Warhop Shares Stunning Ali Marpet Story

Obsessive dedication

It takes a lot to get Joe to do a double-take if beautiful women are not involved.

That happened when Joe listened to the Buccaneers Radio Network today.

Offensive line coach George Warhop was on and explained that second-year manbeast guard Ali Marpet is so dedicated he joins the Bucs rookies routinely for extra coaching.

Warhop offered a glowing scouting report on Marpet: “super smart, super tough, extremely competitive, great desire, wants to be the best, shows up every week.”

And then Warhop detailed Marpet’s extra classroom work.

“You know, we make our rookies meet early, with [assistant O-line coach] Butch Barry, and Ali still goes in there early in the morning, even with the rookies,” Warhop said. “Even though he knows the stuff, he just always wants more information. So he’s got all those things you look for in an offensive lineman. He’s going to have an outstanding career.”

Pretty damn stunning that Marpet attends rookie meetings to review the stuff he already knows in hopes up picking up fresh nuances and sharpening his mind. It’s one thing to show up early and review film yourself and maybe sit down with the offensive coordinator, but it’s darn rare for an established player to dive into rookie meetings.

Have you cast your Pro Bowl vote yet for Marpet? If yes, vote again.

I was worried about trading up in the 2nd round to get him, I thought it was a risky move however, I really like the pick. I hope I can say the same thing next year about our 2nd rounder this year.

Not only is it showing that he’s driven, but it’s also setting the precedent and establishing expectations of the rookies as they come in. It’s showing them the level of preparation that they need to put in to be at his level. I think that will have a big impact on the team as we continue to grow up. Good on ya, Ali!!

Would have loved to see Sapp and him go at it in practice.

Couldn’t have said it better Patrick! It’s how you change the culture in a locker room.

  5. Hawaiian Buc Says:

What a great pick by that GM that so many hate.

  6. BigPoppaBuc Says:

My favorite Buc…. By next season he will be recognized as the best guard in the NFL.

  7. Magic Marpet Says:

That’s my boy. Love this guy.

The same set of onions that led our GM to trade up in the 2nd round to grab a kid from Hobart is the same attitude that traded up in the 2nd round to grab a kicker.

Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. I still don’t hate the Aguayo pick, but I’m just saying that when you live by the sword you die by the sword

The only thing that sucks about this article is the perception that he’s the only one in there getting more work.

I’d love if the rest of the OL would do the same. When your whole job is football, it would be nice to see more players doing everything in their power to get better, as it appears Marpet is doing.

That’s not to say that they aren’t doing their best, but from the outside looking in, to the casual fan, it appears other players could do more.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Every team doesn’t get every pick right ALL the time.

Besides, as I’ve said before, Aguayo gets a pass this first year due to him being a rookie. Next year, though, the pitchforks are out. LOL.

    Ali’s a beast….and Pro Bowl bound!

as a guy coming from D-3, the 3 or so years of coaching he got are probably worlds behind what guard at some of the premier programs with pro style offenses get. As good as he’s been, he’s smart to realize that some of those nuggets in the rookie sessions are more likely to be new and useful to him than to your typical NFL big-college offensive lineman

  14. EA Says:

    Marpet to the pro bowl.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I wanted MArpet when no one here even knew who he was. So proud.

  16. StrangleHoldBucs Says:

i understand where youre coming from @creamsickleBananaHammock but hes still an idiot for making that pick just for the simple reason that we arent a kicker away from getting to a SuperBowl. We needed offensive line help and Ali showed he was as good as the top players from big schools at the senior bowl and it carried over into the combine. not to mention Agauyo wouldve been there for us in the 3rd

  17. feelthepewterpower Says:

Marpet will make the pro-bowl this year…you heard it first, Joe 🙂

  18. BUCS BRAZIL Says:

I hope Donovan “Sleep” do the same.
Marpet is my favorite player on this team.
