuality all you care about isc rather he’ll run fast or hit hard. Fake @$$ Pontiffs on this site.

  41. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Now feel free to continue your little holy fest. Be a man and type your full name onb this site so we research some of y’all @$$. I wanna see who has the b@!!$ to do that.

  42. orlbucfan Says:

Why are we talking about head cases to start with??????/ I know that NFL scouts are paid money to do their jobs. Get off your rear and scout. There are plenty of talented kids who would love to be UDFAs, etc. They aren’t gang banging head cases. Their problem is they don’t play for the big NCAA football factories. So what?! This has always been a sore point for me. Make the scouts earn their bread.

  43. orlbucfan Says:

    Nothing was confusing. –Joe
Boy, do I hate the Big C!!!!!!!!!

  44. Steve from Oregon Says:

Steve Mora Oregon….id pass on Mixon and Cook. OJ Howard is looking much better

  45. USFBUC Says:

It’s not just the fans though NosBos the NFL doesn’t care about the players either. I do know that Mixon or Cook would look good on the back of one of those all red jerseys

  46. Jason Says:

Still rather have Jameis over Marcus. The best ability is availability and Marcus has yet to play one full season healthy in the NFL.

  47. Blake_bucsfan Says:

My real name is Mark David Chapman. Do your worst.

  48. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Hey ORL, maybe you should check the Bucs roster again. As far as I know there is only one guy from Hobart playing in the NFL. Harvard has never been a mecca for NFL tight ends. Ultimately though the most talented kids are playing for the big programs. It is a pretty basic thing that shouldn’t even have to be explained. Alabama probably has 30 guys on their team that can play at the next level. The other big programs out there probably have 5-10 on average. Garret Miles was not have a hard time choosing between Texas A&M and Vernont A&M coming out of college. The one offs like Marpet are extremely rare.

  49. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Nos Bos
Man I’m just pointing out that the media has an agenda on Mixon IMO. As somebody who wanted Hardy, I don’t really care who plays for us… Long as they love football anyway. My point is if you can gain access the the Shield AND got talent, heart. Then sign em up. I want to win

  50. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I feel you Whata and I’m not going to act like I know these people because I can pull info on them and simply begin reading. I use to love MJ on the court off the court I could careless about the dude. I love what they can do for the team I root for, that personal stuff is none of my business. People in sports are humans like everyone else. Sometimes they do stupid stuff like everyone else. I’ll say it I never stated Mixon shouldn’t get a chance go check the archives. Me and bklaes bet is his draft spot. And as far you go blkae just because a record of you may or may not be in existence does not make you an angle. Quite the contary you could’ve done stuff in life and not have gotten caught for it dude. Which seems likely to me seeing as how your heart is filled with hate based on your mission to discredit one Mr. Dalvin Cook.

  51. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

You say you are a man of God, so are you the Messiah that millions of people are waiting to return??? Are you without sin because you don’t have a record. If you study the Good book I assure you it states only one individual was without fault and all the rest fall short homeboy. So which is it am I being honored by Savior with these little back and fourths daily if so I must truly be special in the eye of “The Most High”.

  52. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And for the record I cheered everytime Michael Pittman scored a touchdown. Same way I would if Dalvin or Mixon. Ima a fan man.

  53. DB55 Says:

    Gil

Welcome bro. Let me break this down for you shun.

Jameis is the greatest QB in the history of sports (since the Greek olympics) and there is no debate. PERIOD. REJOICE FOR THE KINGDOM OF JAMEIS IS HERE. let this be the last time you type sugar tips name (mm) on this here corner of the interweb.

Martin is the best RB on the team. Once quiz rushes for a 1k yards at least once we can revisit this statement.

Finally, you can forget Mixon. As a matter of fact I’m trying to get rid of every sooner on this team. Only steers and qeers in Oklahoma and I don’t see any steers over here. You heard?

  54. Buccfan37 Says:

Blake.. Mark David Chapman is your name. Explain further please.

  55. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    ——————————–
Yeah, it was confusing. Also checked some other sites for more details, and there wasn’t anything. Not flaming you guys, just commenting. I stand by my opinion which is worth about as much as the rest of the krewe on here that NFL scouts can work harder regarding head cases.

  57. FutureBucsGM Says:

No excuses for Jameis. Marcus won 2016. But that’s not what makes Jameis special whether or not he beats Marcus statistically.

Jameis is building up a culture in Tampa Bay, there’s something brewing in Tampa Bay. And it won’t show up on the stat sheet.

Martin has to be given a chance to compete and get his spot back. Yeah Doug was hurt, so was Jacquizz at one point. He’s going through something and I think we should stand by him. Every year yall ready to get rid of someone and then every year we complain about how we let players get away like Mike Bennett, LeGarette Blount, Aqib Talib. What we have with Doug right now is leverage. Renegotiate the contract and allow him to compete with this year’s draft pick. There’s value in that.

As far as Mixon goes, hopefully it’s no where near our RED Program. It’s one thing to be falsely accused of abuse but to be the face of abuse is untolerable what does that say? Forget the money or sponsorships let’s talk, Family values.

  58. Brandon Hendricks Says:

Couldn’t agree more! Keep these blogs comin from the cave. Thanks Joes. Keep great content coming!!!

  59. delson Says:

I like perine but his production has dropped and one reason could be his weight gain. He weighs 240. If we draft him i want perine to lose about 15-20 pounds. I was watching tape on him last night, (matt waldman) on youtube they made an interesting point. The perine we see playing now is a fraction of himself from his first year as a starting rb. You can see that he doesnt have the confidence in his burst as he approaches closing holes. He lowers his shoulders n tries to push through. Whereas a younger perine would’ve shot thru that hole. All that said i like perine i hope we take him. There is a possibility that he loses the weight n returns to the dominant rb h was. Also at the weight he’s at now he’s one helluva stronger back now he’s incredible on short distances and even better inside the 5.

  60. Mick Says:

Perine has an 8 minute highlight reel of absolutely blowing up defenders. This is our next Alstott+Dunn combined. Dude is a beast.

  61. SB Says:

    ^^^^^ what Mick said.

  62. Maze Says:

Who cares draft Mixon you softies

  63. SB Says:

Kid rushed for 427 yards in One Game!!!

  64. DB55 Says:

    Mick

Just saw Perines highlights, about 3 plays into it I got a massive boner.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=10GNnA99W_8

  65. SB Says:

Mixon is not as good as Perine Maze. Don’t know why everyone is talking about Mixon

  66. Chris Says:

I like Cook, but USF, you should know, it dorsnt count when its the Noles breaking laws

  67. delson Says:

Perins vs texas tech 2016 watch that game. He goes head to head with the mlb n absolutely destroys his confidence. Thats the ype of back he needs to play as consistently

  68. Chris Says:

Perine =: Trent Richardson, almost the same size and hits holes just as slow .

  69. Chris Says:

Think my co.ment got deleted earluer, but much respect and prayers for the Big Dog…a passionate icon of Tampa sports radio.

  70. delson Says:

The entire 2nd drive of oklahoma is when perine beasts. Even as a fb blocking he destroys

  71. LakeLandBuc Says:

I was on board with drafting Joe Mixon. But after reading the victim police statement, I believe her. With that said, I wouldn’t draft or sign Mixon as a UDFA. Dalvin Cook also carry a lot of baggage, even though Cook won an acquittal in court. His situation is similar to Joe Mixon situation, I wouldn’t draft him either.

  72. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

@SB…. Just watched both of there highlights.i like both but Mixon looks faster, better control of his body. And seem to be more versatile.
Mixon for me. Real talk though if we draft Perine. If be OK with it I guess. He’s not gonna be running over NFL players like that. Not elusive, twitchy enough… From what I just saw

  73. delson Says:

    https://youtu.be/3qLgsalm2mI

  74. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

@Lakelandbuc… We shouldn’t hold there personal life in the light man. Damn we all do wrong big homie. We’re all guilty of passing judgement on these players… But it should be about the performance on the field. Not what they got caught doing. Caught… But what happens in the shadows…
I want to win. By whatever power you pray to, I want to win. They’re MODERN DAY GLADIATORS… Not role models for our kids. DIYS…I WANT BLOOD SWEAT& TEARS…SH!T TALKING, TD CELEBRATIONS.
Btw… If there players risk THEIR bodies for OUR entertainment then by all means they should be allowed ANY & ALL kinds of treatment

  75. delson Says:

He will run over dbs n smaller lbs in the nfl and challenge the biggee guys. I have no doubt

  76. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

This is great. With this latest that means one can definitely scratch Dalvin from Coughlin’s he’s quite military like and is close to his grsnd kids many of whom are females. You can scratch Cincy do you really think Marvin Jones can afford to add yet another checked past after missing the playoffs??? All good when your winning but when the lising begins outs whole nother st story. I’m cpol wit a Eaglrs co-worker who is dialed inn with his team, says early reports they are seeking another wideout or O linemen. The Ravens after Ray Rice I highly doubt it. I skip carplina cause they’re taking Fournette better fit for they’re power based run game. That leaves me only concerned with the colts now. Looking more and more like we won’t have to move up at all. Great work USF.

  77. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

As far we are concerned do some research on coach K and his time coaching in college. He don’t shy away from so called bad boys trust me. Jason Licht said while recruiting Fameis “you don’t have to necessarily be a choir boy to play for us”. Can’t wait for draft night.

  78. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Jason Licht also said during 45 minute radio interview to end the season that year his words” you know when you visit a program like FSU you come away realizing they have a wealth of talent there”. Might he have noticed a particular RB while on campus. I’m sure if you search you can find the interview. Again in taking all bets. No Jersey one’s tho ifv you serious put up some cold hard cash.

  79. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And if you don’t wanna listen to the whole interview just forward down to the last minute of it. Those are the last words he says.

  80. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    http://draftbreakdown.com/video/o-j-howard-vs-tennessee-2015-2/

I’d say that cook goes either to the Jags, the stinking Panthers, the Jets, or the Colts.

O.J. Howard could still reasonably fall to us and he is just such a good all around football player. Punishing blocker, and explosive an explosive, seem busting receiver with strong reliable hands. I’d take him all day long even if Cook was still available.

  81. delson Says:

    Me too @blake

  82. SB Says:

Chris…….Perine had more yards AND Tds in his Freshman season than Richardson had in his Fresh AND Soph seasons Combined. Richardson isn’t Half the rb that Perine is. Don’t know how the kid is staying so far under the radar.

  83. Chris Says:

As slow as Perine is, just like Richardson, he wont make it to t ht e lbs and dbs. He’ll get blown up by the Dline, slow, slow, slow. Watchimg him destroy Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech . The Big 12 defenses definitely have alot to be desired

  84. Chris Says:

Yeah against the SEC, hes slow, hes bulit the same as Richardson, Richardson had more hype

  85. Chris Says:

Because the scouts know hes slow.

  86. Chris Says:

Richsrdson split carries his fresh, soph years, look st ypc, there almost the same.Same back, slow to the line, same size

  87. SB Says:

Whatever bro. Kid has broken all of APs records and holds the NCAA record for most yards in a game at 427. AND he split carries with Mixon in his Soph and Jr years. STILL had over 1000 yards Each season. Like I said. Richardson is not the RB that Perine is. Perine beats him in every category as a Single back.

  88. SB Says:

Richardson managed 35 TDs behind Bama’s OL in three years while splitting carries for two.
Perine managed 51 TDs behind OK’s OL in three years while splitting carries.

  89. Joeypoppems Says:

It’s not the best idea to compare players based on stats. Every player is in a different situation. I say it again. Stats do not tell the whole story.

As far as why Perine is “under the radar”, imo it is because the way the NFL has evolved. A lot of teams these days look for a RB that can be a weapon in the passing game since the NFL is a passing league. Receiving wasn’t Perine’s role in their offense (40 rec in 3 years) which hurts him. In today’s NFL if you aren’t effective as a receiver you will most likely be in a committee with someone who is. Like Martin/Sims, Peterson/Mckinnon, Ivory/Yeldon, etc.

That reason alone is why I would pick Cook over Fournette Round 1, McCaffrey and Kamara over Foreman in Round 2, and Gallman over Perine in Round 3.

  92. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Coughlin old school and like to pound the rock with beef. He’ll draft Foreman in the 2nd. The order will be Fournette the first to come off the board to Carolina,Cook next to the Bucs(Jason won’t be able to pass on an explosive Seminole) after will be Kamara to the Packers and the last RB in the first round will be McCaffery to the Patriots because Belichess loves versatility. Every other RB in the draft will fall where they may.

  93. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I wouldn’t mind if he’d accept me. That dude insight unmatched. Now as for you outsde of Samuels I haven’t learned much.

  94. Blake_bucsfan Says:

thats because you remain pretty much fixated on 1 guy.

  95. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

A guy that would be a tremendous asset to our beloved Bucs. Don’t fault me because I view RB as the biggest concern of this ball club right now(imo). Why not endores the best RB in the class. Should repost Lakeland words from the cbs writer you know the same people highlighting all those 10 fumbles. One a throw away out of bounds and two others against oregon when the whole team fumbled 5 times. I know a fix when I witness one so in truth this 10 fumbles more 6 or 7 over three years.

  96. Joeypoppems Says:

I’m actually becoming a HUGE McCaffrey fan. Love eberything about his game and everything about him off the field. There are a ton of articles out there that talk about his leadership and work ethic and how he pushes his teammates to be better everyday.

The question is where is a good spot to draft him? A lot of expert mock drafts don’t have him in the 1st round at all, but there were reports a couple days ago that the Panthers are interested in him which apparently means #8 overall.

With those leadership qualities combined with his unique skill set compared to the other top RBs in the draft (by unique I mean he is a weapon as a runner, receiver, AND as a returner. To my knowledge of all the top RBs in this draft he is the only one that returns punts/kicks) I would almost go as far to say he is a perfect fit for what we are building character wise AND on the field. So if we do fill a lot of positions of “need” in FA to where RB is the clear biggest need going into the draft and McCaffrey is sitting there at #19. It would be tough to pass him up imo.

  97. USFBUC Says:

Depending on wha we do in FA still might try and move to 12 to get cook

  98. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And that part he stated about disk threat is why I personally believe Dalvin is of major desire by our brass. Fournette can catch yes but was he asked to do much of that at LSU no. He will be perfect for Cam seeing is how Rivera is mentioning taking the ball out of his hands and focusing more running the footbal.

  99. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Scouts have been heralding this running back class as the best & deepest class in years. The best since AP and Beast Mode both got picked in round 1.

Let me ask you a serious question, if you truly believe that Cook is the best RB available, why do you think that several running back needy teams would pass on him?

  100. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

USF you rest assured Licht won’t be waiting til 19. I’m just stating after all the investigative work brought to surface today about Dalvin I wouldn’t be surprised if we stood pat and grab him. “They would be crazy not to draft him at 19” Marshal Faulk. There is plenty info out there to support Koetter and Licht bit shying away from a few incedents. H3ll Licht wanted Fameis and didn’t give a d@$! How anyone felt it about.

  101. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Name a few Blake and I’ll give my thought.

  102. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

My opinion Pop McCaffery has Pats written all over him.

  103. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And in not saying that because he’s white in saying that because of versatility. Belichess had a WR playng cb once.

  104. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

That young man returned kicks in concert with playing RB.

  105. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I should’ve said best all around. Pass catching and between the tackle running. I wouldn’t give him rock 25x a game tho he’s not built for that. Now if we about to go run heavy I want Fournette or Foreman to be honest.

  106. Blake_bucsfan Says:

The Browns, The Jags, The Jets, The Colts, The Eagles, and The Ravens all have a need at running back.

And don’t give me his checkered past, because As we all know, there is no video evidence of Dalvin Cooks incidents, and that seems to be the only thing the NFL cares about.

The Ravens were preparing to resign Ray Rice before the video evidence of the event was released. There was no such out roar from the national sports media about Joe Mixon until footage of the incident was released to the public.

And Dalvin wasn’t convicted of his accusation. So why would all those teams pass on the Guy that you view as the best among the rest?

  107. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I’m sounding the Dalvin horn because the system he played in in school is quite similar to what we do here in Tampa.

  108. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Allow me to school you son. The Browns taking the #1 rated kid Myles that’s a no brainer along with Deshean Watson because RG3 is not having yourself a franchise QB. Coughlin likes beefy RBs hince 6’3 260lbs Brandin Jacobs. Ravens forget it after Ray Rice Ian just told you ya boy undraftable but they’ll take DC wit a similar incedent please. My co-worker who’s an eagle says they are talking WR or O line. Jets and Colts I have no ideas. Now if you follow those teams and can confirm they view RB as a major need round one do us all a favor and show us the link you good at that.

  109. Joeypoppems Says:

idk how I feel about McCaffrey to the Pats. They already have Dion Lewis who has a very similar skill set in being able to run, receive, and be a returner. Granted, Lewis can’t stay healthy. Imo if they add McCaffrey they have 3 RBs with similar skill sets in White, Lewis and McCaffrey. If anything I would say if they lose Blount in FA, D’onta Foreman could be in play at #32.

Idk tho. McCaffrey has all the intangibles that not only we love, but Licht and Koetter love. Very passionate about the game of football, team first mentality, insane work ethic, natural leader, that stereotypical “first one in the gym and last to leave” mind set. He has everything that all the GMC haters wish GMC had lol. I watched an interview he did with Colin Cowherd in November. He was asked what winning the Heisman, the most prestigious award in college sports, would mean to him. His answer was (and I am paraphrasing) “Doesn’t have much value to me. Football is all about getting wins and doing what I can to help my team”. Perfect answer.

That mind set and mentality along with that of Kwon, Jameis, ME, Noah Spence, VH3. It’s a perfect fit in this new culture we are building. Then add in he fills a need as a starting RB and as a returner. It is almost too good of a fit imo.

  110. Blake_bucsfan Says:

But as you have purported many a time, You view Dalvin Cook as an all around weapon. In my mind, all around weapons should fit into nearly any system.

To that effect, the archetype of RB that Dalvin Cook is would fit particularly well into the offenses run by the Panthers, the Colts, and the Eagles especially.

So why would they pass on him?

  111. Blake_bucsfan Says:

So let me get this straight, You’re 100 percent confident that the Eagles won’t draft Cook, Because your friend that’s an Eagles fan say they want WR or Oline.

    Can’t argue with that logic…

  112. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    Consider me schooled I guess.

  113. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And I’ll take the insight of fan of a particular team before I listen to your bs anyday. Pop we all know Nelichess swap out RBs like its nothing. What’s Dion’s contract situation???

  114. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

  122. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Ok. There is a difference between mathematical stats, and editorial opinion first of all. Second, 90 percent of the links I post are videos of either highlight reels or game tapes on players that I like, or dislike.

I’m trying to generate interesting dialogue on a variety of draft prospects that I feel would benefit our team. Or the ones I feel could be dangerous picks, or maybe a little over rated.

  123. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Best meaning he does it all well. That’s not saying he should go to a run heavy scheme and be given the ball 25x a game. Jimbo usually have him the ball around 18 or 19 times a game period. Why as GM would I draft him to do something he didn’t do in school. But what did he do pass catch put backfield and run between the tackle.

The panthers don’t strictly run power running plays. The also run the Read spread option. And they throw to their running backs as well as their full backs and tight ends. Dalvin is actually pretty similar in style to Deangelo Williams.

  131. Joeypoppems Says:

Dion Lewis is a UFA in 2018. That does open the door for drafting McCaffrey I admit. Just for fun I looked up the Patriots draft history from 2000 (the year Belichick was hired) to last year. They have drafted 10 RBs in that window. Of those 10 only 1 was before Round 3 (Laurence Maroney in 2006, Round 1).

The RBs they just won the SB with were drafted on Day 3 or not at all. White in the 4th, Lewis in the 5th by Philly, and we all know Blount went undrafted. With their draft history and the way they have gotten success out of RBs in the mid rounds idk if they will go RB early. Its possible tho.

  132. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

What’s the issue you feel all around means can do anything for any system. I feel differently. No harm.

  137. LakeLandBuc Says:

Marlon Mack is the most underrated RB in the draft.

  138. LakeLandBuc Says:

CBS Sports has him rated as the 6th best back in the draft. But everyone else has him rated low.

  139. Joeypoppems Says:

Based on talent I would be surprised if Cook fell all the way to #19 too. Lets just be honest tho. It is waaaay to early in the process to try and predict when all these guys could get picked. What I said a few posts ago about McCaffrey is a perfect example. The experts right now have him falling out of round 1 for the most part. Then there are reports like this:

    http://www.fanragsports.com/news/report-panthers-interested-christian-mccaffrey-first-round/

A lot can change between now and the draft especially since we are before the combine and more importantly FA.

  140. Kevin Says:

Problem.is if Mixon geta drafted late by new england, he will play his ass.of and.stay out of trouble, if he is drafted by any other team, he will screw.up….Martin MUST be brought back only as a backup 2 or.3. Nobody is goi g to sign him big money with his history. I just know when.I watch Christian Mcaffrey highlights, hes not the fastest or biggest, but he has incredible vission. The guy sees holes in the next level before they even form.he manipulates the defenders decisions with his body movements. Ive been most.impressed with his skill set overall. Hands, return game everything

  141. Tbbucs3 Says:

Mccaffrey played in the weakest defensive conference in college football. Reggie bush was 10 times better and faster than Mccaffrey coming out of college and bush has been average at best his whole NFL career. He’s not big enough to be a full time back.

  142. SB Says:

32 teams whiffed on David Johnson at least Twice
32 teams whiffed on Le’veon Bell at least Thrice.
    Just sayin’

  143. Joeypoppems Says:

How big do you need to be to be a full time back? 5′ 8″ Devonta Freeman looked pretty good when he was the full time guy for the Falcons in 2015. Reggie Bush was also riddled with injuries in his NFL career.

  144. Joeypoppems Says:

    Le’Veon Bell was a round 2 pick. 48th overall

  145. mesh Says:

I personally WOULD be upset if we take Cook in the first. Why? Because then we can’t take someone else in the first that would be of potentially longer term value. If we take Cook in the first DE’s are not going to be available and neither will be OT’s. WR and RB’s will be available in the 2nd round. With that said, if Corey Davis is there – take him and the same goes for Mike Williams. They likely won’t be. There are too many other teams with a need for receiver talent.

  146. SB Says:

My bad pops. Thought he was a 4th.

  147. Joeypoppems Says:

    @SB

It is still a good point you bring up. Good RBs can be found anywhere in the draft.

  148. NFLNut Says:

    *********

In the last 3 games Mariota played, with the playoffs on the line he completed 45.2% of his passes and threw just one TD … like Marcus but he is nowhere near the player Jameis is and isn’t even in the same universe as a “leader”.

    **********

  149. LakeLandBuc Says:

My 1st round pick would be DE Taco Charlton.

  150. Tbbucs3 Says:

Freeman is a totally different back than Mccafrey, small backs work if they have power to them like MJD, the short stocky ones. I liked to see Christian Mccafrey try and juke Kam Chancellor.

  151. LakeLandBuc Says:

Jordan Howard was pick number 150 and all he did was rush for 1313 yards and make the Pro Bowl as a rookie. And he did this for the Chicago Bears, a 3-13 team.

  152. StPeteBucsfan Says:

Welcome… since there were loud whispers in the community that doug was “partying” isnt that another indictment of clueless licht

Cmon Dusthy you can do better than that!! I’ve seen you do it before.

That’s not just lame and irresponsible it’s character assassination by inunendo.

Again do you know what the word “attribution” means. Post an article at least ONE other opinion besides yours that there were LOUD whispers in the community…WHO heard these whispers and where did they come from.

Just coming on here and typing crap doesn’t cut it. You wouldn’t want to read a post about “loud whispers about Dushthy” without any substantiation. This does not reflect poorly on Licht whatsoever….it reflects on you as a poster. Plz back this up with some fellow rumor mongers at least. I’ve been on JBF since Licht took over and I have yet to read about “loud whispers” about Doug until you started posting them last week. So the whispers couldn’t have been TOO loud.

  153. delson Says:

Leveon bell was also a heavy rb who lost weight n balled. Like perine. .

  154. Tbbucs3 Says:

Some of you act like there are hidden gems at RB in every draft. For every David Johnson and Leveon Bell there are 30 other Montee Balls.

  155. LakeLandBuc Says:

I was hoping that Nick Chubb came out this year. But we can still get him next season, we don’t have to reach for a RB.

  156. Joeypoppems Says:

I never said Freeman and McCaffrey were the same type of back. Mccaffrey who is listed at 6ft 200 lbs (and I know that is probably inaccurate) is apparently viewed as “not big enough”. All I did was pick a back that has had success that is much smaller than him. And actually Daniel Jeremiah did a scouting report on McCaffrey in June 2016 and the player he said he was similar to was Devonta Freeman, saying:

“It’s tough to find a current NFL comparison for him. However, I do see a lot of similarities to the Atlanta Falcons’ Devonta Freeman when he was coming out of Florida State. They don’t have the same physique, but their running styles and diverse skill sets are very similar.”

  157. Tbbucs3 Says:

Run style wise I can’t agree with Jeremiah on that one. I’ve watch Freeman since he was taking handoffs from EJ Manual. At best, I see Mccafrey being a James White and that not breakout Super Bowl performance James White.

  158. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Tbbucs3

“Some of you act like there are hidden gems at RB in every draft”

    2016: Kenneth Dixon(4th), Jordan Howard(5th), Rob Kelley(Undrafted)
    2015: David Johnson (3rd), Jay Ajayi (5th)
2014: Carlos Hyde (2nd), Davonta Freeman (4th), Isaiah Crowell (undrafted)
2013: Le’Veon Bell (2nd, Latavius Murray (6th), CJ Anderson (undrafted)
    2012: Lamar Miller (4th), Alfred Morris (6th)

They have been there the last 5 years. Up to the scouts to find them

  159. Tbbucs3 Says:

Key word there is gems, only 3 of those guys are elite. Were trying to find a franchise running back not someone who’s decent. If you want a franchise back your best bets in the 1st round.

  160. StPeteBucsfan Says:

I do not watch Stanford football. But most people think McCaffrey got hosed out of the Heisman the year before last.

I only saw highlights…and every time it was McCaffrey making sharp cuts and then running past everybody. He was a track star in high school…he is “projected” to run a mid 4.3 to low 4.4 at the combine. He can catch but he has one glaring weakness. Because of his lack of size he’s considered a weak blocker.

Whether we draft him might depend upon Koetter finding his fullback because McCaffrey is not going to provide any protection for #3. But he can tote the rock and he can catch and he’s fast…almost .2 faster in the 40 than the “Muscle Turtle”. He does not get hauled down from behind when he’s given a head start.

  161. StPeteBucsfan Says:

    Tbucs

I’m with you…if you want elite…you almost always have to go first round for ANY position…again the draft odds are pretty easily quantifiable…the lower you go the higher the % of failure…after the 3rd round there is less than a 50% success rate.

It just depends where we want to gamble and what we feel are our greatest needs..I want an elite RB…we have ONE elite WR already…we have the TE who lead the league in TE TD’s…and is just coming into his own…we have a slot receiver in Hump…we need a #2…so there it is for me…

AGAIN…can anybody here tell me another team that had slower skill positions.
Someone brought up NE’s slow WR’s…what they didn’t bring up was how Atlanta shut down those slow WR’s in the first half!!! It got sooo bad that Brady threw an uncharacteristic pick six.

But again I confess…I want an exciting team to watch…not a team dinking and dunking down the field with short routes to tiny slow WR’s.

  162. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@Tbbucs3 Aint no such thing as a guarantee bro. There have been numerous Rb’s selected in the first round that were busts. And plenty of late round picks that had solid/ starting caliber careers.

And Stpete, I realized last night that the only thing keeping me from endorsing McCaffrey was the dearth of successful white running backs in the modern NFL.

But then I did some more research, and found out that His father was a 3 time Superbowl champion, and his mother an olympian

  163. Blake_bucsfan Says:

And you are right about his cuts, He does just about everything really well. But his agility, the quickness of his feet, his intelligence, his routes, his hands, and his speed are all really phenomenal.

And while he is on the smaller side now, I can see his frame supporting 15-20 more pounds.

And his skills as a receiver out of the back field are second to none. I’m really starting to warm up to Christian McCaffrey.

  164. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Stpete

McCaffrey and some other prospects in the Colorado area participated in a mock combine. He ran two 40 yard dashes and was clocked at 4.46 and 4.48 which is faster than I expected (I was expecting low 4.5’s).

    @Blake

Im with you. As I said before Im becoming a HUGE McCaffrey fan. Take everything you said and add in his leadership and work ethic and passion for football. He makes a lot of sense for the Bucs

    @Tbbucs

We just have different definitions of “gems” I guess. I think of gem as value and all those guys that arent considered elite besides Dixon were starters. Finding a starter on Day 3 to me is a gem.

  165. delson Says:

Before ya’ll jump on the mccafrey train know that his oline played very well every hat had a hat. Mccafrey had patience tho n let the lanes open up for him. Thats what a good oline will do for ur rb. Give’em confidence to wait. Some rbs dont have that patience cuz their oline sucks n allow pursuers through. I didnt see much juking i seen him chop his feet n change direction n then beat the defense with his feet. I like mccafrey but i’d give more credit to his blockers, then give mccafrey his credit for turning on the jets. I dont see what the buzz is about alvin kamara i didnt see much from the tapes i watched. But perine is a punishing back as a blocker and as a runner. I’d ask him to lose 15-20 lbs tho n i’d bet u his explosiveness will be back n he could do it without losing much running power. That power can ruin a team’s morale. Like it did vs texas tech.

  166. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Blake

And to continue on his family, one of his brother is a WR on the Packers and his younger brother is a 5 star QB recruit that just committed to Michigan. Its like a family of super athletes lol

  167. LakeLandBuc Says:

Ed McCaffrey was John Elway top WR with the Broncos ( after Rod Smith retired). They were real close, Elway might draft his son.

  168. SB Says:

    ………………….

Name all the 1st round RBs in the playoffs this yr. Now name all the 1st round RBs that made the final four.

  169. SB Says:

I don’t want a RB in the first rd. this much is obvious. Currently McCaffery is projected to go high first round. Cook is projected to go low first round. This is why I am not holding my nuts on either of these one. I am hoping Davis will still be on board when we pick but we haven’t had the Combine yet so…….
IF we made a jump and took McCaffery at 19 I wouldn’t be hugely upset unless Davis and Charleton were still on the board.

Gil, Congrats on joining the Joes! I really enjoyed your “introductory” column for JoeBucsFan.com. I remember reading your work on BucsBlitz with Justin, and I always enjoyed it. I joined Justin toward the end of the BucsBlitz run, and I am so appreciative of working with him. Now, concerning your column. As far as FA is concerned, I would love Campbell immensely! I also wouldn’t mind Pryor if he’s available. As far as the draft is cornered, I want Cook badly. I also would love Corey Davis. Unfortunately, I feel they’ll both be gone when we pick. Thanks Jameis!!! Haha! So, I like Soloman and Thomas from Texas. I believe you nailed Mixon to a tee. He’s a punk that the Bucs don’t need in the locker room. I look forward to reading more of your columns and opinions. Go Bucs!

Take McCaffrey in the 1st and have him and Quizz with Peyton/Sims as the 3rd RB. Cut Martin and make Sims battle with Peyton for the 3rd RB position. Then draft the best available WR in the 2nd round. Kupp is awesome imo. Just not sure if he will still be on the board.

With regards to Mixon. I would consider signing him as an undrafted FA and see what he can do. But that will never happen and I can’t honestly blame the Bucs for that decision.

kids who murder can get a second chance but kids who made a bad decision at 17 can not. I don’t tolerate DV violence in no way shape or form but to say this kid should not get an opportunity because of an incident that occurred at 17 SMMFH!!! I know a lot of you will not understand but calling some people the N word to their face is worst then spitting on them. Im rooting for you kid because unlike most I to have made mistakes when I was younger and I thank God I’m not been judge on them still at 45!!!

I find it funny that people talk about doug martin and his “partying”. What 20 something millionaire doesnt party from time to time? What average 20 something yr old doesnt party from time to time? Doug having a good time on his own time is a total non issue. Everyone does it. I dont care if you want to talk about his drug habits, or ineffectiveness or injuries, but dont talk about his having a good time like it is a negative. They would have to cut Jameis if simply “partying” is some huge red flag. Get real guys. The case against martin is strong enough without being petty about partying. Lol
