Bucs Reward Anger With New Deal
December 31st, 2016UPDATED: 12:34 p.m. – The Bucs have dipped into that giant pile of Team Glazer free agency loot/salary cap room available for 2017.
One rarely spoken of gem of the 2016 season, new free agent punter Bryan Anger, was rewarded for his stunning punting today.
Anyone paying attention could see Anger was totally clutch and a real weapon. Joe can’t remember typing that about a Bucs punter, who was named a Pro Bowl alternate.
Today, the Bucs announced Anger, who was set to be a free agent again after this season, was locked down to a multiyear deal by general manager Jason Licht.
“We brought Bryan here this past offseason believing he had the ability to be one of the best punters in the NFL and he performed as such in 2016,” Licht said, via a team news release. “We are always happy to reward our own players and thrilled to be able to keep Bryan with the Buccaneers for years to come.”
Strong signing — and re-signing- by Licht.
NFL Network is reporting it’s a five-year deal averaging $3.4 million per season. Joe suspects only two years are guaranteed. If accurate, the contract is less than what the Bucs paid punter Michael Koenen in 2011, when he was one of the team’s big offseason acquisitions.

I think I read it was 17 mil, 3.4 a year.

Cant underestimate importance of ST. Good move by mgmt.

If I may be so bold to steal from Mr Soft Serv. Anger has been special.
No brainer Mr Licht. Bring your A game this offseason. No excuses
No More Soft Serv

5 years, 17 million, 3.4 m a year
December 31st, 2016 at 12:40 pm
I was waiting for Joe to post this. This is not your typical contract for a punter that nobody cares about. I’d argue that he was one of the top 5 players on this team, not just the most important on special teams. This guy is a stud and he is very important to our long term success. I’m very happy that this deal got done. Now, J Licht it’s time to spend some money on a solid WR2 in Free Agency so we can free up draft picks for both sides of the trenches.

Please no more soft serv..

Cmurda
Easily top five and without a doubt the most consistent and reliable player.
December 31st, 2016 at 12:43 pm
LOL, ok since everyone is repeating exactly what Joe said I will do the same. I read it was 5 years, 17M, $3.4M per year.

Joe
We don’t lose man cards or street cred for complimentary Posts about a kicker or do we. Maybe open up a 24 hour window where kickers are people too.
December 31st, 2016 at 12:48 pm
Thank you Cmurda. WR in free agency. We a vet on the Other side of ME going into His 4th season. A vet.
December 31st, 2016 at 12:49 pm
And while you’re at it Mr. Licht a vet RT in free agency.
December 31st, 2016 at 12:51 pm
Feel free to move up and reunite Mr Cook and Mr Jameis
December 31st, 2016 at 12:54 pm
Sign Stills as a solid #3 WR and deep threat, only 24 yes old; Throw $$ at Poe to create a scary D-line, and then start preparing for the draft.
December 31st, 2016 at 12:54 pm
Thank god!!! Bryan Anger was the bright spot on an otherwise below average special teams group. He is actually the best player at his position on the entire team.
December 31st, 2016 at 12:55 pm
No More Soft Serv?
WHat is this about? “No More Soft Serv”
December 31st, 2016 at 12:56 pm
Yeah NOSBOS, a RT pretty please unless a Center becomes available which I doubt. We need a center also but not as bad as we need a RT. The million dollar question is what is the deal with Sweezy. If he comes back, does marpet move to Center. I prefer not because Marpet has been solid at RG and I hate to fix what ain’t broke.

Can’t wait for Kobe to show up and call Licht an idiot for signing a Punter to a 5 year deal.
December 31st, 2016 at 1:04 pm
Great decision!
December 31st, 2016 at 1:05 pm
Always felt like this team lacked anger when they played… Nice to see that they are rewarding the attitude change…
Now to resign the kicker….
December 31st, 2016 at 1:05 pm
Good job Licht, now let’s get Glennon resigned.
December 31st, 2016 at 1:05 pm
Oh wait just read the article!!!!
December 31st, 2016 at 1:06 pm
If that is a serious question Rusty we have some dumb fans who think our best defensive player and annual sack leader needs to go. The fact that players and executives from accross the league think he is a top flight defensive tackle these expert fans constantly call him names and want him run out of town.
December 31st, 2016 at 1:15 pm
My son is quiting hockey. To focus on punting only. No way in the world a top punter should make over 2 million per season. I mean its punting a freakin football. Must be one of the best jobs in the world.
December 31st, 2016 at 1:23 pm
When will Roberto Aguayo get his New Deal?
December 31st, 2016 at 1:28 pm
Kevin Pamphile is a decent RT, actual he’s our best O-Lineman. He can play all 5 positions on the line, and play them well. That’s the guy who we should be extending now. We shouldn’t wait until next season, lock him up now.
December 31st, 2016 at 1:41 pm
Congrats to Anger – a big raise and long term contract is definitely deserved
Well done Jason Licht.
Anger was easily the most consistently good performer on the team in 2016
December 31st, 2016 at 1:55 pm
Lakeland Buc is correct about Pamphile ………………… D Cook is amazing but the amount of runs for a loss is scary ,RB s that float or dance to negative yardage are very hard on an offense. Compare Elliot to Martin in runs for a loss, yes I know there is an o line difference but there is also a player / running style difference.
December 31st, 2016 at 1:58 pm
And let this punter serve as a reminder that patience with Aguayo over the next 2-3 years is mandatory!
Jax drafted Anger in the 3rd round and then gave up on him. Now look at him. Playing at an ALL Pro level.
There’s a reason Anger was selected so high for a punter. Ditto for Aguayo.
Talent has a way of shining through when proper nurturing, development and opportunity is provided.

I’m about to watch and see if Alabama can keep up with John Ross and his ( reported) 4.25 speed
December 31st, 2016 at 2:35 pm
When you shell out tens of millions on players who end up injured or not performing (Vjax, Sweezy, Verner)
I have absolutely no problem even overpaying an outstanding performer like Anger. He deserves this and so do we.
December 31st, 2016 at 2:50 pm
One down, 26 pending free-agents left to look at.
December 31st, 2016 at 3:16 pm
Cincinnati picks #8. Send the greatest DT to ever lace up to them for their scrub 3tech, Tyler Boyd and their #8 pick. That solves all our problems. Then we can draft Dline and Oline the rest of the draft.
Welp so much for speedy Ross who just got caught from behind. Not even sure where some of youz learned football. Have we not learned to leave those huskies alone?
December 31st, 2016 at 3:44 pm
wow we sigh kickers to long term deals but cant bring a wr in before the trade deadline when we needed it the most .
December 31st, 2016 at 3:53 pm
Licht deserves credit for bringing him in. Could argue he was MVP of this team.
Someone reward Licht with a Weight Watchers membership!
December 31st, 2016 at 3:56 pm
yeah Litch lets get all our backups and kickers sighed Good job . maybe we can win the backup bowl
December 31st, 2016 at 4:11 pm
Props to Jason Licht. This was one of the few Free Agent signings that worked out big time.
December 31st, 2016 at 5:00 pm
Good precedent to set for future free agents, too. You come here and perform and you will be rewarded. Now, send Jameis “the recruiter” to Orlando to the Pro Bowl to go find us some big name signings.
December 31st, 2016 at 6:07 pm
Nice! Anger plays angry. Set at punter! Now to work on the rest.
December 31st, 2016 at 6:26 pm
I’ll pass on John Ross.
December 31st, 2016 at 9:07 pm
Congrats Anger…wow.
December 31st, 2016 at 10:46 pm
One less position to worry about, the guy has played well and earned a solid contract. Don’t worry guys we have plenty left to spend.
