Jags Zeroed In?

Has inside knowledge.

The coaching rumors concerning Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith continue to smolder.

Just when it appeared Smith might be headed to the west coast and the Los Angeles San Diego Chargers, perhaps Smith won’t be leaving the state of Florida.

That’s the word from no less an authority than former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik.

Speaking on his Sunday night wrap-up show with co-host Zig Fracassi heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Dominik claims the Jags have completed their interviewing process to fill the void left by the worst NFL head coach since Pearl Harbor, and have narrowed the field to a defensive coach.

@ZigFracassi: Mark Dominik: No other coaching interviews for the #Jaguars. They’ve honed in on their guy, w/a defensive background.

Dominik added he thinks the Jags have “honed in on their guy.” Dominik also admitted he would be “surprised” if the Jags did not announce their new coach this week.

As far as Smith’s chances of being hired by Jacksonville, Dominik cited Smith’s history with Jags GM Dave Caldwell, who was the Dixie Chicks’ director of player personnel when Smith coached at Atlanta.

If the Jags are aiming to hire a defensive guy, Smith has to be at the top of their list unless he had a terrible interview.

Mock Dominik if you wish, but his sources are fellow general managers if not owners. Additionally, Joe remembers a few other predictions Dominik nailed in recent times: The Bucs would draft America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston; the Bucs would hire winning coach Dirk Koetter, and the Giants would hire Ben McAdoo (a job for which Smith was a finalist).

  1. Defense Rules Says:

Mike Smith would be a great choice for Jax HC. Jaguars have drafted quite a bit of excellent young talent on defense over past couple of years, but don’t seem to have developed them very well. Smitty excels at that, and with one more strong draft this year should be able to get Jax on-track quickly. Hate to lose him as our DC, but he certainly deserves another shot at HC and Jacksonville seems like a good fit. Now for the BIG question Joe … did Dom happen to mention who’ll replace Smitty as Bucs DC?

  2. Tampa Tony Says:

    Mock Dominik if you wish

It’s too easy Joe, it’s just too easy to mock someone who will never hold a NFL job again

  3. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Jameis Winston is going to be on Mike and Mike today!

  4. Kalind Says:

Pretty sure it’s Ben McAdoo…cause if my man Mark predicted Bob McAdoo, he missed. Close though. Ben > Bob

  5. SeanyMac in SC Says:

Could these teams needing a HC be waiting until the playoffs or Super Bowl is completed so they could interview the staff from those teams? Why would you limit your search to staff that has not made the playoffs?

Ben not better than Bob if you need a rainbow jumper from the corner with seconds remaining.

    Defense,
Does he also know how the Bucs are going to replace DE Micheal Bennet?

  8. DallasBuc Says:

Drafting Winston and hiring Koetter were givens. Don’t know about his inside info on McAdoo and don’t care because it’s the fn Giants.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

No need to mock the pop-star!!! he has been exposed for what he is !!!! All that inside information of connecting the dots has been out for almost a month!!!!!!

The pop-star never changes!!! LOL !!!!!!

    Worst gm in Bucs history!!!!!!!

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I don’t buy it.

Mike Smith has not even made mention of being interested in another job. Interviews just mean he has the potential to be wowed.

I’m hoping Mike Smith decides to stay another year. Maybe he is guaging the market to set his worth.

  11. JMN Says:

I thought they had to interview at least one black coaching candidate? Also, can we stop calling Dominik a rock star please. He wasn’t even a one hit wonder, unless you consider McCoy his one hit, which a lot of Bucs nation will disagree on.

Hope I don’t offend you Tony because I nitpick here but actually Dominik is working in the NFL and I agree with what I think your fundamental point is..which is that Dom will never hold an NFL GM job again.

But in fairness Dom is actually pretty good in his new job…does as well as the other talking heads if not better.

This happens a lot in sports….player/coach/GM not all that great in the job turns out to be perfectly suited for broadcasting/blogging/commentary.

I was never a Trent Dilfer fan at QB…but I think he makes an excellent analyst because he’s smart, articulate, thoughtful and his right arm has nothing to do with that job.

    SPBF says:
“actually Dominik is working in the NFL”

Um – no he’s not. Dom is employed by BSPN as an analyst. Sorry – but that certainly doesn’t count as working “in the NFL”.

  14. Matthew Says:

An Doug Mirone is the new Jags HC; so all the Mike Smith talk can be put to rest now. Defense improved but was hardly world beating; shocked he was getting looks after such a meh season as a DC.

  15. DallasBuc Says:

Mike Smith is NOT the father!!!!
    Wooowooo

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

    popstar went popstar once again!!!!LOL!!!!!!

  17. feelthepewterpower Says:

NFL.com is reporting Doug Marrone as the favorite…

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

The Jags have already named Doug Marrone Coach.
I told you people Smith wasn’t going anywhere, at least this year.
