The NFL Sacks Leader Among Defensive Tackles Is …

Crushing data for the haters

Assuming the Bucs don’t play in the Super Bowl, Gerald McCoy will enjoy his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl selection in January.

After yesterday’s manly 1 1/2-sack outing against mighty Russell Wilson, McCoy now has six sacks this season.

A look at defensive tackles across the NFL reveals only All-World Aaron Donald of the Rams has that many, along with young stud Leonard Williams, last year’s No. 3 overall draft pick in the Jets’ 3-4 defense.

Ndamukong Suh checks in with five sacks for the stunning 7-4 Miami Dolphins.

Yes, McCoy is tied for the NFL lead in sacks by a defensive tackle, yet far too many Bucs fans — Bucs fans — think the guy is a perennial disappointment.

Is McCoy a Hall of Famer? No. Will McCoy go down as one of the most ferocious players in NFL history? No. But year after year he performs. There is no crime or shame in that. It should be celebrated.

  1. ForgotAboutDre Says:

But he’s not a mean prostitute beating mauler like Sapp was! Real football players are supposed to stomp on players that are down, not help them back up!

That was sarcasm by the way. The easiest way to recognize that a Bucs fan has no idea what they’re talking about is when they rip on McCoy.

  2. Christina Says:

Absolutely!! He deserves a lot more praise than he gets around here.

  3. NewTampaChris Says:

I think the word “hater” gets thrown around too loosely. If I point out that McCoy had no tackles and no assists against the Bears, am I a hater?

McCoy is a good player. In Tampa, he suffers from not having the signature moments like Sapp had against Brett Favre. He’ll get more of his due when and if the Bucs become a consistent winner.

  4. Stranger Says:

The dude has consistently came up big down the stretch of big games. How many more does he need before you consider one of them to be a “signature play”.

  5. Dreambig Says:

Too funny NewTampaChris. So now that you pointed that out, how does that compare to him being tied for the league lead in sacks for his position? Oh, I know, garbage sacks? Nevermind, your right. He sucks. Maybe we can trade him for a 7th rounder.

  6. ndog Says:

This is exactly the kind of game/play some of us have been waiting for. A game where he actually makes a difference with constant pressure AND a big play when it matters. Like I said last week maybe this will be the week and it finally was. Now just like everyone else on this team, lets see you do it again as one week does not make a season. People are not haters just cause they know what the expectations should be and hold players accountable for them. for example I wanted Jameis here more than anyone but that might have been one of the dumbest throws I have ever seen in the NFL. See it is not called being a hater it is called telling the truth!

  7. Pit Says:

Pfft important plays down the stretch????

Where are they? We keep him to a higher standard. So he has to produce

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

If I point out that McCoy had no tackles and no assists against the Bears, am I a hater?

    ————

No, but it does make you ignorant to his job responsibilities. Look up any 4-3 3 technique and check the number of tackles they get. Look at Warren Sapp’s numbers if you want (and no, he’s not Warren Sapp). Also keep in mind that teams throw the ball much more now, so his tackle numbers will go down. We are consistently a really good team against the run. Do you think that’s a coincidence? Do you really believe that just because he doesn’t make the tackle, he’s not affecting the play? If so, I’ve got nothing more for you. Use a little common sense, and listen to the guys that get paid to play and watch football. Those guys know more than you (and me). I promise you that you aren’t an expert, and you don’t have some sort of special insight that the experts don’t have.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

Boy, if this type of performance is an indication of things to come, WATCH IT!

  10. R.O. Says:

I think Joe summed it up. He is good, not great, not elite, not a game changer. He is paid though to be the latter.

  11. Mort Says:

He doesn’t need stats to better. He is disruptive. His job is to allow his teammates to make plays. He is excellent at that and still puts up sack stats. He is GREAT.

  12. Bryan Says:

I have been a “hater” to be sure. Never cared about the stats one bit. My only measure for GMC was did he make plays when they needed him to and to me the answer was no, not nearly enough. I also questioned his leadership. Could he make those around him better. Again, I did not think he did enough. Yesterday he makes a big sack late in the game. Then Jameis says in the post game presser that it was GMC leading the family talk at least this week. Sure, you could wonder what impact Jameis has had on GMC leadership. But for this week, and there have been a few others this year and last, GMC has been making the plays when needed. I have been looking for an opportunity to stop “hating”. I think I will take this one.

  13. ATrain Says:

McCoy had a very good game…
He also had an excellent game in our first game against the deadbirds…

But what about the games he does show up in?
The line played awesome which is due in part to the play of McCoy

But when you are a LEADER and a mutli MILLION dollar play you are expected to play like this every game.

You can not say McCoy had played that well in every game.

Why do we bash Conte even when he has a pick 6 and no article on his haters.

Joe CALL it like it is… Im a McCoy Hater I guess because I call him out..

But I will give credit when it is due …HE played very well yesterday..

But we need that every GAME>

  14. shouldhavedraftedefiert Says:

eh it still means he’s average and those stats are very Santana Dotson ish, which is fine…. if you’re not a first round pick. GMC is very good but he’s not the second coming of Sapp. Expectation of Bucs fans are too high on the guy. Love that he’s on the Bucs and not somewhere else.

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“You can not say McCoy had played that well in every game.”

Yes I can. No player is excellent every game. Russell Wilson is one of the best players in the league at any position, and would you say he played great yesterday? He’s had a few games this year similar to yesterday. The other team gets paid to play too. You can neutralize one player if his teammates aren’t helping. I don’t care who the player is. All great players have other good players around them.

  16. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’ve yet to hear one person just come out and say “I was wrong about McCoy”. What a joke. As I said yesterday, that’s “Mrs. Hawaiian Buc territory.” You guys are not professionals, yet you think you know more than the pros. The arrogance amazes me.

  17. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

McCoy Balled yesterday. Props to you sir. Man it felt good leaving the stadium for a change.

  18. BucTrooper Says:

I have to admit, in the fourth quarter he came up big with that sack of Wilson on third down.

Unfortunately they let the Seahawks convert fourth and 17.

  19. BUC IT Says:

McCoy needs to stay on the field… thats been my problem with him and ESPN reported he left the stadium in a boot yesterday.

  20. Lord Corn Says:

McCoys contract is great compared to most elite DTs signing their 2nd deals. Less than Malik Jackson/ Suh / Cox…

    $13 mill per year vs $19 / $17 / $14 to comparable guys.

$13 a year is less than many WR/DE and other top positional pay. For a disruptive DT that draws double teams consistently and flirts with 10 sacks a year every year it’s easily a deal id make. We’ve wasted way more money I other busts every year. The hatred and expectations and logic ppl use are so dumb to me

I still want us to draft a freak disruptive DT if available next draft. Just look at how important our d line pressure was in the win

  21. DB55 Says:

    Hawaii

It amazing you can even talk with decoys pecker stuck squarely in your throat. the man deserves credit for 2 good plays, the pressure at wilsons feet which led to the Ryan Russell sack and his 4th qrt 3rd down sack on Wilson. ITS ABOUT GD TIME. JEEZ.

How he gets credit for Spawns first sack is beyond me, Wilson fell into decoy leg OH that’s a sack for decoy. GTFOH. Spawn deserved credit for 2 solo sacks yesterday.

Then he got hurt AGAIN and was CRYING in the locker room. CHILD PLEASE!!! I just can’t with this guy.

But NO article about LVDs fumble which sealed the game. I honestly believe decoy pays the TB media to be nice to him lord know he gets plenty of free millions to do so.

If you wanna see how decoy’s position should be played watch McDonald when he comes in for McCoy. He makes tackles and gets sacks what a FKN concept. Imagine that!!!!

  22. shouldhavedraftedefiert Says:

@Lord Corn just won this endless debate. Well done sir.

  23. DB55 Says:

Where are the articles on LVD and McDougle winning the game for us? Truth is we can win games with or without McCoy.

  24. canadianbucsfan Says:

    @Hawaiian
Once again well said. Your one of the few people that actually seems to know what their talking about.

  25. Joe Says:

Where are the articles on LVD and McDougle winning the game for us?

Helps to actually read the stories. 🙁

  26. DB55 Says:

    Says the Canadian.

  27. DB55 Says:

“I was wrong about LVD and McDougle”

Bradley McDougald: Save for his pass interference call, McDougald played his best game with the Bucs. The guy was a complete and total stud Sunday.

Alterraun Verner: His dad would be proud.

Lavonte David: Had seven tackles and the play of the game.

But they still deserve their own articles especially if this fugazi gets his own.

  28. Lord Cornelius Says:

I think it was Hargreaves that forced the key fumble. Team wins like this where you can find moments that everyone contributed are just awesome

  29. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DB55,

You’re so funny. You’re a pathetic excuse for a football fan. I’m going to enjoy this win. Nobody takes you serious. Hope it feels nice to be a big joke. Say whatever you want about me, I’m sitting back laughing at you.

  30. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“But NO article about LVDs fumble which sealed the game.”

    ———————

Maybe if you weren’t such an idiot, you would have seen the article entitled “Lavonte David Made a Play”. Here’s the link: https://www.joebucsfan.com/2016/11/lavonte-david-makes-play/#more-169440. But just like with McCoy, you won’t admit to being the idiot you are. But please continue posting. Each one makes you look more and more like a moron.

  31. gotbbucs Says:

They need to continue to move him around and find matchups where he can’t be double teamed constantly. As good as he can be sometimes, he’s not great against double teams.

I’ll say it again, he would be more effective slid out to a 5-tech when they run their over and under fronts in nickel situations.

  32. DB55 Says:

Alright Steve. Anyone that disagrees with you is an idiot a joke a moron. Keep sucking mccoys duck you’re doing a great job buddy.

  33. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Waaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

  34. McBuc Says:

I do not understand how anyone one that knows anything about football thinks McCoy is not a great player. I will not argue the point with them, but I am sure they never played on a line at any level.

  35. DB55 Says:

Let’s not forget there were 3 rookie first time starters on seattles oline. But that’s none of my business though.

  36. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m not saying anyone that disagrees with me is an idiot, I’m saying YOU are an idiot. Let’s be 100% clear. You were crying about a lack of a Lavonte article, then when it was pointed out to read the articles, you still got it wrong. Then when you are sent the link, you resort to your typical lame, 5th grade comments. Have a great day crybaby.

  37. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Let’s not forget there were 3 rookie first time starters on seattles oline. But that’s none of my business though.”

    ————–

LMAO. I can literally feel you squirming in your chair. This is almost as fun as watching the Bucs destroy the Hawks.

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

You just can’t handle it, DB. Therein lies the beauty of this never-ending diatribe.
It is a little weird that you “dislike” someone on OUR team though!
    Good TEAM win!

  39. Pickgrin Says:

DB55 – I’ll give you credit for at least showing up here today and being CONSISTENTLY ignorant regarding your non-stop McCoy bashing.

tmax is either smart enough or too much of a wussy to not show up and continue with this charade of an indefensible position.

So Congrats on having enough balls to continue showing your a$$ after the big win and a great game by the “ice cream man”. (or is that showing you’re an a$$… hmmm)

  40. Pickgrin Says:

    And 1 more question.

Does any one know who the leader in sacks among all NFL DT’s from 2012 to present is???

DB55 – would you care to research that?

  41. DB55 Says:

Let me guess? The crying a$$, I have a hang-nail so I’ll need 4 weeks to recover, 1 tackle having, getting credit for other people’s sacks, soft as tissue, protected by the media, getting pancaked every 3 plays, decoy?

    Am I right?

All jokes aside I would really like to sit with you guys and watch film Cuz you guys are either blind or delusional.

  42. Hawaiian Buc Says:

You took that long to respond, and that’s the best you could come up with? Weak sauce.

  43. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Watch film, lol. I’m dying here!!!! You really truly believe you know what you’re talking about don’t you? I really thought all this time you were just trolling, but I’m starting to think you actually believe what you are writing. Oh, this is even better than I thought!

  44. Another J Says:

IMO, The dude that went off yesterday was Ryan Russell, That dude was a beast yesterday!
    Great pick up by Licht!

  45. Another J Says:

It’s nice to see McCoy getting some help in the d-line, Imagine if they could all stay healthy next season.

  46. DB55 Says:

Seriously though we do Steve big dog and Hawaii say the EXACT same things? “It’s not McCoy job to get sacks or tackles just to be disruptive”, “you people don’t know what you’re looking at”, ” idiot, moron, stupid”.

HA then he’s doing a great job of disrupting our ability to win championships.

  47. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Waaaaaaahhhhh!!!! There’s a million people saying the same thing as me and Steve. Only a few idiots think otherwise. Why do you think he gets all those awards? Again, the arrogance to think you know more than the people that get paid to do it is laughable. You’re a nobody. Nobody cares about your opinion, because your opinion is so ridiculous it’s not debatable.

  48. BucinJAX Says:

Great reading today. I can just picture Joe writing an article about how great 93 is and as he hits the send key he says, “Let the battles begin.”

  49. DB55 Says:

Whatever you say Steve. Obtw we still have to play the saints twice. I understand you know everything except anything that has to do with the Bucs.

Awards? Dude you’re a clown. If you’re so good why aren’t you national? yea bc people with a clue (pretty much everyone outside ST Pete and Mulberry) would eat you alive.

  50. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Man, you just keep coming back for more. You are truly embarrassing yourself. What the hell does playing the Saints twice have to do with anything? I think you’re just becoming delusional at this point.

But with each post, you look dumber and dumber. And the funny thing is, I’m telling you this, and you just keep coming back for more.

  51. Lamarcus Says:

    I’m still low on McCoy
Maybe if Joe doesn’t shove this guy down our throats.. maybe he gets more love??? Mccoy still won’t be a buc too long
